Marna May Staats 1915-2002
SYLVIA - Marna May Staats, 86, died Aug. 12 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Okla. She was born Oct. 10, 1915, near Great Bend, the daughter of Milton and Etta Hooton Mark. She was a 1933 graduate of Stafford High School. She married Walter Staats on Nov. 10, 1938, at Hutchinson. He died Oct. 27, 1996. A resident of Tulsa since 1995, coming from Sylvia, where she had resided for 57 years, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Staats was a member of United Methodist Church in Sylvia, United Methodist Women and Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a Sunday school teacher and served on various church boards. Survivors include one son, Pat Staats of Ulysses; one daughter, Glenice Dame of Tulsa; one brother, Milton Mark of Medford, Okla.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Allan Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Sylvia Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 tonight at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Heart Association, both in care of the chapel. Aug. 14, 2002

Winnifred 'Winnie' Mae Burbach 1894-2002
ENTERPRISE - Winnifred "Winnie" Mae Burbach, 107, died Aug. 10 at Enterprise Estate Nursing Center in Enterprise. She was born Dec. 23, 1894, at Quinter, the daughter of Breece and Viola Chamberlain VanScyoc. She attended Fort Hays State College in Hays. She married George Burbach on Nov. 29, 1916, at Collyer. He died in December 1972. A resident of Enterprise Estates for seven years, she was a homemaker and taught elementary school in Trego and Gove counties until her retirement. Mrs. Burbach was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include one son, Marvin "Imo" Burbach of Wichita; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Collyer cemetery with the Rev. Ed Jumper officiating. Morell Funeral Home of Larned is in charge of arrangements. Aug. 14, 2002

Keith Aaron McKinney 2002-2002
LARNED - Keith Aaron McKinney, infant, died Aug. 12 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was the son of Kenneth McKinney and Sandie E. Rouse. Survivors include his parents; and grandparents, Keith and Sandra Robinson of Larned and Carl and Marge McKinney of Lewis. Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Larned cemetery with the Rev. Jack Singer officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, all at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned. Aug. 14, 2002

Raleigh Bristor 1920-2002
DODGE CITY - Raleigh Bristor, 81, died Aug. 12 at Minneola District Hospital in Minneola. He was born Sept. 6, 1920, at Odell, Neb., the son of Albert and Maude Green Bristor. He married Elaine R. Upton in 1941 at Marysville. She died Jan. 6, 1989. A resident of Dodge City since 1965, coming from Great Bend and Nebraska, he was a corrosion technician for Natural Gas Pipeline Company in Great Bend for 39 years, and co-owner of Roth Jewelers of Dodge City from 1974-1988. Bristor was a member of First United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge, all of Dodge City. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include one son, Randy J. Bristor of Dodge City; three daughters, Leslie Martin of Moundridge, Evelyn Mead of Herndon, Va., and Brenda Schmidt; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six sisters. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City with Jeffrey S. Hiers officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery in Dodge City with military graveside rites by VFW Howard Gotschall Post 1714. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Minneola Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home. Aug. 13, 2002

Robin Gail Scheufele Flavin 1952-2002
HUTCHINSON - Robin Gail Scheufele Flavin, 50, died Aug. 9 at Good Samaritan Village in Hutchinson. She was born July 7, 1952, at Prairie Village, the daughter of Glen C. and Shirley M. O'Connor Scheufele. She was a 1970 graduate of Hall High School in Little Rock, Ark. A resident of Hutchinson, coming from St. Louis, Mo., she was a sales clerk for Dillards and Fashion Bar department stores. Mrs. Flavin was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist of Boston, Mass., and First Church of Christ Scientist of Clarkson Valley of Clarkson, Mo. Survivors include one son, James Matthew Flavin of St. Louis; two daughters, Amanda Flavin and Molly Flavin, both of St. Louis; and one sister, Lynne Bush of Sterling. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Samaritan Village Dining Room in Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Village, First Church of Christ Scientist in Hutchinson or ArtisTree in Hutchinson, all in care of Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Aug. 13, 2002

