Elton B. 'Brownie' Brown 1910-2002
HOISINGTON - Elton B. "Brownie" Brown, 92, died Oct. 5 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hoisington. He was born April 12, 1910, at Viola, the son of Charles and Pearl Chamberlain Brown. He was a graduate of Viola High School and Pittsburg State University. He married Dorothy Farnsworth on March 2, 1935, at Independence, Mo. A longtime resident of Hoisington, he taught woodworking and coached track, basketball and football at Rose Hill, Cambridge, Valley Center, Andale and Hoisington. Brown was a member of First Christian Church in Clearwater. He was a member of the 1934 U.S. track team which competed in Europe. He was selected to the Pittsburg track Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Michael Brown of Great Bend; three daughters, Linnea Winter of Great Bend, Loretta Thornbrugh of Plano, Texas, and Martha Brown of Kansas City; one sister, Helen Joy of Wichita; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Benny Brown; two brothers, Ora Brown and Earl Brown; and one sister, Pauline Kendall. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home of Hoisington with the Rev. Paula Bell officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-9 tonight, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 7, 2002

Helen A. Kratky 1904-2002
WILSON - Helen A. Kratky, 97, died Oct. 4 at Wilson Nursing Center in Wilson. She was born Oct. 10, 1904, in Lincoln County, the daughter of William A. and Agnes Jarus Kratky. A lifetime resident of Wilson, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and St. Wenceslaus Altar Society, both of Wilson, and Nocturnal Adoration Society. Survivors include one brother, Joseph Kratky of Wilson; and two sisters, Mary Soukup and Theresa E. Kasper, both of Wilson. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alois Kratky and Paul Kratky; and one sister, Frances Kroboth. Funeral service was today at the church in Wilson with the Rev. Jerome Morgan officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery. Foster Mortuary of Wilson was in charge of arrangments. Oct. 7, 2002

Henry Reifschneider Jr 1912-2002
DIGHTON - Henry Reifschneider Jr., 90, died Oct. 6 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 25, 1912, at Kutter, Russia, the son of Henry and Eva Maylinger Reifschneider Sr. He married Bertha Karb April 28, 1934, at Scott City. She died Aug 4, 1986. A resident of Great Bend since 1991, coming from Lane County, he was a farmer-stockman in Lane County and worked for the Hineman Jack Farm. Reifschneider was a member of the United Methodist Church and J.O.Y. Center, both of Dighton, and Great Bend Senior Center. Survivors include two sons, Gerald Reifschneider of Concordia and Dale Reifschneider of Louisville; two daughters, Bettie Stithem of Goodland and Cheryl Broaderway of Great Bend; one sister, Rosa Popp of Denver, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be at Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Friends may until 8 p.m. tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the church of J. O. Y. Center, both in care of the funeral home. Oct. 8, 2002

Loretta C. Moran 1910-2002
LA CROSSE - Loretta C. Moran, 92, died Oct. 7 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. She was born July 10, 1910, at Nekoma, the daughter of Michael T. and Mary Sweeney Moran. She was a graduate of St. Mary of the Plains High School in Dodge City and a 1933 graduate of the University of Kansas of Lawrence, with a degree in music. A lifetime resident of Rush County, she was past president of Nekoma State Bank of Nekoma. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Catholic Church Altar Society, both of McCracken. She received a 50 year plaque from the Kansas Banker's Association for her service in the banking industry. Survivors include one brother, Martin Moran of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and one sister, Alice Potter of Omaha, Neb. She was preceded in death by one brother, Francis Moran. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Revs. Eugene Kenny, Patrick Leahy, Charles Mazouch and Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery in McCracken. Friends may call from 1-8 tonight at the funeral home and from 9-9:50 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The family will receive friends from 6-7 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Heritage Association, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 8, 2002

Helen I. Riggs 1928-2002
BUSHTON - Helen I. Riggs, 74, died Oct. 6 at Central Kansas Medical Center-Long Term Care at Ellinwood Hospital. She was born Jan. 24, 1928, at Macksville, the daughter of Warrin and Bertha Fergus Osgood. She was a 1945 graduate of Matfield Green High School. She married Lawrence A. Riggs on March 16, 1947, at Florence. He died Sept. 21, 1982. A resident of Bushton since 1949, she was a homemaker and caregiver. Mrs. Riggs was a member of First United Methodist Church, Circle and United Methodist Women, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Double Seven Club, 3T Card Club, Sew and So Club and served on the church board for nine years, all in Bushton. Survivors include three sons, Dennis L. Riggs of Phillipsburg, Charles J. Riggs of Norwich, Conn., and Douglas E. Riggs of Bushton; two brothers, Francis Osgood of Council Grove and Kenneth Osgood of Kinsley; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Osgood and infant, Orville Osgood. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Revs. Janet Myers and David Trott officiating. Burial will be at Bushton Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or Hospice of Barton County, both in care of the funeral home. Oct. 8, 2002

