Bertine E. Schmidt 1913-2000
LYONS - Bertine E. Schmidt, 87, died Nov. 13 at Olathe Medical Center in
Olathe. She was born Feb. 25, 1913, in Pawnee Rock, the daughter of Jacob
and Elizabeth Schultz Dirks. She graduated from Pawnee Rock High School.
She married Garfield Schmidt June 10, 1931, in Pawnee Rock. He died June
29, 1987. A Lyons resident since 1988, coming from Little River and
Larned, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Schmidt was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ in
Little River.
Survivors include three sons, Garfield C. Schmidt of Seattle, Wash., John
L. Schmidt of Overland Park and Joel E. Schmidt of Little River; eight
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pawnee Rock cemetery with
the Rev. Will Best officiating. Burial will be at Pawnee Rock Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Center in Lyons, in care of
Sillin Funeral Home.

Maggie Broadfoot 1918-2000
Maggie Broadfoot, 82, died Nov. 13 at Integrated Health Services in Great
Bend. She was born March 22, 1918, near Forgan, the daughter of Ruffas Shaw
and Maggie Meldora Hutson Durham. She married Roy Ellsworth Broadfoot March
19, 1935, in Liberal. He died in 1998. A resident of Great Bend, coming
from Fargo, Okla., she was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, Karl Broadfoot of Liberal, Danny Broadfoot of
Garden City, Ronnie Broadfoot of Belleville, Ill., and Troy Broadfoot of
Tulsa, Okla.; two daughters, Sandy Dayton of Great Bend and Nancy Elliott
of Stillwater, Okla.; 24 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by two brothers, John David Durham and George Washington
Durham; three sisters, Lily May Walton, Jewel Gretchen Wooldridge and Elsie
Jane Hendershot; and three children, Margaret Ann, Maybelle Sue and Benny
Max.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Fargo cemetery in
Fargo, with the Rev. Olin Payton officiating. A guest book can be signed at
Legacy.com. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care
of Good Samaritan Funeral Service in Woodward, Okla.

Helen Smith 1916-2000
PRAGUE, Okla. - Helen Smith, 84, died Nov. 6 in Oklahoma City. She was born
April 30, 1916, daughter of Abe and Martha Harris Coleman. She married
Charles E. Smith June 20, 1931, in Micawber, Okla. A lifelong resident of
Prague and Paden areas, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church of Prague.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Bob Smith, Jerry
Smith and Sam Smith, all of Prague; five daughters, Carley Day of Great
Bend, Joyce Gregory, Frances Simek, Sue Schima and Mindy Calger; 24
grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Ann Gregory; nine brothers;
eight sisters; and one grandson.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Prague
with the Rev. Tim Emmons officiating. Burial will be at Prague Cemetery.
Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague is in charge of arrangements.

LARNED - James Lyle Stout, 71, died Nov. 15 at his home in Larned.

Norma Colvin 1922-2000
ELLINWOOD - Norma Colvin, 78, died Nov. 15 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus, in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 21, 1922.
Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Kimple Inc. Funeral
Home in Ellinwood.

Cliff Riddle 1923-2000
PAWNEE ROCK - Cliff Riddle, 77, died Nov. 14 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus, in Great Bend. Survivors and funeral arrangements
will be announced by Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Donald E. Shaw 1923-2000
ALTON, Ill. - Donald E. Shaw, 77, died Aug. 9 at Anna Henry Nursing Home in
Edwardsville, Ill. He was born June 20, 1923, in Great Bend, the son of
James Shaw and Esther Bobeck Holbrook. He married Venida Steffen Spurgeon
Feb. 17, 1968, in Roxana, Ill. A resident of Alton, he was superintendent
with Hellrung Construction Company for 38 years. He retired in 1985.
Shaw was a member of Wood River Moose Lodge 1349, Alton Eagles and Veterans
of Foreign Wars. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home, two sons, four daughters, nine
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Private services were at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights,
Ill., with the Rev. Roy Gibbs officiating. Burial was at Rose Lawn Memory
Gardens in Bethalto, Ill.

