Arcadio Banda 1906-2002
Arcadio Banda, 96, died Dec. 15 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. He was born Jan. 12, 1906, at Fresnillo, Zacateaz, Mexico, the son of Prajedis and Candelania Brrios Banda. He married Beatrice Angviano. She died in 1988. A resident of Great Bend since 1988, coming from Mexico, he was a retired farmer. Banda was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, Antonio Banda and Francisco “Pancho” Banda, both of Holcomb; two daughters, Olivia “Petra” Banda Garcia and Paula Banda, both of Great Bend; 26 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Manuel Banda and Eduardo Banda; three brothers, Francisco Banda, Pedro Banda and Augustine Banda; and one sister, Petra Banda. Vigil service will be at 7:30 tonight at the church. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until 6 tonight and from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday, all at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 17, 2002

Lorena Helen Taylor 1910-2002
HUDSON — Lorena Helen Taylor, 92, died Dec. 13 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born Nov. 30, 1910, at Hudson, the daughter of Dietrick and Mary Weers Schleufer. She married Luther Burnell Taylor on Jan. 10, 1931, at Pratt. He died Aug. 28, 1955. A longtime resident of Stafford County, coming from Wichita and Indiana, she was a dental assistant for Dr. Wilson at Stafford and a sales clerk for a health food store at Wichita. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Hudson, past member of Order of the Eastern Star and Hudson I.Q. Club. Survivors include three daughters, Ramona Blevins of Pioneer, Calif., Mary Ann Brock of Maryville, Tenn., and Connie Hathaway of Hudson; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 3 today at Stafford cemetery with the Rev. George Redington officiating. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Heart Association, both in care of Minnis Chapel of Stafford. Dec. 16, 2002

Helen B. Toler 1913-2002
Helen B. Toler, 89 of Great Bend, died Dec. 14 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. She was born Sept. 2, 1913, at Otis, the daughter of Avery and Sophia Brack Avis. She was a 1932 graduate of Otis High School. A resident of Great Bend for 16 years, coming from Lookwood, Mo., she was the owner of Holiday Resort of Women Lake, Minn., for 20 years. Toler was a member of the Lutheran Church. Survivors include two nephews, Mearl Avis of Arlington, Texas, and Loren Avis of Golden, Colo.; and one niece, Sharon Avis of Columbus, Ohio. A private family inurnment will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery of Otis. The body will be cremated. Memorials are suggested to Great Bend Humane Society, in care of Charter Funerals of Great Bend. Dec. 16, 2002

The Rev. William M. Skidmore 1941-2002
ELLSWORTH — The Rev. William M. Skidmore, 61, died Dec. 13 at Ellsworth County Medical Center in Ellsworth. He was born Oct. 10, 1941, in Edisto Island, S.C., the son of William Sr. and Lynly Magill Skidmore. He graduated from the University of Arizona. He married Irene Tokar on May 19, 1973, in Maryland. A resident of Ellsworth for three years, coming from North Carolina, he was an Episcopal priest and chaplain at St. Francis Academy in Ellsworth and Salina. Skidmore was a member of the musical fraternity at the University of Arizona, the Barton County Community College orchestra, the Ellsworth Ministerial Alliance, a priest of the diocese of western Kansas and served at the Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Ellsworth. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Kate Doetzl of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Elliot Skidmore of Edisto Island; and two grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Cathedral in Salina, with the Rev. James Adams, bishop of western Kansas, officiating. Burial will be at Christ Cathedral. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Academy at Ellsworth or the Humane Society of Saline County, in care of Parsons Funeral Home of Ellsworth. Dec. 15, 2002

Mae L. Gross 1937-2002
Mae L. Gross, 65, of Great Bend, died Dec. 13 at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. She was born March 11, 1937, in Bloomington, Neb., the daughter of Cleveland Franklin and Alice Harger Hayes. She married Loa D. Allen on Jan. 20, 1952, in Phillips County. He died July 7, 1971. She married Clyde E. Gross on Aug. 30, 1974, in Gardner. A resident of Great Bend since 1958, coming from Phillipsburg, she retired from Fuller Brush as a machine operator and worked for the USD 428 food service. Mrs. Gross was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Loa O. Allen of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Marlene Kendall of Phillipsburg and Lynetta Allen of Hays; one brother, Cleve Hayes of Jacksonville, Ore.; one sister, Elsie Dusin of Council Bluffs, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend, with the Rev. Roger Miller officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Brit Spaugh Park and Zoo, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 15, 2002

