Leonard E. Maneth Sr. 1924-2002
OLMITZ - Leonard E. Maneth Sr., 77, died Feb. 9 at his residence. He was born Oct. 7, 1924, on the family farm west of Olmitz, the son of Charles and Augusta Zimmer Maneth. He married Marcella Riedel on Sept. 29, 1948, at Olmitz. A lifelong resident of Olmitz, he was a farmer and stockman. Maneth was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus, 2100 Club Council, all of Olmitz, and past board member of Mid-State Co-op of Otis. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Leonard E. Maneth Jr., Edward C. Maneth and David W. Maneth, all of Olmitz; three daughters, Diana Wilson of Kansas City, Mo., Jolene Dozier of Independence and Mary Harbert of Kingman; one sister, Theresa Butterfield of Fresno, Calif.; 25 grandchildren; and five great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by 10 brothers, Fred Maneth, William Maneth, Joseph Maneth, Carl Maneth, Tony Maneth, Henry Maneth, Frank Maneth, Edward Maneth, Leo Maneth and Fritz Maneth; and three sisters, Anna Hawk, Clara Nehring and infant sister Mildred Maneth. Family rosary will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the church, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann cemetery in Olmitz. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family School Endowment of Great Bend or Masses, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 10, 2002

Kenneth R. Barnett Sr. 1945-2002
JETMORE - Kenneth R. Barnett Sr., 57, died Feb. 9 at the Hodgeman County Health Center in Jetmore. He was born Jan. 27, 1945, at Pocahontas, Ark., the son of Cecil "Jack" and Agness Scott Barnett. He married Bernice Walker, June 30, 1965, at Healy. A resident of Jetmore, he was an equipment operator 2 for Kansas Department of Transportation. Barnett was a member of First Baptist Church of Jetmore and a deacon of the church. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Kenneth Barnett Jr. of Jetmore; three daughters, Kristi Moore and Kim Neeley, both of Jetmore, and Jamie Cantrell of Kinsley; five brothers, Jerel Barnett and Billie Barnett, both of Healy, Paul Barnett and MacAthur Barnett, both of Dighton, and Craig Barnett of Quinter; two sisters, Bonnie Donnecker of Healy and Hassel Conley of Bonaire, Ga.; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Barnett; one sister, Kathleen Doris; and one grandson, Cody. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Mark Durham officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount cemetery in Jetmore. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, Monday and Tuesday, all at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Amelia 'Millie' Scheideman 1914-2002
LA CROSSE - Amelia "Millie" Scheideman, 87, died Feb. 10 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. She was born May 28, 1914, in La Crosse, the daughter of Henry and Eva Reiger Brening. She married Elmer M. Scheideman Aug. 12, 1933, in La Crosse. He died Nov. 19, 1988. A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Scheideman was a member of United Methodist Church in La Crosse. Survivors include two sons, Ray Scheideman of Great Bend and Robert J. Scheideman of Ellinwood; two daughters, Mary Ann Pechanec of La Crosse and Katheryn Schlegel of Springfield, Mo.; one sister, Hannah Koerting of Keystone, Neb.; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Wesley Brening; and two grandchildren, Robin Scheideman and Brenda Mason. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Janousek Funeral Home Chapel in La Crosse, with the Revs. Kathy Bannister and Marilyn Christmore officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 11, 2002

Richard P. Nixon 1922-2002
HAYS - Richard P. Nixon, 79, died Feb. 9 at Hays Good Samaritan Center in Hays. He was born Oct. 28, 1922, in Cleveland, Okla., the son of Luther P. and Vera L. Hoaig Nixon. He was a 1940 graduate of Claussen High School and a 1951 graduate of Oklahoma City University. He married Theresa Ferguson Feb. 12, 1944, in Oklahoma City, Okla. A resident of Hays, coming from Russell, he worked for Jones, Shelburne and Farmer of Oklahoma City until he started his business, R.P. Nixon Operations in Russell and later in Hays. Nixon was a member of Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Russell, American Legion of Hays, American Association of Petroleum Geologist and Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientist. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Paul Nixon of Gorham, Dan Nixon and Brian Nixon, both of Hays; one daughter, Karen 'Jesse' Gilliland of Montrose, Colo.; one brother, Robert L. Nixon of Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one infant son, John Luther Nixon. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cline's Mortuary in Hays, with the Rev. Bill Miller officiating. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Hays Medical Center or Russell Shrine Club, both in care of the mortuary. Feb. 11, 2002

