Edna I. Orebaugh 1918-2002
Edna I. Orebaugh, 84, of Great Bend, died May 11 at Integrated Health Services in Ellinwood. She was born Feb. 27, 1918 at Barton County, the daughter of Edward and Lena Kazimaier Jurgensen. She married Leo Orebaugh April 24, 1941, at Albert. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Orebaugh was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Albert, and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons Jerry D. Orebaugh of Ashland, and Randy L. Orebaugh of Great Bend; two daughters, Ulanda S. Stiebben of Pratt and Jolene R. Houseman of Great Bend; Three Brothers, Donald Jurgensen and Merle Jurgensen, both of Great Bend, and Edward Jurgensen of Wichita; one sister, Alverna Holoporiek of La Crosse; 12 grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Jurgensen, one infant brother; and two infant sisters. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Paul Clifton officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or American Diabetes Association both in care of the funeral home. May 12, 2002

Turner Hall Baker 1916-2002
BLACKWELL, Okla. - Turner Hall Baker, 86, died May 5. A resident of Blackwell, he was a retired master mechanic for Northern Natural Gas Company. Survivors include his wife, Sara C. Baker, of the home; eight daughters, Sondra L. Zinn and Eleanore Adolph, both of Great Bend, Linda Bozarth of Liberal, Nancy Brecheisen of Pine Bush, N.Y., Carolyn Baker, Cindy McLain, Deborah Patterson and Michelle Silvas, all of Blackwell; two brothers, Ralph Baker of Liberal and Rodney Baker of Silver City, N.M.; one sister, Mary Ellen Cook of Amarillo, Texas; 37 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Blackwell. Broadway Mortuary Inc., of Wichita is in charge of the arrangements. May 10, 2002

Lowell D. Scribner 1909-2002
EL DORADO - Lowell D. Scribner, 92, died May 7 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. He was born June 25, 1909, in Chelsea Township, the son of Glick and Esther Miller Scribner. He was a 1928 graduate of Rosalia High School. He attended El Dorado Junior College. He married Sadie Piper on Nov. 6, 1937, at Belle Plaine. She died Oct. 3, 1999. A lifetime resident of Butler County, he was a rancher and had been employed by T-Z Ranch since 1946. Scribner was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Patmos Masonic Lodge No. 97 AF & AM, Farm Bureau and Kansas Livestock Association. He also served on Chelsea School Board and Chelsea Township Board for many years. Survivors include one son, John Scribner of El Dorado; one daughter, Joanne Geil of New Cambria; one brother, Forrest "Bus" Scribner of El Dorado; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Scribner and Chester Scribner. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Blankenship cemetery near Rosalia. Memorials are suggested to the church or Rosalia-Chelsea Volunteer Fire Department, in care of Kirby-Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado. May 10, 2002

John Howard Nation 1914-2002
WINFIELD - John Howard Nation, 87, died May 8 at his residence in Winfield. He was born July 17, 1914, at Delaware, Okla., the son of William Reed and Addie Mae DeVan Nation. He was a 1932 graduate of Caney High School. He married Betty Wasson March 28, 1926, at Independence. A resident of Winfield since 1962, he worked for Republic Oil & Refining, Shell Oil and Cooperative Refining Association of Great Bend, and was the founder of Petroleum Enterprise Inc., retiring in 1986. Nation was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving at Clearfield Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield, Utah. He was a member of Winfield Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post No. 10, past director of Eastern Kansas Oil & Gas Association and served on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Robert J. Nation of Winfield; one daughter, Nancy Nation Heinz of Winfield; one brother, Charles Nation of Winfield; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Nation and Robert Nation. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Highland cemetery in Winfield. Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The family will receive friends from 7-8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to Habitat For Humanity, First United Methodist Church or American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home. May 10, 2002

Helen Louise Phillips 1922-2002
Helen Louise Phillips, 80, of Great Bend, died April 29 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 26, 1922, at White Deer, Texas, the daughter of Lee Roy and Julia Marian Wright Powers. She was a graduate of Parkland Hospital School of Nursing in Dallas, Texas. She married Dale V. Phillips on Sept. 6, 1945, at Longview, Texas. A resident of Great Bend since 1945, coming from White Deer, she was a registered nurse at CKMC for 13 years. Mrs. Phillips was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Sunday school teacher, RSVP, Red Cross volunteer, Meals on Wheels volunteer, Cub Scout den-mother and Brownie Scout leader, all of Great Bend. She was an Army nurse serving in World War II as a second lieutenant. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Randall S. Phillips of Great Bend; one daughter and son-in-law, Renee L. and David E. Patterson Sr. of Great Bend; one brother, Gene R. Powers of Austin, Texas; one sister, Josephine Milikien of Port Aransas, Texas; two grandsons, Nicholas Kruse of Hays and Justin Kruse of Great Bend; three step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; five nephews; and seven nieces. She was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Lee Powers. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with Loren Dyke officiating. Her body was donated to science upon her request. Inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Sunflower Shrine Travel Fund, in care of the funeral home. May 9, 2002

Samuel 'Sam' Osborne 1935-2002
Samuel "Sam" Osborne, 66, of Great Bend, died May 7 at his residence. He was born Sept. 20, 1935, at Beaver City, Okla., the son of Louis and Bernice Davis Osborne. He married Sharon A. Navarro on Oct. 9, 1988, in Mexico. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School. A resident of Great Bend, he was a former teacher, former owner of Arthur Murray Dance Studios and the retired owner of Sam's Mexican Restaurant. Osborne was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jim Osborne of Columbus, Miss.; one stepson, Pete Vieyra of Wichita; two stepdaughters, Suzanne Vieyra of Hays and Debra Astle of St. John; one brother, Jim Osborne of Grove, Okla.; two grandchildren; and seven step grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Kevin Baxter officiating. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Samuel Lynn Osborne Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. May 9, 2002

