Alfreda F. Miller 1911-2004
KINSLEY — Alfreda F. Miller, 92, died June 7 at her home in Kinsley. She was born June 11, 1911, at St. Sebastian, Ohio, the daughter of Mathias and Agnes Schaefer Heyne. She married George F. Miller Jan. 15, 1935, at Ellinwood. He died July 5, 1988. A longtime Kinsley resident, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Miller was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Kinsley.
Survivors include two sisters, Monica Robl of Ellinwood and Clara Whitney of Irving, Texas; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Richard Miller; three brothers; four sisters; and one great-grandson.
Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Kinsley. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Nicanor Ferangco officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, both at McKillip Funeral Home in Kinsley. Memorials are suggested to St. Nicholas Catholic School, in care of the funeral home.

Edwin ‘Ed’ J. Breit 1932-2004
HOISINGTON — Edwin “Ed” J. Breit, 71, died June 9 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Oct. 31, 1932, at Loretto, the son of Richard and Anna Urban Breit. He married Sophie A. Richmeier May 3, 1958, at Loretto. A resident of Hoisington since 1964, coming from Hays, he was a retired truck driver having worked for Kansas Brick and Tile for 25 years, National Carriers Inc. and USD 431 school district as a bus driver.
Breit was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council 1521, both of Hoisington.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Richard J. Breit of Great Bend and John R. Breit of Hoisington; three grandsons, Mathew J. Breit of Great Bend, Jeremy Ray Breit and Jakob Wayne Breit, both of Hoisington; one brother, Leon R. Breit of Hays; and one sister, Joan M. Breit of North Newton. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia L. Haas and Bernadette Breit.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington, with Father Pascal Klein and Father Trong Tran officiating. Interment will occur at a later date. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hoisington Little League Baseball or South Hoisington Sporting Park, both in care of the funeral home.

Leonard E. Gage 1914-2004
HOISINGTON — Leonard E. Gage, 90, died June 8 at his residence in rural Hoisington. He was born April 22, 1914, at Barton County, the son of Harry E. and Pearl V. Smith Gage. He married Olive M. King April 23, 1939, at Salina. A lifetime resident of rural Hoisington, he was a retired farmer.
Gage was a member of Hoisington Bible Church and Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife of the farm; one son, Dwight L. Gage of Salina; two daughters, Janice Lawless of Overland Park and Eileen Covert of Robinson; two sisters, Maxine Wilson of Salina and Eunice Coon of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elva Gage.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hoisington Bible Church or Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, both in care of the funeral home.

Bernard ‘Bud’ Henry Stein 1919-2004
Bernard “Bud” Henry Stein, 84, of Great Bend, died June 8 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 8, 1919, at Seneca, the son of Henry and Ida Stein. He married Mary Gladys Borges in 1946 at Seneca. She preceded him in death Dec. 27, 1999. A resident of Great Bend since 1946, coming from Seneca, he was a retired owner of Bud Stein Body Shop.
He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and American Legion Post 180, all of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as chief petty officer stationed in the Fresno, Calif., area, where he met his wife, Mary Gladys.
Survivors include one son, Gary Stein and wife Kim of Great Bend; one daughter, Renee Tatman and fiancé Douglas Larson of Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Schon Tatman, Danielle Tatman, Mallory Stein, Gary Miller, Troy Stein, Brandon Stein and Adam Stein; and two great-grandchildren, Aaron Stein and Tyler Stein. He was preceded in death by one son, Leslie Stein; one brother, Matthew Stein; and two sisters, Catheryn Simpson and Sally Link.
Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 10, with Knights of Columbus Rosary following, all at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 11, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery, with military committal rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Legion Gift Fund for military gift packages, in care of the funeral home.

