Marie T. Schremmer 1917-2002
BEAVER - Marie T. Schremmer, 84, died Aug. 24 at Russell Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 11, 1917 at Olmitz, the daughter of Gus and Lucy Maneth Hlavaty. She married John A. Schremmer, Oct. 19, 1936 at Olmitz. A resident of Beaver, coming from Hoisington and Olmitz, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Schremmer was a member of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington, and past president and member of St. Joseph Altar Society in Beaver. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons Gaylan Schremmer of Wichita, and Stan Schremmer of Gorham; two daughters, Connie K. Pickert of Kansas City, Mo., and Jeanette Smith of Richmond, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Hlavaty; three sisters, Velma Schugart, Anna Schugart, and Augusta Lichter; and one grandson, John Michael Pickert. Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Hoisington, with the Revs. Bob Schremmer and Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the St. Joseph cemetery or Russell Regional Hospital, both in care of the funeral home. Aug. 25, 2002

Grace Elizabeth Merten Weaver 1908-2002
MANHATTAN - Grace Elizabeth Merten Weaver, 93, died Aug. 19 at her residence in Manhattan. She was born Sept. 8, 1908, at Albert, the daughter of Albert N. and Ida Coss Merten. She was a graduate of Great Bend High School and the College of Emporia, with an A.B. and bachelor of music degrees and a certificate in public school music. She married David "Dave" J. Weaver on Sept. 20, 1940, at Hutchinson. He died Sept. 27, 1997. A resident of Hutchinson, she taught music, French and Latin at Syracuse. Mrs. Weaver was a member of United Methodist Church of Great Bend, First Presbyterian Church in Junction City, where she sang in the choir, and attended the American Association of University Women and Ladies Reading Club. She also volunteered at the Geary County Historical Society. Survivors include one son, David Weaver of Manhattan; one daughter, Jerri Campbell of Golden, Colo.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Bessie Merten, Elsie Pascoe and Maisie Schroeder. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Great Bend cemetery with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. Memorials are suggested to Geary County Historical Society, in care of Johnson Funeral Chapel in Junction City. Aug. 23, 2002

Orville K. Warner 1918-2002
HAYS - Orville K. Warner, 83, died Aug. 20 at Hays Medical Center. He was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Barton County, the son of Howard R. and Pearl U. Davis Warner. He was a 1937 graduate of Great Bend High School. He married Thelma I. Hawkins Doan on Jan. 1, 1947, at Great Bend. She died Dec. 26, 1995. A resident of Hays, he was employed by Dari-maid dairy and then the United States Postal Service from 1950 until his retirement in 1976. Warner was a member of High Plains Baptist Church in Hays, National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1709, a lifetime member of Morrison-McFadden Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and lifetime member of American Legion Post 180. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, during the European Theater of Operations as a forward observer for section 81 mortars, Company H, 137th Infantry, 35th division. Survivors include two sons, Robert K. Warner of Ontario, Calif., and C.W. "Bill" Doan of Houston; six daughters, Mary Bowsky of Lafayette, Colo., Cynthia Harbaugh of Topeka, Alice Amerine and Darlene Queen, both of Great Bend, and Beverly Campbell and Kathy Burgardt, both of Hays; two sisters, Verla L. Jilg of Great Bend and Hazel L. Jilg of El Dorado; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Elizabeth Ann Warner; and one sister, Lela A. Robinson. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Ben Lowery officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Golden Belt Memorial Park Cemetery, north of Great Bend, with military honors. Friends may call from 4-8 tonight at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays. Memorials are suggested to High Plains Christian School, in care of the funeral home. Aug. 23, 2002

