ELLINWOOD - Berenita M. Ross, 84, died Oct. 22 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born Dec. 11, 1916, in Collyer, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Carpenter Power. She married Francis Ross Oct. 2, 1944, in Collyer. A longtime resident of Ellinwood, she was a retired teacher, working at St. Joseph Catholic School for 24 years. Mrs. Ross was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all of Ellinwood. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Francis Ross and Terry Ross, both of Wichita and Kurt Ross of Evergreen, Colo.; one sister, Rose Tomanek of Wakeeney; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Altar Society Rosary will be at 3 today and a Vigil service will be at 7 tonight, both at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. David Flagor officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 24, 2001

Ellen Ehler 1934-2001
HOLYROOD - Ellen Ehler, 67, died Oct. 22 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born March 12, 1934, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Theodore and Thelma Hays Wilkens. She married Harold Ehler Feb. 14, 1954, in Lorraine. A lifelong resident of Ellsworth County, she was a homemaker, former secretary at USD 328 and worked at Craftworld in Ellsworth. Mrs. Ehler was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Holyrood. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Russell Ehler of Holyrood; two daughters, Cynthia Waugh of Arkansas City and Kimberly Howard of Hutchinson; one brother, Glen Wilkens of Overland Park; and five grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Mary Lou Klein officiating. Burial will be at St. Paul's United Church of Christ Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 24, 2001

John C. Woelk Jr. 1920-2001
RUSSELL - John C. Woelk Jr., 81, died Oct. 19 at Hospice Austin's Christopher House in Austin, Texas. He was born July 21, 1920, in rural Russell, the son of John C. and Katherine Meier Woelk. He graduated from Russell High School in 1938 and attended Fort Hays State University. He is a 1948 graduate of Washburn University Law School. He married Mary Wooster May 29, 1943, in Hays. A longtime resident of Russell, he was a lawyer. Woelk served as Russell County Attorney, Kansas state senator, chairman of the Kansas State Board of Social Welfare, member of Kansas Corporation Commission and local school board. He was a U.S. Marine Corps. veteran of World War II, serving as a pilot in the Pacific Theater of operations. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Chris Woelk of Lexington, Mo. and Bill Woelk of Wichita; two daughters, Cynthia Woelk and Sarah Woelk, both of Austin, Texas; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at First Congregation Church in Russell at a later date. There is no visitation at this time. Memorials are suggested to Russell Habitat for Humanity or the church. Oct. 24, 2001

Omar Lennen 1928-2001
CARROLLTON, Texas - Omar Lennen, 72, died Oct. 15. He was born Nov. 16, 1928, in Muskogee, Okla. He attended Great Bend schools, graduating in 1946. He married Shirley Lennen in 1985. A resident of Carrollton, he worked for Boeing Airplane Company in Wichita, The Burford Company International in Dallas, Texas, and from 1981 until his death was president and owner of Packaging Machinery Turnkey Systems. Lennen was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Philippines from 1946 to 1948 as a See Bee. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Monica Lennen; one sister, Louise Rutherford; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Memorial service will be at noon Saturday at Lebanon Baptist Church in Frisco, Texas. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society. Oct. 24, 2001

Carolyn Sue 'Butch' Beasley 1941-2001
PALISADES, Colo. - Carolyn Sue "Butch" Beasley, 60, died Oct. 22 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She was born Oct. 5, 1941, in Seminole, Okla., the daughter of Hugh L. and Ella Mae Irvin Cook. She attended schools in Hays and Logan and graduated from Fort Hays State University. She married Robert W. Beasley in July 1960. A resident of Palisades, she worked in accounting, the medical field and as a medical transcriptionist. Mrs. Beasley was a member of the First Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star, both in Hays. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Jeffrey Paul Beasley of Palisades; her mother of Hays; one brother, Jerry Cook of Arlington, Texas; and two sisters, Patricia Rundles of Franklin, Neb. and Judy Channell of Hays. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays, with the Rev. Gary Simon and Bob Cook officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Allen cemetery in Hays. Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 24, 2001

Ben F. Scheuerman 1901-2001
OTIS - Ben F. Scheuerman, 100, died Oct. 22 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. He was born Sept. 11, 1901 in Otis, the son of J.C. and Mary Stieben Scheuerman. He married Dena Hergert Nov. 30, 1924, in Otis. She died Sept. 9, 1996. A longtime resident of Otis, he was a banker at Bazine State Bank from 1944 to 1962 and was president of Otis State Bank from 1962 until his retirement in 1971. Scheuerman was a member of United Methodist Church and Lions Club, both of Otis. Survivors include two sons, Gail Scheuerman and Paul Scheuerman, both of Otis; one daughter, Orva Jean Wolfe of Bucklin; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Claude Scheuerman; and two sisters, Mathilda Schlegel and Alta Scheuerman. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Kathy Bannister officiating. Burial will be at Methodist cemetery in Otis. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington and from 9:30 until service time Thursday, at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 24, 2001

Paul E. Healy 1923-2001
McCRACKEN - Paul E. Healy, 78, died Oct. 21 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Jan. 15, 1923, in Hope, the son of Leo J. Healy and Anna Pientka Healy. He was a graduate of Bazine High School. He married Mary B. Wassinger May 10, 1949, in Ness City. She died Nov. 5, 1996. A lifelong resident of McCracken, he was a retired commercial painter. Healy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, all of McCracken. Survivors include two daughters, Marsha Healy and Paulette Thompson, both of Wichita; two sisters, Gertrude Campbell of Longmont, Colo. and Frances Janke of McCracken; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Cavanough. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in McCracken. Friends may call until 8 tonight, with a prayer service starting at 7 tonight, both at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's of McCracken Heritage Association, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 24, 2001

