Alexander “Al” Glover, 1920-2010 Mr. Glover’s professional, political and patriotic interests covered a wide spectrum. His curriculum vitae ranged from bank vice president to alderman to Grand Marshal of the Lake Forest Day Parade. His 30-plus-year career at the First National Bank of Chicago began as an officer trainee straight out of service in the United States Navy during World War II and concluded as a vice president in the Real Estate Loan Department upon retirement from the bank in 1976. He then formed his own management consulting firm, Al Glover & Associates, working with smaller banks in the Chicago suburbs. Alongside his hours in banking, politics and public office, he maintained membership in American Legion Post 264. He held several positions, culminating in his election as Post Commander. He was awarded lifetime membership. Amidst his military assignments that focused on combating German submarines often by delivering depth charges from ships, Mr. Glover came home on leave and married Catherine “Kate” Hopkins on Aug. 4, 1945. While honeymooning in Milwaukee, the couple learned that the atomic bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The war was soon over and Mr. Glover was discharged. He said he was proud of all those who served in the military, and “I sincerely hope that my own personal effort measured up to my own personal goal: Do it to the best of your ability.” Upon returning to civilian life, he became interested in Lake Forest politics and the First Ward nominating committee became interested in him. He was elected to three two-year terms as alderman from 1969 to 1975. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor, but maintained a presence at board meetings as a political activist for what he called the “taxpayers’ viewpoint.” In honor of his service to the community, including nine years as chairman of Lake Forest Day, Mr. Glover was selected as Grand Marshall of the Lake Forest Day Parade in 2005. Mr. Glover was born Jan. 29, 1920 in Lake Forest to Alexander and Dolma Glover, he an Irish immigrant and she born in America to Norwegian immigrants. A graduate of Lake Forest High School, Mr. Glover began working at the First National Bank even as he studied at Northwestern University to take the Illinois state examination to become a certified public accountant. But he was drafted before he could take the test.
