ALES, James O. "Dink" Jr.
COLFAX -- James O. "Dink" Ales Jr., 44, of Rainsville, Ala., formerly of Colfax, died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, 1995, at St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville, Ala. He was born June 25, 1951, in Pekin to James O. and Phyllis N. Hasty Ales Sr. Surviving are his mother of Colfax; one son, James O. III; one daughter, Josette Nadine Ales Koontz; four sisters, Phyllis Ann Hill of Manito, Barbara Cox of East Peoria, Judy Buck of Rainsville and Beth Marie Jones of Crossville, Ala.; three brothers, Tony William Ales of Ellsworth, Johnny Howard Ales of Bloomington and Thomas Jess Ales of Colfax; 26 stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren. His father and one brother preceded him in death. He was an Army veteran, serving as a private first class. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Manito. Memorial services will be at a later date at Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in Bellcourt, N.D. Arrangements are by Rainsville Funeral Home in Rainsville and local arrangements are by Duffy-Pils Memorial Home in Colfax. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Foundation or any charity.

MARTENS, Minnie G.

Miss Minnie G. Martens, 84, of Normal, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday 9-5-1972, at Brokaw Hospital where she had been a patient since July 21. She had been in failing health for several years. Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Stamper Funeral Home, with Rev. Joseph A. White officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery, near Anchor. Visitation will be from 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Miss Martens was born 1-29-1888 near Anchor, a daughter of Jacob and Cornelia Saathoff Martens. She attended Anchor schools and Brown's Business College in Bloomington. For many years she was a bookkeeper in Anchor. She moved to Normal in August of 1956. Surviving are two sisters, Miss Margaret Martens, Normal and Mrs. Lester Wolverson, Ionia, Mich.; and a brother, Dr. J. Louis Martens, Normal. A brother preceded her in death. Miss Martens was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Anchor and later the United Brethren Church in Anchor where she was a pianist for many years. After she moved to Normal, she became a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church, the Cross Bearers Class and the Esther Circle of WSCS. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Evangelical United Methodist Church.

McCLELLAN, Owen W.

Owen W. McClellan was born near Colfax on January 31, 1894. After graduating from the Colfax high school in 1912 he attended college at Iowa Falls for a year, then one year at Wesleyan going from there to Chicago where for the past three and one-half years he has been a student of the Medical School of Northwestern University. Last November because of ill-health, he was compelled to leave school in his senior year and for the past five months has been confined to his bed almost entirely. Last week he started for California where he hoped he might regain his health and while enroute, he passed away April 30, 1920 at the age of twenty-six years and three months. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon, literary fraternity; of Phi Beta Pi, medical fraternity of Ptolemy, Masonic fraternity and the T.N.E. fraternity, also he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. When fifteen years of age he united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Colfax and retained his membership there until his death. On July 24, 1918 he was united in marriage with Miriam S. Scott, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carlile Scott of this place. Besides his wife he leaves his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McClellan, two brothers Homer and Harvey, all of Colfax and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral services were held from the M.E. church this afternoon at one-thirty, Rev. J.W. Ferris assisted by Rev. Attree Smith and Rev. H.H.H. Jenner officiating.

McDANIEL, Mildred L. (Ely) (DeVore)

Mildred L. DeVore McDaniel, 77, of 2304 N. Sheridan Road died at 1:13 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 1992, at Saint Francis Medical Center. Born April 22, 1914, in Colfax to William and Lydia Fuessley Ely, she married Harry DeVore on Aug. 22, 1933, in Colfax. He died on Jan. 27, 1969. She later married Kenneth McDaniel on July 22, 1978, in Peoria. He died in 1982. She is survived by three sons, Daryl DeVore of Flossmoor, Dean DeVore of Germantown Hills and Duane DeVore of Melbourne, Australia; one stepdaughter, Jackie Holmes of Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild. She was employed for many years as a sales clerk at Kellstedt's. She was an active volunteer with Troop 140 Cub and Boy Scouts. She was a member of Forrest Hill United Methodist Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home, the Rev. David L. Hurley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wiley cemetery in Colfax. Memorials may be made to her church.

McDANIELS, Rowena M. (Phillips)

ELLSWORTH - The private funeral of Rowena M. McDaniels, 76, of 308 N. East St. who died Friday (Sep. 30, 1983) will be Monday afternoon at Carmody Funeral Home, Bloomington. The Rev. Clayton Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Park Hill cemetery, Bloomington. There will be no visitation. She was born Sep. 26, 1907, at Downs, a daughter of Elmer and Elsie (Hall) Phillips. She married Nathan G. Scheets Feb. 18, 1927, at Bloomington. He died in 1930. Surviving are a son, Harold E. Scheets, Ellsworth; a stepson, Robert McDaniels, Bloomington; two sisters, Georgia Roberts, Eaton, Ind and Evelyn Roberts, Bloomington; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Two brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. McDaniels was a licensed practical nurse, retiring in 1972 after 18 years employment at Brokaw Hospital, Normal.

McGOWAN, Margaret C.

PEORIA -- Margaret C. McGowan, 78, of 915 S. Helen died at 5:07 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 1996, at her home. She was born Oct. 15, 1917, in Colfax to James and Mary O'Rourke McGowan. Surviving are one brother, Monsignor Joseph M. McGowan of Bloomington; and several nieces and nephews. Five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. She worked at Saint Francis Medical Center as an elevator operator. She was a member of St. Francis Saints Retirees Club, Secular Franciscans and St. Ann Catholic Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at her church. The Rev. Joseph M. McGowan will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be one half-hour before services at the church. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's cemetery in Bloomington.

