Glen Carvin McDermed 1937-2001
CAREFREE, Ariz. - Glen Carvin McDermed, 63, died at home Feb. 3, 2001. He was born Dec. 19, 1937, in Lyons, the son of and Carvin N. McDermed Wilma Lenora Kent. Glen lived in Phoenix, Ariz., from 1959 to 1973 and retired to Carefree, Ariz., in 1993. After graduation from the University of Kansas, he became an engineer for the state of Arizona. The bulk of his career was with IBM; he then moved to an analyst position with Gartner Group. He was an active board member of the Canyon State Naturist. He is survived by his brother, Lyle Kent of Corsicana, Texas, and his five children, Scott Allen of Bend, Ore., Monte Lee of Chapel Hill, N.C., Diane Marie of Apex, N.C., Courtney Bryn of Spokane, Wash., and Elliott Kent of Kansas City; and four grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather. His interests included camping and woodworking. Burial and memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Geneseo Community Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society. Oct. 9, 2001

Kenneth L. DeWerff 1928-2001
ELLINWOOD - Kenneth L. DeWerff, 73, died Oct. 6. He was born May 10, 1928, in Ellinwood, the son of Chester L. and Clara Scheufler DeWerff. He married Bessie Davis Kasselman June 7, 1954, in Ellinwood. A lifelong resident of Ellinwood, he was a stockman and farmer. DeWerff was a member of First Baptist Church in Ellinwood and American Quarterhorse Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Steven Whynn DeWerff of Derby and Jeffrey Wayne DeWerff of Ellinwood; two daughters, Linda Lee Borror of Calhan, Colo., and Jane Kathleen Thier of Ellinwood; two brothers, Vernon DeWerff of Ellinwood and Neil DeWerff of Hays; two sisters, Edith Meyer of Alva, Okla., and Virginia Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. David Wesner officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to Fellowship of Christian Cowboys in Colorado Springs, Colo., in care of the funeral home. Oct. 8, 2001

Bennie Will Sargent 1916-2001
Bennie Will Sargent, 85, of Great Bend, died Oct. 6 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. He was born April 30, 1916, in Leoti, the son of George and Flora Ridge Sargent. He married Margaret Savoy April 17, 1938, in Lyons. She died March 2, 1982. He married Irene Josephine Ashe Lloyd April 22, 1982, in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1925, coming from Leoti, he was a heavy equipment operator for Jomax Construction Company, retiring in 1978. Sargent was a member of the Methodist church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Eagles Lodge, all of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth Kipp of Great Bend; one brother, Ray H. Sargent of Great Bend; two step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James H. Sargent and Harry L. Sargent. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dick Ogle officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John, with full military honors. Friends may call until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Fund, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 8, 2001

Susan P. Long 1935-2001
CARMEL, Calif. - Susan P. Long, 66, died Oct. 2 at her residence in Carmel. She was born Feb. 14, 1935, in Topeka, the daughter of Paul and Lillian Taylor Long. She was a resident of Carmel. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Great Bend Cemetery, with the Rev. Diana Coberly officiating. There is no visitation and no memorials are suggested. Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend is in charge of arrangements. Oct. 8, 2001

Thayne G. Cooley 1919-2001
BISON - Thayne G. Colley, 82, died Sept. 18 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born June 8, 1919 at Bison, the son of Elmer Manford and Harriet Fairbank Cooley. He attend La Crosse High School, and Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Mo. He married LoRee Elva Hall. A resident of Bison, he was Co-Owner of a Grain/Hardware Business. Mr. Coolley was a member of United Methodist Church in Bison, Veterans of Foreign Wars 3147, American Legion 0033, and Masonic Lodge. He was a Veteran of World War II serving in Europe. Survivors include his ife of the home; one daughter, Bonnie Jo Cooley Schultz; two sisters, Celene Hester, and Elva Cunninggham. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dean Cooley and Flloyd Cooley. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at the church with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Bison EMT Rescue Squad in care of Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. October 7 , 2001

Raymond Owen Tompkins 1925-2001
SANTA ANA, Calif. - Raymond Owen Tompkins, 76, died Oct. 2. He was born April 3, 1925, in Stafford County, the son of Lawrence and Gladys Miles Tompkins. He was a 1942 graduate of Antrim High School and a 1947 graduate of Kansas State University. He married Margaret Jane Russell Jan. 6, 1946, in St. John. She died May 16, 2001. A resident of Santa Ana, coming from Great Bend, he worked at Soil Conservation Service from 1947 to 1951 in Great Bend and as a land use technician for Orange County in California. Tompkins was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received a purple heart while participating in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. Survivors include three daughters, Sydney Perry of Indiahoma, Okla., Susan Hart of Orange, Calif. and Sheryl Tompkins of Culver City, Calif.; one brother, Kenneth Tompkins of Great Bend; and three granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one brother, Tommy Tompkins. Funeral will be Monday at Waverly Church in Santa Ana. Burial will be at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana. There is no visitation and no memorials are suggested. Oct. 5, 2001

