Magdalena M. Espinosa 1912- 2001
LYONS - Magdalena M. Espinosa, 89, died Nov. 22 at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home in Little River. She was born May 29, 1912 at Parral Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Jesus and Teresa Pastrano Navarro. She married Antonio Mosqueda in 1939. He died June 24, 1945. She married Jesus Santoyo June 10, 1973. He died June 10, 1980. A resident of Lyons since 1939, she was a retired Nurse, having worked at Sterling Hospital and Lyons District Hospital. Mrs. Espinosa was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and St. Paul Altar Society, both of Lyons. Survivors include two sons, Manuel Navarro and Robert Mosqueda both of Lyons; two daughters, Ida Wilson and Rachel Gonzales both of Lyons; 15 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Parish Rosary will be at 7 p.m. tonight at the church. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Thomas Leland officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. today at Sillin Funeral Home and from 6-8 p.m. tonight at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Kidney Foundation in care of the funeral home. Nov. 25, 2001

Verne Lee Rogg 1940-2001
Verne Lee Rogg, beloved husband and father, was born Oct.1, 1940. His death occurred Nov. 22, 2001 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. Verne graduated from Russell High School, attended Fort Hays State University and Wichita State University. He worked for Belles and Associates Construction Co. in Wichita for a number of years. With his family, in 1983, he moved back to Russell to take over the family farm. On Oct. 8, 1961 at Russell, he was united in marriage to Sandra Peck and to this union was born Pamela and Scott Rogg. He was a board member of the Bunker Hill Lions Club and Rural Water District #3, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #177 AF and AM, Russell Shrine Club, Shrine and Consistory of Salina, a former Agco board member and formerly, Kansas National Guard. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, Sandra; his children Pamela Reston of Va., and Scott of Russell; his brothers, Alan of St. Louis, Mo., Bradley of Wichita; In-Laws, Ralph and Hester Peck of Bunker Hill, Curtis and Mary Peck of Wichita, Dr. Roger and Norma Peck of Great Bend, Lauree and Ron Johnson of Ellis; his nieces and nephews; also a number of other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Eric and his parents Everette and Jean Crissman Rogg. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell. A private internment will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Bunker Hill Lions Club Building Fund, Russell Shrine Traveling Fund, or Trinity United Methodist Church all in care of Great Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory in Great Bend. Cleo Velma Buller 1916-2001
LARNED - Cleo Velma Buller, 85, died Nov. 24 at Central Kansas Medical Center St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born July 16, 1916, at Larned, the daughter of Clarence E. and Nellie Mae Unruh Smith. She was a graduate of Bethal College in North Newton. She married Ralph P. Buller, Aug. 7, 1940 at Pawnee Rock. A resident of Larned since 1943, coming from Lehigh, she was a schoolteacher, homemaker, and worked with the Ladies Mission Workers in Pawnee Rock. Mrs. Buller was a member of the Bergthal Mennonite Church in Pawnee Rock. Survivors include eight sons, Delbert Buller, and Thomas Buller both of Kansas City, Mo., Joel Buller of Fort Mohave, Arz., Stanley Buller of Denver, Colo., Daniel Buller of Albuquerque, N.M., Timothy Buller of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gordan Buller of Wichita, and William Buller of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Norma McGinnes of Council Grove, and Karen Simonsen of Victor, Mont.; three brothers, Vernon Smith and Homer Smith of Toccoa, Ga., Martin Smith of Poteau, Okla., two sisters, Eloise Smith of Wheatridge, Colo., and Velda Vogt of Derby; 22 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, and one brother, Allen Smith. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with Muriel T. Stackley officiating. Burial will be at Bergthal Mennonite cemetery in Pawnee Rock. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned, and until service time Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Mission Workers of Bergthal Mennonite Church in care of the mortuary.