Donny Taylor 1963-2002
Donny Taylor, 39, of Great Bend, died Dec. 7 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born March 22, 1963, in Lubbock, Texas, the son of Evelyn Ragland Young and Lee Clayton Taylor. He married Lori Winebrinner July 8, 2000, in Olney, Texas. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Levelland, Texas, in 2002, and formerly of Olney, he was employed by Doric Burial Vaults in Newton and coached young children in various sports and activities for several years. Taylor was a member of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Christopher Lee Taylor and Jeffrey Morris, both of Olney; one stepson, Dallas Tomlin of Great Bend; his mother of Wichita Falls, Texas; his father of Olney; three brothers, David Taylor of Wichita Falls, Bobby Ragland of Lubbock, and Jimmy Pollard of Olney; and five sisters, Debbie Jones, Rhonda Cook and Ginger Parks, all of Olney, Darla Dobbs of Wichita Falls, and Theresa Sloan of Newcastle, Texas; and numerous nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Heather Don Taylor. Funeral service was Dec. 11 at Southside Baptist Church of Olney with the Rev. Andy Graham officiating. Burial was at Restland Cemetery. Lunn Funeral Home of Olney was in charge of arrangements. Dec. 13, 2002

Jon Marion Carroll 1944-2002
WOODLAND PARK, Colo. — Jon Marion Carroll, 58, died Dec. 7 at his residence. He was born July 31, 1944, at Wichita, the son of Frank M. and Edna M. Storer Carroll. He was a graduate of Emporia State University. He married Rosemarie K. Urban. A resident of Woodland Park, he was owner of Butterfly Supply Company, former owner of Carroll Oil Production and was involved with Great Plains Inspection of Great Bend and Rod Shop of Casper, Wyo. Carroll was past area chairman of Ducks Unlimited, volunteer reserve deputy for Barton County Sheriff’s Office and member of Ahearn Club of Kansas State University of Manhattan. He served as a foster parent from 1978-1981 and as host parent in the Foreign Exchange Student Program. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served for 28 years and retiring with the rank of Captain in 1992. He was the Commander of Special Forces A Team of Little Rock, Ark. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Fawn Jennifer Carroll of Lawrence and Samantha Renee Carroll of Colorado Springs, Colo. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home of Manhattan with the Rev. Donald D. Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be at Sunrise cemetery of Manhattan. Friends may call from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Mike Ahearn Scholarship Fund of KSU, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 12, 2002

Gerald F. ‘Jerry’ Birzer 1938-2002
ELLINWOOD — Gerald F. “Jerry” Birzer, 64, died Dec. 10 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. He was born Aug. 22, 1938, at Ellinwood, the son of Joseph F. and Marie Anna Huslig Birzer. He was a 1956 graduate of Ellinwood High School. He married Mary Ann Sink Wolford on March 19, 1960, at Reno, Nev. A lifetime resident of Ellinwood, he was employed by Ernsting’s Radiator of Ellinwood until his retirement and was a former employee of L.R. Parsons Roofing of Great Bend. Birzer was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, choir member, Knights of Columbus Council 1187 and Ark Valley Muzzle Loaders, all of Ellinwood. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Cletus Wolford of Ellinwood and David Birzer of Lyons; two daughters, Dorothea Slack and Vickie Alexander, both of Great Bend; three brothers, Jerome Birzer of Ellinwood, Ervin Birzer of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Norman Birzer of Frederick, Md.; three sisters, Theresa Baker of Colby, Marcella Birzer of Ellinwood and Sister Rita Birzer of Great Bend; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Macek and infant, Margaret Mary Birzer. Parish vigil will be at 7:30 tonight at the church, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. David Flagor officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter and Paul cemetery of Ellinwood. Friends may call from 3-8 tonight at the church. Memorials are suggested to Relay for Life or St. Joseph School Endowment Fund, both in care of Sillin Funeral Home of Lyons. Dec. 12, 2002

