ELLINWOOD — Patricia A. Shields, 60, died Feb. 29 at Ellinwood District Hospital in Ellinwood. She was born Dec. 7, 1943, in Great Bend, the daughter of Arnold and Frances Hertach Reichuber. She married George Shields July 6, 1968, in Bushton. A 35-year resident of Ellinwood, coming from Fullerton, Calif., and Bushton, she was a sales clerk for Bogers Gallery of Gifts.
Mrs. Shields was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Ellinwood.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Mark Shields of Shawnee; one daughter, Stacy Singleton of Grand View, Mo.; her mother of Ellinwood; and three brothers, Arnold Reichuber Jr. of Goddard, Gerald Reichuber and Leon Reichuber, both of Ellinwood.
Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. today at Kimpel Funeral Home of Ellinwood. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be at Holy Name cemetery in Bushton. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph’s School Endowment Fund or Kansas State University Center for Basic Cancer Research, all in care of the funeral home.

Francis J. Giebler 1917-2004
RUSSELL — Francis J. Giebler, 86, died Feb. 27 at Salina Regional Medical Center in Salina. He was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Catherine, the son of Kilian and Ann Koerner Giebler. He married Blandine Sander Nov. 11, 1946, in Walker. A resident of Russell, he worked for Deines Bros. Furniture Store and was owner of Francis J. Giebler Sales and Repair.
Giebler was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Russell and American Legion Post 99.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Gene Giebler and Michael Giebler, both of Littleton, Colo., and Galen Giebler of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Edna Giebler of Russell and Bonnie Ivy of Anchorage, Alaska; six sisters, Felicitas Zimmerman and Dorothy Staab, both of Victoria, Ginny Beyer and Mary Ann Linenberger, both of Hays, Rose Cobb of Chico, Calif., and Betty Cain of Escondido, Calif.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Giebler and Kilian Giebler; and two sisters, Germaine Spies and infant Felicitas Giebler.
Vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. today at Pohlman-Heise Memorial Chapel in Russell. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Revs. Charles Steier and James Grennan officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s cemetery in Russell. Friends may call from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today at the mortuary. Family will receive friends following the vigil tonight at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Rebecca A. Morrison House of Salina or Masses, both in care of the mortuary.

Dorothy Evelyn Batchman 1918-2004
Dorothy Evelyn Batchman, 85, of Great Bend, died Feb. 25 at Reno, Nev. She was born April 5, 1918, in Great Bend, the daughter of Earl and Ella May Schneider Bardwell. She married Jake T. Batchman Dec. 14, 1938, at Marion. He died May 21, 1998. A resident of Great Bend for most of her life, living in Mesa, Ariz., and Reno since 2000, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Batchman was a member of First United Methodist Church of Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Ted Batchman and wife Nancy of Reno; one sister, Shirley Tomlinson of Fort Collins, Colo.; three grandchildren, Teddie Federici of Seattle, Wash., Timothy Batchman of Atchinson and Tracey Speed of Austin, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Noah Federici of Seattle, Alex Speed of Austin and Andrew Speed of Austin.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to youth group at First United Methodist Church of Great Bend, in care of the funeral home.

Donna Lavon Stevenson 1934-2004
HOISINGTON — Donna Lavon Stevenson, 69, died July 28 at her home in Hoisington. She was born Sept. 17, 1934, at Walnut, Kan., the daughter of Vernice Dale and Barbara Goldie Patterson Kesslar. She married Richard L. Stevenson on May 10, 1952, at Mound Valley. He died Dec. 28, 2003. She was a nurse’s aide at the Hoisington Nursing Home and later owned the Pittle Poor Ceramic Shop. She had been a resident of Hoisington since 1952, coming from Cherryvale.
Mrs. Stevenson was a member of the House of Faith in Hoisington.
Survivors include one son, Robert L. Stevenson, Hoisington; two daughters, Barbara L. Taylor, Hoisington, and Dorothy L. Stevenson, Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, James McDowell, Oklahoma City, Okla., Sonny Kesslar, Greeley, Colo., and Irvin Lee McDowell, El Dorado; a sister, Greta Summer, Baton Rouge, La.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Richard L. Stevenson, one brother, Donnie Kesslar, and one sister, Mary Richards.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Albert Hatten officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Renal Care Group, in care of the funeral home.

Betty G. Stickney 1921-2004
DODGE CITY — Betty G. Stickney, 82, died July 26 at Wichita.
She was born Aug. 29, 1921, at Dodge City, the daughter of Rolland Hays and Edna Marie Belmear West. A lifetime Dodge City resident, living in Wichita for the past two years, she was a homemaker.
On Jan. 31, 1941, she married John H. Stickney at Sacred Heart Church, Dodge City. He died Feb. 3, 1990.
Survivors include: three sons, Thomas Stickney and wife Kathy and William Stickney, all of Great Bend, and Robert Stickney and wife Becky of Medicine Lodge; three daughters, Jayne Hansen and husband Richard of Wichita, Katherine Linneman of Topeka, and Susan Stickney of Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Ruthie VanGilder, Quincy, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, six sisters and two granddaughters.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with Mr. Larry William presiding. The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Camp Discovery in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel in Dodge City.

