Clara Scheuerman 1902-2002
LA CROSSE - Clara Scheuerman, 99, died July 6 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. Born Aug. 8, 1902, she was the daughter of John C. and Katie Steitz Scheuerman. She married George P. Scheuerman June 17, 1920, at Otis. He died March 8, 1972. A lifetime resident of the Bison area, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Scheuerman was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Otis, Joy Club of Bison and Evangelical Lutheran Church Women of Otis. Survivors include two sons, Glenn Scheuerman of Bison and Gary Scheuerman of Garden City; one daughter, Elnora Steitz of Great Bend; one sister, Rachel Skidmore of Great Bend; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, William Scheuerman; two sisters, Hilda Tracy and Bertha Scheuerman; and one grandson, David Scheuerman. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Jeri Dexheimer officiating. Burial will be at Otis Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Central Rush County EMTs of La Crosse or donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home. Monday July 8, 2002

Muriel Ruth McGuire 1919-2002
PORTLAND, Ore. - Muriel Ruth McGuire, 83, died July 4 at her home in Portland. She was born Jan. 26, 1919, at Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Olin Lester and Era Arnita Redding Wright. She married Russell Virgil McGuire on June 19, 1938, at Centerville, Iowa. He died May 14, 1984. A resident of Ellinwood for 34 years, she was a homemaker and worked with her husband in the family business. Mrs. McGuire was member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ellinwood, a former member of Sweet Adelines, member of the garden club and Daughters of Isabella. Survivors include two sons, Micheal Stephen McGuire of Arlington, Texas, and Christopher Wright McGuire of Ellinwood; two daughters, Rebecca C. Torrans Green of Portland and Kelley Ann Marlow of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Rosary and prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Funeral will be 10 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Autumn Burial and Cremation in Portland is in charge of cremation. July 9, 2002

Leo Christoph 1912-2002
LENEXA - Leo Christoph, 89, died July 3 at his residence. He was born July 29, 1912, at Ellinwood, the son of John and Agnes Danler Christoph. He married Dorothy Hickel in 1938. A resident of Lenexa since 1950, he worked as a railway mail clerk for 36 years until his retirement in 1976. Christoph was a 50-year member of Knights of Columbus Council 2332 of Shawnee, a member of the Legion of Mary, National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1162 and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Overland Park. He was also a lifetime member of Ellinwood Historical Society and a member of American Postal Workers Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Tom Christoph of Shawnee Mission and Jim Christoph of Kansas City; two daughters, Mary Christoph-Lees of Topeka and Sister Joel Christoph OP of Great Bend; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four siblings. Funeral service was held July 6 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa. Memorials are suggested to Benedictine College or Kansas City Hospice, both in care of Amos Family Chapel of Lenexa. July 9, 2002

Dona Faye Smith 1927-2002
ST. JOHN - Dona Faye Smith, 74, died July 7 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Sept. 16, 1927, at Stafford County, the daughter of Chester Roosevelt and Pansy Iona Leatherman. She was a graduate of Antrim High School. She married Donald D. Smith on Feb. 19, 1946, at Lyons. A lifetime resident of St. John, she was a homemaker, school bus driver and farmer. Mrs. Smith was a member of Eden Valley Church of the Brethren, Martha Rebekah Lodge, Extension Homemakers Unit and Mothers Club, all of St. John. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Randy D. Smith of Dodge City; one daughter, Kathie Howell of Hutchinson; four sisters, Betty Barker of Pratt, Bernice Shrum of Hutchinson, Joyce Rowley of Dodge City and Connie Mawhirter of St. John; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Darlene Bowden and Berneda Magie. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Revs. Matthew Spurgin and David Albright officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 1-8 tonight at Minnis Chapel in St. John. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the chapel. July 9, 2002

