Agnes Gillenberg, of Lake Forest, IL, died Friday, July 16, 2010 at the Westmoreland Nursing Center in Lake Forest. She was born on April 3, 1922 in Ashland, WI. Survivors include a daughter, Maralee (Rick) Murphy of Estero, FL, a son, Jim (Sherry) Gillen of Lake Bluff, IL, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert, in 2008, her parents, John and Sophia Uitto, her sisters Alma Peltonen, Eleanor Uitto, Ella Mattson, Helen Meyers, Mayme Bissell, Olivia Poppe and Ruth Uitto, and her brothers Alvin, John and Matt. An eternally upbeat person, Agnes will be remembered by her family and friends for her good nature and happy manner. Visitation is from 3-6 PM on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 Vine Avenue in Lake Forest. Info: (847) 234-0022; www.wenbanfh.com. Respected patriarch, Ray James Schoonhoven, Esquire, formerly of Chicago, passed away at his home in Lake Forest, Illinois, after a long illness, on July 10th, 2010. “The Chief” was 89 years old. Ray was another of those members of the "Greatest Generation", who served in the Navy in World War II. Like so many others, he did his officer training at Navy Pier and his barracks during this training period was the former Abbott Hall. He went on to specialized training as a PT Boat commander at Whidbey Island Washington, and then was shipped out directly to the South Pacific where he commanded a PT Boat as part of General MacArthur's offensive to recapture the Philippines. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and continued to serve in the Navy Reserve on completion of his active duty when the war ended. He returned to Chicago where he enrolled in Northwestern Law School and after graduation joined the Chicago based law firm then called Seyfarth, Shaw, Fairweather and Geraldson. During his career he was widely regarded as one of the premier management labor lawyers in the country and at one point was on the "short list" for appointment as Secretary of Labor. His clients included such notable companies as Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock (the largest shipyard in the country where the Navy's nuclear carriers and submarines are built), the University of Notre Dame, Walker Manufacturing (a major supplier to the automotive industry), and Maremont Corporation. He was a dedicated mentor and teacher to several generations of lawyers who benefited from his depth of experience and knowledge of labor and employment law. Ray was the beloved husband of the late Marie Dunn Schoonhoven. Much loved Father of Marie Kathleen (Kamie) Schoonhoven (Ed) Kocher, Ray James Jr., Pamela (John), John P. (Biancha), Rose (David) Lloyd. Loving Grandfather of Shawn, Peter and Christopher Lloyd, Kristen, Faybienne, Biancha and Sarah. Loving Great Grandfather of Kathleen and Sophia. Barbara Buchanan Eldridge, 90, died peacefully at her Lake Forest home on July 7, 2010. She is survived by two sons; Huntington Eldridge Jr. of Milwaukee, and Peter B. Eldridge of Lake Forest; a daughter, Anne W. Eldridge of Duxbury, MA; and two grandchildren. Eldridge was born in January, 1920 in Lake Forest, IL. She graduated from the Masters School (Dobbs Ferry, NY) in 1938 and in 1948 she married Huntington Eldridge, who predeceased her in 1995. Eldridge was a long-time member of the Women’s Athletic Club of Chicago and Onwentsia Club of Lake Forest and she was involved in many local organizations and charities, especially those benefiting the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest and Lake Forest Hospital. She spent many winters in Captiva, FL where she loved shelling and walking the beach. Eldridge’s children remember her for her love of family and her devotion to the Lake Forest community. “She filled our house with laughter and song and regularly entertained us by singing the lyrics to ‘Oklahoma, ’ ‘Camelot, ’ and ‘South Pacific, ’ her daughter, Anne, remembers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, where a memorial service for Eldridge will be held on Wednesday, July 14th at 11:00 a.m. following a 10:00 a.m. private burial service for family members.

