John T. Kachelman 1907-2001
ST. JOHN - John T. Kachelman, 94, died Nov. 27 at Pratt Regional Medical Center in Pratt. He was born Feb. 20, 1907, in St. John, the son of Roscoe H. and Mollie Smitson and the adopted son of S. J. and Alice May Kachelman. He married Kathleen B. Schroder March 31, 1927, in St. John. She died Sept. 5, 1947. He married Margaret J. Stafford July 25, 1949, in St. John. A lifelong resident of St. John, he was a farmer and stockman. Kachelman was a member of Antrim United Methodist Church, past president of Kansas State Rifle Association, board member of St. John National Bank, life member of National Rifle Association and past president of Stafford Gun Club. Survivors include his wife of the home; four daughters, Helen G. Milburn of Orlando, Fla., Alice J. Fox of Great Bend, Sandra L. Clark of St. John and Sierra S. Postier of Pratt; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Robin K. Scott; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel in St. John. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church or Pratt Regional Medical Center, both in care of the funeral chapel. Nov. 29, 2001

Charles 'Chuck' Edward Powell 1957-2001
HUTCHINSON - Charles "Chuck" Edward Powell, 44, died Nov. 25 at his home in Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 3, 1957, in Stafford, the son of Clifford Leon and Virginia May Sutherland Powell. He was a 1978 graduate of Stafford High School and a 1980 graduate of Dodge City Vocational College. A resident of Hutchinson since July, coming from Stafford, he worked as an automobile mechanic in Stafford and as a custodian for Petro Truck Stop in South Hutchinson. Powell attended Church of the Nazarene and Friend's Church, both in Stafford. Survivors include his mother of Stafford; two brothers, Jerry Leon Powell and James Ray Powell, both of Topeka; and three sisters, Edith Ann Lance of Davenport, Iowa, Mary Ellen Moore of Great Bend and Nancy Jean Anton of Plains. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Church of the Nazarene in Sylvia, with John Miller, Don Lance and June Worden officiating. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment of the ashes will be done at a later date. There is visitation and no memorials are suggested. Minnis Chapel in Stafford is in charge of arrangements. Nov. 28, 2001

Allene Georgia Knop 1913-2001
Allene Georgia Knop, 88, of Great Bend, died Nov. 27 at Cherry Village in Great Bend. She was born June 25, 1913, in Wichita, the daughter of Fred Martin and Emma Grace Oglesbee Bailey. She married Clinton J. Knop Aug. 11, 1935. He died Jan. 4, 1987. A long time resident of Barton County and a seasonal resident of Rockport, Texas, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Knop was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellinwood. Survivors include one son, Dale Knop of Ellinwood; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Gene Clinton. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend City Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellinwood or Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, both in care of the funeral home. Nov. 28, 2001

Joe Stanley Snodgrass 1954-2001
DODGE CITY - Joe Stanley Snodgrass, 47, died Nov. 26 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. He was born April 16, 1954, in Larned, the son of Paul E. and Romona J. Lewis Snodgrass. A resident of Dodge City since 1977, coming from Rozel, he was a truck driver for Irsik and Doll in Cimarron. Snodgrass is a member of United Methodist Church in Rozel. Survivors include his mother of Garfield; three brothers, James Snodgrass and Jerry Snodgrass, both of Rozel and John Snodgrass of Garfield; three sisters, Deborah Mangen of Cedar Vale, Diana Pfiefer of Hays and Donna Pivonka of Larned. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned, with the Revs. Tony Horsley and Ken Walker officiating. Burial will be at Garfield cemetery in Garfield. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Nov. 28, 2001

