PITTSBURG — Tena C. Swank, 89 of Pittsburg, KS, formerly of Frontenac, KS, died at 2:59 p.m., Thursday, July 1, 2010, at Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg, KS. Tena was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Frontenac, KS to Joseph and Isabella (Piraro) Cicero. She attended schools in Frontenac, graduating from Frontenac High School. On March 29, 1947, in Columbus, KS, she married Cyrus James Swank. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1988. Tena was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Frontenac, KS where she was very active in the Altar Society. She also belonged to the Senior Citizens group and also a Red Hat Society member. She was active in shaping lives at Via Christi Cornerstone Pittsburg where she was a resident. Tena was preceded in death by her parents; son Robert Spragg; brothers Vincent and D.J. Saia and Charles, Jack and Sam Cicero; sister Mary Hulson; granddaughter Christine Spragg; grandson Brian Spragg and two great granddaughters. Survivors include her daughters Carolyn Marquez (Sal) of Frontenac, KS and Jamie Hausher of Houston, TX along with 9 grandchildren Doug Girth (Rita) of Frontenac, Teena Lero of Olathe, KS, Dana Curtiss (Paul) of Overland Park, KS, Peter and Daniel Hausher both of Norman, OK, Kim Spragg of Carl Junction, MO, Lisa Hulse of Liberal, MO, Heather Reed of Topeka, KS and Bobby Spragg of Weir, KS along with 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and sister-in-law Wilma Cicero of Frontenac, KS. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS with Fr. Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Graveside services will follow in the GAR cemetery in Miami, Oklahoma at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7-8pm on Tuesday at Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay St, P.O. Box #907, Frontenac, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00pm. Friends may call the funeral home after 3pm on Tuesday. The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to Via Christi Cornerstone Activity Fund. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

Harry E. Cerne
FRONTENAC — Harry E. Cerne, 94 of Frontenac, KS died at 4:54pm, Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg, KS. Harry was born February 21, 1916, in Breezy Hill, KS to John and Katherine (Pintar) Cerne. He attended schools in Arma. On September 5, 1942 he married Marie E. Lenassi, in Waynesville, MO. She survives of the home. Harry owned and operated Harry’s Cafe in Arma, KS from the late 1940’s through the mid 1950’s. He worked for McNally as a machinist. He later worked for Dickey Clay in Pittsburg, as a machinist until his retirement. Harry served his country in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on September 5, 1945 as a Sergeant. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac. He belonged to the SNPJ Lodge #225. He was also very active in the Arma American Legion #182 and the Kansas American Legion. Harry was an avid organic gardener. He was an inventor, even having a patent for one of his inventions. In the winters he assembled French cookie irons for a local business. Additional survivors include his daughter Kathleen Cerne of Frontenac, KS, along with three grandchildren. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, son Harold C. Cerne, brothers William, Albert, Charles, Fred and John Cerne, sisters Rose Ann and Mary Cerne and Velma Rank. Funeral services will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay St., P.O. Box 907 in Frontenac, KS with Fr. Robert Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, where the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post# 64 of Pittsburg will have flag folding ceremonies. The family will receive friends from 7-8pm on Tuesday at Friskel Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00pm. The casket will remain closed. The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the Wesley House. Friends may drop off or mail memorials to the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac, KS.

