PEKIN ~ Jean Maree Crawford, 70, of 5569 Trail Side Drive, Port Orange, Florida, died at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, January 29, 2004 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. She was formerly of Pekin.
She was born July 28, 1933 in Elm Grove Township, Tazewell County to Arthur Conrad and Teressa Jane Young Fleming.
Surviving are one daughter, Janie S. (Michael) Wrhel of Pekin; three grandchildren, Brandy M. (Adam) Haynes, Jennifer M. Rettke, and Dustin M. R. Wrhel, all of Pekin; six great-grandchildren; and Lowell A. Puckett, with who she made her home with.
Her parents and twin sister (Jane E. Jamerson) preceded her in death.
Mrs. Crawford worked for Vogel’s on South 2nd Street in Pekin for 17 ½ years, retiring from the produce department. She later worked as the manager of the Clark Gas Station at South 4th and Derby Streets in Pekin for more than 10 years.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, where visitation will be one hour before services. Deacon Charles D. Murray will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

FLORENCE HINKLE
(1918~2004)
MANITO ~ Florence Agnes Hinkle, 85, of 13735 North Manito Road, Manito, died at 1:13 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.
Born March 30, 1918 in Pekin to Edward L. and Nancy G. Potter Bearden, she married George Alexander Hinkle on December 23, 1939 in Keokuk, Iowa. He died December 22, 1999 in Pekin. She was also preceded in death by one son (William E. Hinkle on July 16, 1983), one brother, and one sister.
Surviving are one son, George W. (Mary) Hinkle of Springfield; one daughter, Mary J. (Stanley) Nelson of Brimfield; one daughter-in-law, Jo L. Hinkle of Manito; five grandchildren, Beth M. (Ross) Roel of Canton, Michigan, William S. Hinkle of Clewiston, Florida, Joshua A. Hinkle of LaSalle, Edward A. Hinkle of North Freedom, Wisconsin, and Joel M. (Jessica) Hinkle of Springfield; three great-granddaughters; two brothers, William J. Bearden of Pekin and David (Lavonne) Bearden of Washington; and three sisters, Jennie Nau of Golden, Colorado, Flossie Sellers of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Elsie Miller of Pekin.
She was a 1936 graduate of Pekin Community High School.
A homemaker, Mrs. Hinkle was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Gary L. Ford will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

ERIC RICE
(1963~2004)
PEKIN ~ Eric Eugene Rice, 40, of 12802 Wiseman Road, died at 10:43 a.m. Monday, January 26, 2004 at the Pekin Hospital Emergency Room.
Born September 4, 1963 in Pekin to Robert Eugene and Celia May Williams Rice, he married Kimberly S. Towery on November 28, 1997 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother of Pekin; two sons, Seth Eugene Rice and Bret Daniel Rice, both of Pekin; one daughter, Tabitha Drowns of Pekin; one brother, Scott D. Rice of Pekin; two nieces, Stephanie Nicole (Brandon) Callaway of Pekin and Tabitha L. Rice of Marquette Heights and two nephews, Casey W. Rice of Marquette Heights and Michael of Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Mark Steven Rice on December 2, 1991 in Peoria.
Eric was a graduate of welding school and worked several years for Central Manufacturing in Groveland. He last worked as a custodian for Rankin School on Friday, January 16th.
He was a former arm wrestling champion at Super Sports in South Pekin. He loved to truck, write poetry, and collect Superman and The Incredible Hulk comic books. He also enjoyed cooking, fishing, mushroom
hunting and drawing and in fact was accepted to a drawing school in Arizona.
He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church of God, where services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2004. The Rev. Chuck Grogan and Rev. Charles L. Williams will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

