Floyd C. 'Bus' Call 1915-2000

ARLINGTON - Floyd C. "Bus" Call, 85, died Dec. 20 at the Stafford District Hospital. He was born June 23, 1915, in Drumright, Okla., the son of Joe Woodson and Rachel Clark Call. He married Dorothy Janssen Nov. 8, 1942, in Great Bend. A resident of Arlington, coming from Otis, he was a welder. Call was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Edward Call of Wichita, Corey Call of Arlington and Jim L. Call of Lowell, Ark.; one daughter, Carmen Buehler of Arlington; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ cemetery in Holyrood. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice, in care of Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Dec. 21, 2000

Hilda P. Young 1905-2000

ELLINWOOD - Hilda P. Young, 95, died Dec. 21 at Ellinwood Long Term Care Center. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Dec. 21, 2000

Mary Pauline Barron 1916-2000

RUSH CENTER - Mary Pauline Barron, 84, died Dec. 19 at Rush County Long Term Care Home in La Crosse. She was born June 26, 1916, in Rush County, the daughter of Frank and Mary Hrdlicka Horacek. She graduated from La Crosse High School and Fort Hays State University with a teaching certificate. She married T.D. "Ted" Barron Aug. 5, 1944, in Junction City. He preceded her in death. A resident of Rush Center, she was a teacher and homemaker. Mrs. Barron was of the Christian faith. Survivors include one daughter, Rose Mary Dakovic of Wichita; one brother, John Horacek of Utica; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Horacek. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Janousek Funeral Home Chapel in La Crosse with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimers Association, in care of the funeral home. Great Bend (Kan.)Tribune, Dec. 20, 2000

Celia Margaret Frank 1917-2000

ALEXANDER - Celia Margaret Frank, 83, died Dec. 19 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. She was born June 21, 1917, in Russell, the daughter of William W. and Alma I. Miller Barrett. She graduated from Russell High School. She married Raymond Carl Frank April 1954, in Great Bend. He preceded her in death. A resident of Alexander, she was a bookkeeper for Bell Prairie Township and Alexander United Methodist Church. Mrs. Frank was a member of Alexander United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and a stamp club. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Boyle of La Crosse; three sisters, Wilmetta Dooley of Illinois, Roberta Kuhn of Hays and Nadia Carpenter of Sedan; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Barrett and Clayton Barrett; one sister, Emma Frances McGuire; and two grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church iwith the Rev. Buz Lambrecht officiating. Burial will be at Alexander Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Thursday at Janousek Funeral Home in LaCrosse. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 20, 2000

Lucille Wanker Hutton 1905-2000

WAKEENEY - Lucille Wanker Hutton, 95, died Dec. 19 at Trego County Long Term Care in WaKeeney. She was born Feb. 23, 1905, in Hunter, the daughter of Joseph Alexander and Margretha Armina Cloepfil Baird. She married Garland Wanker July 27, 1924, in Hill City. He died Oct. 4, 1953. She married Earl Hutton Dec. 19, 1963. He died Aug, 27, 1995. A resident of WaKeeney, coming from Larned and Shawnee, Okla., she was a retired Trego County probate judge and a soil conservation office secretary. Mrs. Hutton was a member of First United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 3449, both of WaKeeney. Survivors include four sisters, Hazel Stucklik of Silverton, Ore., Viola Smith of Quinter, Doris Squires of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Clarice McRae of LaJunta, Colo.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Deloris L. Morell; three brothers, Doyle Baird, Claud Baird and Clomer Baird; two sisters, Unis Wanker and Ruth Griffith Horak; and one granddaughter, Janice Colene Morell. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church in WaKeeney with the Rev. Rob Schmutz officiating. Burial will be at the WaKeeney City Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested to the Larned Garden Club, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 20, 2000

