Husband of Marguerite “Peggy”, father of Susan (Michael) Cortesi of Vernon Hills, Kevin (Barbara) Mullin of Edenton, NC and Mindy Cronkhite of Mundelein. Grandfather of Terry & Timothy Konz, Casey & Chris Cronkhite and Mellissa, Charlie, Kara & Joey Mullin. Great grandfather of 6. Lourae Hillyard

Lourae Lile Hillyard, 98, born December 30, 1913 in Greenville, KY died April 4, 2012 in Lake Forest, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Rupert O. Hillyard, her father and mother Arthur and Eliza Lile, her sister Kate Richmond and brother Trent Lile, her daughter Kathryn Reynolds and granddaughter Paula Hamlin. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth (Tom) Hamlin and son Rupert L. (Peggy) Hillyard. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1930; she lived in Wayne, Michigan for many years and retired to Arizona and then Cape Coral, Florida. She was a “Rosie the Riveter” in WWII starting at the Lockheed Plant in Los Angeles and then moving to the B-24 plant (Ford) in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She served on the planning commission in Wayne. She loved bridge, knitting, traveling and good food. The family will sorely miss her fried chicken and cornbread. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to First Congregational Community Church, 312 Santa Barbara Blvd., Cape Coral, Florida 33991. Services Private. Donald P. (Don) Welles, Jr., a longtime former resident of Rockford passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2012, three days before attaining his 85th birthday. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gerry Snow Welles, and is survived by his second wife, Anne Bolling Welles in addition to four daughters, Gerry Welles, Damaris Welles, Allison Meima and Margery Welles and seven grandchildren. Don attended St. Paul’s School and was in class of 1951 at Yale University. He was formerly associated with Besly-Welles Corporation in South Beloit, Illinois, and later founded Welles Products, Inc. In Roscoe, Illinois. After moving from Rockford to Lake Forest, Illinois, he founded HYCOR Corporation, located in Lake Bluff, Illinois. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 11:00a at The Church of The Holy Spirit, 400 East Westminster Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045. Diana S. Becker, 65, a lifetime resident of Lake Forest, died April 6, 2012. She was a retired Art Teacher and taught at the Woodlands School in Gages Lake for over 30 years. Diana was the daughter of the late Robert and Martha Becker of Lake Forest and sister of Nancy (Gordon) Pratt of Libertyville. Interment was private in Lake Forest cemetery. Verena Veile, 73, longtime resident of Lake Bluff, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2013. Born May 5, 1939 in Bichelsee, Switzerland, she immigrated to the United States in 1964, and settled in the Chicago area. After working as an au pair for the A.B. Dick family in Lake Forest, she married Walter Veile in 1971, and together owned Market Square Pastries until retiring in 1994. Verena, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, is survived by her husband Walter of Lake Bluff, children Markus (Janel) of Springfield, IL and Sonja (Jeremy) Dwyer of Seattle, WA and grandchildren Ella, Leah and Alexander. Verena enjoyed walking, gardening, reading, and traveling especially back to her beloved Switzerland to visit brothers Rudolph (Heidi), Karl, and sisters Martha, Margaret, Gertrude, Bertha, and Ursula and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 Vine Ave, Lake Forest on Friday, May 3 from 3:00 p.m. until time of service at 5:00 p.m. Interment will be private. Renowned climate scientist, Dr. Jerry D. Mahlman, previously a resident of Longmont, CO, and recently of Sunrise Assisted Living in Buffalo Grove, IL, died peacefully on November 28, 2012. Jerry was born on February 21, 1940 in Crawford, NE. He received his undergraduate degree from Chadron State College in 1962 and his Ph.D. in atmospheric science from Colorado State University in 1967. He was married in 1962 to Janet Hilgenberg of Hot Springs, SD. Dr. Mahlman spent most of his career modeling how Earth’s atmosphere responds to the steady buildup of greenhouse gases. From 1970 to 2000 he worked at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory of NOAA in Princeton, NJ, serving as Director from 1984-2000, and was a Professor in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at Princeton University. His expertise was understanding the behavior of the stratosphere and troposphere, and over many years he occupied a central role in interpreting the global warming problem to both policymakers and the public all over the world. Among his many awards he received the U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medal, the prestigious Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal from the American Meteorological Society and the Presidential Distinguished Rank Award– the highest honor awarded to a federal employee. After retiring from GFDL, he was a senior researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. Jerry is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet, his parents Earl and Ruth Mahlman and his brother Charles Ned (Lee) Mahlman. Surviving are his son Gary Mahlman of Longmont CO, his daughter Julie (Garrin) Kapecki and his grandsons Alex Kapecki and Collin Kapecki of Lincolnshire, IL, his brothers Kent (Jean) Mahlman of Wickenburg, AZ, Don (Connie) Mahlman of Fairbury, NE, and Rex (Marcia) Mahlman of Branson, MO. Jere Gottschalk, 85, of Lake Forest died October 17, 2009. Mr. Gottschalk earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard. He was a veteran of the United States Army during WWII in Europe where he earned the Silver and Bronze Star. He was later inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Gottschalk, Children Jeremy Corona, Susan (Ted) Moorman, Andrew (Marla) Gottschalk and Grandchildren Carolyn, Michael, Joy and Lily Corona, Christopher Klocke, Elizabeth Moorman, and Amanda and Laura Gottschalk.
