Dorothy L. Denton 1914-2001
OTTAWA - Dorothy L. Denton, 87, died Aug. 14 at Richmond Care Center in
Richmond. She was born Aug. 3, 1914, in Elk City, the daughter of Adonijah
F. and Maude E. Harrison Clingan. She married William F. Denton April 28,
1934, in Shidler, Okla. He died June 24, 1996. A resident of Ottawa for
eight years, coming from Bushton, she worked as a bookkeeper at Bushton
State Bank.
Mrs. Denton was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ottawa and a
longtime member of United Methodist Women. She was a Sunday school teacher
and sponsor of the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Survivors include two sons, W. Neil Denton of Danville, Ind., and Don
Denton of Ottawa; one sister, Mary Williams of Phoenix, Ariz.; six
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in
Ottawa, with the Rev. Cliff Burke officiating. Burial will be at Highland
Cemetery in Ottawa. Friends may call from 12:30-8 p.m. Sunday, with family
receiving from 7-8 p.m., all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested
to Ottawa Library - Children's Department, in care of the funeral home.

Robert Lee Underwood 1929-2001
EL CAJON, Calif. - Robert Lee Underwood, 71, died June 24 in El Cajon. He
was born July 26, 1929, in Junction City, the son of E.C. and Josephine
Underwood. He married Dolly Underwood. A resident of El Cajon, he was a
retired Gunnery Sgt. in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Underwood was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars and Lions Club, both of
El Cajon. He was a veteran of the USMC.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Robert Lee Underwood Jr.
of El Cajon; two daughters, Linda Underwood and Janice Underwood, both of
Biloxi, Miss.; three brothers, Bill Underwood and J.D. Underwood, both of
Council Bluffs, Iowa and Bruce Brack of Mullinville; four sisters, Sally
Basham of Lincoln, Neb., Kay Bredfeldt of Bellevue, Neb., Beverly Nuss of
Hays and Lynn Litson of LaCrosse; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by one son, Michael Underwood; and two sisters, Eleanor Hospodka and
Barbara Underwood.
Graveside service will be at 10:30 Saturday at Hoisington cemetery with
military graveside rites by VFW Post 7428 and American Legion Post 286.
There will be no visitation and no memorials are suggested. Arrangements
are by Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington.

Teresa Rose Pollard Ricketts 1915-2001
LYONS - Teresa Rose Pollard Ricketts, 86, died Aug. 14 at Hutchinson
Hospital in Hutchinson. She was born Jan. 16, 1915, in Caney, the daughter
of Charles and Mary Harris. She married E. B. "Snub" Pollard June 14, 1931,
in Purcell, Okla. He died Jan. 9, 1980. She married Roscoe Ricketts Nov. 3,
1981, in Lyons. He died June 17, 1984. A resident of Lyons, coming from
Claflin and Norton, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Ricketts was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Altar Society and
Silver Threads, all of Lyons; volunteered at Samaritan Center and Park
Place Apartments, both of Lyons.
Survivors include two daughters, Jackie Dressler of Tulsa, Okla. and Mary
Schoonover of Lyons; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret
Ettinger; and one grandson, Tim Dressler.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Funeral will be at 2 p.m.
Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Thomas Leland officiating. Burial
will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Friday
at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons and from 6-8 p.m. Friday, at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Lyons Good Samaritan Center Assisted Living,
Rice County Community Foundation Building or the donar's choice, all in
care of the funeral home.

Charles E. Bennett 1924-2001
WICHITA - Charles E. Bennett, 77, died Aug. 14 at his residence in
Wichita. He married Wilma R. Bennett. A resident of Wichita, he was a
retired typesetter for the Oakland (Calif.) Tribune.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Alvin Munz of Great Bend
and Olen Munz of Iuka; three daughters, Bonnie, Donna and Alayne; one
brother, Richard Bennett of Folson, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Church of the Magdalen in Wichita.
Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity cemetery in Hudson. There is
no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Kansas, American
Diabetes Association or American Heart Association, all in care of Hillside
Funeral Home "West" in Wichita.
Aug. 16, 2001

Leo T. Walter 1912-2001
SALINA - Leo T. Walter, 89, died Aug. 14. He was born Aug. 2, 1912, in
Wilson, the son of David and Anna Eichman Walter. He married Elizabeth
Bartunek Aug. 14, 1940, in Lincoln. She died June 9, 2000. A resident of
Salina, he was a farmer and stockman.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Walter, Elsie Wendell and Betty
Rigney, all of Salina; one sister, Elma Steinle of Wilson; four
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and five
stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wilson.
Burial will be at Wilson City Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight at
Foster Mortuary in Wilson and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the
church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the mortuary.