Opal Mae Manry 1918-2000

LARNED - Opal Mae Manry, 82, died Dec. 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born July 29, 1918, in Geary, Okla., the daughter of Robert and Katie Rupp Smith. She married E. Clifford Manry Aug. 24, 1938, in Perry, Okla. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a homemaker and retired secretary for the Larned Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Manry was a member of First United Methodist Church in Larned and served as past Sunday school superintendent, pastoral relations committee, staff-parish relations committee, Pawnee County Red Cross bloodmobile program, board of directors of Fort Larned Historical Society and past secretary, charter member and past president of the Larned Branch of the American Association of the University Women, and worked with the ECM in promoting county agricultural and 4-H club programs in Pawnee County. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, C. Laroy Manry of Great Bend and John R. Manry of Topeka; one daughter, Reba Mae Adams of Belpre; one sister, Louise Gladwell of Yates Center; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd Smith and Dale Smith; and one sister, Frances Mercer. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, all at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested to Fort Larned Historical Society or the Pawnee County 4-H Foundation, both in care of the funeral home. Dec. 20, 2000

Sister Edna Haefling 1926-2000

Sister Edna Haefling, 74, died Dec. 18, at Dominican Sisters convent infirmary in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Concordia, as Lucille Marie Haefling, the daughter of Marion and Mary Anne Beumer Haefling. She entered the Dominican Sisters Community Aug. 29, 1944, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 13, 1947. She celebrated her golden anniversary of religious profession in 1997. Sister Edna was a teacher of grade, junior high and high school students in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri from 1948 to 1983. During that time she also was principal of six parochial grade schools, attended Creighton University, and ended her educational career as receptionist and development director at Sacred Heart High School in Salina. Following these ministries she did microfiling at Central Kansas Medical Center and worked for Heartland Center for Spirituality, both part time positions in Great Bend. She is survived by three brothers: James Haefling of Richardson, Texas, Joseph Haefling of Richmond, Va., and the Rev. Maurice Haefling OSB of St. Benedict Abbey in Atchison; five sisters, Patricia Haefling of Lee's Summit, Mo., Sister Markita Haefling of Great Bend, Valaria Campbell of Kansas City, Mo., Dorothy Caciioppo of Kansas City, Mo., and Dolores Neidert of Loretto, Tenn. Sister Edna's body will lie in state in the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the convent. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Abbot Barnabus Senecal OSB officiating. Burial will be at the Sisters Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the convent from today to 2 p.m. Thursday at the convent. Memorials are suggested to: Dominican Sisters Ministry Fund, Office of Mission and Ministry, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, KS 67530-3692. Fryberger Funeral Home of Great Bend is in charge of arrangements. Dec. 19, 2000

Donald L. Shelton 1931-2000

LARNED - Donald L. Shelton, 69, died Dec. 17 at his home in Larned. He was born Nov. 10, 1931, in Larned, the son of Artie A. and Nola Esther Moore Shelton. He married Arlene M. Suiter Aug. 25, 1984. She died Sept. 18, 1999. A lifetime resident of Larned, he was a city power plant operator for 23 years. Shelton was of the Christian faith. He was a member of Larned Fire Department for 36 years and a past little league baseball coach. Survivors include four sons, Gary L. Shelton, Ronald W. Shelton, Richard A. Shelton and Kenneth Shelton, all of Larned; one daughter, Donna Kay Martin of Larned; one step-son, Ricky C. Boland of Pondcreek, Okla.; and one step-daughter, Jana D. Long of Delphi, Ind.; two brothers, Wayne O. Shelton of Borger, Texas, and Floyde Shelton of Monclair, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Leroy Shelton, William Shelton, Marvin "Tommy" Shelton and Art Shelton; and one sister, Opal Guell. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from noon to service time Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Larned Fire Department, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 19, 2000

Mildred Louise Soeken 1914-2000

CHASE - Mildred Louise Soeken, 86, died Dec. 16 at Rock Island, Ill. She was born May 8, 1914, in Macksville, the daughter of Arthur and Ida Schneider. She married Edward J. Soeken Oct. 9, 1938. He died Aug. 26, 1983. A resident of Rock Island, coming from Chase, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Soeken was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Island and a past charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lyons. Survivors include one son, Vernon Soeken of Rock Island; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Knop; and one brother, Edward Voight. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lyons Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Calvin L'Heureux. Memorials are suggested to the church in Lyons, in care of Sillin Funeral Home of Lyons. A memorial service will be held at the church in Lyons at a later date. Dec. 19, 2000