MEHLAN, Keith Edmund

Lorton, VA. - U.S. NAVY BAND CHIEF MUSICIAN MEHLAN DIES - Keith E. Mehlan, 33, of Lorton, Va., died at 1:37 p.m. Sunday 4-23-1995 at home. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Anchor. The Rev. Melvin C. Blobaum will officiate; burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Mehlan was born 9-16-1961 at Chicago, a son of Edmund and Anita Herdina Mehlan. He married Jane Adelle Andreae on 5-12-1984 at Funks Grove. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Christopher Mehlan and Benjamin Mehlan, both at home; his parents of Belleville; his paternal grandmother, Gertrude Mehlan of Atlanta, Ga; and a brother, Kevin Mehlan of Troy. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather and maternal grandparents.

MEINERS, Jessie Reinhart

Jessie Meiners, 94, a resident of Octavia Manor Nursing Home, Colfax, since August 1981 died at 4:35 a.m. 4-17-1988 at Gibson Community Hospital, Gibson City. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Anchor, Rev. Melvin Blobaum officiating; burial in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Donny, Ronnie, Robert and John Meiners, Matthew Sutter, Thomas and Phillip Orendorff. Soloist will be Beverly Scholer. Visitation was from 5 - 9 p.m. Wednesday at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Colfax, with a prayer service at 9 p.m. and from 10 - 11 a.m. at the church today. Mrs. Meiners was born 8-25-1893 in rural Colfax, a daughter of Peter and Jessie Schroeder Reinhart. She married Edward Meiners 10-4-1911 in rural Colfax. He died 8-6-1947. Survivors include three sons, Pete and Elmo, both of Anchor; and John, Green Valley, AZ; two daughters, Rose Orendorff, Colfax, and Norma Sutter, Cooksville; two sisters, Fan Wunsch, Peoria, and Anna Lanzer, El Paso; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters and one daughter in infancy. Mrs. Meiners was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Anchor and the church's Dorcas Society. Memorials may be made to her church, Octavia Manor Nursing Home, Colfax, or the Eastern McLean County Ambulance Association.

MEINERS, LaVerne McCown

The funeral of LaVerne Meiners, 82, a life-time Anchor resident, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Anchor. The Rev. Robert Ferro will officiate; burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 p.m. Friday at Metzler - Froelich Memorial Home, Bloomington, and for one hour before the service Saturday at the church. She died at 1 p.m. Tuesday 7-25-2000 at her home. Memorials may be made to her church. Mrs. Meiners was born 12-13-1917 in Anchor, the daughter of Walter and Myrtle Watkins McCown. She married Elmo R. Meiners 9-2-1936. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Donald R. (Priscilla) Meiners, Colfax; and Ronald E. (Betty) Meiners, Gibson City; one daughter, Vera Lynn (Dr. Henri) Cuddihy, Iowa City, Iowa; one brother, Ralph (Edith) McCown, Normal; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her parents preceded her in death. LaVerne was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Anchor, and a member of the Dorcas Society of the church. She had done various volunteer work throughout her life. She was a member of the Gibson City Hospital Auxiliary, Gibson City. She traveled extensively with her husband. She enjoyed her family and golfing. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

MEINERS, Mabel L. Burnett Thedens

Mabel L. Meiners, 96, of Galesburg, formerly of Normal and Saybrook, died at 4:50 a.m. Friday 1-15-1999 at Marigold Health Care Center, Galesburg. Her graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, cemetery, Anchor, the Rev. Robert Ferro officiating. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff - Pearson - West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Meiners was born 9-28-1902 in Saybrook, a daughter of Edward and Minnie Smith Burnett. She married Louis P. Thedens in 1929. He died in 1943. She married John C. Meiners in 1945. He died in 1984. Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn (Rodney) Horton, Galesburg; two sisters, Florence Fasking, Earlville, and Dorothy Jourdan, Elmhurst; two grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Two sisters preceded her in death.

MEINERS, Peter John "P.J."

The funeral of Peter John Meiners, 80, of Anchor, a farmer, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Anchor. The Rev. Melvin Blobaum will officiate; burial will be in the church cemetery, where mililtary rites will be accorded by the Colfax American Legion Davis-Kerber Post No 653. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Colfax, with a prayer service at 8, and an hour before the service Tuesday at the church. Mr. Meiners died at 4:06 p.m. Friday 7-17-1992 at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal. He was born 5-30-1912 at Anchor, a son of Edward and Jessie Reinhart Meiners. He married Ruth E. Harms 12-21-1941 at Anchor. She survives. Other survivors include four sons, Robert E. and John H., both of Anchor; Glen A., Tokyo, Japan; Richard N., Tucson AZ; a daughter, Phyllis J. Youngberg, Silver Spring, Md; two brothers, Elmo, Anchor; and John, Green Valley, AZ; two sisters, Rose Orendorff, Colfax; and Norma Sutter, Cooksville; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant sister. Mr. Meiners had been a Republican Precinct Committeeman for Anchor Twp for a number of years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, serving from 1941 - 45 in the 68th Medical Regiment in Europe. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Anchor; the Anchor American Legion Post No 164; and McLean County Farm Bureau. Memorials may be made to his church, Village of Anchor Park Fund or a charity of the donor's choice.