Montie E. Turnbull 1909-2001
PLAINVILLE - Montie E. Turnbull, 92, died Nov. 27 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born Nov. 7, 1909, in Charity, Mo., the daughter of William and Effie Maude Highful Atteberry. She married Irvin F. Turnbull Feb. 19, 1927, in Greensburg. He died May 11, 1996. A resident of Plainville, coming from Stockton, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Turnbull was a member of First United Methodist Church and Extension Homemakers Unit, both of Stockton. Survivors include four sons, Jack Turnbull of Plainville, Jim Turnbull of Hoisington, Dick Turnbull of Salina and Ron Turnbull of Midland, Texas; four daughters, Marguerette Hulse and Patricia Toelkes, both of Minden, La., Karrol Kirk of Hutchinson and Linda Normandin of Damar; one sister, Myrtle Clinesmith of McPherson; 27 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons; two daughters; three brothers; one sister; and two grandsons. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Tim Ault-Duell and Betty Bachman officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, north of Webster. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, both at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Glen Andrew Schuetz 1917-2001
Glen Andrew Schuetz, 84, of Great Bend, died Nov. 22 at Ellinwood District Hospital in Ellinwood. He was born July 6, 1917, in Bazine, the son of Andrew Frederick and Fay Ruth Crotinger Schuetz. He attended Kansas State University. He married Dorothy Newell June 26, 1938, in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1918, coming from Bazine, he owned and operated Schuetz Hardware and Appliance and Schuetz Real Estate and Construction, all in Great Bend. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post 180, Life member of both DAV and BPO Elks Lodge 1127 all in Great Bend, Shrine and Masonic Lodge, Grand Lodge A.F. and A.M. of Kansas Lodge 15, Kansas York Rite membership chapter 36 Mt. Nebo, Comdry 14 St. Omer, Isis Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., all of Salina, Rotary International, the Great Bend and Kansas Board of Realtors, the Golden Belt Country Club and Barton County Community College Booster Club. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Signal Corp veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Perry N. Schuetz, M.D. of Great Bend; one daughter, Sally J. Jensen of Great Bend; three sisters, Margaret Kottwitz of Great Bend, Shirley Snider of Mankato, and LuAnn Millard of Prairie Village; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday at the church, with the Revs. Hal Staats and Jeff Goss officiating. Private family burial will be at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Glen A. Schuetz Athletic Scholarship Fund at Barton County Community College, both in care of the funeral home. Nov. 28, 2001

Mary Christina Bortz 1901-2001
RUSH CENTER - Mary Christina Bortz, 100, died Nov. 25 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. She was born Nov. 18, 1901, in Great Bend, the daughter of Christian and Karen Marie Hansen Johnson. She married Charles L. Bortz Feb. 16, 1921, in Great Bend. He died Jan. 21, 1981. A resident of Rush Center since 1921, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Bortz was a member of United Methodist Church in Rush Center and La Crosse, United Methodist Women, Timken Coterie Club, Gay Gingham Unit and Grandma's Quilting Club. Survivors include two daughters, Eldora Conard of Timken and Marilyn Maresch of Great Bend; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Olaf Johnson, Herman Johnson, Victor Johnson, Gilbert Johnson and Alex Johnson. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Long Term Care Unit in La Crosse, in care of the funeral home. Nov. 27, 2001

Evan Oliver 'Pat' Hitch 1916-2001
ELLIS - Evan Oliver "Pat" Hitch, 85, died Nov. 23 at Ellis Good Samaritan Center in Ellis. He was born Sept. 9, 1916, in Sweetwater, Tenn. He attended Pittsburgh State College. He married Laura Louise Scovell Nov. 13, 1935. She preceded him in death. A resident of Ellis, coming from Burrton and Wichita, he worked for 50 years at Farley Machine Works as foreman of shops in Burrton and Sterling, Colo. He retired as general manager of the company. Hitch was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sons, Jim R. Hitch of Mountain Home, Ark. and Evan Mack Hitch of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Sheila Rae Eckman of Auburn, Ala. and Marcia Vira Whiting of Rapid City, S.D.; his step-mother, Mary Hitch of Wichita; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a late date. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Ellis Good Samaritan Center, in care of Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend. Nov. 27, 2001

Kenneth Neil Hoover 1923-2001
STAFFORD - Kenneth Neil Hoover, 78, died Nov. 21 at Golden Plains Care Center in Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 25, 1923, in Stafford, the son of Earl L. and Zella May Hoover. A life long resident of Stafford, he worked for Carey Hardware and the City of Stafford. Survivors include two brothers, Earl L. Hoover of Wichita and Joe S. Hoover of Kansas City; and one sister, Annabelle M. Wertz of Wichita. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bennett Hoover. Inurnment of ashes will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Stafford Cemetery. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. There are no memorials suggested. Minnis Chapel in Stafford is in charge of arrangements. Nov. 27, 2001

