Florie Vena, 94 of Frontenac, KS passed away Friday, October 21, 2011 at Oakview Estates in Frontenac. She was born August 24, 1917in rural Mulberry, KS, the daughter of Emil and Julia (Brisart) Maghe. On August 13, 1941 she married Frank Vena in Girard, KS. He preceded her in death June 7, 1985. Florie was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons: Frank Vena and wife Sandy of rural Asbury, MO and Bob Vena and wife Pat of Frontenac. One daughter: Becky Pace of Pittsburg. One sister: Lena Haynes of Hillsboro, KS, five grandchildren: Joe Venaand wife Jessica; Garren Vena; Michael Vena; Toby Vena and wife Wendy; Johnny Pace; three great-grandchildren: Kyler, Aubrey, and Brenton Vena. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers: Art and Joe Maghe, four sisters: Ameila Maniez, Louise Edwards, Becky Layton and Arlene Oehme. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2011 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends and family are requested to meet at the cemetery for the services. Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Sunday, October 23 at Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac. Friends may also call at the funeral home after 12 noon on Sunday. Services are under the direction of Friskel Funeral Home of Frontenac.

Wanda L. Hensley
Wanda L. Hensley, 72, of Pittsburg died at 9:32 pm, Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Sunset Manor following a short illness. She was born October 9, 1939 in Baxter Springs, KS the daughter of James Walter and Mildred Marie (Pierce) Woods. On October 28, 1968 she was united in marriage to Robert L. Hensley in Girard, KS; he preceded her in death on May 13, 2008. She was a homemaker and was the Mother of Mothers. She worked 30 years for the USD 250 schoo lsystem as a bus driver and custodian; she also worked for the SEK Inter local #37 as a bus driver. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include a daughter Cynthia Sumpter of Pittsburg, two sons: Rick Hensley of Cherryvale, KS and Mike Hensley of Pittsburg; five sisters: Maybele Nelson of Bedford, TX, Arnola Phillips of Louisburg, KS, Margaret Blunt of Pittsburg, Brenda Monahan of Arma, KS, Becky Rantz of Wyland, MI; three brothers: Jay Woods of Washington, NJ, Harold “Butch” Woods and Steven Woods both of Pittsburg, 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons: Sgt. Robert James Hensley and Bud Hensley; a sister Gladys Jo Jones and two brothers: Jack and Gene Woods. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am, Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg with Fr. Robert McElwee as Celebrant and Fr. John Fogliasso as Concelebrant. Burial will follow in the Frontenac City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Friskel Funeral Home at their own convenience from 12 noon until 6 pm Wednesday, where the casket will remain closed. Memorials may be left to a Catholic Charity of the donor’s choice; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Services by Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay Frontenac, KS.

Charles F. “Bud" Smith
Charles F. “Bud" Smith, 80, of Frontenac, died November 5, 2011at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg. He was born March 27, 1931 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Harry W and Drucilla (Hallam) Smith. He attended public schools in Pittsburg until joining the U.S. Navy in 1948where he proudly served his county for over 30 years. On April 14, 1952 he was united in marriage to Charlene Ann Nenno in Yuma, AZ, she survives him of the home. Bud was an auto mechanic and worked for several dealerships including A&B Motors and Pitzer Chevrolet. Additional survivors include two daughters: Linda Marie Piccini and husband Phil and Melody A. Smith-Pugh and husband Larry, all of Pittsburg, a son Charles “Jeff” Smith and wife Rhonda of Lockwood, MO, five brothers, three sisters, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. Graveside services will be 10 am Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Garden of Memories cemetery with Rev. C.L. Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow. Friends and Family are requested to meet at the funeral home to follow in procession to the cemetery; the procession will leave the funeral home at 9:45 am. Family will receive friends from 7-8pm Tuesday at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac. Services and arrangements are under the direction of the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay Frontenac, KS.

Wilhelmina “Wilma” M. (Pichler) Cicero
Wilhelmina “Wilma” M. (Pichler) Cicero, 91, of Pittsburg formerly of Frontenac died at 9:37 a.m. Monday November 7, 2011 at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac. She was born April 26, 1920 in Yale, KS the daughter of Charles and Anna Frances (Rehak) Pichler. She grew up in Camp 50 and was a 1938 graduate of Frontenac High School. Wilma married Joseph “Jack” Cicero on July 23, 1938 in Lamar, MO; he preceded her in death on March 29, 2005. She worked for several years for her mother’s restaurant Chicken Annie’s. Wilma was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, the Sacred Heart Altar Society and the Frontenac Eagles. Survivors include her son Richard Cicero of Pittsburg; a granddaughter Renee Cicero a grandson Rick Cicero, 4 Great-grandchildren Cody, Damian, Anna and Amanda Cicero. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Joette Cadden, a brother Carl Pichler, two sisters- Louella Lipoglav and Anna Irene Pichler, sister-in-law Rosemary Pichler and a daughter-in-law Roberta Cicero. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac with Father Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac where friends may call after noon on Thursday. Memorial contributions can be made to Harry Hynes Hospice. Memorials may be brought by or mailed to the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay/P.O. Box 907 Frontenac, KS 66763.