Glen Andrew Schuetz 1917-2001
Glen Andrew Schuetz, 84, of Great Bend, died Nov. 22 at Ellinwood District Hospital in Ellinwood. He was born July 6, 1917 at Bazine, the son of Andrew Frederick and Fay Ruth Crotinger Schuetz. He attended Kansas State University and was a member of the Sigma NU Fraternity. He played on the KSU Varsity Basketball team, and played for the Webb Clothiers Semi-Pro Basketball Team. He married Dorothy Newell on June 26, 1938 at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1918, coming from Bazine, he owned and operated Schuetz Hardware and Appliance and Schuetz Real Estate and Construction. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, American Legion Post #180, Life member of both DAV and BPO Elks Lodge #1127, Shrine and Masonic Lodge, Grand Lodge A.F. and A.M. of Kansas Lodge #15, Kansas York Rite membership chapter 36 Mt. Nebo, Comdry #14 St. Omer, Isis Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Salina, Rotary International, the Great Bend and Kansas Board of Realtors, the Golden Belt Country Club and the BCCC Booster Club. He was on the original High Rise Board, who were responsible for purchasing the property and ultimately the project's completion. He developed five housing additions in Great Bend; Meadowlark, Gunn, Crescent Park, Hacienda and Edge Park additions. He built over 800 houses in Great Bend and organized the "Save Our City Group" which resulted in flood protection for Great Bend. In 1968 he became president of the Great Bend Board of Realtors, and in 1970, the National Association of Real Estate Boards honored him with a lifetime membership because he organized and implemented the first Great Bend multi-list. He was also a U.S. Army Air Force Signal Corp veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son Perry N. Schuetz, M.D. of Great Bend; one daughter, Sally J. Jensen of Great Bend; three sisters, Margaret Kottwitz of Great Bend, Shirley Snider of Mankato, and LuAnn Millard of Prairie Village; four grandchildren, Jennifer Jensen Graves of Hood River, Ore., Amy Schuetz and Justin Jensen both of Great Bend, and John Schuetz of Enid, Okla.; one great-granddaughter, Morgan Graves of Hood River. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday at the church with the Rev. Hal Staats and Pastor Jeff Goss officiating. Private family Burial will be at the Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, the family will greet friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, all at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Glen A. Schuetz Athletic Scholarship Fund at Barton County Community College both in care of the funeral home. Nov. 25, 2001

Bertha Belle Kelley 1926-2001
Bertha Belle Kelley, 75, of Great Bend, died Nov. 20 at her home. She was born Nov. 18, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Claude Ernest and Addie Southard Hardin. She married George W. Kelley Oct. 14, 1953, in Hutchinson. He died May 5, 1973. A resident of Great Bend for seven years, coming from Independence, Mo., she worked as a payroll clerk for the Kansas Highway Commission. Mrs. Kelley was a member of First Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary, all of Hutchinson, and American Business Women's Association, Salt City chapter. Survivors include one brother, Ernest T. Hardin of Kansas City; and one sister, Vivian Claudin Kirpwin of Kansas City. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard V. Hardin and Thomas E. Hardin; one stepbrother, Charles Shelp; and two sisters, Thelma Martin and Irene McGaffey. There is no funeral, cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be at Eastside cemetery in Hutchinson at a later date. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Salvation Army, in care of Great Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory. Nov. 23, 2001

Tillie Kleweno Martin 1916-2001
NESS CITY - Tillie Kleweno Martin, 85, died Nov. 21 at Ness County Long Term Care in Ness City. She was born Feb. 21, 1916, in Bison, the daughter of George and Katie Gillig Kleweno. She married Charles Martin Jan. 23, 1958, in Hutchinson. He died June 13, 1985. A resident of Ness City, coming from Great Bend and Bazine, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one brother, Reuben Kleweno of Wichita; and one sister, Inez Royer of Ness City. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Kleweno and Walter Kleweno; and one sister, Alice Margheim. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Bazine, with the Rev. Buzz Lambrecht officiating. Burial will be at Bazine Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City and from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Nov. 23, 2001

Roy L. Byers 1926-2001
HOISINGTON - Roy L. Byers, 75, died Nov. 20 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born July 26, 1926, in Great Bend, the son of Earl J. and Florence Curry Byers. He married Gladys Steiner June 4, 1955, in Hoisington. A lifelong resident of Barton County, he worked as an electrical distribution superintendent for the city of Hoisington for 32 years. Byers was a member of the Protestant faith, Veterans of Foreign Wars 7428 and American Legion 286, all of Hoisington, Elks Lodge and Eagles Lodge, both of Great Bend, National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, David A. Byers of Hoisington and Daniel J. Byers of Newton; two daughters, Deborah Fallis and Denise Wheeler, both of Wichita; one brother, Wendell W. Byers of Great Bend; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Sharon Dale Byers; his twin brother, Ray Byers; and one sister, Arline Thompson. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery with military graveside services. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Kansas Wildlife and Parks/Cheyenne Bottoms or American Lung Association, both in care of the funeral home. Nov. 22, 2001

