Janet Ann Proffitt Cahill 1940-2000
CLIMAX SPRINGS, Mo. - Janet Ann Proffitt Cahill, 60, died Oct. 10 at St.
Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Mo. She was born March 12, 1940, in
Lyons, the daughter of Lawrence and Marjorie Curry Proffitt. She married
Patrick Cahill Aug. 10, 1974, in Merriam. A resident of Climax Springs, she
was a retired secretary for Ashland Chemical and Marion Labs.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Greg Link and Robert
Link; two stepsons, Steve Cahill and Michael Cahill; one stepdaughter,
Diana McAnally; one brother, D. Robert Proffitt; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Proffitt.
Funeral will be 7 p.m. Friday at Amos Family Chapel in Shawnee. Burial will
be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hilltop cemetery in Raymond. Memorials are
suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.

Zelma Kipp Russell 1907-2000
ST. JOHN - Zelma Kipp Russell, 93, died Oct. 10 at Leisure Homestead in St.
John. She was born Aug. 12, 1907, in Pratt County, the daughter of Roy J.
and Nellie Kipp. She was a 1930 graduate of Southwestern College at
Winfield. She married Elmer Russell Oct. 27, 1929, at Rose Valley Township
in rural Stafford County. He died May 8, 1983. A lifetime resident of
Stafford County, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Russell was a member of Antrim United Methodist Church, United
Methodist Women, Antrim Homemakers Extension Homemakers Unit and Antrim
Civic and Study Club, all of Antrim.
Survivors include two sons, Richard K. Russell of Mankato and Roger H.
Russell of St. John; one sister, Royena Shrack of Pratt; seven
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
two sisters, infant Vera Alice Kipp and Phyllis Shrack.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. W. Harlan
Rittgers officiating. Burial will be at Rose Valley cemetery in rural
Stafford County. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today at Minnis Chapel in
St. John. Memorials are suggested to the church or Hall Museum, both in
care of the chapel.

Mary M. Mater 1907-2000
Mary M. Mater, 93, died Oct. 10 at Integrated Health Services of Great
Bend. She was born Aug. 2, 1907, in Olmitz, the daughter of Maximillian Sr.
and Anna Kysley Mater. A resident of Great Bend since 1970, coming from
Olmitz and Hoisington, she was a clerk for C.O. Mammel's Grocery Store and
Dahinten & Behr Supermarket, all of Hoisington, and a waitress at Ralph
Wallace Restaurant of Great Bend.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, and
Daughters of Isabella, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include three sisters, Agnes C. Mater of Great Bend, Sister
Angela Mater, ASC of Wichita, and Sister Tereseita Mater CGS of St. Paul,
Minn. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Alfons Mater, Frank
Mater, James Mater, Leo Mater and Max Mater Jr.; and three sisters, Anna
Mater, Sister Maxine Mater ASC and Lily Behr.
Altar Society rosary will be at 4 p.m. Friday, with a vigil at 7 p.m.
Friday followed by D of I rosary at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great
Bend. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev.
Gerald Hammeke officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann's cemetery in Olmitz.
Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at
the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick School Endowment
Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Raymond L. Strait 1926-2000
KINSLEY - Raymond L. Strait, 74, died Oct. 11 at his home in Kinsley. He
was born July 24, 1926, in Greensburg, the son of C.C. and Mabel Maloney
Strait. He married Darlene Proffitt May 31, 1948, in St. John. A longtime
resident of Kinsley, he was a retired mechanic.
Strait was a member of the Christian Church of Great Bend and the American
Legion.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Dennis E. Strait of Kinsley; two
daughters, Patricia Brabander and Kathy Elliott, both of Great Bend; one
brother, Ralph Strait of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hillside cemetery in Kinsley
with the Rev. Sara Davis Blodgett officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m. Friday at McKillip Memorial Funeral Home in Kinsley. Memorials
are suggested to Southwind Hospice or to Kansas State University Basic
Cancer Research, both in care of the funeral home.