Virgil A. 'Curly' Jacobs 1933-2002
LA CROSSE - Virgil A. "Curly" Jacobs, 69, died July 4 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 12, 1933, at Cordia, the son of Adam and Augustina Wasinger Jacobs Jr. He was a 1952 graduate of La Crosse High School. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a farmer. Jacobs was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of La Crosse. Survivors include one brother, Anthony Jacobs of Godfrey, Ill.; and one sister, Sharon Swann of Oklahoma City, Okla. He was preceded in death by six brothers, LeRoy Jacobs, Donald Jacobs, Darald Jacobs, Romeo Jacobs, Larry Jacobs and Wilfred Jacobs. Funeral service was this morning at the church with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial was at La Crosse Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. July 9, 2002

Gary Harris 1942-2002
STAFFORD - Gary Harris, 59, died July 8 at Stafford District Hospital. He was born Sept. 20, 1942, at Great Bend, the son of Warren and Wilma Lovette Harris. He married Vicky Sims on June 17, 1964, at Hutchinson. A longtime resident of Stafford, he worked in the parts department of Allis Chalmers in Stafford. Harris was a member of Larned Methodist Church and National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Cary Whitlock of Clearwater, Larry Harris of Dodge City and James J. Harris of Stafford; his mother of Hutchinson; one brother, Keith Harris of Shawnee Mission; one sister, Marsha Hicklin of Hutchinson; and six grandchildren. Graveside memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Stafford cemetery with Darrel Murphy officiating. Memorials are suggested to Stafford Youth Wrestling Club, in care of Minnis Chapel of Stafford. July 10, 2002

Helen Davis 1910-2002
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Helen Davis, 91, died July 6 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. She was born Oct. 10, 1910, at McCracken, the daughter of Lester Adrian Sr. and Eva C. Campbell Davis. She was a graduate of La Crosse High School and University of Kansas in Lawrence where she completed her undergraduate and graduate studies. A longtime resident of Kansas City, she was an office administrator in the automotive industry. Survivors include two brothers, Paul H. Davis of Midland, Texas, and Lester A. Davis of Phoenix, Ariz. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Ellen Davis. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Janousek Funeral Home Chapel in La Crosse with the Rev. Kathy Bannister officiating. Burial will be at McCracken City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Rush County Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home. July 10, 2002

Elmer 'Jiggs' W. Crowley 1908-2002
DIGHTON - Elmer "Jiggs" W. Crowley, 93, died July 8 at Lane County Long Term Care Unit in Dighton. He was born Aug. 11, 1908, at Vibbard, Mo., the son of John Christopher and Martha Ann O'Donnell Crowley. He was a graduate of Dighton High School. He married Pauline Faye Lofland Dec. 7, 1945, at St. John. A resident of Dighton, he was a retired mason. Crowley was a member of Fraternal Order of the Eagles 646, American Legion Post 190, Veteran of Foreign War Post 7773. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of U.S. Army Reserves, retiring in 1968 as a master sergeant. Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, Ellsworth Crowley of Amarillo, Texas, W. Leon Crowley of Mobridge, S.D., and Gary Crowley and Kim Crowley, both of Dighton; one daughter, Doris Lee Iarossi of Topeka; one sister, Esther Grady of Armand Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Clarence Crowley, Earl Crowley, Hubert Crowley, Lester Crowley and Forest Crowley; and three sisters, Lena Smith, Goldie Crowley and Lucy Katherine Doris. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Dighton with the Rev. Ben Friesen officiating. Burial will be at Dighton Memorial cemetery with American Legion Post 190 military rites. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Boomer Funeral Home in Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the Elmer W. Crowley Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home. July 10, 2002

Charley R. Foreman 1911-2002
HANSTON - Charley R. Foreman, 90, died July 11 at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. He was born Aug. 14, 1911, at Eugene, Ore., the son of Fred and Nona Salmans Foreman. He married Bonnie McMillen May 15, 1971 at Kinsley. She died Sept. 26, 1996. A lifetime resident of the Hanston area, he was a farmer. Foreman was a member of United Methodist Church and a 50 year member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Hanston. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include one stepdaughter, Judi Harris of Independence; and two stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Foreman; and one sister, Myrle Wade. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Mark Durham officiating. Burial will be at Hanston Cemetery, with military graveside rites. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, all at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to VFW of Hanston, in care of the funeral home. July 12, 2002

