Donald C. Meisenheimer Jr. 1933 - 2002
ELLINWOOD - Donald C. Meisenheimer Jr, 69, died Oct. 24 at Kansas Heart Hospital of Wichita. He was born July 21, 1933 in La Crosse, the son of Donald Sr. and Martha Worden Meisenheimer. He was a 1951 graduate of Otis High School in Otis. He married Carol J. Bohl, Aug. 15, 1966 in Winnemucca, Nev. A resident of Ellinwood since 1999, he was a retired Chief Master Sgt., serving in the United States Air Force for 28 years, and worked as a refinery technician for Exxon in Benecia, Calif., retiring in 1996. Meisenheimer was a member of First Baptist Church of Ellinwood. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Steven Meisenheimer of Suisun City, Calif.; one daughter, Jamie Morales of Ellinwood; four brothers, James Meisenheimer of Greenfield, Mo., John Meisenheimer of Alvin, Texas, Mark Meisenheimer of Thorton, Colo., and Richard Meisenheimer of Salina; four sisters, Cynthia Oberle of Great Bend, Nancy Bostick of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Marcia Misegadis of North Platte, Neb., and Sara Weighous of Ness City; and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. David Wesner officiating. Burial will be at Albert cemetery in Albert. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today at Kimple Funeral Home of Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. Oct. 27, 2002

Dorothy Irene Harrison 1926 - 2002
ODESSA - Dorothy Irene Harrison, 76, died Oct. 24 at Medical Center Hospital of Odessa. She was born July 5, 1926 in Kirk, Colo., the daughter of Cloyd Earl and Bernice Irene Porter Laughlin. She married James Cecil Harrison Sr. April 13, 1950 in Medicine Lodge. Mrs. Harrison was a member of the Christian Church, teaching Sunday School and serving as the church organist. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Den Leader Trainer. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, James Cecil Harrison Jr. and Timothy Earl Harrison, both of Odessa; two daughters, Theresa Maine Smith of Odessa and Rev. Ola Irene Harrison of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, Cloyd Orrin Laughlin of Great Bend; one sister, Marjorie Lois Laughlin Scott of Mountain Home, Ark.; six grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two infant children, three brothers, and one sister. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethany Christian Church with the Revs. Robert Scofield and George Randall officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Buffalo Trail Scout Rand Land Acquisition Fund in care of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Oct. 27, 2002

Alma Robison Wuthnow 1926 - 2002
OVERLAND PARK - Alma Robison Wuthnow, 76, died Oct. 23. She was born March 20, 1926 in Bison. She was a graduate of the University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism. A resident of Overland Park, she taught fourth and fifth grade at Sequoyia Elementary School in Overland Park during the 1960s. Survivors include one son, John Wuthnow; one daughter, Terri Boyle; one sister, Oakie Domenech; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Corbin E. Robison and Dr. L.J. Robison. Funeral service was held Oct. 26 at Charter Funerals of Merriam. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Lone Star cemetery of Bison. Oct. 27, 2002

Lawrence Joseph Sauber 1913 - 2002
ELLINWOOD - Lawrence Joseph Sauber, 89, died Oct. 25 at Woodhaven Care Center of Ellinwood. He was born Oct. 3, 1913 in rural Barton County, the son of Peter Matthew and Frances Hoffman Sauber. He married Mathilda Bieberle in Sept. 1941 at St. Peter & Paul Church in Ellinwood. She died July 14, 1959. He married Bertha Herrman Jacobs July 8, 1961 at St. Patrick's Church in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was a retired farmer, worked in construction at Spacil Electric, and owned and operated Larry's Greenhouse, Tree & Shrub Maintenance. He was a custodian for 28 years at the Ellinwood Grade School. Sauber was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Knights of Columbus 1187. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Daniel Sauber of Salina; three daughters, Kathy Kaiser of Kingman, Mary Steichen of Lawrence, and Kathleen Asher of Dodge City; three brothers, Ambrose Sauber and Jim Sauber of Ellinwood and Emmanuel Sauber of Hutchinson; one sister, Margaret Huslig of Salina; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Nicholas Steichen. Altar Society rosary will be held at 3 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary following, today at the church. Friends may call from 1-3 p.m. today at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood and from 3-8 p.m. today at the church. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m.Monday at the church. Burial will be in Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to the Church Steeple Fund in care of the funeral home. Oct. 27, 2002