Mildred Lorene Bilbrey 1922-2002
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Mildred Lorene Bilbrey, 79, passed away Aug. 10 in Las Vegas. She was born Oct. 31, 1922, at Barnsdall, Okla., the daughter of Arvy U. and Opal E. Morelan. She married Fern R. Bilbrey on Nov. 2, 1941, at St. John and shared his life until his death on Aug. 19, 1982. A resident of Las Vegas, she was retired from Icer Addis Oil Operations/BARCO Supply in Great Bend and Wichita. Mrs. Bilbrey was a member of First Baptist Church. She was involved in Veterans of Foreign Wars affairs with Post 3111 of Great Bend and was Kansas State VFW Auxiliary President in 1986-1987. Survivors include two sons, Ken Bilbrey of Las Vegas and Gary Bilbrey of Russell; one daughter, Pat Loy of Las Vegas; one brother, Norman Morelan of Iuka; four sisters, Margaret Fuqua of Dodge City, Tanya Sultz of Wichita, Pam Tinker of Tulsa, Okla., and Anna Hately of Casper, Wyo.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorial graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairview cemetery in St. John. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to National VFW Home, in care of VFW Auxiliary in Great Bend. Arrangements were handled by Hites Funeral Home of Henderson, Nev. Aug. 13, 2002

Evelyn Thersia Schlegel 1931-2002
NESS CITY - Evelyn Thersia Schlegel, 70, died Aug. 9 at her residence in Ness City. She was born Aug. 19, 1931, northeast of Ness City, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Rabenseifener Langer. She married Walter Schlegel on May 26, 1953, at Ness City. He died Jan. 13, 1981. A lifetime resident of Ness County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Schlegel was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary Frank Stull Post 152 and Ness County Historical Society, all of Ness City. Survivors include one son, Doug Schlegel of Ness City; two daughters, Lynette Grumbein of Alexander and Bonnie Guevara of Garden City; one brother, Edwin Langer of Ness City; two sisters, Anna Weilert of Ness City and Helen Koestner of Hoisington; and eight grandsons. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard Langer, Adolph Langer and Alvin Langer; and one sister, Marie McDonald. Funeral service was today at the church with the Rev. Gregory LeBlanc officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery in Ness City. Memorials are suggested to Ness County Historical Society, in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City. Aug. 12, 2002

Donald J. Riedlinger 1937-2002
DODGE CITY - Donald J. Riedlinger, 65, died Aug. 8, at his residence in Dodge City. He was born April 5, 1937 at Ford County, the son of Joe and Helen Hornbug Riedlinger. He married Janice Stegmen April 28, 1962, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Offerle. A lifetime resident of Ford County, he worked for Prairie Builders and owned and operated Don's Excavating, he was also employed by USD 443 in Dodge City for the past 15 years before his retirement. Riedlinger was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City. He served as a weapons specialist in the United States Air Force. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Bill Riedlinger of Meade; two daughters, Lynnette Hatfield of Basechor, and Lori Titsworth of Great Bend; one brother, Larry Riedlinger of Wichita; two sisters, Evelyn McBee of Minneola, and Ida Coker of Dodge City; two grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Sacred Heart Church. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Ted Skalsky officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery with Military Rites by Howard Gotschall Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1714. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie or Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, both in care of Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City. Aug. 11, 2002

Steven B. Beason 1955-2002
TOPEKA - Steven B. Beason, 47, died Aug. 9, at Topeka hospice house. He was born June 1, 1955, at San Diego, Calif., the son of Steve Cass and Joan Mullen Beason. He was a graduate of Emporia State University with a B.S. in Physical Education and a Master's Degree in Political Science. He married Denise, June 25, 1983 at Emporia. A resident of Topeka, coming from California, he was a teacher and coach at Bushton, Whittier, Calif., San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Topeka. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Ashley D. Beason, and Laura B. Beason both of the home; his parents Steve Cass Beason of Manhattan, and Joan and Werner Sitz of Centerville, Va.; and three sisters, Stace Nunz of Mission Viejo, Calif., Candace Beason of LaCanda, Calif., and Paige Wesley of Maryland. Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Heritage Hall at the Expo Center. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the Beason Children's Education Fund in care of Education Credit Union, 2808 SW Arrowhead Rd., Topeka, KS. 66614. Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka are in charge of the funeral arrangements. Aug. 11, 2002