Raymond Howard Smith 1916-2000
LARNED - Raymond Howard Smith, 84, died Nov. 13, at Larned Healthcare and
Living Center. He was born Sept. 29, 1916, in Trousdale, the son of Jesse
H. and Mary Lillian Poindexter Smith. He married Juanita M. Woelk in Albert
on Oct. 14, 1940. A resident of Larned since 1939, he was a retired
oil-well driller.
Smith was a member, Sunday school teacher and trustee of Grace Lutheran
Church, a member of Fort Larned Lions Club and a Melvin Jones Fellow, all
of Larned.
Survivors include one son, Billy Smith of Great Bend; one daughter, Beverly
Wilson of Larned; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton Smith and Bobby Smith.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. David Parks
officiating. Burial will be at Point View cemetery in Radium. Friends may
call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9-11 a.m.
Thursday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested to the
church, in care of the funeral home.

Maxine R. Ledford 1919-2000
LARNED - Maxine R. Ledford, 81, died Nov. 13 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born Oct. 4, 1919, in Newton,
the daughter of Jacob D. and Josephine Siebert Schmidt. She married Harold
Thomas Ledford April 3, 1945, in Larned. He died July 1, 1985. A lifetime
resident of Larned, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sisters, Fern Smith of Larned and Nell Thalheim of
McPherson. She was preceded in death by two sons, Loren Ledford and Kenneth
Ledford; three brothers, Dan Schmidt, Garfield Schmidt and Alfred Schmidt;
three sisters, Goda Jantz, Myrtle Haynes and Ella Pittenger.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Larned cemetery with the
Rev. Phil Ledford officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight and until
service time Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned.

CUNNINGHAM - Helen Price, 98, died Nov. 14. Survivors and funeral

Ethel F. Phillips 1903-2000
LURAY - Ethel F. Phillips, 97, died Nov. 12 at Russell Regional Hospital.
She was born Ethel F. Bear June 5, 1903, in Russell County. She married
Arthur Phillips. He died in 1968. A life-time resident of Russell County,
she was a homemaker and clerk at Libal's Grocery in Luray.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of Luray United Methodist Church, United
Methodist Women Luray Legion Auxiliary and Russell Veterans of Foreign Wars
Auxiliary.
Survivors include one sister, May Funk of Russell. She was preceded in
death by four brothers, Dean Bear, Lee Bear, Lloyd Bear and Myrl Bear; and
one sister, Olive Bear.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Gay
Robertson officiating. Burial will be at Russell City Cemetery. Friends
may call from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday
at Rodrick and Minear Funeral Home in Luray. Memorials are suggested to the
church or Luray American Legion Auxiliary, in care of the funeral home.

Josephine Kreie 1916-2000
STAFFORD - Josephine Kreie, 84, died Nov. 11 at Hutchinson Hospital. She
was born Oct. 12, 1916, in rural Hudson, the daughter of Joseph and
Josephina Frenzl. She married Ira "Ike" Kreie April 17, 1937, in Pratt. He
died April 28, 1988. A resident of Stafford since 1993, coming from Turon
and Hudson, she was co-owner of Ike and Jo's Restaurant.
Mrs. Kreie was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in rural Hudson
and the Hudson Extension Homemakers Unit.
Survivors include one son, Bill Kreie of Ulysses; one daughter, Bonnie
Miller of Macksville; one sister, Grace Bland of Stafford; five
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
six brothers and four sisters.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. George
Redington officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Friends may
call from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Memorials are
suggested to the church or Stafford District Hospital, both in care of the
funeral chapel.

Bessie B. Frydendall 1906-2000
SMITH CENTER - Bessie B. Frydendall, 94, died Nov. 12 at the Parkview Care
Center in Osborne. She was born Nov. 7, 1906, near Dispatch in Jewell
County, the daughter of Charles and Bertha Simmelink Goheen. She married
Milo E. Frydendall March 16, 1927. He died in 1992. A resident of Smith
Center, she was a homemaker, city treasurer, and worked at Lemon Grocery
Store and Drug Store in Portis.
Mrs. Frydendall was a member of Portis United Methodist Church, United
Methodist Women and the Prairie Larks Senior Citizens Club.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Frydendall of Ellinwood, Merrill
Frydendall of North Mankato, Minn., and Larry Frydendall of Belleville; two
daughters, Sue Ann Geiger of Salina and Gaylene Wiehl of Hutchinson; one
sister, Alice Lattin of Smith Center; 15 grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, LeRoy
Frydendall; two sisters, Oletha Vinsonhaler and Hazel Miller; and two
grandchildren, Curtis Frydendall and Mary Jane Frydendall.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Sherry
Clemons officiating. Burial will be at Downs Cemetery. Friends may call
from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Parkview
Care Center or the church, both in care of Domoney Funeral Home in Downs.