Geraldine Faye Staats 1923-2001
SYLVIA - Geraldine Faye Staats, 78, died Nov. 20 at Midland Hospice in Topeka. She was born Sept. 24, 1923, in Morton County, the daughter of Walter and Inez Mangels Stone. She was a graduate of Sylvia High School and Sid's Cosmetology School in Hutchinson. She married Wesley Staats May 2, 1942, in Hutchinson. He died April 19, 1990. A resident of Topeka, coming from Sylvia, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Staats was a member of Order of the Eastern Star of Sylvia, where she was a past worthy matron. Survivors include one son, Roger E. Staats of Bedford, Texas; one brother, Lloyd A. Stone of Emporia; one sister, Maxine P. Ashford of Wichita; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Delores F. Perkins. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Burial will be at Sylvia Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to Midland Hospice or American Cancer Society, both in care of the chapel. Nov. 22, 2001

Margaret V. Knorr 1913-2001
CLAFLIN - Margaret V. Knorr, 88, died Nov. 20 at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in Dallas, Texas. She was born Oct. 28, 1913, in Ellinwood, the daughter of Mathias and Agnes Shaefer Heyne. She married Harry Walter Knorr May 12, 1936, in Ellinwood. He died Dec. 27, 1990. A resident of Dallas for 1 1/2 years, coming from Claflin, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Knorr was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Altar Society, all of Claflin. Survivors include one daughter, Sue Smith of Dallas; four sisters, Barbara Apel of Great Bend, Clara Whitney of Irving, Texas, Monica Robl of Ellinwood and Alfrieda Miller of Kinsley; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ferdinand Heyne, Phillip Heyne and Phillip Heyne; and two sisters, Rosa Kramp and Caroline Heyne. Vigil service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. David Flagor and James J. Roth officiating. Burial will be at Claflin Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home. Rose J. Moos 1904-2001
ELLINWOOD - Rose J. Moos, 97, died Nov. 20 at the long-term care unit at Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born Aug. 5, 1904, in Loyal, Wis., the daughter of Nicholas and Catherine Ney Mannebach. She married Frank N. Moos Feb. 26, 1924, in Seguin. He died Oct. 8, 1978. A resident of Ellinwood since 1944, she was a retired St. Joseph's School cook and a homemaker. Mrs. Moos was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Heritage Club, all of Ellinwood. Survivors include four daughters, Bernice Petz and Delores Bressler, both of Ellinwood, Velma Wornkey of Liberal and Thelma Cole of Plattsmouth, Neb.; 29 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by three sons, Richard Moos, Larry Moos and Eugene Moos; and one daughter, Ermina Moos. Altar Society service followed by a Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Kimple Inc. Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. David Flagor officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 5-8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's School Endowment, Heritage Club or Ellinwood Ambulance Fund, all in care of the funeral home. Nov. 21, 2001

Charlene R. Smith 1944-2001
LARNED - Charlene R. Smith, 57, died Nov. 20 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born Feb. 13, 1944, in Woodward, Okla., the daughter of Charles and Naomi Teeters Stewart. She married Terry D. Smith June 24, 1962, in Larned. A resident of Larned since 1955, she was a homemaker and genealogy researcher. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Larned. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Troy Smith and Trent Smith, both of Larned, and Tad Smith of Shawnee; one daughter, Doris Tebow of Quinter; one brother, David Stewart of Larned; two sisters, Linda Childers of Harveyville and Shirley Shaw of Fort Worth, Texas; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by twin infant brothers, Wesley Stewart and Lesley Stewart. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. Brad Richardson and Roy Savage officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Eulalia S. Mendez 1935-2001
SALINA - Eulalia S. Mendez, 66, died Nov. 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 12, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Ferancio and Louisa Alejandro Salazar. She married Richard V. Mendez Feb. 11, 1952, in San Antonio. He died Aug. 14, 2000. A resident of Salina for the past two years, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Gilbert Mendez of Great Bend; four daughters, Diana Collins of Great Bend, Sylvia Bodillia of San Antonio, Mary Mendez and Irene Duke, both of Salina; two brothers, Ferancio Salazar Jr. of Mason City, Iowa, and Gilbert Salazar of San Antonio; two sisters, Lupe Martinez and Nancy Polos, both of San Antonio; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Rosary service will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Great Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory in Great Bend. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery in Great Bend, with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Friday and from 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday, all at the mortuary. There are no memorials suggested. Nov. 21, 2001