Ruth Annette Danielson 1920-2002
LINDSBORG - Ruth Annette Danielson, 81, died Oct. 7 at Bethany Home in Lindsborg. She was born Dec. 24, 1920, in rural Roxbury, the daughter of John and Anna Sophia Bengston Sjostrom. She married Paul Stromquist Danielson on Nov. 29, 1958, at Lindsborg. A resident of Lindsborg since 1988, coming from Freemont, she was a former medical technician for Lindsborg Community Hospital, V.A. Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., and Mowery Clinic of Salina. Mrs. Danielson was a member of Freemont Lutheran Church of Freemont, WELCA, Swedish Sewing Club, Svensk Hyllningsfest Committee and the Mizaar Club. Survivors include her husband of the home; and two sisters, Frances Burns of Great Bend and Emeline Brunsell of Lindsborg. She was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Sjostrom; and one sister, Helen Bailey. Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. James Harrison and Don Hawk officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the church cemetery in Freemont. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Hays-Christian Funeral Home in Lindsborg. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Bethany Home, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 9, 2002

Dorothy Evelyn Hunley 1912-2002
HUDSON - Dorothy Evelyn Hunley, 90, died Oct. 8 at Leisure Homestead of Stafford. She was born Oct. 4, 1912, at St. John, the daughter of Thomas Harwood and Bessie D. Mawhirter. She was a 1931 graduate of St. John High School. She married Merrill Delos Hunley on July 27, 1940, at St. John. He died Oct. 7, 1985. A lifetime resident of Stafford County, she was a cook for USD 350 at Hudson. Mrs. Hunley was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Trinity Choir, Trinity Womens Guild and EHU, all of Hudson. Survivors include two sons, Rod Hunley of Morrison, Colo., and Rick Hunley of St. John; one brother, Fred Mawhirter of St. John; two sisters, Ora Mae Coen of St. John and Lena Chapman of Merced, Calif.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil Mawhirter, Virgil Mawhirter and Faye Mawhirter; and five sisters, Velva Zies, Grayce McAllister, Merle Risley, Ruth Harper and Cleo Miller. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel of St. John with the Rev. George Redington officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 1-8 tonight at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the chapel. Oct. 10, 2002

Clare J. Henderson 1925-2002
DUNDEE - Clare J. Henderson, 77, died Oct. 8 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. He was born Jan. 1, 1925, at Geraldine, Mont., the son of Claude and Clara Mae Yeager Henderson. He married Jane F. Boor on Jan. 3, 1953, at Dodge City. He was a resident of Dundee since 1956, coming from Larned. Henderson was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Ken Henderson of Hoisington; one daughter, Cecilia Haynes of Macksville; two brothers, Chester Henderson of Chanute and Keith Henderson of Trout Creek, Mont.; one sister, Iris Godinez of Pueblo, Colo; and four grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family School Endowment Fund or American Heart Fund, both in care of the funeral home. Oct. 10, 2002

Irma Agnes VonPessl 1912-2002
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Irma Agnes VonPessl, 90, died Oct. 9 at Colorado Springs. She was born Sept. 13, 1912, at Olmitz, the daughter of John J. and Sophia Gleissner Bahr. She married Herbert A. VonPessl on Sept. 25, 1933, at Olmitz. He preceded her in death. A resident of Colorado Springs since 1933, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Cook of Colorado Springs; and three sisters, Florence Shaffer of Great Bend, Valeria Malek of Albert and Matilda Spicka of Timken. She was preceded in death by one son, Herbert VonPessl; one brother, Paul Bahr; and two sisters, Marie Maneth and Margaret Wendel. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Joseph's Southgate in Colorado Springs. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery in Colorado Springs. Nolan Funeral Home of Colorado Springs was in charge of arrangements. Oct. 11, 2002