Louise E. Mitchell 1908-2002
Louise E. Mitchell, 94, of Great Bend, died Dec. 11 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. She was born Sept. 22, 1908, at Dodge City, the daughter of Joseph A. and Anna M. Doll Kliesen. She married Lawrence C. Jack Mitchell on July 10, 1943, at Hollywood, Calif. He died Sept. 29, 1989. A resident of Great Bend, she worked at Montgomery Wards for 17 years, was secretary for Red Cross for 12 years and was deputy treasurer in the treasurer’s office of the state of Kansas. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and St. Patrick Altar Society, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one daughter, Luann Hochanadel of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Joe D. Bellinghausen; two brothers, Elmer Kliesen and Don Kliesen; and one sister, Esther Keller. Altar Society rosary will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Sunflower Diversified Services, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 12, 2002

H. Lee Turner 1927-2002
BOULDER, Colo. — H. Lee Turner, 75, died Dec. 10 at his residence in Boulder. Born July 26, 1927, in Newton, he was the son of Lester Obrien and Eva Hampton Turner. He married Elizabeth L. Dillon Sept. 15, 1951, in Lawrence. He received his LLB from the University of Kansas in 1952. He was a national debate champion in 1951. Living in Boulder since 1984, he was formerly from Great Bend. Turner worked as a brakeman on the Santa Fe Railroad to pay his way through college. In Great Bend, he hung out his shingle as a lawyer and soon was conducting trials throughout Kansas, as the founder of Turner and Boisseau in Great Bend from 1952 to 1984, where he tried over 1, 700 jury trials, including many landmark cases and obtaining many record-breaking judgments. He was the founder of the American Law Firm Association, which now includes 7, 000 lawyers; and a founding member of the ABA Section of Economics of Law Practice and Kansas Defense Lawyers Association. He was the originating chairman of the ABA’s Special Committee on Legal Assistants and for over 13 years was a faculty member of the National Trial Advocacy Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Turner was a member of the American and Kansas Bar Associations; Federation of Insurance Counsel; and Defense Research Institute. He was a member of Boulder Rotary Club. His hobbies included flying, hiking, chess, traveling, scuba diving and collecting art. Turner died peacefully at noon on a sunny day with his wife, all of his children and many grandchildren telling stories to make him smile, and with the grandchildren at schools around the nation phoning and sending e-mail messages of farewell. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth L. Turner of Boulder; one son Chase Turner of Great Bend; five daughters, Deborah Carney of Golden, Colo., Stephanie Turner of Oakland, Calif., Shelley Schlender of Boulder, Cynthia Latham of Moraga, Calif., and Fernanda Litt of Superior, Colo.; one brother, Dan Turner of Topeka; two sisters, Evelyn Zielke of Wichita and Betty Clodfelter of Lakewood, Colo.; and 12 grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Boulder. A private family graveside service will be at Green Mountain cemetery in Boulder. Memorials can be made to Oncology Patient’s Support Fund in care of Children’s Hospital; Att: Susan Ware, 1056 E. 19th Avenue, B-115, Denver, CO 80218. M.P. Milton Arla Rose 1937-2002
Milton Arla Rose, 65, of Great Bend, died Dec. 10 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. He was born Sept. 10, 1937, at Hudson, the son of Chester A. and Mary Krkosska Rose. He married Joyce Ann Davis on Aug. 16, 1959, at Ellinwood. A resident of Great Bend since 1967, coming from Hudson, he was a service representative and truck driver for Champion Technologies of Great Bend for 35 years until his retirement in 1999. Rose was a member of First Baptist Church of Ellinwood. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Sharis Ann Bayless of Great Bend and Lisa Marie Milton of Hudson; two brothers, William R. Rose of Great Bend and Irvin A. Rose of Hudson; one sister, Irene M. Walls of St. John; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Frank Rose, Harry Rose, Elmer Rose, Art Rose and Edward Rose; and one sister, Sophia Schartz. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. David Wesner officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery of Ellinwood. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend and from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. Dec. 11, 2002