Gerald E. Williams 1926-2002
Gerald E. Williams, 75, of Great Bend, died Feb. 10 at his home. He was born Oct. 27, 1926, in Eureka, the son of Albert Ray and Emma Koestel Williams. He married Annabell Ann Dennis Oct. 26, 1952, in Stafford. A resident of Great Bend, he was a retired warehouse manager and trucker for Magcobar Division of Dresser Industries. Williams was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, G. Douglas Williams of Pratt; one daughter, Emma Lou Schnelle of Medicine Lodge; one sister, Iona OiQuinn of Merrill, Ore.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry R. Williams. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Bobby Franklin officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Partridge cemetery in Partridge. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 11, 2002

Russell Merle Ewing 1917-2002
LARNED - Russell Merle Ewing, 84, died Feb. 9 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. He was born July 31, 1917, in Great Bend, the son of Fred and Lucy J. Gilmore Ewing. A longtime resident of Larned, he was a retired cafeteria employee for Larned State Hospital. Ewing was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include one nephew, James Ewing of Wiley, Colo.; and four nieces, Elloise McVicker of Lisco, Neb., Dolores Leake of Ft. Worth, Texas, Pam Wehlan of Burke, Va., and Sherry Clue of Duluth, Ga. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Eldon Ewing, Lionel Ewing and Lowell Ewing; and two sisters, Ilene Ewing and Oleta Knight. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned, with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Welcome Inn Seniors, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 11, 2002

Estella M. Frank 1912-2002
Estella M. Frank, 90, of Great Bend, died Feb. 8 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. She was born Feb. 5, 1912, in Council Grove, the daughter of Homer and Ethel Gaston Clabaugh. She was a 1930 graduate of La Crosse Rural High School and received her teaching degree from Fort Hays University. She married Waldo Frank Dec. 25, 1933, in Chanute. He died March 14, 1987. A lifelong resident of the Central Kansas area, she was a retired school teacher. Mrs. Frank was a member of EUB Church and National Republican Committee. Survivors include one nephew; and one niece, Patsy Anderson of Arizona. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth Jean Frank; one brother, Robert Nelson Clabaugh; and one sister, Mildred E. Hanhardt. Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at La Crosse City Cemetery, with the Rev. Maurice Schaus officiating. Friends may call from noon to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or the donoris choice, both in care of the funeral home. Ethel Alma Phillips Pfeifer 1908-2002
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Ethel Alma Phillips Pfeifer, 94, died Feb. 9 at Christian Health Care Nursing Home in Springfield, from complications following a heart condition. She was born May 24, 1908, in Spivey. She married Paul Pfeifer. He preceded her in death. A longtime resident of Great Bend until 1997, when she relocated to Springfield, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Dr. Norman I. Pfeifer of Springfield; and three grandsons. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cleveland Cemetery, north of Spivey on K-14. There is no visitation listed. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, in care of Greenlawn Funeral Home South in Springfield. Feb. 11, 2002

Winslow Hubka 1914-2002
WILSON - Winslow Hubka, 87, died Feb. 9. He was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Wilson. He married Frances Hubka. She died May 22, 2000. A resident of Wilson, he was a farmer, stockman and janitor. Survivors include one son, Ron Hubka of Wilson; one stepson, Vance Stinnett of Salina; one daughter, Diane Hubka of Salina; and five grandchildren. Funeral was at 10 a.m. today at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. Burial was at St. Wenceslaus cemetery in Wilson. Memorials are suggested to the church or Wilson Senior Center, both in care of Foster Mortuary in Wilson. Feb. 11, 2002