Doris J. Friskel
FRONTENAC, KS – Doris J. Friskel, 85, of Frontenac, KS, died at 11:17 am, Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS after an illness. She was born August 22, 1926 in Weir, KS the daughter of Archie and Lillian Sutton Gillenwater. She was reared in the Weir and Columbus, KS area, moving to Pittsburg, KS where she attended Pittsburg High School her senior year. She later received her nursing degree from Mt. Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg. She married Joseph W. Friskel on November 27, 1948 in Frontenac, KS and he preceded her in death on December 20, 1984. Doris and Joe reared six children together and after Joe’s death, Doris continued to be a helpful, loving and caring mother and grandmother. Doris worked as a nurse prior to her marriage. Membership was held in Scared Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, Kansas. Survivors include one daughter Clare Friskel Dyas and her husband John of Bentonville, Arkansas; 4 sons Dan Friskel of Chickasha, OK; Mike Friskel of Pittsburg; Jim Friskel of Woodstock, NY; and Joe Friskel of Frontenac, KS; one brother Don Gillenwater of Wichita, KS; 9 grandchildren including Anissa Alcorn of Oklahoma; Jennifer Watts and husband Aaron of Frontenac; Codie Ryan and husband Daniel of Arkansas; Carly Dyas of Arkansas; Joshua Friskel of New York; Alexis Friskel and Andrew Roberts of New York; Nick Friskel of Florida; Emma Friskel of Frontenac and Myles Friskel of Hawaii. Seven great-grandchildren including Nikki McMillan of Kansas; Kaley Johns of Oklahoma; A. J. Watts of Frontenac; Daniel Watts of Frontenac; Cori Watts of Frontenac; Paul Merino of Arkansas; and Iona June Friskel Roberts of New York. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one son Tim Friskel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, with Father Thomas Stroot, as celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel cemetery in Frontenac, KS. The parish rosary will be recited at 7 pm Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac, KS. The family will receive their friends after the rosary service at the funeral home. Friends may call anytime after 2 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mary Floretta Romanzi
Mary Floretta Romanzi, 101, of Topeka, passed away Sunday November 13, 2011. She lived in Capaldo, Kansas most of her life and in 2008 she moved to Topeka to live with her daughter. In June of this year she moved to nursing care at Plaza West Health Center. She was born September 23, 1910 in Daisy Hill, Kansas to John Albert Johnson and Sara Johnson. She was a homemaker, a member of the Frontenac United Methodist Church, a member of Electa Chapter #23 O.E.S. Girard, The Frontenac Eagles Auxiliary and attended several senior citizen centers in the area. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfredo Romanzi, her parents, three sisters, three brothers and one grandson Rick Starkey. Survivors include her daughter, Dora Starkey, five grandchildren Joe (Darlene) Starkey, Alamagordo, NM, Steve Starkey, Linda (Bernie) Trompeter, Jim (Sherlyn) Starkey and Jack Starkey all of Topeka. Eight great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday November 18, 2011 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac with Reverend Dennis Paschke officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time on Friday. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Friday. Memorial contributions can be made to the Frontenac United Methodist Church, memorials may be brought by or mailed to the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay/P.O. Box 907 Frontenac, KS 66763.