Dessie Myrtle Robertson 1924-2002
LARNED - Dessie Myrtle Robertson, 77, died July 10 at St. Catherine's Hospital in Garden City. She was born July 30, 1924, at Ash Valley, the daughter of Porter and Myrtle Smiley. She married Charles "Hank" Jr. Robertson May 18, 1945, at Larned. A resident of Larned sine 1960, coming from Garden City, she was a bookkeeper. Mrs. Robertson was a member of United Methodist Church of Larned. She was a volunteer at the Senior Center, St. Catherine's Hospital and Garden City Community College, all in Garden City. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Dewees King of Garden City; two sisters, Ada Ebersole of Wichita and Olive Johnson of Larned; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, John Theodore "Ted" Robertson; and four brothers, Orlie R. Smiley, Clair Smiley, Guy Smiley and Gerald Smiley. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Senior Center in Garden City, in care of the mortuary. July 12, 2002

Marvin M. 'Bill' Woodward 1911-2002
SEWARD - Marvin M. "Bill" Woodward, 91, died July 9 at his residence in Seward. He was born Feb. 20, 1911, at Leavenworth, the son of John and Lydia Woodward. He married Mary Louise Jaedicke May 25, 1933, at Leavenworth. She died Feb. 20, 1996. A longtime resident of Seward, coming from Leavenworth, he was a machinist and owner of Woodward Machine Shop at Seward. Woodward was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Gilbert Woodward, Glen Woodward, Melvin Woodward and Ray Woodward; and two sisters, Evelyn Bleistein and Neoma Gleason. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with the Rev. Rick Stanley officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 4-8 tonight at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to Seward Fire Department, in care of the chapel. July 12, 2002

Rev. William C. Bessmer 1912-2002
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Rev. William C. Bessmer, 90, died July 10 at Lee's Summit Hospital. He was born June 19, 1912, in Platte County, Missouri. He was a graduate of William Chrisman High School, Eden Seminary of Webster Groves, Mo., and Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. He married Evelyn. She died in 1999. A resident of Platte County, Mo., since 1982, he was a reverend in full standing, Western Association, Missouri Mid-South Conference, and United Church of Christ. The Rev. Bessmer was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ and the Kiwanis Club in Independence. He served in several congregations in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Kansas. Survivors include one son, Reginald K. Bessmer of Rockville, Md.; one daughter, Karen B. Wayland of Dallas, Texas; and three grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke's Education Endowment Fund, in care of the church. Arrangements are being handled by D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel of Independence. July 12, 2002

Katherine V. Saindon 1919-2002
PLAINVILLE - Katherine V. Saindon, 82, died July 11 at Plainville Rural Hospital. She was born Nov. 26, 1919, at Damar, the daughter of Hector and Delia Plomondon Desmarteau. She married Lawrence W. Saindon on Nov. 16, 1937, at Zurich. He died June 28, 1997. A resident of Plainville, coming from Zurich, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Saindon was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Zurich and St. Ann's Sodality. Survivors include three sons, LeRoy Saindon of Great Bend, Robert Saindon of Tescott and Melvin Saindon of Zurich; three daughters, Virginia Hull of El Dorado, Bonita Shubert and Susan Maddox, both of Plainville; one brother, Delmar Desmarteau of Great Bend; two sisters, Genevive Patterson-Till of Bellevue, Iowa, and Juanita Sheffler of Hutchinson; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Desmarteau; and three sisters, Celina Jurgenson, Florence Senesac and Bona Levingston. Parish vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel in Plainville, followed by a St. Ann's Sodality rosary. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Joseph Popelka officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann's Catholic Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, all at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel. July 12, 2002
