Doris 'Jean' Thompson 1913-2001
BURDETT - Doris "Jean" Thompson, 87, died May 28 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 4, 1913, in Pawnee County, the daughter of George and Hallie Notestine Bindley. She married Howard Thompson Dec. 26, 1934, in Burdett. He died April 17, 1996. A resident of Burdett, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Thompson was a member of United Methodist Church, choir director, United Methodist Women and Extension Homemakers Unit, all of Burdett, and Sweet Adelines of Larned. Survivors include one son, John Thompson of Burdett; one daughter, Doris Chipman of Denton, Texas; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dan Thompson; one brother; and one sister. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Rob Smutz and Irving Jennings officiating. Burial will be at Burdett Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church or Gideons International, both in care of Great Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory in Great Bend. May 30, 2001

Mildred E. Hanhardt 1910-2001
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Mildred E. Hanhardt, 91, died May 27 at Integrated Health Services of Parkmoor in Colorado Springs. She was born April 18, 1910, in Council Grove, the daughter of Homer and Ethel Gaston Clabaugh. She was a 1931 graduate of La Crosse High School. She married Lester Van Horn July 4, 1931, in La Crosse. He preceded her in death. She married Reuben Hanhardt May 19, 1953, in La Crosse. He died Dec. 26, 1995. A resident of Colorado Springs, coming from La Crosse, Shaffer, rural Albert and Great Bend, she was a school teacher. Mrs. Hanhardt was a member of the Elks and Order of the Eastern Star, both of Great Bend. She was a 1997 nominee for Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame. Survivors include one sister, Estella Frank of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert N. Clabaugh. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Janousek Funeral Home Chapel in La Crosse. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Kansas National Education Association, both in care of the funeral home. May 30, 2001

Roy J. Kingsley Hessman 1919-2001
HUTCHINSON - Roy J. Kingsley Hessman, 81, died May 29 at Hospice of Reno County in Hutchinson. He was born July 7, 1919, in Leon. He attended Ford County schools. He married Grace Snyder. A resident Hutchinson, coming from Dodge City, he was a retired manager of Colorado Springs Wholesale Florals in Dodge City. Hessman was a member of First United Methodist Church, Wesley Weds Sunday school class and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Hutchinson. He was a veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart while on duty in the South Pacific. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Robert Hessman of Temecula, Calif., and Ronald "Rock" Hessman of Hutchinson; one sister, Betty Criss of Shawnee, Okla.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ness City cemetery with the Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Military graveside rites will be performed by Frank Stull of the American Legion Post 152 of Ness City. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday, all at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Reno County or donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home. May 30, 2001

Joyce Lee Jaynes 1923-2001
HOISINGTON - Joyce Lee Jaynes, 78, died May 27 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Wichita. She was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Hoisington, the daughter of Henry Edward and Ruth Whitcomb Hunt Herres. She married Lloyd L. Jaynes Feb. 12, 1943, in Phoenix, Ariz. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Jaynes was a member of Vine United Methodist Church in Hoisington, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and Great Bend Area Panhellenic. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Craig E. Jaynes of Jamestown, Ohio, and Brent A. Jaynes of Overland Park; two daughters, Jerree Cooper of Hoisington and Leesa Zimmerman of Columbia, Mo.; one brother, Ed Herres of Hoisington; and nine grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Hoisington with the Rev. Janet Myers officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Vine United Methodist Church or Clara Barton Foundation, both in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. May 29, 2001

James M. Currie 1913-2001
James M. Currie, 87, of Great Bend, died May 28 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. He was born Nov. 20, 1913, in Wellington, Texas, the son of Robert Lee and Mabel King Currie. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Larned, he was the owner of Currie's IGA grocery store in Great Bend. Currie was a member of First Bible Baptist Church in Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Owen of Houston, Texas, and Mary Wares of Larned; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Currie. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel in Great Bend with the Rev. Robert Morris officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. May 29, 2001

Benjamin 'Ben' F. DeHaven 1913-2001
HOISINGTON - Benjamin "Ben" F. DeHaven, 87, died May 28 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Abilene, the son of John Boyd and Minnie Gunzelman DeHaven. A resident of Hoisington, coming from Great Bend, he worked at the Meat Market in Great Bend and was a former owner of DeHaven Brothers IGA in Hoisington. DeHaven was a member of First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 331 AF and AM, both of Hoisington, and Isis Shrine of Salina. Survivors include two sisters, Clara Beldon of Salina and Alice Bennet of Wichita. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Charles DeHaven, Paul DeHaven, Dave DeHaven, Ralph DeHaven, Harry DeHaven, Henry DeHaven, Walt DeHaven and Bruce DeHaven. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Janet Myers officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Abilene cemetery in Abilene. Visitation will be until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Masonic Lodge or Clara Barton Hospital, both of Hoisington, both in care of the funeral home. May 29, 2001

