BAYLOR, Clara B. (Phillips)

Pantagraph, Feb. 6, 1933, Bloomington, Illinois
DOWNS - Mrs. Clara B. Baylor died at her home three miles southwest of Downs at 1:25 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 5, 1933), following a two week illness. She was the daughter of Theophilus and Lavina (WIlcox) Phillips. She came west with her parents in the fall of 1864 and was married Nov. 19. 1865 to David F. Baylor and had resided on the home farm since that time. Mrs. Baylor is survived by the following children; Florence, Burl, Elliott and Una, all living in the vicinity of Downs, also one step-daughter, Mrs. John M. Armstrong of 101 W. Irving Avenue, Normal. Mr. Baylor died Jan. 26, 1883, one son and one stepson are also dead. The funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the late residence. Burial will be in Diamond Grove cemetery.

BAYLOR, Francis Burl

Pantagraph Jan. 23 or 24, 1938 Bloomington, Illinois
DOWNS - Francis Burl Baylor, township school treasurer for 25 years and former vice president of the Downs Bank, died at 11:30 p. m. Saturday (Jan. 22, 1938) at St. Joseph's Hospital. The body was removed to the J.H. Iden Funeral Home in LeRoy pending funeral arrangements. Mr. Baylor was a son of David F. and Clara B. (Phillips) Baylor. Surviving are two sisters and a brother; Miss Florence, Miss Ura and Elliott, all of Downs. Mr. Baylor lived all his life in Downs. He was a member of the Diamond Grove United Brethren Church.

Miss Margaret Florence Baylor of 506 North School Street, Normal, died Wednesday (Nov. 12, 1947) morning in Brokaw Hospital. She had been ill three weeks. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Stubblefield Memorial Home. Burial will be in Diamond Grove cemetery at Downs. Miss Baylor was born Feb. 12, 1887, near Downs, a daughter of David and Clara (Phillips) Baylor. She had lived in Normal a year. She is survived by a sister, Miss Ura Baylor, at home, several nieces and nephews. Her parents, four brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

BAYLOR, Ura

Pantagraph March 10, 1958 Bloomington, Illinois
Miss Ura Baylor, 82, of 506 N. School St., Normal died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday (March 9, 1958) at Brokaw Hospital. She had been ill two weeks. Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Stubblefield and Son Memorial Home, with the Rev. Gordon White officiating. Burial will be in Diamond Grove cemetery, Downs. She was born Oct. 8, 1875, at Downs, a daughter of Daniel and Clara (Phillips) Baylor. Surviving are 13 nieces and nephews. Six brothers and sisters preceded her in death. She was a member of the Diamond Grove United Brethren Church.

BECK, Laura Ortmann

The entire community was shocked by the sudden death of Mrs. William Beck at her home in the northwest part of town (Saybrook) Friday night(about 1925) after a sudden attack of uremic poisoning. The death is doubly sad as it leaves seven children motherless. Laura Ortmann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ortmann, was born 9-12-1889. She moved with her parents to a farm north of Anchor 20 years ago and here was united in marriage with William G. Beck on 2-17-1909. To this union were born seven children, two sons and five daughters, all at home, the youngest of whom is but a month old. Mr. Beck is manager of the Standard Oil Co of Saybrook. Besides her immediate family Mrs. Beck leaves two brothers, William, of South Bend, Ind., and Clarence, at home; and two sisters, Mrs. Carl Klein, of this city, and Anna, at home. She was a member of the German Lutheran Church. The funeral services were held at the United Brethren Church in this city Monday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. A. Hahn pastor of the German Lutheran Church, north of town being in charge, assisted by Rev. Baughman, pastor of the U.B. Church. The remains were laid to rest in the South cemetery.