GARY W. KERBY
(1962~2004)
PEKIN ~ Gary Wayne Kerby, 41, of 2213 Willow Street, Pekin, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday, January 26, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.
Born June 2, 1962 in Chicago, he was the son of Randy and Wanda Wells Patton.
Surviving are his parents of Chicago; one daughter, Becky (Fred) Lawcock of Pekin; one son, Randy Wayne Kerby of Pekin; three brothers, Johnny Kerby and Robert Kerby, both of Chicago, and Wilson Kerby of Knoxville, Tennessee; one sister, Gwendolyn Goodwin of Adamsville, Alabama; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Kerby last worked December 23, 2003 as manager of the Huck’s Convenience Store on Sheridan Road in Pekin, where he had worked since 1992.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #916 in Pekin and enjoyed traveling.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 29, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Rev. Richard Ray will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

ALFRED E. BRECHER
(1917~2004)
PEKIN ~ Alfred Edward Brecher, 86, of 1105 Arthur Street, Pekin, died at 8:00 a.m. Monday, January 26, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.
Born July 12, 1917 in Groveland to Walter W. and Annie L. Eitenmiller Brecher, he married Norma Louise Arnett on October 12, 1940 in Pekin.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Lee (Phyllis) Brecher of Laramie, Wyoming, Terry Brecher and James (Marilyn) Brecher, both of Pekin; one daughter, Kathy (Paul) Guidi of Pekin; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Milton Brecher and John (Wilma) Brecher, both of Pekin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one step-brother.
Mr. Brecher worked for Interstate Bakeries in Peoria for 29 years, retiring as a salesman in 1979. Previously, he worked for Lakeside Dairy in Pekin.
He was a member of Second Reformed Church in Pekin.
He was an avid bowler, softball player, and sports fan. He was an organizer of the Pekin Little League in the 1950’s.
Cremation will be accorded.
Private memorial services will be held at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. The Rev. Harmen Heeg and Rev. Ralph Cordes will officiate.
There will be no visitation.

CAROL MILLER

EAST PEORIA ~ Carol L. Miller, 69, of 701 Illinois Street in East Peoria, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.
Born November 10, 1934 in Bicknell, Indiana to Arnold H. and Vera J. Smith Webster, she married Woodrow “Woody” Miller on June 29, 1963 in Creve Coeur. He survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Loretta B. (Jerry) Maddox, Henrietta (Richard) Stanley, Penny K. Slusher and Tracy A. (Jimmy) Bannon, all of Creve Coeur; three sons, Robert M. “Bobby” (Rhonda) Beard of East Peoria, David L. (Patty) Miller of Pontiac and Kenneth W. Miller of Creve Coeur; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Larry (Judy) Webster of East Peoria and Terry (Kathy) Webster of Metamora and three sisters, Linda (Jerry) Harazmus of Pekin, Pamela Webster and Marilyn (Bobby) Brown, both of East Peoria.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Vickie Jean LaScelle on April 13, 2002 in Peoria and one brother.
Mrs. Miller managed area restaurants for many years, last working as the manager of Logan’s Café in Creve Coeur.
She was a former member of Creve Coeur Southern Baptist Church.
She enjoyed playing bunco, painting and making crafts.
Her visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur Chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation. There will be no service.

ANNA TUTTLE

PEKIN ~ Anna Lee Tuttle, 85, of 1102 Mechanic Street, Pekin, died at 11:44 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.
Born June 15, 1918 in Harrison County, Indiana to George and Rose Cunningham Bandy, she married George E. Tuttle on June 15, 1935 in Big Springs, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her husband on August 13, 1993 in Morton; and one brother.
Surviving are three sons, Dr. George E. (Joann) Tuttle of Bloomington, Vernon R. (Elise) Tuttle of Germantown, Tennessee; and Steven R. Tuttle of Pekin; one daughter, Carole (Joe) Bussone of Pekin; nine grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Tuttle had worked as a table lady in the bottling department at American Distilling Company in Pekin for many years until retiring in 1980.
She was of the Christian faith and enjoyed gardening.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2004 at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. The Rev. John Bussone will officiate. There will be no visitation.