Mabel Louise Herl 1929-2004
Mabel Louise Herl, 74, of Great Bend, died June 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Maple Hill, the daughter of William and Nevada Page Leeper. She married Vic Herl Oct. 8, 1946, at Antonino. A resident of Great Bend since 1950, coming from Ellinwood, she was a secretary of Corrosion Proof Fitting Co. Inc., retiring in 1995.
She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Girl Scout troop leader, Girl Scout camp director, Lake Barton Golf Club, Petroleum Club, Women’s Golf Association, Desk & Derrick Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Great Bend Women’s Bowling Association.
Survivors include four sons, John Herl, Jim Herl and Jerry Herl, all of Great Bend, and Joe Herl of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Vickie Herl of Great Bend, Valerie Hartle of Houston, Texas, and Vanessa McCormick of Powell, Ohio; one sister, Betty Scheufler of Ellinwood; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Elmer Leeper, Gene Leeper, Lawrence Leeper, George Leeper and Earl Leeper; and four sisters, Geneva Rathbun, Gladys Lee, Irene Hoobler and Mildred Lemon.
Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Ted Stoecklein officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Twyla ‘Shug’ Long 1918-2004
BUSHTON — Twyla “Shug” Long, 85, died June 3 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born Nov. 13, 1918, at Barnsdall, Okla., the daughter of Robert Allen and Bessie Johnson Copeland. She married Roy “Bud” Long May 24, 1934, at Barnsdall. He died Aug. 22, 1982. A resident of Bushton for 55 years, coming from Ada, Okla., she was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Don Long of Wichita and Bill Long of Mabank, Texas; three daughters, Sharon Dohrman of Bushton, Nadine Oberle of South Hutchinson and Joy Nickerson of Fair Play, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Lloyd Eugene Long; and one daughter, Joyce Lorene Long.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Burial will be at Bushton Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home. Joseph L. Stiles 1919-2004
WILSON — Joseph L. Stiles, 84, died June 2 at Ellsworth County Medical Center. He was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Fort Scott, the son of Lee and Minnie Stiles. He married Pat Weber September 1944 in Wilson. A resident of Wilson since 1947, coming from Fort Scott, he was the funeral director for Stiles Mortuary and ambulance operator.
Stiles was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, St. Wenceslaus Knights of Columbus and Msgr. John F. McManus American Legion Post 262, all of Wilson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, Tim Stiles of Shawnee, Kevin Stiles of Houston, Texas, Pat Stiles of Claflin and Dr. Michael Stiles of Leawood; two daughters, Sandra Krusich of Pittsburg and Sheila Mauro of Wilson; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Stiles in 1945; and one granddaughter, Carlie Jo Stiles.
Parish vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Foster Mortuary of Wilson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Jerome Morgan officiating. Burial with military honors by Msgr. John F. McManus American Legion Post 262 will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time Saturday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Msgr. John F. McManus American Legion Post 262, in care of the mortuary.

Lela M. Webb 1923-2004
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Lela M. Webb, 81, died June 2 at Springfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. She was born March 5, 1923, in Christian County, Mo., the daughter of Cy and Addie Woods Rogers. She married Allen Jones in 1944. She married Charles Webb in 1958. A resident of the Springfield area, coming from Ellinwood where she had lived for 15 years, she was a waitress, housekeeper, factory worker and nurses’ aide in nursing home facilities.
Survivors include two sons, Gene Webb of Ellinwood and Rick Webb of Republic, Mo.; three daughters, Sandra Fields, Lana Casey and Vickie Ogden, all of Springfield; her long-time companion, Charles E. Webb of Springfield; one sister, Loretta Bowers of Cherokee Village, Ark.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Troy Rogers, Walter Rogers and Homer Rogers; and three sisters, Murva Klapp, Clella Norton and Lola Rogers.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mentor Baptist Church in Rogersville, Mo., with the Rev. Lance Ogden officiating. Burial will be at Eastlawn cemetery in Springfield. Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight at the church. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s Association — Southwest Missouri Chapter or Community Hospice of America, both in care of Preston Marsh Funeral Home of Rogersville.

Ruthye Jo DeWald 1927-2004
BAZINE – Ruthye Jo DeWald, Bazine, died May 29 after an extended hospital stay. Born Sept. 26, 1927, near Brownell, to Lydia and David Keil, Ruthye was the youngest of 14 children. She graduated from Brownell High School in 1945.
Ruthye was united in marriage to Melford DeWald Jan. 21, 1951. They had three children: LuAnn DeWald Rodriquez of Goddard, Carole DeWald of Overland Park and Mark DeWald, deceased.
Ruthye was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She babysat in the Bazine and Ness City communities, becoming a “second mom” to many. Ruthye was known for her culinary skills, including decorating wedding and birthday cakes, and making bierocks and cookies.
Ruthye faithfully attended church and took part in many church activities throughout her lifetime. She was also a member of Bazine Golden Years Center.
Ruthye is survived by her husband of 53 years, Melford DeWald, Bazine; two children, LuAnn Rodriquez and Carole DeWald; four grandchildren; and one brother, Edwin Keil, Long Term Care, Ness City.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. June 12 in the Ness City United Methodist Church. Friends and family who wish to share memories at the memorial service are asked to contact the immediate family in advance.
The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be sent in care of the family and made out to Biblical Ministries Worldwide (supporting missionary Larry Baird, whom Ruthye had babysat) or the Bazine Golden Years Center.