BECK, Mary E. (Bennet) Roberts

(no date available) Mrs. Mary E. Beck died at 3:20 a.m. Friday at Mennonite Hospital, Bloomington. She had been in poor health several years. The funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred G. Foster, Easton, officiating. The Rev. George M. Wilson will assist. Burial will be in Cheney's Grove Twp cemetery. Mary Bennett, daughter of William and Jane Bennett, was born 7-2-1883, at Freetown, Ind. In 1902 she married Lewis Roberts of Freetown. The moved to Saybrook in 1909. Mr. Roberts died in 1928. She married William Beck in 1929. He died in 1939. Surviving are three sons, Leo Roberts, Gibson City; Lawrence, Saybrook; Lewis Williamson, in service; two daughters, Mrs. Avonelle Johnson, Saybrook; Mrs. Mildred Simmons, Gibson City; three brothers, John Bennett, Champaign; James Bennett, Farmer City; William Taylor, Saybrook; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Frymire, Galesburg; Mrs. Edith Gladd, West Palm Beach, Fla.; her stepfather, Hiram Taylor, Saybrook; 10 grandchildren; seven stepchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

BECK, Etta M. Tjarks

Etta M. Beck, 91, of Gibson City, died at 2:30 a.m. yesterday 6-27-1992 at Gibson Manor Nursing Home, Gibson City. Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the American Lutheran Church, Gibson City, the Rev. Dane Meuschke officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery, Anchor. Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. today at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, and an hour before services Monday at the church. She was born 2-22-1901, at Sibley, a daughter of Gerhardt and Maria Jensen Tjarks. She married Ferdinand "Fritz" Beck 12-10-1919 at Bloomington. He died 4-24-1935. Survivors include a son, Marvin Beck, Elliott; a daughter, Dorothy Goben, St. Joseph; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons, five brothers and three sisters. Mrs. Beck was a member of the American Lutheran Church and the oldest member of the Garber Friendship Club for 68 years. Memorials may be made to her church.

BECK, Peter G.

Peter G. Beck, born 11-20-1849, Weddingstedt, Heide, Germany; died 2-12-1925 at the age of 75 yrs, 2 mo., 22 days. He came to America in 1872, settling in the Anchor neighorhood. Married 11-14-1880 to Mary F. Timcke, who died 7-8-1922. Both are buried in St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery, Anchor Twp.

BECK, William G.

William G. Beck, 58, died at his home in Saybrook Friday night (8-11-1939) from heart ailment. He had been confined to his bed for two months. He was born 9-25-1881, at Anchor, a son of Peter G. & Wiebka M. Timcke Beck. He was married to Laura Ortmann 2-17-1909 who preceded him in death. July 22, 1930 he was married to Mrs. Mary Roberts. She survives with the following children and stepchildren: Lawrence, Evelyn, Willis Beck; Mrs. Irene Bowen of Saybrook; Esther of Pleasant Plains; Eleanor of Gibson City; and Mrs. Clara Harsha of Minn.; Mrs. Wilbur Johnson of Saybrook, Mrs. Shirley Simmons and Lawrence Roberts of Gibson City; also two brothers, Herman of Wisconsin, Henry of Anchor and one sister, Mrs. David Martin of Gibson City. The funeral services were held at the Saybrook United Brethren Church Monday afternoon at 2:30 , Rev. Fred G. Foster, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating, assisted by Rev. Willis A. Locke, of the United Brethren Church. The remains were laid to rest in Riverview cemetery.

BECK, William Wayne

The funeral of William Wayne Beck, 43, of Pocahontas, formerly of Saybrook, who died after a one-car accident Friday (March 1986) evening near Pocahontas, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Stensel-Calvert-Belangee Funeral Home, Saybrook, with the Rev. Tom Brown officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Saybrook. Visitation will be from 6 - 8 tonight at the funeral home. He was born 5-18-1942 at Arrowsmith, the son of Lawrence William and Frances E. Outlaw Beck. He married Nancy Irene Neumann 4-26-1970 at Mattoon. She survives. Also surviving are his mother, Saybrook, two sons, Lawrence William and Randall Wayne, at home; three daughters, Andrea Lee, at home; Theresa Lawson, LeRoy; and Tina Thompson, West Columbia, SC; a sister, Mary Ball, Saybrook; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter. He was a truck driver. Mr. Beck was a member of the Wesbein United Methodist Church, Saybrook and the Teamsters Local at Champaign.