MARY ELLEN WALLACE
(1928~2004)
PEKIN ~ Mary Ellen Wallace, 75, of 2109 Sunset Drive, Pekin, died at 4:50 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton.
She was born November 9, 1928 in Herman, Missouri to Fred A. and Helen D. Vogle Wallace.
Surviving are one niece, Susan K. Bain of Walnut, California; one nephew, James W. (Teresa) Waltrip of Diamond Bar, California; one grandnephew, John W. Bain of Walnut, California; and one grandniece, Jennifer K. Bain of Walnut, California.
Her parents, two sisters (Eleanor Sharpe and Joan Waltrip), and her housemate (Shirley C. Dunkelberg) preceded her in death.
Miss Wallace worked as a microbiologist for Standard Brands in Pekin for many years until its closing and later for Pabst Brewery in Peoria Heights. She then worked for Nestlé’s (Libby’s) in Morton for many years as a plant microbiologist in the confections and snacks division and also worked as an Environmental Health Practitioner for the Tazewell County Health Department from May 5, 1995 to last working December 4, 2003 .
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pekin, where she had taught Sunday school. She also was a member of the Pekin Union Mission, where she had played string bass in the orchestra, had been a Sunday school teacher, and sponsor of the Carrie M. Club.
She enjoyed animals, especially her cats.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004 at St. Paul ’s Episcopal Church in Pekin. The Rev. William C. Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

LOWELL GRIGG
(1929~2004)
Pekin ~ Lowell V. Grigg, 74, of 1405 Earl Street, Pekin, died at 12:54 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at Pekin Manor.
Born October 21, 1929 in Fillmore to Ira Newton and Lyda Smith Grigg, he married Anna B. Southern on July 12, 1952 in Rantoul. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Carol Alesandrini of Pekin; one son, Steven (Diane) Grigg of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; seven grandchildren, Timothy Steven Grigg, Shawn Christopher Grigg, Joshua Newton Grigg, Angela Marie Grigg, all of Baton Rouge, Anne Elise Alesandrini of Arlington, Virginia, Eugene Serafino Alesandrini, II of Cleveland, Ohio and Dominic Michael Alesandrini of Peoria and two sisters, Nelda (Carl) Bevill of Washburn and Carolyn (Hal) Lovelace of Hillsboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and two sisters.
He was an Air Force veteran of the
Korean War.
A graduate of Fillmore High School, Mr. Grigg received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts with a minor in Physics in 1951 from Eastern Illinois University at Charleston. In 1958, he earned his Master’s degree in Education from Bradley University in Peoria.
Mr. Grigg was an industrial arts and vocational education teacher at Pekin Community High School from 1955 to 1984, where he was also an advisor to the Hunting and Fishing Club and was the public address announcer for the home football games.
An avid outdoorsman, he was a charter member of the Pekin Chapter of Ducks Unlimited and was selected as their Man of the Year in 1998. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce.
He was a member of Empire Lodge No. 126, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons in Pekin; Mohammed Temple, Shrine and the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria.
Graveside Christian services will be accorded along with Masonic rites at Bethany Cemetery in Assumption at a later date. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

ROBERT MCCAFFERTY
(1931~2004)
Pekin ~ Robert Lee McCafferty, 72, of Jensen Beach, Florida and Bella Vista, Arkansas, died suddenly while visiting with his son at 2:54 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 618 Country Club Lane in Pekin. He was formerly a resident of Morton.
Born July 29, 1931 in Fulton, Missouri to Eugene and Ida Bolton McCafferty, he married Irene Zeoli on November 26, 1955 in Los Angeles, California.
Surviving are his wife of Jensen Beach, Florida; two sons, Patrick R. (Patty) McCafferty of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Michael V. (Deanna) McCafferty of Pekin and two grandsons, Shane R. McCafferty and Mitchell R. McCafferty, both of Pekin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
He served with the Air Force during the
Korean War.
Mr. McCafferty retired from Chicago Blower Corporation in 1990. Mr. McCafferty was also a former president of the Meyer Morton Company during the mid to late seventies.
He was a former member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Stuart, Florida.
He enjoyed golfing 
and snow skiing.
His memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. There will be no visitation. Cremation will be accorded.