Bessie R. Renner 1903-2002
LA CROSSE - Bessie R. Renner, 98, died May 7 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. She was born Sept. 12, 1903, at Bushton, the daughter of James and Grace Roelfs Rumley. She married Grover C. "Cleve" Smith in 1927, at La Crosse. He preceded her in death. She then married Frank O. Renner in 1949, at La Crosse. He died Dec. 13, 1984. A resident of La Crosse for more than 75 years, she was a retired treasurer for Rush County. Mrs. Renner was a member of United Methodist Church and Sixty Plus, both of La Crosse, and Eastern Star and Gay Gingham Club, both of Rush Center. Survivors include two sons, Duane G. Smith of Palestine, Texas, and Grover D. Smith of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her step-father, John W. Dolson; one brother, Cecil Rumley; and one sister, Nina Beneke. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Kathy Bannister officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. May 9, 2002

Jason Lee Battaglear 1972-2002
Jason Lee Battaglear, 29, of Great Bend, died May 6 in Meade County. He was born Dec. 29, 1972, at Wichita, the son of Jerry Battaglear and Dona M. Fowler Bender. He married Heather A. Orth Oct. 23, 1998, at Garden City. A resident of Garden City for six years, coming from Great Bend, he was a tong operator for Francis Casing Crews in Great Bend and Garden City. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Jason Lee Battaglear Jr. and Danyan Michael Battaglear, both of Great Bend; his father, of Wichita; his mother and step father, Larry L. Bender of Russell; one brother, Eric Battaglear of Hoisington; his grandmothers, Juanita Battaglear of Wichita and Lyla Fowler of Marion. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Battaglear Children Educational Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. May 9, 2002

Ila Mae Dodson 1925-2002
NATOMA - Ila Mae Dodson, 77, died May 7 at Cherry Village in Great Bend. She was born March 15, 1925, at Natoma, the daughter of Albert and Wilda Pruter Schloh. She was a graduate of Natoma High School. She married Charles E. Dodson July 24, 1946, at Russell. He died July 3, 1972. A longtime resident of the Natoma community, coming from Bazine and Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Ronald Dodson of Hays; one daughter, Linda Haberman of Great Bend; one sister, Norene Thornton of Osborne; five grandchildren; four step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Natoma Methodist Church. Burial will be at Mt. Herman cemetery in Paradise. Friends may call until 9 p.m. tonight at Pohlman's Mortuary in Natoma and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home. May 9, 2002

Martha Ann Van Gundy 1926-2002
SALINA - Martha Ann Van Gundy, 75, died May 7. She was born Sept. 3, 1926, at Great Bend, the daughter of Arthur S. and Ellen Gibson. She was a 1948 graduate of the University of Kansas. She married Richard G. Van Gundy on Aug. 29, 1948, at Great Bend. A resident of Salina, coming from Ellsworth, Pratt and Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Van Gundy was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, AAUW, ACBL, and hospital auxiliary. Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Sue Kruger of Austin, Texas, and Diane Van Gundy of Mansfield, Texas; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Steven Van Gundy, in 1950, and one brother, Carl Gibson. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Salina. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call until 8 p.m. tonight at Ryan Mortuary in Salina. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. May 9, 2002

Doris M. Wheeler 1930-2002
Doris M. Wheeler, 72, of Great Bend, died May 6 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was born March 30, 1930, in Los Angeles County, Calif., the daughter of Lee Everett and Ethel Irene Marsee Guyett. She married Robert L. Wheeler March 13, 1948 in Los Angeles County. He died Oct. 7, 1988. A resident of Great Bend for more than 50 years, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Wheeler was a member of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include one son, Robert M. Wheeler of Idaho; two daughters, Roberta M. Goodwin of Hutchinson and Jackie J. Hughey of Lakewood, Colo.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Leora I. Lea; one brother, William Guyett; and one grandson, Larry E. Goodwin II. Graveside service will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend with the Rev. Thomas Swain officiating. Friends may call from 5 -8 p.m. tonight at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice of Great Bend, in care of the funeral home. May 8, 2002

Lucille Mae Galyardt Kasselman 1923-2002
LARNED - Lucille Mae Galyardt Kasselman, 78, died May 7 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Ellinwood, the daughter of Alex and Elizabeth Stroh Galyardt. She married Orville H. Kasselman May 5, 1945, at Newton. He died May 12, 1972. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Kasselman attended United Methodist Church in Ellinwood. Survivors include two sisters, Delores Arnold and Elanor Christianson, both of Ellinwood. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Kimple Funeral Chapel in Ellinwood, with the Rev. Larry Young officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1 -8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. May 8, 2002

M. Myrlene Brungardt 1940-2002
M. Myrlene Brungardt, 61, of Great Bend, died May 7 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Sept. 8, 1940, at Okmulgee, Okla., the daughter of Charles W. and Erple E. Weaver Castor. A resident of Great Bend for three years, coming from Russell, she worked in food service for USD 428 in Great Bend. She attended St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, and was a 4-H leader and board member of Ellis County Rainbow Girls of Natoma. Survivors include two daughters, Amanda Oxenford of Hays and Cindy Pottorff of Lawrence; her companion, Maurice Nordman of Great Bend; her parents of Okmulgee; one brother, Kevin Castor of Hutchinson; four sisters, Charlene Rathbun of Ellis, Sue Paget of Waldo, Judy Snow of Schulter, Okla., and Karren Critchfield of Burton; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, James Castor. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Great Bend Family Mortuary in Great Bend with the Rev. Joel Rathbun officiating. Inurnment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 8 a.m. until time of service Friday at the mortuary. No memorials are suggested. May 8, 2002