James R. Bonine 1944-2004
LAREDO, Texas — James R. “Jim” Bonine, 60, died July 26 at the Laredo Medical Center in Laredo, Texas. He was born March 9, 1944, at Ottawa, Kan., the son of Ira and Lillian Bonine. A resident of Zapata, Texas, for more than 20 years, he was a construction worker and missionary in Mexico.
Survivors include: two brothers, Larry Joe Bonine, Sugar Creek, Mo., and Dan Bonine, Great Bend; one sister, Muriel L. Bonine, Alexandria, Va.; a half-sister, Bonnie Wilkins, Lafayette, Ind.; and step-mother Marilyn Bonine, Ottawa.
Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Union Church in Zapata, with the Rev. Bill Campbell officiating. Jim helped to build the church where the service will be conducted. Rose Garden Funeral Home in Zapata is in charge of arrangements. A private family inurnment will follow. Memorials may be sent to the church of the donor’s choice or to the American Heart Association, all in care of the mortuary, 4102 Stop 41 A, Zapata, Texas 78076.

Beth Schenkel 1960-2004
Beth Schenkel, 44, of Great Bend, passed away July 23 at the home of her sister Marie Anderson in Beatrice, Neb., after a valiant battle with cancer.
She was born Feb. 5, 1960, in San Bernadino, Calf., the daughter of Linus and Deloris Stanley Herrman. Born into an Army family, Beth lived in many places as a young child. The family moved to Great Bend, Kan., in 1980. She lived in Winterset, Iowa, from 1995 to 1996 and in Ellinwood, Kan., from 1996 to 2002. Great Bend was her home until ill health forced her to move to Beatrice, Neb.
Beth married Rodney Schenkel on June 18, 1979, in Great Bend. She was a restaurant professional and worked over the years at The Trail Cafe and Dake’s Family Restaurant in Great Bend; Waxy’s Restaurant, Country Kitchen and Jim’s Cafe and Steakhouse, all in Ellinwood; and Melody’s Cafe in St. John. She was also employed at Fuller Brush in Great Bend until her illness.
She was an avid reader and loved spending time crocheting and at the lake with family and friends.
Survivors include her father, Linus Herrman, of Great Bend; one son, Allen Schenkel, of Great Bend; two daughters, Tina Schenkel and Michelle Schenkel, both of Manhattan, Kan.; three brothers, Jim Herrman, Bill Herrman and Stan Herrman, all of Great Bend; three sisters, Beckie Miller, of Glendale, Ariz., Marie Anderson, of Beatrice, Neb., and Cindy Degenhardt, of Great Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Beth was preceded in death by her mother Deloris Herrman; grandparents, Joseph Stanley, Virginia Yarmer, and Wendelin and Dorothy Herrman; one aunt, JoAnn Thomas; and one nephew, Brian Miller.
Vigil service was Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Reginald A. Urban officiating. Inurnment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Barton County Relay for Life or Muscular Dystrophy Association.

James E. Pozalek 1950-2004
OTIS — James E. Pozalek, 54, died July 23 at his home in Otis. He was born March 5, 1950, at Larned, the son of Edward T. and Josephine T. Tuzicka Pozalek. A lifelong resident of Rush County, Pozalek was a laborer in the manufacturing industry.
Pozalek was a member of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include one son, Ryan J. Pozalek, of Claflin; two daughters, Tami K. Hoch, of Great Bend, and Amy Thorne, of Larned; his mother, of Timken; and three sisters, Margaret Pozalek, of Timken, Angela Leikam, of Plainville, and Rita Holmes, of Denver, Colo.
Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Timken, with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross cemetery in Timken. Memorials may be made to the James E. Pozalek Memorial, in care of Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse.

Isabel R. Moran 1921-2004
HARGRAVE — Isabel R. Moran, 82, of Hargrave, Kan., died July 23 at her home in Hargrave. She was born Sept. 15, 1921, in rural Chase, the daughter of Matthew H. Malone and Mary “Mame” P. Barry. She married James C. “Jim” Moran on Dec. 5, 1942, at Fort Pickett, Va. He died July 12, 2001. Mrs. Moran was a Rush County resident since 1945, moving there from Chase.
Mrs. Moran graduated from Marymount Academy, Salina, in 1939. She attended the University of Kansas, Lawrence, from 1941 to 1942, studying Fine Arts. Mrs. Moran worked at Barnard Library part-time and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Moran was an avid reader and was very active in 4-H while her children were in 4-H.
Survivors include four daughters, Roslyn Bethke and her husband Del of Shawnee, Maria Williams and her husband Phil of Topeka, Gail Moran and her husband Mark Hertig, of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Nancy Ong and her husband Chuck of College Station, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Nancy M. Moran, of New Jersey; one brother, Dr. Eugene Malone, of Halstead; one sister, Loretta Forshee, of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren, Craig Moran, Chris Moran, Dan Bethke, JoLynn Bethke, Patrick Bethke, Jared Ong, Justin Ong, Kaitlyn Ong, Shane Hertig and Kyle Hertig; and one great-grandson, Tyler Anthony Moran. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, James E. Moran, November 2000; brothers Mark Malone, John Malone, Philip Malone, Frank Malone and James Malone; and sisters Ruth Gales and Ann Shuler.
Mass of Resurrection will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in La Crosse, with Father Charles Mazouch officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery in McCracken. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. today at the Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse.
Vigil service and rosary were held Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to: Dominican Sisters, Great Bend; St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse; or National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Gordon Ray Legleiter 1964-2004
HOISINGTON — Gordon Ray Legleiter, 40, died July 23 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Feb. 13, 1964, at La Crosse, the son of Raymond A. and Rita Mae Kisner Legleiter. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, he was a restaurant chef.
Legleiter was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington.
Survivors include one daughter, Tessa R. Legleiter of Missouri; his father of Russell; two sisters, Melissa Ann Spires of Hoisington and Karen Marie Hicks of McKenzie, Tenn.; and his grandmother, Josephine Legleiter of McPherson.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at St. John Church cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