Michael John Palmer, age 57, of Lake Bluff, IL formerly of Milwaukee, WI passed away June 30, 2010 surrounded by his family. Michael is survived by the love of his life, Marti (nee Wood), his children Megan (John) Looby, Lindsay, John and Patrick and his brother Steven (Kathy). Michael’s passions were playing baseball as a teenager and playing golf into his early 50’s. He loved to learn and earned undergraduate degrees in Political Science, Accounting and Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Michael enjoyed his unique career, he was a co-founder of Diamond Technology Partners in 1994 where he was the co-Chairman of the North American Area Operations Committee and served on the firm’s Management Committee. Prior to joining Diamond, Michael was a vice president with James Martin Associates, a leading information engineering firm. Earlier, he served as a partner at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), where he had administrative responsibilities for that firm’s international banking practice for North America. His work efforts included working with many of the leading trading companies, commercial banks, and investment banks in the United States, Middle East and Latin America, where he helped organizations realize significant business benefits through the use of value-creating technologies. Respected and admired Abbott chemist, inventor and family patriarch Dr. Arthur Walter Weston, of Lake Forest Illinois, passed away after a short illness on June 26th in Lake Forest, with his wife and family at his side. He was 96 years old. Dr. Weston, a notable chemist, scientific and business executive, was born February 13, 1914 in Smiths Falls Ontario, Canada. Dr. Weston began his outstanding academic career as he progressed from the local collegiate institute to Queens’ University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada (B.A. and M.A.). He then and moved on to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where he obtained his PhD in organic chemistry in 1938. He was on the faculty at Northwestern until 1940 when he joined Abbott Laboratories as a senior research chemist. That year, he met and married a beautiful young undergraduate student, Dawn Thompson, who remained his loving companion and the love of his life for 70 years. They traveled extensively and had an exciting and spiritual life together. In 1952, Arthur became a US citizen. He is survived by his wife Dawn, their three children, Roger Lance (and Pam, Winnetka), Randall Kent (Lake Forest) and Cynthia Brooke (and Harvey, Montreal), their nine grandchildren (Page, Kent, Arthur, Noah, Rebecca, Alice, Elliot, Evan, and Spencer) and seven great grandchildren (Katie, Elias, Emery, Roger, Jackson, Piper and Henry) who were the joy of his life. Dr. Weston had an accomplished academic and scientific career marked by extensive achievements. He was the recipient of 16 scholastic awards including the University Fellowship at Northwestern, and member of honorary societies including Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Phi Lambda Upsilon. Over the years he was awarded 28 U.S. patents and 175 foreign patents for chemical compounds. He was inventor or co-inventor of 5 pharmaceuticals which were marketed worldwide. He also authored or co-authored 35 scientific publications. During WWII, as a member of the Manpower Commission and Committee of Medical Research, he contributed to the international effort on the development of penicillin and other important drugs. He served as an Abbott Vice President in various scientific capacities for 20 years and was a member of the Abbott Board of Directors. He traveled extensively worldwide in pursuit of new scientific developments. During this time he served as Vice President of the Board of Directors of San Abbott in Japan. After 39 years in research, development, and worldwide licensing, he retired from Abbott Laboratories in 1979 and was thereafter recognized as an Abbott icon. After retirement, he remained as a consultant at the head office in North Chicago Illinois for several years during which time he established Arthur W. Weston and Associates in Lake Forest Illinois. For these contributions, his biography appears in Who’s Who in the World and in the United States. Dr. Weston was active in industrial affairs: President of Research Directors of Chicago; Director and Trustee of the Chicago section of the American Chemical Society; Director of the Industrial Research Institute in Washington DC; Executive committee, Chemistry and Technology, National Research Council; Industrial panel National Science Foundation, Washington DC; Member of the Commission on Chemical agents, Dept of Defense, Washington, DC; In community affairs he was a member on school and hospital boards, including the Board of Directors of Lake Forest Hospital and Northwestern Alumni Council. For many years he and his family have been active members of the Grace United Methodist Church of Lake Bluff where Arthur served as a trustee. He was a generous contributor to many charities and recently created the Arthur and Dawn Weston Fellowship in University Teaching and Learning at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Arthur loved his family intensely and they adored him in return. He had a profound relationship with his children, grandchildren and extended family for whom he was a tireless mentor, confidant and friend. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday July 3 at Grace United Methodist Church, 224 East Center Avenue, Lake Bluff, Illinois.
