Fairy L. Brown 1932-2001
SALINA - Fairy L. Brown, 69, died Nov. 15 at Salina. She was born Sept. 3, 1932, at Bunker Hill. She married Ronald Brown Sr. A resident of Salina, she was a homemaker, worked at the telephone company in Junction City and at the Bear House Cafe in Bunker Hill. Mrs. Brown was a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in Bunker Hill. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Mark Goodheart of Bison and Dr. Timothy L. Goodheart of Olathe; two stepsons, Ronald Lee Brown Jr. and Rodney D. Brown, both of Salina; two stepdaughters, Penny J. Hughes of McLouth and Becky L. Tappendick of Norfolk, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Candis Marie Phillips. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ryan Mortuary in Salina with the Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at Gypsum Hill cemetery in Salina. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Bunker Hill Museum, in care of the mortuary. Great Bend (Kans.) Tribune Nov. 18, 2001

Vincent Lee Soerries 1957-2001
PRATT - Vincent Lee Soerries, 43, died Nov. 7 at his home in Albuquerque, N.M. He was born Dec. 5, 1957, in Pratt, the son of William F. and Melba Jo Jarnagin Soerries. He graduated from Pratt High School and Wichita State University. He was a resident of Albuquerque. Soerries was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pratt. Survivors include his father of Pratt; his stepmother, Mary Ann Soerries of Pratt; and two stepsisters, Cathy Schepers of Liberal and Rae Ann Brack of Great Bend. Vigil service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Jim Dieker officiating. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery in Pratt. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart School Technology Fund, in care of Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary in Pratt. Nov. 16, 2001

Betty Jane Dougherty 1934-2001
RUSSELL - Betty Jane Dougherty, 67, died Nov. 14 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. She was born May 13, 1934, in Barton County, the daughter of Christ and Esther Steinley Hilgenberg. She was a graduate of Dorrance High School in Dorrance. She married William A. Dougherty May 30, 1954, in Russell. He died Feb. 19, 1999. A resident of Russell, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Dougherty was a member of Dubuque Lutheran Church in Dubuque. Survivors include one son, Mitchel Dougherty of Russell; two daughters, Vicki Dougherty and Joetta Powell, both of Russell; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one half-brother, John Weimer. There are no services or visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Russell Public Library, in care of Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell. Nov. 16, 2001

Bob D. Vanek 1936-2001
SYLVAN GROVE - Bob D. Vanek, 65, died Nov. 13. He was born Jan. 11, 1936, in Lincoln County. A resident of Sylvan Grove, he was a farmer and stockman. Survivors include his wife, Vanita, of the home; two daughters, Tina Smith of Coffeyville and Dara Vanek of Parker, Colo.; one brother, Kay Vanek of Holyrood; one sister, Janice Wilson of LaJunta, Colo.; and one grandchild. Funeral was today at 10 a.m. at Foster Mortuary Chapel in Wilson. Burial with military graveside honors will be at Wilson City cemetery in Wilson. Memorials are suggested to Holy Name Catholic School in Coffeyville or Wilson/Dorrance American Legion, both in care of the mortuary. Nov. 16, 2001

Sarah Kaiser 1899-2001
OTIS - Sarah Kaiser, 102, died Nov. 13 at Good Samaritan Center in Lyons. She was born Feb. 12, 1899, in Bison, the daughter of John J. and Elizabeth Schriner Scheuerman. She married John H. Kaiser May 8, 1918, in Otis. He died Feb. 21, 1976. A lifelong resident of Otis, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Kaiser was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ladies Church Circle, church choir and organist, all of Otis. Survivors include two daughters, Johnetta Rolfs of Lyons and Leona Kraus of Monument, Colo.; two sisters, Esther Brack and Sophie Parsons, both of Andover; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald R. Kaiser; seven brothers, Henry Scheuerman, Adam Scheuerman, Johnnie Scheuerman, Pete Scheuerman, Herman Scheuerman, Jack Scheuerman and Elmer Scheuerman; and three sisters, Katie Repp, Elizabeth Hartman and Marie Meier. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church in Otis, with the Revs. Jeri Dexheimer and Mary Kaiser officiating. Burial will be at Otis Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Center, Lutheran World Relief or Martin Luther Home, all in care of the funeral home. Nov. 15, 2001