Elsie Marie McCamey 1935-2002
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Elsie Marie McCamey, 67, died Oct. 10 at Bloomington. She was born Jan. 9, 1935, at Muleshoe, Texas. She married Jerry P. McCamey. A resident of Bloomington, coming from Indianapolis, Ind., and Great Bend, she was active in ministry work with her husband for 50 years. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Jerry Glynn McCamey and Alan Kirk McCamey; one daughter, Deborah Edgeworth; two brothers, Wilburn Kirkland and Glynn Kirkland; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Temple of Indianapolis. Burial will be at Washington Park East cemetery of Indianapolis. Friends may call from 5-8 tonight at Flanner and Buchanan Mortuaries of Indianapolis. Memorials are suggested to Barnabas Ministry, in care of the mortuary. Oct. 11, 2002

Orville 'Punch' Doeden 1923-2002
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Orville "Punch" Doeden, 79, died Oct. 8 at Mantey Heights in Grand Junction. He was born May 9, 1923, at Claflin, the son of George and Amanda Christensen Doeden. He married Ann on Sept. 22, 1951, at Oklahoma City, Okla. A resident of Grand Junction, he was an oilfield worker. Doeden was a member of Elks Lodge of Sterling, Colo. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Gary Doeden of Norwich, Conn., and Greg Doeden of Aurora, Colo.; one daughter, Cecelia Weaver of Aurora; two brothers, Charles Doeden of Hoisington and Harold Doeden of Yates Center; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Funeral service was today at Martin Mortuary Chapel of Grand Junction with the Rev. Helen Stephens officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens in Grand Junction. Memorials are suggested to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, in care of the chapel. Oct. 11, 2002

Paul A. Wagner 1926 - 2002
OTIS - Paul A. Wagner, 76, died Oct. 11 at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital in Wakeeney. He was born Jan. 30, 1926 in rural Otis, the son of Samuel A. and Mollie (Adolph) Wagner. He married Alice Bender on Sept. 4, 1949 at Russell. She preceded him in death on April 26, 1980. Wagner married Mary Agnes Lang on March 23, 1990 at Ellis. She preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2001. A resident of Ellis since 1990 coming from Otis, he was a farmer and a mechanic for Ochs, Inc. in Otis. Wagner was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Otis. A lifetime member of VFW Post 9137 and American Legion Post 0173, both of Otis, Wagner was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the Sunflower Polka Club and P.O.L.K. of America Polka Club. Survivors include: one son, Dwayne Wagner of Great Bend; two daughters, Ellen R. Prescott of Manhattan and Brenda L. Horton of Lindale, Texas; six step-sons, Gerald Lang of Durham, NH, Robert Lang of Bedford, IN, Ernest Lang of Douglas, WY, Edward Alan Lang of Sycamore, IL, Brian Lang of Solomon, and Clyde Lang of Ellis; four step-daughters, JoAnn Hohman of Wakefield, Marilyn Steuve of Olpe, Donna Scarbrough of Austin, Texas, and Velma Jackman of Roanoke, Texas; three brothers, Raymond Wagner, Norman Wagner, and Harold Wagner all of Otis; one sister, Arlene Maier of Oakley; four grandchildren; 28 step grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one sister, Elsie Boxberger, and one grandson, Gary Allan Wagner. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis with the Rev. Jeri Dexheimer officiating. Burial will be at the Lutheran cemetery in Otis with a flag presentation by VFW Post 9137 and American Legion Post 0173. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home and 9 p.m. to service time Tuesday at the church. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Otis Ambulance Fund or American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 13, 2002

Kenneth (Bud) C. McGee 1934 - 2002
LARNED - Kenneth (Bud) C. McGee, 67, died Oct. 11 at the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. He was born Dec. 15, 1934 in Clay Center, the son of James Summer and Ruth Roxie Roland McGee. He married Shirley A. Hanna on July 18, 1959 in San Bernardino, CA. A Larned resident since 1962 moving from Clay Center, he was a road grader operator for Pawnee County Road Department and worked at Row's Bakery. McGee was a member of the First United Methodist Church and VFW Post 7271, both of Larned, and served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Tony McGee of Oklahoma and Randy McGee of Hutchinson; one sister, Barbara Fishback of Chapman; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmie Jr. McGee and Jack (Jay) McGee; and three sisters, Dorothy Fern McGee, Ruth Sharon Liby, and Edith May Wallace. The funeral, with military honors, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Larned cemetery with the Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Memorials are suggested to the Bud McGee memorial in care of the funeral home.