Coleen V. Gates 1934-2002
OTTAWA - Coleen V. Gates, 67, died Aug. 20 at her home in Ottawa. She was born Dec. 29, 1934, at Falls City, Neb., the daughter of Herman and Amanda (Hartman) Zimmerman. She graduated in 1952 from Falls City High School and attended Brown Mackie Business College in Salina. She moved to Ottawa in 1971, coming from Morrill, Glasco, Russell and Ponca City, Okla. She was employed by Stouse Sign and Decal Company in Gardner in 1994 and a former employee with Franklin County Clerk's Office and Parmlee Industries. She is survived by two sons, Rick Gates of Russell and Mark Gates of Great Bend; one brother, Willard Zimmerman of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Ottawa. Graveside inurnment will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Steele cemetery in Falls City. Memorials may be made to the Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home. Aug. 23, 2002

Elmer J. Leiker 1926-2002
Elmer J. Leiker, 75, of Great Bend, died Aug. 19 at his residence. He was born Sept. 10, 1926, at Victoria, the son of Pius and Anna Sander Leiker. He married Ada M. Keplinger on Oct. 24, 1953, at Victoria. A resident of Great Bend since 1965, coming from Ness City, he was a farmer, operator for Schleumberger Well Service Co., and was employed by USD 428. Leiker was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Dorothy Quade of Great Bend and Connie Downing of Flower Mound, Texas; four brothers, Gilbert Leiker of Hays, Robert Leiker of Victoria, Neon Leiker of Independence and Laurian Leiker of Ellis; seven sisters, LuElla Dreiling, Theresa Haselhorst and Ethel Gatschet, all of Hays, Armella Thompson of Russell, Aquina Rajewski of Vincent, Mary Ellen Schmidtberger of Hill City and Rosalie Wiesner of Punta Gordi, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Fidelis cemetery in Victoria. Friends may call from 4-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, Relay for Life or American Diabetes Association, all in care of the funeral home. Aug. 20, 2002

Cletus J. Schartz 1922-2002
Cletus J. Schartz, 80, died Aug. 18 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. He was born April 5, 1922, at Ellinwood, the son of Alphons and Caroline Auchstetter Schartz. He married Pauline Strobel on April 28, 1943, at Seward. A resident of Great Bend since 1984, coming from Kanopolis, he was a farmer, welder, electrician and former partner of MacClet Electric in Great Bend. Schartz was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Marilyn Schartz of Great Bend; two brothers, Warren Schartz of Ellinwood and Orville Schartz of Kingman; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Malvern Schartz and Arden Schartz. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at St. Francis Xavier cemetery in Seward. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend and from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home. Aug. 20, 2002

Harold E. Dewey 1921-2002
Harold E. Dewey, 80, died Aug. 18 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. He was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Stafford County, the son of Wilbert W. and Ella Josephine Sims Dewey. He married Flossie P. Burhenn on May 18, 1947, in Stafford County. A lifetime resident of the Great Bend area, he was a farmer, steel cutter for Oneil Tank Service and road maintainer for South Bend Township. Dewey was a lifetime member of Eagles Lodge. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II in the European Theatre. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jeffrey Dewey of Great Bend; five daughters, Carolyn Dewey of Larned, Vivian Watkins and Marlene Dewey, both of Great Bend, Janis Chase of Valley Center and Catherine Chase of Marquette; one brother, Wayne Dewey of Grand Junction, Colo.; four sisters, Venita Newlin of Wichita, Gladys Mueller of Ellinwood, and Marjorie Keller and Marie Rogers, both of Great Bend; three grandsons; two step grandsons; and one step great-grandson. He was preceded in death by two infant sons and one brother, Devon Dewey. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, in care of the funeral home. Phyllis Morgenstern 1930-2002
RUSSELL - Phyllis Morgenstern, 72, died Aug. 17 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born March 18, 1930, at Russell, the daughter of John Jr. and Amelia Herdt Dumler. She married John C. "Cal" Morgenstern on Feb. 13, 1949, at Russell. He died Oct. 20, 1979. A lifetime resident of the Russell community, she was a clerk at Bankers Department Store and Klema's grocery store. Mrs. Morgenstern was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Northwest Kansas Singles Club. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Morgenstern of Hendesonville, Tenn., and Randy Morgenstern of Lucas; one brother, Glenn Dumler of Russell; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Dumler; and one sister, Lillian Odum. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Henry Hartman officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until noon Tuesday, all at Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell, and from 1 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Wilson Nursing Center in Wilson or to the church, both in care of the mortuary. Aug. 19, 2002

