Leon D. "Bush" Bushnell 1919-2002
Leon D. 'Bush' Bushnell, 83, of Great Bend died Nov. 2, at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 10, 1919 at Great Bend, the son of Clarence and Margaret Savoy Bushnell. He married
Josephine L. Kopke Dec. 22, 1984 at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a branch manager for Finance America Company in Great Bend before his retirement in 1981. Bushnell was a member of American Legion Post 180, Stone Ridge Club, and a life member and past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge 1127 all of Great Bend. He was an Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two step-daughters, Diane Brown Cope of Great Bend, and Alice Brown Lieber of Allen Park, Mich.; and five step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Owen Bushnell; and two infant brothers. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Great Bend Cemetery, with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. Graveside rites will be by Elks Lodge 1127 of Great Bend. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today, and from 9 - noon Monday all at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Ruth Ellen Stewart 1932-2002
BUSHTON - Ruth Ellen Stewart, 70, died Oct. 30 at Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born Oct. 28, 1932, at Mindenmines, Mo., the daughter of Ora O. and Mary Louella Maxwell Hilton. She married
Gilbert Franklin Stewart on Sept. 2, 1950, at Springdale, Ark. He died in 1975. A resident of Bushton for seven years, coming from Wichita, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Phil Stewart of Bushton; two daughters, Belinda Sue Ashley and Bonna Lynn Baize, both of Wichita; two sisters; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Roger F. E. Stewart; two brothers; two sisters; and one granddaughter, Tina Stewart. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rosedale cemetery of Mulberry. Lloyd H. Hejny 1922-2002
Lloyd H. Hejny, 80, died Oct. 30 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. He was born March 19, 1922, in Barton County, the son of Aldrich and Rose Serpan Hejny. He married
Rosie Gleissner on Oct. 10, 1946, at Hoisington. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was a farmer and businessman. Hejny was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 180 and Eagle's Lodge 646, and VFW 3111, all of Great Bend, and a member of USS Denver Association. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Larry Hejny of Great Bend; one daughter, Janis Link of Great Bend; one brother, Orval Hejny of Olmitz; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Gertrude R. Smith 1928-2002
Gertrude R. Smith, 74, died Oct. 30 at Columbia Wesley Medical Center of Wichita. She was born Sept. 6, 1928, at Otis, the daughter of John A. and Theresa R. Suchy Krestin. She married
Paul Smith at Great Bend. He preceded her in death. A longtime resident of Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Smith attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Gary Smith of Dodge City; two daughters, Debra Castle of McCammon, Ind., and Belva Hock of Nebraska; two sisters, Frances Krestin of St. Marys and Alice South of Great Bend; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur C. Krestin, Fredrick Krestin, Edward Lee Krestin and Clarence Krestin; and three sisters, Caroline Mlymer, Grace A. Brack and Viola Kober. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at the church with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. ELLINWOOD - Louise A. Lang, 79, died Oct. 31 at St. Catherine's Hospital of Garden City. She was born Dec. 17, 1922, at Huntley, Ill., the daughter of John and Mary Berns Erny. She married
Richard R. Lang on Aug. 9, 1947, at Hutchinson. He died Nov. 1, 2000. A resident of Ellinwood since 1954, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Lang was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Alter Society, both of Ellinwood. Survivors include two sons, Donald V. Lang of Ellinwood and Robert E. Lang of Tulsa, Okla.; two daughters, Barbara Chulufas of Harrisonville, Mo., and Laura Fickel of Garden City; one brother, James Erny of Allen Park, Mich.; one sister, Rosmond Dick of Milton; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Kimple Funeral Home of Ellinwood. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. LAWRENCE — Bette Lou Scheufler Lacer, 72, died Dec. 30 at Brandon Woods Retirement Community. She was born March 19, 1930, at Ellinwood, the daughter of Alfred G. and Clara Dannebohm Scheufler. She graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1947. A resident of Lawrence, coming from Gardner, she was a manager for EZ Shop in Lawrence. Survivors include one son, Edward D. Lacer of Ottawa; one brother, Gerald D. “Dewey” Scheufler of Lafayette, Ind.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, David Kratzer in 2001. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery in Lawrence. ELLINWOOD — Philip H. Koelsch, 88, died Dec. 30 at Ellinwood. He was born Aug. 28, 1914, at Ellinwood, the son of Henry F. and Alice Gilpin Koelsch. He married
