Mae Horning

SYRACUSE - Funeral for Mae Horning, 81, will be 10 a.m. MST Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bob Goebel officiating. A graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.

Mrs. Horning died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born May 1, 1919, at Friend, the daughter of Wesley and Ethel (McKee) Baldwin. She graduated from Syracuse High School and attended Brown Mackey College in Salina.

A resident of Hamilton County for more than 75 years, she had also lived in Finney and Scott counties. She was a homemaker and had worked at Donohue Memorial Hospital, Millsap Grocery and Northrup Theater. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading, family activities and spending time with her grandchildren.

On June 21, 1943, she married Victor A. Horning at Alexandria, La. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Michael Horning and Kevin Horning, both of Syracuse; a brother, Lester Baldwin, Berryville, Ark.; two grandsons; and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Orville Baldwin; and three sisters, Mildred Graves, Lola Finkenbinder and Arlene Hinkle.

Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to Hamilton County Hospital, in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.

Jo Leon

Jo Leon, 66, of Lawrence, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born at Garden City on Dec. 18, 1934, she was the daughter of George A. and Jessie (Gilliland) Berends.

She earned a bachelor's degree in education with a major in art from Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) in 1956, and did graduate work in art at Wichita State University, Southwestern College at Winfield, Fort Hays State University and the University of Kansas.

Mrs. Leon taught art at Arkansas City Junior High School. She moved to Eudora in 1970, where she was a substitute teacher, and moved to Lawrence in 1976, where she worked in the Central Junior High School library.

While living in Eudora and Lawrence, she worked with 4-H'ers, primarily in arts and crafts, served as Douglas County Superintendent of Arts and Crafts for several years, and was instrumental in developing a creative arts and crafts program. She was a member of Lone Star Church of the Brethren.

On Dec. 27, 1956, she married Clinton J. Leon at Friend. He survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Sienna Lynn Leon, Siena, Italy; two sons, Sven Aaron Leon, Portland, Ore. and Lars Eric Leon, Lawrence; a brother, Robert D. Berends, Salem, Ore.; and two granddaughters.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Gate (Okla.) Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the Huntington's Disease Society of America, Haskell Athletics H-Club, Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Trinity Respite Care or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 1260, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Michael "Tattoo" Metzen

Michael "Tattoo" Metzen, 48, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at his home in Garden City.

Born Oct. 19, 1952, at Wellington, he was the son of Norbert Henry and Connie (DuVall) Metzen.

He attended grade school at Mayfield and high school at Wellington before moving with his family to Garden City, where he has lived with the exception of six years in Baton Rouge, La.

Mr. Metzen was a self-employed tattoo artist and belonged to the Western Kansas Blues Society. His special interests were antiques and blues music. He especially enjoyed drawing and art work, having created the mural at the VFW in Garden City which depicts the various wars.

He is survived by his mother, Connie DeWeese, a sister, Colleen Cook, and two nephews, all of Garden City. He was preceded in death by his father.

An outdoor memorial service is planned for later in the spring. Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Michael Metzen Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Julia C. Maldonado

ULYSSES - Julia C. Maldonado, 95, formerly of Roswell, N.M., died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at her home in Las Cruces, N.M.

She was born Sept. 13, 1905, at Uvalde, Texas, the daughter of Mauro and Guadalupe (Velasquez) Cortez. A homemaker, she was a member of the Loma Heights Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include a son, Sam Maldonado, Stafford; seven daughters, Sarah McCauley, Las Cruces, Alice McCauley and Minnie Hagerman, both of Ulysses, Irene Martinez, Fresno, Calif., Elizabeth Smith, Fort Worth, Texas, Yolanda Ochoa, Granbury, Texas, and Christina Kellog, Grand Ronde, Ore.; three brothers, Manuel Cortez, Fred Cortez and John Cortez; a sister, Cecilia Castro; 36 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Ulysses Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 929 N. Joyce St. Inurnment of cremains will take place later in Kansas.

Baca's Funeral Home and Baca's Mimbres Crematory, Las Cruces, was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Lou Kells

Funeral for Betty Lou Kells, 72, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Church of the Nazarene, Garden City, with the Rev. Craig Coulter officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Mrs. Kells died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Nov. 5, 1928, at Ava, Mo., the daughter of Sam and Dorothy (Nelson) Davis. She grew up and attended schools in Ava. Shortly after graduating from Ava High School, she moved to Garden City and attended Garden City Community College. During World War II, she worked as a telephone operator.

On March 14, 1948, she married Clifford D. Kells at Garden City. They owned and operated a porcelain business and a moving business. She also worked for Lee Richardson Zoo and raised several zoo animals, and also managed the Big Pool here for two years.

Mrs. Kells attended Church of the Nazarene where she was involved in various church activities, and had taught children's church at Cornerstone Church for many years. She enjoyed children, crafts, crocheting, knitting and writing poems.

Her husband died Nov. 17, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her father; and a brother, Gary Davis.

Survivors include a son, Larry D. Kells, Liberal; two daughters, Cheryl Wears and Vickie Heeke, both of Garden City; her mother, Garden City; a brother, Jerry Davis, Timmonsville, S.C.; a sister, Laura Krantz, Brighton, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Betty Lou Kells Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Mildred Hoge

CIMARRON - Former Cimarron resident Mildred Hoge, 78, of Diamond City, Ark., died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison, Ark.

She was born Feb. 16, 1922, on a farm north of Cimarron, the daughter of Louis Eugene and Emma J. (Rose) Hilker. She graduated from Cimarron High School in 1940.

Mrs. Hoge was a World War II veteran serving as a sergeant with the U.S. Marines in San Diego. Her responsibilities were to decode military messages transmitted to and from the Pacific during the war.

In Arkansas, she had worked as a volunteer dispatcher and in the Thrift Shop for the Diamond City/Lead Hill Rescue Squad. Before her retirement, she owned Luther Abstract Co. in Dodge City.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews including David Hilker and Steve Hilker of Cimarron, Karen Hilker Jaffe of Short Hills, N.J., and Anita Cornett, Diamond City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb Hoge; and two brothers, Gene Hilker and John Hilker of Cimarron.

A memorial service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist Church, Cimarron.

Memorials are suggested to the Stained Glass Window Fund at the church, P.O. Box 189, Cimarron, KS 67835.

Holt Memorial Chapel, Harrison, was in charge of arrangements.