Lillie M. 'Grandma Lloyd' Nagunst 1896-2001
Lillie M. "Grandma Lloyd" Nagunst, 105, of Great Bend, died Oct. 23. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until funeral service time Friday, all at the mortuary. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by the mortuary. Oct. 24, 2001

Dori Ann Mead 1964-2001
PAWNEE ROCK - Dori Ann Mead, 36, died Oct. 21 at Select Specialty Hospital in Topeka. She was born Nov. 9, 1964, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of Thomas Sr. and Karen Nakamio Rodrigues. She married Terry A. Mead May 13, 1993, in Honolulu. A resident of Great Bend and Pawnee Rock since 1995, coming from Honolulu, she worked at Great Bend Industries. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Richard L.I. Mead of the home; two daughters, Doreena P. Rodrigues of Honolulu and Trixsi K. Rodrigues of Larned; her father of Kona, Hawaii; her mother of Honolulu; and three brothers, Thomas Rodrigues Jr. and Terrance Rodrigues, both of Honolulu, and Dominic Rodrigues of Newark, N.J. She was preceded in death by one brother, Donovan Rodrigues. Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel in Great Bend, with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Dori Ann Mead's Children's Education Fund or Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice of Great Bend, both in care of the funeral home. Oct. 23, 2001

Paul J. Stecklein 1917-2001
Paul J. Stecklein, 84, of Great Bend, died Oct. 21 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. He was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Munjor, the son of John and Mary Wasinger Stecklein. He married Wilma Harwell May 18, 1965, in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1945, coming from Munjor, he worked as an electrical contractor and owner of Paul's Electric in Great Bend. Stecklein was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; and two brothers, Clarence Stecklein of Hays and Nicholas Stecklein of Munjor. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Victor Stecklein, Richard Stecklein and Ralph Stecklein; and two sisters, Regina Brungardt and Frances Orr. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Munjor. Burial will be at St. Francis cemetery in Munjor. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to ElderCare, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 23, 2001

Alvina M. Keil 1914-2001
RUSSELL - Alvina M. Keil, 87, died Oct. 22 at Salina Regional Health Center, Santa Fe Campus in Salina. She was born Aug. 10, 1914, in Barton County, near Milberger, the daughter of Philip and Sophia Herdt Miller. She married Ruebin Keil in 1933. He died in 1977. A resident of the Russell area most of her life, she was a homemaker and worked at Russell's Inn, in the kitchen making salads. Mrs. Keil was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. Survivors include two sons, Eugene Keil of Great Bend and Gary Keil of Salina; two daughters, Arlena Nickelson of Gothenburg, Neb., and Maryann Keil of Russell; two brothers, Emanuel Miller of Hoisington and Melvin Miller of Hutchinson; one sister, Lenora Music of Hutchinson; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Jerry Keil, and infants Lester Keil and Glenn Keil; three brothers, Herman Miller, Earl Miller and Marvin Miller; and one grandson, Ivan Bridges. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Henry Hartman officiating. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran cemetery in Russell. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Heart Association, both in care of the mortuary. Oct. 23, 2001

Eldon J. 'Butch' Polzin 1940-2001
EMPORIA - Eldon J. "Butch" Polzin, 61, died Oct. 21, at Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka. He was born May 18, 1940, in Hoisington, the son of Matt and Irene Reif Polzin. A long time resident of of Emporia, coming from Beaver, he was employed by IBP in Emporia. Polzin was a member of the Catholic church. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include three sons, Freddie Polzin of Topeka, Terry Polzin of Olathe and David Polzin of Fort Worth, Texas; his father of Hoisington; two brothers, Ron Polzin and Bill Polzin, both of Hoisington; one sister, Maxine Olivier of Danville; his companion, Darlene Huffard of Emporia; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Janet Bieberle. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington, with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at St. John cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 5-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center, both in care of the funeral home. Oct. 22, 2001

Irene Catherine Bieker 1924-2001
HAYS - Irene Catherine Bieker, 76, died Oct. 20 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born Nov. 11, 1924, on a farm southwest of Hays, the daughter of Clements and Pauline Stubert Fisher. She married John P. Bieker Feb. 26, 1946, in Ellis. A resident of Hays, she worked as a clerk for the Jack and Jill Shop and was a waitress and former Travenol employee. Mrs. Bieker was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Veterans Foreign Wars Auxiliary and former member of Sunflower Polka Club, all of Hays. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Kenneth Lee Bieker of Ozawkie and Duane Francis Bieker of Hays; two daughters, Kathleen Ann Schmidt of Wichita and Paula Jean Johnson of Meriden; five brothers, Alfred Fisher of Palco, Wilfred Fisher and Clarence Fisher, both of Hays, Edwin Fisher of Ellis and Robert Fisher of Marysville; two sisters, Esther Bieker of Ellis and Helen Pfeifer of Hays; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A VFW Auxiliary service will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m., both at Hays Memorial Chapel in Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Revs. Don Zimmerman and David Metz officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's cemetery in Ellis. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9-9:45 a.m., all at the memorial chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the memorial chapel. Oct. 22, 2001