William Thomas 'Tom' Edwards 1926-2001
BISON - William Thomas 'Tom' Edwards, 75, died Nov. 13 at his home near Bison. He was born Sept. 13, 1926, near Bison, the son of Everett Sr. and Frances Bitter Edwards. He married Velma L. Myers Nov. 4, 1949, in La Crosse. He was a lifelong resident of Bison. Edwards was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Cheree Edwards of Arvada, Colo., and Darla Witthuhn of Ness City; four brothers, Everett Edwards Jr., Elbert Edwards and Zane Edwards, all of Bison, and Forrest Edwards of Russcavelle, Ind.; five sisters, Ladine Peterson of Pawnee Rock, Hazel Stump of Larned, Holly Brack of Spearman, Texas, Ruth Ann Krug of La Crosse and Minetta Smith of Pawnee Rock; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bob Edwards; and one sister, Lois Edwards. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City. Burial will be at La Crosse Cemetery. There is no visitation and no memorials are suggested. Nov. 15, 2001

Donald D. Princ 1933-2001
WILSON - Donald D. Princ, 68, died Nov. 12 at his home in Wilson. He was born April 8, 1933, in Wilson, the son of Frank Sr. and Emma Keller Princ. He married Shirley Kuck April 10, 1953, in Wilson. A lifelong resident of Wilson, he was a carpenter, farmer and stockman. Princ was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wilson. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Tracy Nail of Vinita, Okla., Terri Parks of Ellsworth and Torey Nondorf of Wilson; one brother, Frank Princ of Wilson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Trent Princ. Funeral will be at 2 today at Foster Mortuary Chapel in Wilson, with Dr. Dennis Kepka officiating. Burial will be at Wilson City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Wilson Senior Center, in care of the mortuary. Nov. 15, 2001

Wilfred Francis Jacobs 1934-2001
LA CROSSE - Wilfred Francis Jacobs, 67, died Nov. 7 at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus in Hays. He was born May 12, 1934, in Cordia, the son of Adam Jr. and Augustina Wassinger Jacobs. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he worked as an agricultural laborer before his retirement. Jacobs was a U.S. Army veteran, serving for 20 years. Survivors include two brothers, Virgil Jacobs of La Crosse and Anthony Jacobs of Godfrey, Ill.; and one sister, Sharon Swann of Oklahoma City, Okla. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Leroy Jacobs, Donald Jacobs, Darald Jacobs, Charles Jacobs and Larry Jacobs. Graveside services were Nov. 8 at La Crosse City Cemetery, with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Memorials are suggested to St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse, in care of Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Nov. 15, 2001

Louis 'Lee' Smith 1922-2001
LARNED - Louis "Lee" Smith, 79, died Nov. 13 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born March 28, 1922, in Larned, the son of Spencer G. and Nellie Johnson Smith. He married Helen E. Hinderliter June 4, 1944, in Emporium, Penn. A lifelong resident of Larned, he was a retired electrical contractor and plant engineer for Cross Manufacturing in Lewis. Smith was a member of First United Methodist Church in Larned. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Spencer L. Smith of Topeka; three daughters, Donna Patton, Jo Ann Dickerson and Marsha Harris, all of Wichita; one brother, Dean S. Smith of New Carrollton, Md.; one sister, Ruth Gore of Ingram, Texas; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned, with the Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Kansas State University Cancer Research Fund, in care the funeral home. Nov. 15, 2001