Nina I. Nelson 1910-2001
LINDSBORG - Nina I. Nelson, 90, died Aug. 13 at Bethany Home in Lindsborg.
She was born Dec. 5, 1910, in Garrison, the daughter of Charles and Helen
S. Carlson Fritz. She married Raymond E. Nelson Feb. 12, 1933, in Oldsburg.
He died April 8, 1974. A resident of Linsborg, coming from Manhattan, she
was a retired employee of Kansas State University Student Union in
Manhattan.
Mrs. Nelson was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Lindsborg and past
member of First Lutheran Church in Manhattan.
Survivors include one son, Byron Nelson of Great Bend; two daughters,
Ramona Hanson of Stout, Iowa, and Margene Willis of Conway, S.C.; 13
grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one
sister, Hildred Willingham.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bethany Home Chapel in
Lindsborg, with the Rev. Don Hawk officiating. Graveside service will be at
2 p.m. Thursday at Maridahl Lutheran cemetery in Oldsburg, with the Rev.
Sheri Ellwood officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight, with family
receiving visits from 6-8 p.m., all at Hays-Christians Funeral Home in
Lindsborg. Memorials are suggested to Bethany Home, in care of the funeral
home.

Wanda E. Hampton 1911-2001
LARNED - Wanda E. Hampton, 89, died Aug. 13 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 21, 1911, in
Sanford, the daughter of Joseph L. and Sarah Senoretta "Etta" Hoover
Gandolph. She married Clarence Hampton Aug. 13, 1927, in Lyons. He died in
1993. A resident of Larned, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Hampton was a member of Larned Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Daniel R. Hampton of Larned; one daughter,
Delores M. Gleason of Leesburg, Va.; seven grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by one son, David E. Hampton.
There will be no funeral, cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be at
Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery at a later date. There is no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, in care of Great
Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory in Great Bend.

Lois Bell Smith 1919-2001
ST. JOHN - Lois Bell Smith, 82, died Aug. 12 at Leisure Homestead in St.
John. She was born Jan. 28, 1919, in Stafford County, the daughter of
Arthur Louis and Maude Smith. She was a 1936 graduate of St. John High
School and a graduate of Venus Beauty School in Wichita. A resident of St.
John, she was a statistical clerk for 35 years for Texaco Company and also
worked at Edna Pitts Beauty Shop and St. John National Bank, all in St.
John.
She was a member of Church of Christ in St. John and later attended St.
James Episcopal Church. She was past matron and life member of Henry Rohr
Chapter of OES in St. John.
Survivors include one sister, Peggy White of St. John. She was preceded in
death by one brother, John Melvin Smith; and one sister, Clo Ellen Ahnert.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel in St. John.
Inurnment will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. There will be no
visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Fairview
Park cemetery or Hall Museum, both of St. John, both in care of the funeral
chapel.

Earl Ronald O'Connell 1936-2001
Earl Ronald O'Connell, 86, of Great Bend, died Aug. 12 at Central Kansas
Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 18, 1914,
in Great Bend, the son of William Albert and Hattie L. Neff O'Connell. He
married Dorothy R. Timken June 4, 1936, in Bison. A resident of Great Bend,
he was the owner/operator of the former O'Connell Motor Company and was
manager of B.F. Goodrich Tire Company, both in Great Bend.
O'Connell was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, Eagles
Lodge, American Legion, Golden Belt Country Club and past volunteer
fireman, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Kay Durheim of
Prairie Village and Janet Schremmer of Great Bend; one brother, Wilson
O'Connell of Boston, Mass.; one sister, Peggy Laster of Hutchinson; four
grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one
sister, Nina May O'Connell.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Bill
Wolf officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call
until 9 tonight at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend and from
9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials are
suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Aug. 14, 2001

Ralph E. Kuhn 1923-2001
VICTORIA - Ralph E. Kuhn, 77, died Aug. 12 at St. Francis Hospital and
Medical Center in Topeka. He was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Victoria, the son
of August and Helen Dreiling Kuhn. He married Luella F. "Dolly" Wellbrock
Sept. 27, 1943, in Victoria. She died Aug. 12, 1999. A lifelong resident of
Victoria, he worked for Esfeldt Oil Field Construction Company, Victoria
Lumber Company, Dreiling Oil and Cross Manufacturing, before retiring in
1986.
Kuhn was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus,
both of Victoria.
Survivors include one son, Raymond E. Kuhn of Russell; one daughter, Eileen
Schmidt of Topeka; five brothers, Elmer Kuhn and Louis Kuhn, both of Hays,
Frank Kuhn of Victoria, James Kuhn of Topeka and Clifford Kuhn of Oklahoma;
five sisters, Leona Wellbrock of Victoria, Alice Haselhorst of Denver,
Colo., Merline Wellbrock of Great Bend, Ellen Dickerson of Oklahoma and
Norma Wellbrock of Hays; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one daughter, Geraldine Kuhn; one brother, Albert Kuhn; and one sister,
Dolorosa Berens.
Vigil service will be at 7 tonight followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary
at 7:30, both at Cline's Mortuary in Victoria. Funeral will be at 9 a.m.
Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Maris Goetz officiating. Burial will
be at St. Fidelis cemetery in Victoria. Friends may call until 9 tonight
and from 8-8:45 a.m. Wednesday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are
suggested to the Cathedral of the Plains Charitable Fund and Masses, in
care of the mortuary.