Joseph F. Dolechek 1922-2001
CLAFLIN - Joseph F. Dolechek, 79, died May 28 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Dubuque, the son of Paul P. Sr. and Anna Weber Dolechek. He married Louise R. Schmidt Oct. 29, 1946, in Liebenthal. She died March 30, 1983. A lifelong resident of Claflin, he was a farmer and stockman. Dolechek was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both in Odin, and St. Catherine Catholic Church in Dubuque. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sons, Dennis Dolechek of Silver Lake and David Dolechek of Russell; one daughter, Delores Kaiser of Hoisington; one brother, Paul Dolechek Jr. of Hoisington; one sister, Theresa Ney of Hoisington; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother, Leo Dolechek; and two sisters, Kathryn Lang and Rose Miller. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary, all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Dubuque with the Revs. Pascal Klein and George Schmidt officiating. Burial will be at St. Catherine cemetery in Dubuque. Visitation will be until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine of Dubuque Heritage Association, Claflin Emergency Medical Service or Beaver Volunteer Fire Department, all in care of the funeral home. May 29, 2001

Alan Arthur 'Buzz' Orton 1938-2001
COUNCIL GROVE - Alan Arthur "Buzz" Orton, 63, died May 26 at his residence in Council Grove. He was born Feb. 9, 1938, in Alta Vista, the son of Alvin A. and Edith F. Williams Orton. He was a 1965 graduate of Council Grove High School. He married Mary Douglas in Council Grove. A resident of Council Grove, he was a retired conductor for the Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific railroads. Orton was a member of the Baptist Church and United Transportation Union. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Kim Price of Austin, Texas, Susan Clark and Cheryl Kinney, both of Tempe, Ariz.; four stepdaughters, Cathy Hawthorn of Allen, Pam Siegrist of Wilsey, Debby Ney of Hoisington and Linda Bennett of Great Bend; one brother, Dennis Orton of Strong City; one sister, Barbara McGlaun of Smyrna, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and 13 step-grandchildren. Inurnment services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Alta Vista Cemetery. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, in care of Kendal Funeral Chapel in Council Grove. May 29, 2001

Marion 'Marty' P. Keller Jr. 1930-2001
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Marion "Marty" P. Keller Jr., 70, died May 24 in San Antonio. He was born Nov. 17, 1930, in Charlottesville, Va., the son of Marion P. Sr. and Florence E. Hoy Keller. He married Marilyn Juergensen. A resident of San Antonio, he was retired from the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Civil Service. Keller was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War and USAF veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster and three Purple Hearts along with other combat and service medals. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, LeAnn Keller of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Russell "Bud" R. Keller of Richmond, Va.; and one sister, Elizabeth Bruton of Charlottesville. Inurnment will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery with full military honors. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to VNA Hospice of South Texas or Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital in San Antonio, both in care of Memorial Funeral Home in San Antonio. May 29, 2001

Eldon Lee Sanders Sr. 1932-2001
ST. JOHN -Eldon Lee Sanders Sr., 68, died May 26 at his home in St. John. He was born Nov. 8, 1932, in Macksville, the son of John Everett and Gladys Nellie Waters Sanders. He was a 1951 graduate of St. John High School. He married Edith L. Rodarmel Dec. 23, 1956, in St. John. A lifelong resident of St. John, he was a postal worker, oil field worker and city employee, all of St. John. Sanders was a member of New Hope Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War, former trustee of Odd Fellows Lodge, Rebekahs Lodge, Golden Belt Campers Club, Cardinal Campers Clubs, 20-yearvolunteer fireman and 19-year volunteer ambulance worker, all of St. John. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Wade L. Sanders and Steven Sanders, both of St. John, and Lee Sanders of Lebanon, Mo.; one sister, Marlene Weddle of St. John, four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one step great-grandson. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with the Rev. Rodney Lyons officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the chapel. May 28, 2001

Elizabeth Jeanne Degner 1921-2001
Elizabeth Jeanne Degner, 79, of Great Bend, died May 26 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born July 12, 1921, in Great Bend, the daughter of Elmer and Velma Cook Bortz. She married Herman Degner November 1941 in Great Bend. He died April 9, 1989. A resident of Great Bend, she was an employee of JC Penney's for 30 years in Great Bend. Mrs. Degner was a member of First Christian Church, Christian Womens Fellowship Women's Joy Group and Class Reunion Club of 1939, all of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Richard Degner of Rapid City, S.D.; two daughters, Jayma Graham and Velma Woody, both of Wichita; one brother, Don Baker of Great Bend; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral will be at1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Friends may call until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, all at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. May 28, 2001

Edith K. White 1910-2001
LARNED - Edith K. White, 91, died May 24 at Good Samaritan Center in Hays. She was born May 6, 1910, in Meade, the daughter of Howard W. and Ida Mae LeVan Fox. She married Asher A. White Sept. 20, 1931, in Larned. He died Nov. 12, 1980. A longtime Larned resident, moving from Cunningham, she was a homemaker. Mrs. White was a member of First Christian Church of Larned. Survivors include two sons, Asher Bob White of Hays and Philip LeVan White of Bella Vista, Ark.; one brother Clyde L. Fox of Denver; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Verda Lane and Dorothy Compton; and one brother, Howard W. Fox. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned, with the Rev. Daniel Lundgren officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice, in care of the mortuary. May 27, 2001

SUN CITY WEST, ARIZ. - Doris Jeffrey, 76, former resident of Great Bend, died May 25, at her residence in Sun City West. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Camino Del Sol Funeral Home in Sun City West. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospital for Children, in care of the funeral home.