Gerald J. Hammeke 1924 - 2002
ELLINWOOD - Gerald J. Hammeke, 78, died Oct. 26 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 14, 1924 in Ellinwood, the son of John T.and Mamie Schartz Hammeke. A lifetime resident of Ellinwood, he was a retired farmer and stockman. Hammeke was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus 1187. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany and the European Theatre during World War II. Survivors include two brothers, Omer Hammeke of Ellinwood and Dr. John C. Hammeke of Leavenworth; and two sisters, Sister Imelda Rose Hammeke of Wichita and Colleen Youngers of Goddard. He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul LaVern Hammeke, and an infant sister. Altar Society Rosary will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, at Kimple Funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Revs. Gerald Hammeke and James J. Roth officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with family visitation from 7-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the St. Joseph School Endowment Fund in care of the funeral home. John Luttrell Rigg 1907-2002
STAFFORD - John Luttrell Rigg, 94, died Oct. 25 at Stafford District Hospital. He was born Dec. 6, 1907, near Higginsville, Mo., the son of Perry David and Margaret Euphema Luttrell Rigg. He was a 1925 graduate of a rural high school in Leon. He married Helen Whitney on July 28, 1933, at Anthony. She died in 1973. He then married Georgia Whitlock in 1975. A resident of Stafford since 1933, he was an oil field roughneck, the owner and operator of a dry cleaning shop in Stafford and a salesman for Truck-Trailer Supply Co. of Stafford. Rigg was a member of United Methodist Church, member and past president of Stafford Rotary Club, member of Hutchinson Rotary Club, past commander of Christopher L. Stockwell Post 131 American Legion of Stafford, past master of Stafford Lodge 252 AF & AM Masonic Lodge, where he received his 50-year pin in 1984, high priest of Joppa Chapter 52, member of Royal Arch Masons, past illustrious master of Hutchinson Council 13, member of Cryptic Masons and most illustrious grand master of Cryptic Masons of Kansas. He was also past commander of Stafford Commandry 57, Knight's Templar, past patron of Vashti Chapter 64, Order of the Eastern Star, Knight of the York Cross of Honor, past prior of Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests, past sovereign of Red Cross of Constantine, member of Royal Order of Scotland and York Rite College of Kansas 125. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, having served during World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; and two sisters, Louise Kavit of El Dorado; and June Merrian of Texas. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Minnis Chapel of Stafford with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church of Stafford, in care of the chapel. Oct. 28, 2002

Grover Cleveland Snyder 1917-2002
ELLSWORTH - Grover Cleveland Snyder, 85, died Oct. 26 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus of Wichita. He was born April 5, 1917, in Morton County, the son of John W. and Minnie Ethel Garton Snyder. He married Dolores Reimer on May 29, 1948, at Hoisington. A resident of Ellsworth for eight years, coming from Great Bend, he was a motor route driver for Ellsworth and Great Bend papers and a retired City of Hoisington Water Plant operator and electrician. Snyder was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church of Ellsworth, local post commander and District Six commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fourth Degree Knight of Knights of Columbus of Ellsworth, member of VFW Post 6485 and past Grand Knight at Hoisington Knights of Columbus. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater until discharged due to wounds he received. He was a member of the Flying Tigers, a Pearl Harbor survivor and a recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, John Snyder of Great Bend; two daughters, Gaye Davis of Benton and Elaine Snyder of Ellsworth; and six grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Parsons Funeral Home of Ellsworth. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Daniel Scheetz officiating. Burial will be at Ellsworth Memorial cemetery with VFW military graveside rites. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Bethphage, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 28, 2002

Barbara K. Apel 1901-2002
ELLINWOOD - Barbara K. Apel, 101, died Oct. 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center Long Term Care of Ellinwood. She was born Feb. 27, 1901, at St. Sebastian, Ohio, the daughter of Mathias and Agnes Schaefer Heyne. She married Mathias Apel on Sept. 27, 1921, at Ellinwood. He died Sept. 8, 1978. A resident of Barton County for more than 70 years and a resident of Augusta for more than 20 years, she was a farm wife and gardener. Mrs. Apel was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Ellinwood, St. James Catholic Church of Augusta, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella. Survivors include two sons, Norman J. Apel of Great Bend and Harry C. Apel of Augusta; three daughters, Sally (Sylvestra B.) Sigley of Augusta, Theresa A. Wornkey of Wyandotte, Okla., and Mary Jean (Jeanie) Miller of Great Bend; three sisters, Clara Whitney of Irving, Texas, Monica Robl of Ellinwood and Alfredia Miller of Kinsley; 23 grandchildren; many step grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; numerous step great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two infant sons; three brothers, Philip, Ferdanand and Philip; three sisters, Rosa Kramp, Sister Caroline Heyne and Margaret Knorr; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Altar Society rosary, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, both at Kimple Funeral Home of Ellinwood. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Ellinwood with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Commanche District cemetery of Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's School Endowment Fund or St. James Building Fund, both in care of the funeral home. Oct. 29, 2002