Ruby Ellen Beamer 1919-2002
LARNED - Ruby Ellen Beamer, 83, died Aug. 17 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. She was born March 18, 1919, at Macksville, the daughter of Clarence S. and Mamie W. Johnson Walker. She married Thaine O. Beamer on March 12, 1939, at Macksville. He died July 24, 1993. A resident of Larned since 1939, coming from Macksville, she was a licensed mental health technician at Larned State Hospital. Mrs. Beamer was a member of Church of Christ, Order of the Eastern Star and past worthy matron of the White Cross Chapter, all of Larned. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Beamer of Derby and Larry Beamer of Wichita; two daughters, Carolyn Mead and Janice Fisher, both of Larned; two brothers, Eddie Walker of Macksville and Vernon Walker of Bella Vista, Ark.; one sister, Julia Mapel of Wichita; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Francis Walker, Harold Walker, Russell Walker, Johnny Walker and Wayne Walker; and one sister, Edna Chandler. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with Jimmie Keas officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the mortuary. Aug. 19, 2002

Alberta 'Bertie' Barbara Wassinger 1925-2002
Alberta "Bertie" Barbara Wassinger, 76, of Great Bend, died Aug. 16 at Plaza West Regional Health Care Center in Topeka. She was born Sept. 17, 1925, at McCracken, the daughter of Albert Sr. and Barbara Peters Ree. She married Lawrence "Larry" F. Wassinger on June 1, 1946, at McCracken. He died Feb. 4, 1998. A resident of Great Bend since 1969, coming from Ness City, she worked in the catalog department at J. C. Penney, as a clerk at K-Mart in Great Bend and was a former secretary for Dr. P. K. Weins in Ness City. Mrs. Wassinger was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, an honorary member of Girl Scouts and a scout leader. Survivors include one son, Laridean Wassinger of Topeka; one daughter, Barbara Luckett of Aurora, Colo.; one brother, Albert Ree Jr. of rural McCracken; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Altar Society rosary will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's cemetery in Ellis. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Girl Scouts of America, in care of the funeral home. Aug. 19, 2002

Kelly Rae Meyeres Petry 1971-2002
LAWRENCE - Kelly Rae Meyeres Petry, 31, died Aug. 17 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 18, 1971, at Great Bend, the daughter of James L. and Rose M. Huslig Meyeres. She was a 1989 graduate of Great Bend High School and a 1994 graduate of Kansas State University, with a business education and computer science degree. She married David Petry on July 11, 1998, at Great Bend. A resident of Lawrence since 1994, she was a business teacher at Lawrence High School until 1997 and a business teacher at Free State High School in Lawrence until 1999. Mrs. Petry was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a cheerleader sponsor at LHS and FSHS, sponsor for Business Professional of America and co-sponsor of the student council at FSHS. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Katelyn Anne Petry of the home; her mother of Great Bend; and her grandmother, Mary E. Huslig of Great Bend. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Funeral Mass will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery in Lawrence. Memorials are suggested to Kelly Petry Memorial Scholarship Fund to be used for her daughter's education, in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Aug. 19, 2002

Lucille M. Haynes 1928-2002
WICHITA - Lucille M. Haynes, 74, died Aug. 13. She was born Aug. 8, 1928, at Decatur County, Iowa, the daughter of Dillon and Jennie Manchester. She married Gene E. Haynes. He preceded her in death in 1990. A resident of Wichita, she was a homemaker, and retired State of Kansas SRS employee. Survivors include one son, Brian Haynes of Larned; three daughters, Dr. Debbie Haynes and Barbara Haynes both of Wichita, and Lori Morgan of Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Memorial service was held Aug. 16 at the Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Wichita. Memorials are suggested to Via Christi Foundation in care of Broadway Mortuary in Wichita. Aug. 18, 2002