Edwina Mae Faulkner 1920-2001
ST. JOHN - Edwina Mae Faulkner, 81, died Nov. 25 at Integrated Health Services of Wichita. She was born Sept. 4, 1920, the daughter of William A. and Bessie Rich. She married James Washington Faulkner Jr. He preceded her in death. A resident of Wichita, coming from Valley Center, Lawrence, Topeka and St. John, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Roger LeRoy Faulkner of St. John; and one daughter, Linda Mae Faulkner of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Dwight Rich, Gene Rich, Jay Rich and Roger Rich; and one sister, Viola Hunt. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Minnis Chapel in St. John, with the Rev. David Ford officiating. Burial will be at Farmington cemetery in Macksville. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today, at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral chapel. Nov. 27, 2001

Charles Dean Foster 1919-2001
NATOMA - Charles Dean Foster, 82, died Nov. 23 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born Sept. 22, 1919, in Caney, the son of Charles Glenn and Alpha Ora McClure Foster. He was a graduate of Russell High School. He married Anita Foster Feb. 13, 1946, in Russell. A resident of Natoma, coming from Russell, he operated a Standard service station, worked for the past 40 years as an employee of Pohlman's Mortuary in Natoma and at Pohlman's Home Furnishing Company until its closure in 1966. Foster was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, American Legion and Lions Club, all in Natoma, and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Russell. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Charles "Chuck" Foster of Des Moines, Iowa, and Larry Foster of Wilson; three daughters, Karen Blank of Smith Center, Sharon "Susi" Clark of Natoma and Carol Gotsche of Garden City; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Foster; and one brother, Dale Foster. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. L.J. McDermott officiating. Burial will be at Natoma Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the mortuary and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Lutheran Hour and American Diabetes Association, both in care of the mortuary. Nov. 26, 2001

Avis A. Scheuerman 1912-2001
KENSINGTON - Avis A. Scheuerman, 88, died Nov. 25 at Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center. She was born Dec. 18, 1912, in rural Smith County, the daughter of August and Georgia Belle Courton Fiene. She married Chester Scheuerman. He preceded her in death. A resident of Kensington since 1992, coming from La Crosse, she was a homemaker and farm wife. Mrs. Scheuerman was a member of First St. John Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and Church Ladies Guild, all of Kensington. Survivors include one brother, Ivan "Swede" Fiene of Kensington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Dave Hutson officiating. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. at La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends may meet the family at the graveside service. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at Simmons Mortuary in Kensington and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the mortuary. Thomas Herrman 1949-2001
Thomas Herrman, 52, of Great Bend died Nov. 22 in Barton County. He was born Oct. 31, 1949 at Great Bend, the son of Wendelin Sr. and Dorothy Herl Herrman. He married Janice L. Corigan Oct. 29, 1971 in Great Bend. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he was a insulator at Superior Essex in Hoisington. Herrman was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. He was a U.S. Airforce Staff Sgt. veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Chris Herrman of the home; one daughter, Monica Ravenstein of Great Bend; four brothers, Hilbert Herrman and Leo LeRoy Herrman both of Great Bend, Linus Herrman of Norton, and Wendelin Herrman Jr., of Harrisburg, Pa.; four sisters, Leona Yarmer of St. Helens, Ore., Leota Sittingdown and Theresa Schartz both of Ellinwood, and Rosaline Herren of Great Bend; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Schartz. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Refuge in care of the funeral home. Nov. 25, 2001

Elsie Louise Robinson 1921-2001
ST. JOHN - Elsie Louise Robinson, 80, died Nov. 22 at Pratt Regional Medical Center in Pratt. She was born July 29, 1921 at Hays, the daughter of Fred W. and Elsie W. Riggs. She was a Hays High graduate, attended three years at Fort Hays College, and was a 1943 graduate of the University of Illinois. She married Alexander Jacob Robinson July 29, 1942 in Hays. A resident of Protection for 10 years, coming from St. John, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Robinson was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ in St. John, and Sigma Alpha Iota musical sorority. Survivors include her husband of the home; four sons, David Jon Robinson of St. John, Charles Aaron Robinson of Great Bend, Paul Stuart Robinson of Charleroi, Pa., and Stephen Nathaniel Robinson of Wichita; three daughters, Madelyn Kay Bales of Berryville, Ark., Alicia Ann Kosko of Gardner, and Marietta Jean Schroeder of Hutchinson; two sisters, Mildred Etlinger of Conn., Thelma Sloan of Overbrook, one brother, Donald Riggs of Hays; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Riggs, and one sister Ruth Mohit. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel in St. John, with the Revs. Alexander J. Robinson and David J. Robinson officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at the chapel in St. John. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral chapel. Nov. 25, 2001
