Robert L. Smick

Robert L. Smick, age 72, of Geneva, passed away Saturday, August 14, 1999 at the Community Health Care Center in Naperville.

He was born May 25, 1927, in Bardolph, the son of Lewis and Ruth (Mason) Smick.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Norma; two sons, James of Schaumburg and Steve of Geneva; two daughters, Peggy (David) Murphy of Wisconsin and Paula (Daniel) Humme of Maple Park; four grandchildren; one sister, Lois (Jack) Anderson of Florida.

Mr. Smick lived in and attended school in Avon.

He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.

A 1950 graduate of Monmouth College he was sales manager for 40 years for Phillips Electronics.

Private services and interment were held at Oak Hill cemetery in Geneva.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, 833 West Washington Blvd., Chicago, Illinois 60607.

David Wayne Baker

David Wayne Baker, age 84, of Manteno, Illinois, formerly of Abingdon, Illinois, passed away Saturday, July 31, 1999 at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee, Illinois.

Services were Wednesday, August 4, 1999 at Brown Funeral Home, Manteno with Rev. Sondra Newman officiating.

He was born April 24, 1915 in Abingdon, the son of Garland and Minnie Magdalene Baker, both deceased.

Surviving are his wife, Helen, whom he married December 3, 1938 in Jackson, Missouri; one daughter Sharon, and son-in-law, Dale Heideman of Grant Park; one sister Margaret Stephens, Peoria; one brother, Gilmer Baker of Galesburg; three grandchildren, Gailyn, Kewanee; Allison, Havre de Grace, MD and David of Grant Park.

He was preceded in death by a brother Gordon and an infant sister, Kathleen.

He was a graduate of Abingdon High School in 1933 and also a graduate of Walton Commerce School of Business, Chicago.

He worked for the State of Illinois for 28 1/2 years as an accountant at both Elgin and Manteno State Hospitals and managed the commissary at Kankakee State Hospital.

He was active member of the Manteno United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Manteno Rotary, the Kankakee Elks and the Kankakee Moose Lodge 802 holding many offices throughout the years.

Burial was in Elmwood cemetery, Manteno.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donors choice.

William R. Spencer

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 21, 1999 in Denver, Colorado for William R. 'Bill' Spencer.

He was born on March 16, 1921, in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He passed away August 15 at the age of 78.

He married Dorothy Caulkins Spencer.

Surviving are his wife, formerly of Abingdon, Illinois; three daughters, Jill Spencer Easley, Wendy Spencer and Lori Spencer Krieger, all of Denver; one son, Jock Spencer, Idaho Springs, Colorado and four grandchildren.

Maber O. Peterson

Funeral services for Maber O. Peterson, 90, Roseville, were held Monday, August 23, at 10:30 a.m. in Corman Memorial Home, Roseville. Rev. Alan Puccini officiated and interment was in Point Pleasant cemetery.

Mrs. Peterson passed away Thursday, August 19, 1999 at 3:10 p.m. in Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Memorials may be left to the Swan Creek United Methodist Church.

A daughter of Ben and Gertrude Fowler Hillyer, she was born August 17, 1910, in Avon. She married Glenn Peterson, August 22, 1934 in Macomb, who died August 7, 1999.

Her parents, three sisters, a brother, a son and a grandson also preceded her in death.

She leaves: three sons, Merlin Peterson, Phoenix, AZ, Gary Peterson, Kirkwood, and Keith Peterson, Roseville; a daughter, Shirley Gray of Roseville; two brothers, Delbert Hillyer of Bowen and Gale Hillyer, Shelbyville, TN; a sister, Gartha McDonald of Colchester; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Peterson spent most of her life in the Swan Creek and Youngstown area, where she and her husband farmed. She was a homemaker and a member of the Swan Creek Creek United Methodist Church.