Terry Steven Hoss 1946-2001
RUSSELL - Terry Steven Hoss, 55, died Oct. 3 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. He was born April 1, 1946, in Goodland, the son of John and Erma Anderson Hoss. He married Betty J. Witt in 1973 in Lincoln. A resident of Russell, coming from Bunker Hill, he was a truck driver and operated his own trucking business. Hoss was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6240. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors include two sons, Shawn Hoss of Hays and Cody Hoss of Russell; one daughter, Terri Jane Hoss of Hays; his father of Russell; one brother, Roger Hoss of Russell; one sister, Judy Novotny of Holyrood; and two grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pohlman's Mortuary Memorial Chapel in Russell, with the Rev. Earl Haggard officiating. Burial will be at Bunker Hill cemetery in Russell. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Russell Regional Hospital, in care of the mortuary. Oct. 5, 2001

Rexford E. Newell 1926-2001
STAFFORD - Rexford E. Newell, 75, died Oct. 3 at Leisure Homestead in St. John. He was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Stafford, the son of Harry and Viola Dunn Newell. He married Audra Kasselman Sept. 20, 1950. A lifelong resident of Stafford, he was a driller in the oilfield and was retired from Zenith Co-op. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Ben Newell of Sylvia; one daughter, Lynette Long of DeKalb, Miss.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Don Newell and Richard Newell. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Stafford, with the Rev. Guy Elliott officiating. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association or Chelsea Dick Fund, both in care of Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Oct. 5, 2001

Sister Kathleen Korf 1922-2001
WICHITA - Sister Kathleen Korf, ASC, 79, died Sept. 26. She was born May 20, 1922, in Hoisington, the daughter of William and Mary Thompson Korf. She was a graduate of St. Mary School of Nursing in Enid, Okla. A resident of Wichita, she was a nun of the Catholic church. Survivors include one brother, Robert Korf of Bullhead City, Ariz. She was preceded in death by three brothers, William Korf, James Korf and Henry Korf; and four sisters, Theresa Birzer, Mary Demel, Adelia Spanier and Elizabeth Newkirk. Funeral was Monday at Adorers of the Blood of Christ Catholic Church in Wichita. Memorials are suggested to the retirement of Sisters, ASC in Wichita. Oct. 5, 2001

Shirley Jean McCaskey 1922-2001
Shirley Jean McCaskey, 78, of Great Bend, died Oct. 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Sullivan, Mo., the daughter of John Leonard and Addie Josephine Collins Reed. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, she was a courier for ASAP Express. She was a member of Eastside Southern Baptist Church and Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both of Great Bend. Survivors include two sisters, Joyce Folsom of Great Bend and JoAnn Gable of Denver, Colo. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer Reed, Walter Reed, and Jesse Reed, and one sister Alma Brewer. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel in Great Bend, with the Rev. Julius C. Ellis officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight, with family receiving friends from 7-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 5, 2001

Madge Wilma Slade 1906-2001
ST. JOHN - Madge Wilma Slade, 95, died Oct. 4 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. She was born May 10, 1906, in St. John, the daughter of W.A. and Lula M. Adams McCandless. She was a graduate of Southwestern College. She married John "Fenton" Slade Aug. 3, 1930, in St. John. He died Aug. 26, 1968. A lifelong resident of St. John, she was a history teacher for Antrim High School and fourth grade teacher for the Great Bend School District. Mrs. Slade was a member of Antrim Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma and different E.H.U. clubs. Survivors include two sons, John Slade of Irving, Texas and Robert Slade of Bedford, Texas; one daughter, Lita Mae Christie of Stafford; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers; three sisters; and two grandchildren. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with the Rev. W. Harlan Rittgers officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel. Oct. 5, 2001

Herman B. "Blackie" Stieben 1914-2001
ROWLETTE, Texas - Herman B. "Blackie" Stieben, 87, died Oct. 2 at Rowlette Nursing Home in Rowlette. He was born May 22, 1914, in Bazine, the son of John B. and Elizabeth Bender Stieben. He married Ada H. Brening Sept. 21, 1940, in Ellinwood. A resident of Rowlette, coming from La Crosse and Springvalley, Calif., he was retired from the U.S. Navy. Stieben was a member of United Methodist Church in La Crosse, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, life member of American Legion and 32nd Degree Mason. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife of the home; and one son, Jon Stieben of Rowlette. He was preceded in death by one brother, Rubin "Shorty" Stieben; and one sister, Martha Stieben. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight with family receiving friends until 5 tonight, all at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to the church or San Antonio Masonic Burn Center, both in care of the funeral home. Oct. 5, 2001