Mary L. Morey
Mary L. Morey, 77, of McCune died Thursday December 8, 2011 at her home in McCune. She was born April 20, 1934 in Cherokee, KS the daughter of Alex and Georgia (Hartman) Nevin. She had been a resident of the McCune area since 1969 moving from Parsons. Mary married E. Jean Morey on April 25, 1952 in Girard, KS; he survives at the home. She worked for over 20 years for the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons as a Quality Control Inspector. She and her husband were also the owner/operators of the Morey Grocery Store in McCune from 1969 to 1979. Mary was a member of the United Methodist Church in McCune and the Ladies of Lions also in McCune. Survivors include her husband E. Jean of the home; four sons Daniel R. Morey of Oklahoma City, OK, Larry D. Morey of Strafford, MO, Ellick J. Morey of Rogers, AR and Brian D. Morey of Marshall, TX; a sister Dora Jean Coyan of Topeka; 7 Grandchildren-Adam Morey, Jarod Morey, Daniel C. Morey, Brandy Power, Andrea Johncox, Jessica Nelson and Anastasia Jones and 9 Great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers Bob, Don and Bill Nevin a sister Betty LaSota and a grandson Joshua Cade Morey. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday December 16, 2011 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac with Reverend Linda Eads officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time on Friday. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the McCune City Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the McCune/Osage Township Library. Memorials may be brought by or mailed to the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E McKay/P.O. Box 907 Frontenac, KS 66763.

Robert A. Graham
Robert A. Graham, 73, of Frontenac, KS died 4:50pm Thursday December 22, 2011 at his home following an illness. Robert passed away with his family and friends at his bedside after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born October 11, 1938 in Dakota City, NE to Hazel Conture and Stanley Graham where he attended elementary and high school. Robert graduated college from Wayne State with a Teaching Degree. Robert married Ruth Dougherty in 1959 and had four sons, Randy, Troy, Wes and Stephen. In his career he wore many hats; he started as a teacher and this career took him many places such as Beemer, NE, Dubque, IA, McCook, NE, Minot, N.D., Nehawka, NE and Frontenac, KS. During his tenure as a teacher he taught history, was a principal, helped in implementing Job Corps in McCook, NE. From there he spent time in Vietnam for a year. When returning to the states he took the position of the Chief of Education Department in Minot, ND and then Nehawka, NE. Next he was an owner of Shields Adult Care in Pittsburg, KS. Robert was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Graham and son Randy Graham. Robert was survived by his wife Marilyn and sons Troy, Wes and Steve. Along with his sister Frances Tootie Bray and sixteen grandchildren. Robert was very much a family oriented and a people person as shown by his choice of jobs over his lifetime and he will greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral Services are pending in South Sioux City, NE. Visitation will be from 6-7pm Monday December 26, 2011 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac, KS. Friends may call after 12pm Monday. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Via Christ Cancer Center. Arrangements are by Friskel Funeral Home of Frontenac, KS.

Mary E. Weisbaum
Mary E. Weisbaum, 104 of Frontenac, KS, died at 10:45pm, Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Sunset Manor in Frontenac. She was born July 21, 1907 in Frontenac the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Rozman) Kreus. On February 3, 1932 she was united in marriage to Ned Weisbaum in Chicago, IL he preceded her in death on March 24, 1963. Mary owned and operated the Elm Hand Laundry in Evanston, IL for many years along side her husband. In 1962 the couple retired and moved back to Frontenac. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. For many years she was an avid bowler joining several leagues and winning numerous trophies. Survivors include three nephews: Jack A. Druart of Frontenac, Carl J. Druart of Chanute, KS and Richard Weisbaum of Sedona, AZ; two nieces: Joyce Ann Kreus of Las Vegas, NV and Norma Jean Shsra of Chicago, IL; along with many great, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister Rose Druart and four brothers: Tony, Jack, Joseph and Johnny Kreus. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Monday, January 2, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Stroot as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 10:10 am at the church before the services. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 am, until the rosary begins. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel cemetery Endowment Fund; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Services by Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay, Frontenac, KS 66763.

Lorraine G. Sponsel
Lorraine G. Sponsel, 85 of Carthage, MO formerly of the Pittsburg/Frontenac area died at 4 p.m. Sunday January 22, 2012 at the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO. She was born February 26, 1926 in Ledgerwood, ND the daughter of Charles and Della (Kotchian) Havlena. She has lived in the Carthage area for the past 4 years moving from Frontenac. Lorraine married Lee Sponsel on August 22, 1947 in Carson City, NV; he survives at the home. She currently was a member of the St. Ann ’s Catholic Church in Carthage, was a past member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac and also Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg. Survivors include her husband Lee of the home; four sons Gary Sponsel of Carthage, MO, Neil Sponsel of Newark, CA, Jeff Sponsel of Carthage, MO and Pat Sponsel of Pittsburg; 10 Grandchildren and 4 Great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Daryl Sponsel and 4 sisters Beatrice, Mildred, Alvina and Marcy. According to her wishes Lorraine has been taken for cremation. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday January 26, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac with Father Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the Mount Carmel Cemetery. The parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac. Arrangements are under the direction of the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay Frontenac.