Aline Baxter on Jan. 17, 1947, at Ellinwood. A lifetime resident of Ellinwood, he was a retired oilfield pumper. He was a member of American Legion, Elks Lodge and United Church of Christ, all of Ellinwood. He was a World War II veteran having served from 1941-1945. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Henry O. Koelsch of Long Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Barbara Bubaugh of Medford, Okla.; one sister, Celeste Gaynor of Congers, GA.; and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Larry Young officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Commanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. BURDETT — Edith Fall, 88, died Dec. 27 at Cardondelet Hospice Service in Tucson, Ariz. She was born Aug. 11, 1914, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Elmer H. and Nettie Proctor Oswalt. She attended school in Sylvia. She married
Gene Fall on Sept. 23, 1932, at St. John. He died Jan. 23, 1981. A longtime resident of both Reno and Pawnee counties, she was employed by the Burdett Telephone Company, Kleins Market and Larned State Hospital, and was a homemaker. She was a member of United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Burdett Seniors, all of Burdett, and Ft. Larned Belles of Larned. Survivors include one son, Vernon W. ”Scotty” Fall of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Hazel Kreie of Hutchinson; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, William Oswalt, and one sister, Alice Coons. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park cemetery in Hutchinson with family members officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. The casket will remain closed. Roberta Ann Gray 1957-2002
LARNED — Roberta Ann Gray, 45, died Dec. 26 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital of Larned. She was born April 14, 1957, at Shawnee, Okla., the daughter of Robert Eugene and Abeliene Yott Gray. She was a resident of Larned since 2000, coming from Hays. Gray was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Garden City. Survivors include one son, Aron Gray of Larned; one daughter, Anna-Marie Gray of Hays; three sisters, Linda Ryan of San Angelo, Texas, Alice Sohrweid of Colorado City, Texas, and Juanita Lee of Hobbs, N.M.; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one brother, Don Dean Page. Memorial service will be at a later date at Garden City. Cremation has taken place. JETMORE — Rachel Nusser, 81, died Dec. 28 at Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center of Jetmore. She was born June 19, 1921, in Ness County, the daughter of Alex Sr. and Anna Hafner Schwartz. She married
Lloyd Leonard Nusser on Aug. 12, 1945, at Wichita. He died Dec. 31, 1972. A resident of Jetmore, she was owner of Nusser Chevrolet of Jetmore. Mrs. Nusser was a member of United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary, both of Jetmore, and National Auto Dealer Association. Survivors include one son, Terry Nusser of Jetmore; one daughter, Janice Thoben of Jetmore; one sister, Freda Ellis of Anderson, Mo.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Alex Schwartz Jr., Victor Schwartz and Ben Schwartz; and three sisters, Lizzie Heronemus, Lydia Keene and Esther Stieben. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount cemetery of Jetmore. LARNED — Mary Frances Hertach, 87, died Dec. 28 at Hospice of Reno County of Hutchinson. She was born Jan. 23, 1915, the daughter of William and Barbara Kirmer Oberle. She married
Leo A. Hertach Jr., on June 1, 1936, at Bushton. He died March 3, 1989. A lifetime resident of Larned, moving to Hutchinson in 1996, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hertach was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altar Society and Golden Rule Club, and helped at Sacred Heart School lunch room, all of Larned. Survivors include two sons, Maurice Hertach and Gerald Hertach, both of Hutchinson; two brothers, William Oberle and Urban Oberle, both of Claflin; four sisters, Barbara Orth of Bushton, Anna Nordman of Albert, Rita Stoss and Dorothy Stoss, both of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Ambrose Oberle, Andrew Oberle, Philip Oberle, Jerome Oberle and Clement Oberle; one grandchild, Jessica Hertach; and one great-grandchild, Kylie Crawford. Funeral Mass was today at the church with the Revs. Dennis Reed and James J. Roth officiating. Burial was at Larned Cemetery. RAEFORD, N.C. — Harriet Shook Kaiser Logsdon, 81, died Dec. 25 at Autumn Care Nursing Home of Raeford. She was born May 14, 1921 in Centralia, Ill., the daughter of Clifford and Ruth Shook. She married
Clyde Kaiser in Great Bend. He preceded her in death. She married
Loren Logsdon. He preceded her in death. A former resident of Great Bend, she was employed as senior clerk with Mobil Oil Co. in Great Bend for many years. Mrs. Logsdon was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Council of Jobs Daughters, Royal Matron of Order of Amaranth in Wichita, American Legion Auxiliary, and was active in the St. Rose Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include one brother, William C. “Tom” Shook of Liberal and one sister, Ruth Pound Hoard of Tucson, Ariz. She was preceded in death by one brother, Winston Shook. Graveside service was held Friday at Dunn, N.C. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Great Bend.