Alvina E. Miller 1915-2000
RUSSELL - Alvina E. Miller, 84, died Oct. 10 at Russell Regional Hospital
in Russell. She was born Dec. 6, 1915, in Barton County near Milberger, the
daughter of Emmanuel and Elizabeth Popp Nuss. She married Godfred Miller
Feb. 25, 1936, near Dubuque. He died July 20, 1986. A resident of Russell
since 1979, coming from the Paradise and Waldo area and Barton County, she
farmed with her husband and operated a cafe in Paradise.
Mrs. Miller was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign
Wars and the American Legion auxiliaries, all of Russell.
Survivors include four sons, Roger Miller and Fred Miller, both of Salina,
Myron Miller of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gary Miller of Montgomery,
Ala.; three daughters, DiAnn Becker of Sylvan Grove, Sharon Miller and
Marilynn Dinkel, both of Russell; one brother, Wayne Nuss of Russell; two
sisters, Florence Mai of Great Bend and Corraine Dutchman of Hutchinson; 22
grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by a sister, Viola Podszus.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Henry
Hartman officiating. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran cemetery in
Russell. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Pohlman's
Mortuary in Russell and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the
church. Memorials are suggested to the church or donor's choice, both in
care of the funeral home.

Joan Schnitzler 1929-2000
DODGE CITY - Joan Schnitzler, 71, died Oct. 10 at Good Samaritan Center in
Dodge City. She was born Aug. 5, 1929, in Otis, the daughter of Edward and
Ida Hergert Brack. She was a graduate Otis Rural High School and later
attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson. She married Everett E.
Schnitzler May 29, 1952, in McPherson. A resident of Dodge City since 1963,
she was a homemaker
Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Linda Hungerford
of Highland Ranch, Colo., and Peggy Ratts of Great Bend; one brother,
Norman Brack of Spearman, Texas; five grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by four brothers.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City
with the Rev. Kirk Larson officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove
Cemetery in Dodge City. Friends may call until 8 tonight, and from 9-10:30
a.m. Thursday, both at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice
of the Prairie or Good Samaritan Center Van Fund, both in care of the
funeral home.

Earl P. Krankenberg 1914-2000
ELLINWOOD - Earl P. Krankenberg, 85, died Oct. 9 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 26, 1914, in
Hudson, the son of Phillip and Emma McCrary Krankenberg. He was a graduate
of Hudson High School and Salt City Business College in Hutchinson. He
married Mary Louise Culipher Kinney June 21, 1945, in Virgina. She died
April 6, 1974. A longtime resident of Ellinwood, coming from Hudson and
Hawaii, he was a retired office manager of Mack Truck in Honolulu and a
former office manager for Feaster Truck Line in Claflin.
Krankenberg was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and the church
men's club of Ellinwood, Ellinwood Masonic Lodge 217, York Rights, Eastern
Star, Isis Shrine, Sunflower Shrine, Red Cross of Constantine and other
Masonic bodies. He was past master, grand lecturer and held several grand
offices in his Masonic work. He was also a member of American Legion,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Rotary Club and Lions Club. He was a U.S. Navy
veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Sara "Sally" Shipman of Hope Mills, N.C.,
and Linda Sisler of Semmes, Ala.; two foster children, Manferd Henrici of
Hutchinson and Rosemarie H. Rein of Larned; one brother, Herb Hickman of
Woodward, Okla.; two sisters, Elizabeth Bradley of Blue Eye, Mo., and
Blanche Pennington of Lancaster, Calif.; six grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Larry Young
officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in
Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon
Friday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood.
Memorials are suggested to Ellinwood Masonic Lodge 217, in care of the
funeral home.

Clara L. Lake 1911-2000
Clara L. Lake, 89, died Oct. 10 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great
Bend. She was born Oct. 7, 1911, in Meade, the daughter of David and Anna
Dettinger Williams. She married Howard Lake Dec. 24, 1934, in St. John. He
died July 8, 1967. A resident of Great Bend since 1943, coming from
Wichita, she was a secretary for Western Power.
Mrs. Lake was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Rebecca Lodge, Golden
Sheaf 226 Order of the Eastern Star, Business and Professional Women and
other civic organizations, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, David Lake of Topeka; one daughter, Charlotte
Kinzel of Great Bend; one brother, Edward W. Williams of Canon City, Colo.;
six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by two sisters, Anna R. Tegner and Arvella Williams.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bryant-Christians Chapel of Great Bend
with the Rev. Tom Robson officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend
Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m.
to service time Friday, all at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Golden Sheaf 226 Order of the Eastern Star,
in care of the funeral home.