James P. Huslig 1954-2002
Wichita - James P. Huslig, 48, died Oct. 26 in Wichita. He was born March 17, 1954, in Great Bend, the son of Ernest and Audry Huslig. He married Theresa Stadler Sept. 23, 1978, at Topeka. A resident of Wichita, formerly of Great Bend and having lived in the McPherson area, he was an administrator for Sherwin-Williams Quality Systems. Huslig was a member of Church of the Resurrection and Knights of Columbus, both of Wichita. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son John Huslig of the home; three daughters, Sarah Huslig, Laura Huslig and Catherine "Katie" Huslig, all of the home; and one brother, David Huslig and his wife Cindy, of Great Bend. Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, Catholic Charities of Wichita or the education fund for the Huslig children, all in care of Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel in Wichita. Oct. 29, 2002

Jerry D. Young 1931-2002
LYONS - Jerry D. Young, 71, died Oct. 27. He was born Sept. 11, 1931, at Wichita. He married Norma. A resident of Lyons, he was a vending supervisor for Pepsi-Cola in Great Bend until his retirement. Survivors include his wife of Salina; one son, Dale Young of Salina; two daughters, Gayle Young-Monroe of Lovettsville, Va., and Ann Young of Junction City; one sister, Melba Young-Geoffrey of Danville, Ind.; and three grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lyons Municipal cemetery of Lyons with the Rev. Tom Eastman officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church of Lyons. Memorials are suggested to PSP Society Woodholme Medical Building, in care of Geisendorf-Rush Smith Funeral Home of Salina. Oct. 30, 2002

Gladys Marie Stricklin 1912-2002
HUTCHINSON - Gladys Marie Stricklin, 90, died Oct. 23 at Hester Care Center of Wesley Towers. She was born Jan. 31, 1912, at Cabool, Mo., the daughter of Woodley Thomas and Sarah Elizabeth McGhee Johnson. She married Jess Lee Stricklin in 1952 at Downing, Calif. He died Dec. 16, 1975. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, she was a hairdresser and salon owner in Pratt and Hutchinson, assistant manager and chief hostess at King's Imperial Restaurant of Lynwood, Calif., and was a nanny and provided elderly care until her retirement in 2000. Mrs. Stricklin was a member of the Baptist faith, Order of the Eastern Star 488 of Fontana, Calif., Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem of San Bernadino, Calif., Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2550 and Auxiliary and Women of the Moose 1371 of Hutchinson. Survivors include one stepdaughter, Lavonne Schakel of Garden Grove, Calif.; and one sister, Lillian Walker of South Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by one son, Charles Stricklin; four brothers, Lee Johnson, Harry Johnson, Hubert Johnson and Fred Johnson; four sisters, Dollie Demitt, Nancy Johnson, Mattie Demitt and Marion Winters; and one grandson. Memorial graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eastside cemetery of Hutchinson with the Rev. Marvin E. Bales officiating. Friends may sign the book until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, all at Elliott Mortuary of Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to Wesley Towers, in care of the mortuary. Oct. 31, 2002

Wayne E. McCurdy 1930-2002
WAKEENEY - Wayne E. McCurdy, 72, died Oct. 27 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus of Wichita. He was born Aug. 27, 1930, on the family farm near Brownell, the son of Robert and Bessie Underwood McCurdy. He married JoAnn Betson on Jan. 13, 1953, at Hoisington. A resident of WaKeeney, he was an auctioneer. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Mike McCurdy of WaKeeney and Robert McCurdy of Garden City; one daughter, Cindy Basgall of Rexford; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy McCurdy, Harold McCurdy, Marvin McCurdy and Marlin McCurdy; and six sisters, Lois Richardson, Norma Owen, Patricia Likes, Fern Sunley and two infant sisters. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Schmitt Funeral Home of WaKeeney with the Rev. Randy Gibbs officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or Via Christi St. Francis Surgical Intensive Care Unit, both in care of the funeral home. Oct. 31, 2002

Vernon H. Wilborn 1908-2002
HOISINGTON - Vernon H. Wilborn, 94, died Oct. 30 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center of Hoisington. He was born July 26, 1908, in rural Galatia, the son of Scott and Maude O. Hopkins Wilborn. He was a graduate of Claflin High School and attended Salt City Business College of Hutchinson. He married Ceola E. Smiley on June 29, 1935, at Salina. She died Sept. 19, 1989. He then married Maxine Rowley on June 8, 1990, at Hoisington. A lifetime resident of the Susank-Galatia area, he was a teacher for two years at a rural school near Susank and a retired farmer and stockman. Wilborn was a member of First United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge 331 A.F. and A.M., both of Hoisington. He was also a former board of director of First Kansas Bank of Hoisington, served on the USD 431 Board of Education, Barton County FHA Board and Barton County SCS Board. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Verna Rae Wilborn of Littleton, Colo.; one stepson, John Rowley of Wichita; three stepdaughters, Donna Wegele of Pratt, Joann Guerrero of San Jose, Calif., and Marilyn Bowman of Arlington, Texas; and one sister, Jessie Deets of Hemet, Calif. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Emerett Wilborn and Everett Wilborn; and one sister, Aleen Stoskopf. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-9 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home of Hoisington and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Oct. 31, 2002