Olive Martha Meyer 1935-2000

STAFFORD - Olive Martha Meyer, 65, died Dec. 17 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born July 28, 1935, in Jetmore, the daughter of DeVern and Lena Delker Franklin. She graduated from St. John High School. She married Leroy Meyer Aug. 4, 1957, in St. John. He died June 17. A resident of Stafford since 1957, she worked on the family farm, was co-owner of Elroy's Pizza and Elroy's II , and a paraprofessional for the Stafford school district. Mrs. Meyer was a member of the Church of Christ, Culture Club and Oktoberfest Committee, all of Stafford. She was secretary for the Stafford County Fair Association for more than 20 years. Survivors include one son, Jeff Meyer of Stafford; two daughters, Cindi Martinez of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Jennifer Alpers of Stafford; and five grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church in Stafford with the Rev. Aaron Arthaud officiating. Burial will be at the Stafford Cemetery. Family will receive friends until 8 tonight at Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Memorials are suggested to the Stafford Educational Foundation, in care of the chapel. Dec. 19, 2000

C. E. Antenen 1905-2000

NESS CITY - C.E. Antenen, 95, died Dec. 18 at his home in Ness City. He was born June 5, 1905, in Ness County, the son of Alfred and Tillie Antenen. He married Margaret Miner Nov. 21, 1929. She died Sept. 9, 1991. A lifetime resident of Ness County, he was a farmer, stockman and worked as a John Deere dealer for 35 years. Antenen was the last charter member of the Ness City Rotary Club. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ness City and the Ness City Saddle Club. Survivors include one son, Gary Antenen of Ness City; one daughter, Jean Rumble of Great Bend; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church in Ness City. Burial will be at Ness City Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and until service time Wednesday, both at the church. Memorials are suggested to Ness City Rotary Club or the church, both in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home Inc. of Ness City. Dec. 19, 2000

Jason Wayne Befort 1974-2000

WICHITA - Jason Wayne Befort, 26, died Dec. 15 in Wichita. He was born Oct. 31, 1974, in Pratt, the son of Ken D. Befort and Lois J. Fisher. He was a 1993 graduate of Pratt High School. He attended Pratt Community College and was a 1998 graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in education. A resident of Wichita, coming from Pratt, he was a science teacher for Augusta High School, a middle school football coach, junior varsity basketball coach and a track coach. Befort was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pratt, Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and KSU Alumni Association. Survivors include his parents of Pratt; one brother, Mark D. Befort of Pratt; and one sister, Kim J. Voss of Mulvane. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pratt. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Pratt with the Rev. James Dieker officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery in Pratt. Friends may sign the register book at Ayers-Calbeck Mortuary in Pratt. Memorials are suggested to the Jason W. Befort Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the mortuary. Dec. 19, 2000

Theresa M. Miller 1906-2000

CLAFLIN - Theresa M. Miller, 94, died Dec. 15 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in ElDorado. She was born Nov. 30, 1906, in rural Claflin, the daughter of Joseph F. and Frances M. Schulte Liebl. She married Robert L. Miller Aug. 8, 1927, in Claflin. A lifetime resident of Claflin, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Miller was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Claflin. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Bernadette A. Spradling of ElDorado; one brother, Lawrence N. Liebl of Claflin; 12 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert J. Miller and James R. Miller; five brothers, Frank Liebl, Leo Liebl, Joe Liebl, Ambrose Liebl and Gail Liebl; and one sister, Viola Feist. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday and vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. David Flagor officiating. Burial will be at Claflin Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Conception Parish Center, Robert J. Miller Scholarship Fund or Lincoln Elementary School Library, all in care of the funeral home. Dec. 18, 2000

Betty J. Burns 1926-2000

LARNED - Betty J. Burns, 74, died Dec. 16 at Overland Park Manor in Overland Park. She was born April 2, 1926, in Hutchinson, the daughter of William W. and Helen R. Swift Collins. She married Ennis C. Burns Nov. 6, 1943, in Hutchinson. He died Oct. 8, 1989. A resident of Overland Park for two years, coming from Larned, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Burns was a member of First Christian Church in Larned, past honorary chairman of American Heart Association and past secretary of Wheatbelt Region for Girl Scouts. Survivors include one son, Kurt D. Burns of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Connie J. Burns of San Diego, Calif. and Innes L. Burns Hale of Fairway; one sister, Kathern C. Haning of San Diego; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Hugh Collins and Robert E. Collins. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairlawn Burial Park Mausoleum in Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 18, 2000