Mary B. Kober 1920-2001
KINSLEY - Mary B. Kober, 80, died Nov. 11 at Independence Manor Care Center, Independence, Mo. She was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Missouri, the daughter of Miley Hawkins and Nettie Belle Kinsey Williams. She married Leonard Kober June 19, 1946. A long time resident of Kinsley, she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Jim Singleton of Lake Tapawingo, Mo., and Vernon Kober of Topeka; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Ray Arnrich and Robert Lee Kober; and seven brothers and sisters. Family gathering will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 24 at Lake Tapawingo Clubhouse in Lake Tapawingo. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. There are no memorials suggested. Burkhart Funeral Chapel in Dodge City is in charge of arrangements. Nov. 15, 2001

Monsignor Quintin J. Malone 1914-2001
WICHITA - Monsignor Quintin J. Malone, 87, died Nov. 14 in Wichita. He was born in 1914. He was a graduate of Chase High School and Benedictine College. He graduated from seminary in 1938 in St. Louis and was ordained that same year. A resident of Wichita, he was a retired priest. Survivors include four nephews, Kenneth Malone of Lyons, Steve Thomas of Hutchinson, John Thomas of San Antonio, Texas, and Terry Thomas of Monument, Colo.; four nieces, Patricia Peebler of Houston, Texas, Elizabeth Woolley of Bakersfield, Calif., Marcia Malone-Tedder and Marie Harville, both of Wichita. He was preceded in death by one brother, Raphael L. Malone; and one sister, Rita K. Thomas. Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Wichita. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's cemetery in Chase. No visitation is listed. Memorials are suggested to Newman University Scholarship Fund or Priest Retirement Fund, both in care of Culbertson-Smith Mortuary in Wichita. Nov. 15, 2001

Elmer A. Berens 1925-2001
VICTORIA - Elmer A. Berens, 76, died Nov. 13 at his home in Victoria. He was born Jan. 16, 1925, in Vincent, the son of Ulrich H. and Elizabeth VonLintel Berens. He was a 1943 graduate of Schoenchen High School in Schoenchen. He married Dolorosa Kuhn June 9, 1949, in Victoria. She died Feb. 17, 1992. A resident of Victoria, coming from Vincent, he was a farmer and stockman. Berens was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Meal Site, all of Victoria and past member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Vincent, where he served on the church committee. He served eight years on Victoria School Board, 11 years on Hope Valley School Board, 10 years on Freedom Township Board Committee, one year on Victoria Co-op Board and one year on the FHA Board. Survivors include three sons, Samuel Berens of Colorado Springs, Colo., Roy Berens of Jacksonville, Fla. and Karl Berens of Bixby, Okla.; three daughters, Connie Dinkel of Victoria, Vickie Dreiling of Great Bend and Pamela Clark of Olathe; two brothers, Ben Berens of Great Bend and Victor Berens of Quinter; two sisters, Theckla Haas of Hays and Irene Dinkel of Victoria; 14 grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis Berens, Otto Berens and Fidelis Berens. Vigil service followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cline's Mortuary in Victoria. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Maris Goetz officiating. Burial will be at St. Fidelis Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30-9:45 a.m. Friday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Diabetes Association Hays Area Support Group or Masses, all in care of the mortuary. Nov. 14, 2001

Clarence J. Bunzel Jr. 1925-2001
HOISINGTON - Clarence J. Bunzel Jr., 76, died Nov. 10 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born April 17, 1925, in Denlow, Mo., the son of Clarence Sr. and Della Upshaw Bunzel. He married Nona Gregg Aug. 18, 1946, in Great Bend. She died July 17, 1990. A resident of Hoisington for eight years, coming from Great Bend, he retired in 1991 as a maintenance supervisor for Great Bend Housing Authority and had previously worked for 35 years as a salesman. Bunzel was a member of Central Baptist Church in Great Bend and Hoisington Kiwanis Club. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps. veteran of World War II. Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Marsh of Great Bend; one sister, Hazel Hathaway of Norwalk, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Stephen C. Bunzel; and three brothers, Blake Bunzel, Chester Bunzel and Gerald Bunzel. Funeral will be at 2 today at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dick Ogle officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until service time today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home. Great Bend (Kan.) Funeral Home, Nov. 13, 2001
