Howard A. Stotler, Jr., a former vice chairman of the Chicago Board of Trade and an influential figure in the commodities and futures markets for many years died at Lake Forest Hospital, in Lake Forest, Illinois on August 25 at the age of 94. He had been in declining health for some years. In the wake of the Hunt brothers attempts to corner the silver market in the early 80s, as chairman of the Futures Industry Association, Stotler played a key role in shaping the industry’s response to the crisis. In meetings with President Jimmy Carter and Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, Stotler helped shape new regulations for the industry. Tall, with silver hair and a booming bass voice, Stotler became a symbol of the industry’s solidity. Born in the small farm town of Winona, Illinois in 1914, Stotler attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana where he was the editor of the school’s year book, the Illio in 1937. Shortly after graduation he joined the army and, as a captain in the 90th infantry division, he landed at Utah Beach on D-Day, 1944. During the course of the war he was awarded a bronze star with oak leaf clusters and a purple heart. He retired from active service in 1946 at the rank of colonel. In the mid-sixties, Stotler joined his family’s commodities firm, Stotler & Company, and helped orchestrate its expansion into new financial products and markets. In 1976, in recogntion of the firm’s growth, Stotler was named vice chairman of the Chicago Board of Trade, then the world’s largest commodities market. By the mid-1980s Stotler & Co. had become one of a small group of firms that dominated the industry and Stotler had been promoted to chairman. He served in that capacity until his retirement a decade later. Stotler was a major donor to the University of Illinois, the YMCA, and various musical organizations, most particularly the Lyric Opera, sponsoring many productions and serving on the Lyric’s board for many years. As a one-time aspiring opera singer himself, his proudest achievements with the Lyric came when he sang in the chorus in performances of Die Meistersinger in 1976, Lohengrin in 1980, and Parsifal in 1986. A long time resident of Lake Forest, and frequent sight on the streets along the lake where he walked his beloved and totally fearless dog, Hermann, Stotler was a member of Onwentsia and Shore Acres. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church and stalwart member of its excellent chorus, to which he contributed a deep bass voice for many years. Stotler is survived by his three step-children, Susan Ipsen of Lake Forest, Christia Russell of Rye, England and Erik Ipsen of Pelham, New York.He is also survived by nieces Susan Bartosch of Creve Couer, Missouri, Edith Stotler of Champaign, Illinois, as well as by nephews Bruce Payne of Kankakee, Illinois and Robert Stotler of Chicago, Illinois.