Shirley Ruth Piper 1925-2002
Shirley Ruth Piper, 77, of Great Bend, died Aug. 10 at her residence. She was born April 14, 1925 at Superior, Wis., the daughter of Ward and Amy Falk Young. She married Harold Piper, April 16, 1948. A resident of Great Bend since 1962, coming from Pratt, she was a Registered Nurse, and teacher of nursing at Central Kansas Medical Center and Barton County Community College. Piper was a member of King Methodist Church, 50 year member of Eastern Star, and American Red Cross volunteer, all of Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; four daughters, Ann Lawrence of Crosby, Texas, Katharine Piper of Topeka, Sally McGuire of Arlington, Texas, and Stephanie Jacobs of Great Bend; one brother, Dr. W.M. Young of Taylors Falls, MN; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Shawn Piper, and one brother Spencer Young. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Mary Ohlemeier officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Great Bend Public Library in care of the funeral home. Aug. 11, 2002

Francis H. Ramsey 1917-2002
Francis H. Ramsey, 84, of Great Bend, died Aug. 10 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. He was born Sept. 22, 1917 at Towanda, the son of Hiram Robert and Dilla Myrtle Mulvany Ramsey. He was a graduate of El Dorado High School. He married Jewel I. Hilliard on May 14, 1950 at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend, he was an oil field driller. Ramsey was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of Great Bend; one daughter, Debby Bilyew of Great Bend; one brother, Maurice E. Ramsey of Hutchinson; and two sisters, Allene Kraft, and Roberta Keil both of Galatia. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday, all at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Great Bend Humane Society or the church both in care of the funeral home. Aug. 11, 2002

Charles 'Charlie' Barrett 1926-2002
WICHITA - Charles "Charlie" Barrett, 76, died Aug. 7 at Wichita. He was born March 22, 1926, at Caney, the son of Donald Ray and Cornelia Harris Barrett. He married Carol Ann Doss on Dec. 7, 1948, at Copan, Okla. A resident of Wichita, he was a production supervisor for Terra Resources until his retirement. Barrett was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Kevin Doss Barrett of Shawnee and Douglas Eugene Barrett of Great Bend; three brothers, Bill Barrett of Caney, Rex Barrett of Coffeyville and Patrick Barrett of Tulsa, Okla.; three grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Rae Songer. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Senter-Smith Mortuary in Mulvane with the Rev. Tom Sheldon officiating. The body will be cremated. Friends may call from 2-8 tonight at the mortuary. The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home. Aug. 9, 2002

Sylvia G. Vopat 1916-2002
WILSON - Sylvia G. Vopat, 86, died Aug. 6 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. She was born March 22, 1916, in Ellsworth County, the daughter of Frank and Anna Hochman Svaty. She married George L. Vopat on May 10, 1939, at Wilson. He died in 1997. A lifetime resident of the Wilson area, she was a homemaker and teacher at Progress and Palacky Schools in Ellsworth County. Mrs. Vopat was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church in Wilson, Altar Society, Nocturnal Adoration Society and 50-year member of Sunrise Extension Homemakers Unit. She was also a member of Ellsworth and Wilson senior centers, where she served on the board of directors. Survivors include five sons, Robert Vopat and Danny Vopat, both of Topeka, Harry Vopat of Paola, Alan Vopat of Deer Trail, Colo., and Dr. Richard Vopat of Wilson; one daughter, Phyllis Dolezal of Kanopolis; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral service was today at the church with the Rev. Jerome Morgan officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Wilson Senior Center or the church, both in care of Foster Mortuary in Wilson. Aug. 9, 2002