Ethan Gentry Riley-Keener 2002-2002
PAWNEE ROCK - Ethan Gentry Riley-Keener, one day, died at birth Feb. 9 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 9, 2002, the son of John Keener and Tiffany Riley, both of Pawnee Rock. Survivors include his parents of Pawnee Rock; his grandparents, Dalton and Barbara Keener of Pawnee Rock, Trish Keener of Hays, Tammy Riley of Macksville, and Jim and Nancy Riley of Belpre; and his great-grandparents, Jane Rutledge and LeRoy Erickson, both of Larned, and Rowena Keener of Great Bend. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pawnee Rock cemetery in Pawnee Rock, with the Rev. Mike Irvin officiating. Friends may sign a register book until 8 tonight at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 11, 2002

Clyde Sharon Root 1915-2002
Clyde Sharon Root, 86, of Great Bend, died Feb. 10 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 29, 1915, in McWillie, Okla., the son of William and Ethel Booze Root. He married Alfreda Stejskal in Great Bend. She died in 1975. He married Maytha Kay Vistuba May 29, 1976. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he worked as a feed mill operator for Garvey Elevators. Root was a member of First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, American Legion Post 180 and Fraternal Order of Eagles, all of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two stepsons, Donald Vistuba of Gorham and Bill Stejskal; two stepdaughters, Colleen Hall of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Edra Stejskal; three brothers, David Root of Dallas Center, Iowa, Wilbur Root and Marion Root, both of Great Bend; three sisters, Olive Haldeman of Dallas Center, Eva Mae Skinner and Rosalie Cross, both of Gordonville, Texas; five step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, David Wayne Root; one stepson, Jim Vistuba; one sister, Emma Hartness; and one step-grandson. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, all at the funeral home. Kathryn M. Wilkoff 1917-2002
ST. JOHN - Kathryn M. Wilkoff, 84, died Feb. 10 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. She was born July 30, 1917, in Stafford, the daughter of Otis Berlin and Margaret Zenor. She was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and a graduate of the University of Kansas. She married William T. Wilkoff Dec. 29, 1946, in Hutchinson. He died April 6, 2001. A resident of St. John, she worked as a math teacher, retiring in 1978. Mrs. Wilkoff was a member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, both of St. John. Survivors include one son, Mark O. Wilkoff of Alexandria, Va.; one daughter, Kathryn A. Tanner of St. John; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by one sister, Polly Todd. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Minnis Chapel in St. John, with the Rev. W. Harlan Rittgers officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel.

Kenneth E. Poncin 1935-2002
HUTCHINSON - Kenneth E. Poncin, 66, died Feb. 11 at his home in Hutchinson. He was born Nov. 13, 1935, near Raymond, the son of Joseph Bernard and Kathryn Peter Poncin. He married Georgie Mathes March 2, 1954, in Littleton, Colo. A resident of Hutchinson for the past five years, coming from Sterling and Golden Valley, N.D., he was a truck driver, retiring in 1999. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Don Poncin of Lebanon, Mo., and Larry Poncin of Wichita; one daughter, Sherry Nolte of El Reno, Okla.; one brother, Bernie Poncin of Lyons; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Kimple Funeral Chapel in Ellinwood, with the Rev. Bill Elam officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, all at the funeral home. Donald L. Buster 1928-2002
McKINNEY, Texas - Donald L. Buster, 73, died Feb. 9 in McKinney. He was born April 15, 1928, in Manhattan, the son of Cecil J. and Hazel Mae Wilson Buster. He married Donna Joan Ryan May 17, 1953, in McCracken. A resident of McKinney, he worked as an attorney. Buster was a member of the Methodist church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Greg Buster of El Dorado and Larry Buster of Anchorage, Alaska; one daughter, Sally Buster of McKinney; one sister, Virginia Whiteside of Tulsa, Okla.; and five grandchildren. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in McCracken, with the Rev. Kathy Bannister officiating. Burial will be at McCracken City Cemetery.