Marjorie R. Akins

Marjorie R. Akins, age 63, of Macomb, formerly of Monmouth, passed away at 9:15 p.m. Monday, January 25, 1999 in McDonough District Hospital, Macomb.

She was born February 27, 1935, in Hancock County, the daughter of Jess and Treacy Lovell Hoover.

She married Arthur L. Akins on April 30, 1952, in Pocahontas, Arkansas. He died March 18, 1988.

Surviving are one son, Robert Akins, Monmouth; four daughters, Marilyn Flesner, Washington, Joy Upton, Avon, Barbara Watkins, Ursa, and Toni Martin, Monmouth; one stepson, Larry Akins, Augusta; four sisters, Sadie Olson and Betty Thompson, both of Macomb; Maude Lambert, Lakeland, Florida; and Jessie Sanders, Carbon Cliff; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.

She was reared and educated in Hancock County. She attended Carthage High School.

A certified nurse’s aid, she worked at Monmouth Nursing Home for 20 years. She moved to Macomb in 1989 and worked at Wesley Village until retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Monmouth Assembly of God Church.

Cremation was accorded. Graveside services was at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Monmouth cemetery with Rev. Jim Epperson officiating.

Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the McDonough District Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Mayme S. Combs Taylor

Mayme S. Combs Taylor, age 90, formerly of 55 Lincoln Road, Canton, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Friday, January 22, 1999, at Heartland Health Care Center in Canton, where she had been a resident since March 2, 1991.

Born April 12, 1908, in rural Table Grove to William Lewis and Maude Bishop Strode, she married Samuel Combs on December 24, 1931, in Fulton County. He died March 30, 1975. She married Chellis Taylor on February 14, 1978, in rural Canton. He died August 31, 1987.

One stepdaughter, Marian Lock, and three brothers also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two stepsons, Howard Taylor and Eugene Taylor, both of Canton; 11 step grandchildren; one niece; and several nephews.

She was a teacher in the Fairview and London Mills areas for many years.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Canton, the Organ Club, Fairview Women’s Club and Fairview Farmerettes.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. Dean Bucalos officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memory Gardens.

Memorials may be made to her church.

Dennis Crowl

Dennis R. Crowl, age 46, of rural Avon, passed away at 3:45 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 1999, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born May 29, 1952, in Avon to Donovan E. and Melba A. Yocum Crowl.

Surviving are his mother of Bushnell; two sons, Donovan of Woodstock, Ohio, and Joseph of Galesburg; one daughter, Denissa Crowl of Urbana, Ohio; one brother, Richard of Bogalusa, Louisiana; one sister, Cathy Crowl, of Prairie City; and seven grandchildren.

His father and one brother preceded him in death.

A 1970 graduate of Bushnell-Prairie City High School, he served in the Marine Corps for six-years.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Checkrow Community Church in rural Bushnell with Rev. Norman Waligoria officiating. Martin-Hollis Funeral Home in Bushnell was in charge of the arrangements.

Burial was in Prairie City cemetery.

Edward Grady

Edward E. Grady, age 72, of 357 Fair Acres Drive, Galesburg, passed away at 1:00 a.m. Monday, February 22, 1999, at St. Mary Medical Center.

Born June 18, 1926, in Galesburg to James L. and Mary Leona O’Connor Grady, he married Mary L. Carr on October 18, 1947, in Galesburg. She preceded him in death.

One brother and one sister also preceded him in death.

Surviving are three sons, Michael, Patrick and James, all of Galesburg; two daughters, Gloria Goss of Brookfield, Wis., and Kathy Bushman of Eagan, Minn.; one brother, John of Peoria; and four grandchildren.

He was a fireman for the city of Galesburg for several years. He owned Grady’s 2100 Club since 1965 and the Top Brass in Abingdon from 1979 to 1998,

A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2257.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Galesburg Restaurant Association and a former member of the Moose Lodge.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at his church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday At Watson Funeral Home, with recitation of the rosary at 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery, where military rites will be accorded.