Irene Margaret Davis
Irene Margaret Davis, 90 of Pittsburg, passed away on Wednesday July 21, 2010 at the Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg, Kansas. She had resided at Cornerstone Village since December of 2008. She enjoyed her new home and met many new friends. She loved all of her nurses & aides who took great care of her. She was born June 30, 1920, in Verona, MO the daughter of Arthur and Grace (Devine) Yaeger. She came to Chicopee, KS in a covered wagon with her favorite pet, a dog named Sport. Irene attended Cherokee Community High School, graduating in 1939. She married her high school sweetheart, Harry E. Davis, Jr. on January 13, 1940. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1988. Irene was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was her whole life and they all meant the world to her. Irene was a member of the First Christian Church; 21st Century Sunday school class; Disciple Women’s Fellowship; American Legion Auxiliary and Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include four children; Harry Dean Davis and wife Elizabeth of Crown Point, IN; Joyce A. Holland of Pittsburg; Linda S. Terdin and husband Don of Frontenac, KS and John H. Davis and wife Cathy of Ocala, FL. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren; Bob Holland and wife Vicki of Pittsburg; Marilyn Wood and husband Jamie of Hawaii; Tonya Harris and husband James of Frontenac; Tammy Shepherd of Pittsburg; Matt Davis of South Bend, IN; Kirk Davis and wife Alexis of Plymouth, IN; Tricia Smith of Crown Point, IN; Perry Davis and Diana of Ocala, FL; Angie & Joe Stevenson of Jacksonville, FL. She also has 19 great-grandchildren that were her pride and joy. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday July 23 at the Friskel Funeral in Frontenac with Reverend Kevin Arensman officiating. Burial will follow in the Frontenac City Cemetery. Order of the Eastern Star Rites will be conducted by the Rob Morris Chapter #74 Pittsburg at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home family will receive friends following the rites until service time. Friends and family may call at the home of Joyce Holland 1302 E. 11th in Pittsburg. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Christian Church or to the American Cancer Society. Betty L. Page
PITTSBURG — Betty L. Page, 85, of Pittsburg, KS died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg. She was born February 10, 1925 in Tulsa, OK the daughter of Noble R. and Edna L. (Tappana) Dilling. She attended school in Tulsa and graduated from the Wichita East High School. On May 24, 1942 she was united in marriage to Marvin Page in Wichita; he preceded her in death on September 14, 2005. Betty worked for Pitt Plastic Manufacturing Company for over 20 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Pittsburg and a member of the Frontenac American Legion Aux Post #43 for more than 20 years. Survivors include 2 chosen daughters Connie McAllister and Evelyn Woodrum both of Pittsburg; a daughter-in-law Debra Page of Johnstown, CO; a sister Delores Marlena of Petaluma, CA, along with 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Denise Page and son Dwayne Page. Memorial services will be 9:30 am, Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac with Rev. Dan Moss officiating. Inurnment of Cremains will follow at the National cemetery in Ft. Scott, KS. Family will receive friends from 6-8 Monday at the Friskel Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Connie Kay Cummins
Connie Kay Cummins, 67, of Pittsburg passed away at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg. She fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. Connie was born July 18, 1943 in Pittsburg. She attended school in Pittsburg, KS and Chicago, IL. She married Winford Doil Cummins on November 26, 1960 in Miami, OK; they would have been married 50 years in November. Connie was employed by Interlocal #637 as a paraeducator at Pittsburg Middle School. She loved her work and made many friendships there. She was a wonderful wife; mother; nana; daughter; sister and was loved by all. She was also Elvis’s biggest fan. Survivors include husband Winford “Doil” of the home, daughter Kellie McCully and husband Marc, “Nana’s girls” Mollie Jo & Chloe Anne of Frontenac, two sons Doil Cummins of Pittsburg and his children Brandi & Dillon, and Todd Cummins of Pittsburg and his children Christen & Kaley, mother Evelyn Kotzman of Frontenac, two sisters Cyndi Kotzman of Neosho, MO, Lucinda Turner and husband Tim “mister sister” of Hutchison, KS, a niece Shana Turner of McPherson, two brothers Jim Bolinger and wife Kay of Mulvane, Kurt Kotzman and wife Angela of Frontenac, along with many nieces and nephews, and a very special friend Bebe Schaeffer of Neosho, MO. She was preceded in death by her father John Kotzman, grandmother & grandfather Josephine and Thomas Kelly and brother John Kotzman II. Celebration of Life services will be 7 pm, Monday, September 13, 2010 at the Friskel Funeral Home. Memorials may be left to the Via Christi Cancer Center; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Services and arrangements are under the direction of the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. Mary Jane Garbin
Mary Jane Garbin, 60 of Girard, KS died at 8:43 am, September 10, 2010 at the Landmark Hospital in Joplin, MO following a long illness. She was born June 25, 1950 in Pratt, KS the daughter of Delmar and Velma (Daniels) Stewart. On April 11, 1968 she was united in marriage to Dennis Garbin in Girard, KS; he survives at the home. She graduated from Girard in 1969, and received her LPN from Fort Scott Community College. She worked for Dr. Jim Wilkins for 13 years. She then started working for the State of Missouri, Division of Aging in 1997. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in rural Girard. Additional survivors include two sons: Shane Garbin of Lenexa, KS, Shawn Garbin of Girard, a daughter Sally Lamkins of Girard; three brothers Dick Collins, Nova Collins and Ray Stewart, a sister Susanne Plotner; eight grandchildren Nicole DeBusk, Jordan Garbin, Reiley Garbin, Adam Garbin, Noah Garbin, Ashley Garbin, Syanna Lamkins, Carson Lamkins, and Caleb Lamkins, two great grandchildren, Alexis Garbin and Laya DeBusk. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Robert Collins. Funeral services will be 11am Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Ernie Watson officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Center Cemetery. Family will receive friends before service time at the church starting at 10am. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Youth Group; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home or the church. Services and arrangements by the Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay, Frontenac, KS 66763.

M. Lorene Holliday
M. Lorene Holliday, 89 of Frontenac died at 5:15 a.m. Friday September 17, 2010 at the Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg. She was born March 28, 1921 in Cherryvale, KS the daughter of Luther and Sarah (Osborn) Benham. She lived in Cherryvale for 36 years moving to the Pittsburg/Frontenac area were she was currently residing. Lorene was a 1939 graduate of Cherryvale High School and attended 2 years at Pittsburg State University. She married Bob Holliday in 1939 in Cherryvale, KS; he preceded her in death in 1980. Lorene worked for the Census Bureau for nearly 19 years as a clerk/typist; she retired in 1983. She was a member of the Frontenac United Methodist Church, AARP and the National Association of Federal Employees. Survivors include three daughters-Jayne Ortolani of Coffeyville; Bobbye Lavery and husband Bob of Plano, TX, Cindy Stefanoni and husband Bob of Frontenac, KS; 6 Grandchildren Brent Ortolani and partner Steve, Scott Ortolani and wife Jeni, Melissa Rose and husband Brian, Jennifer Knaup and husband Ryan, Brad Stefanoni and wife Andra, Angie Troutman and husband Jon; 10 Great-grandchildren and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a granddaughter Shelly Ortolani and two sisters Olive Hummel and Mildred Pomrenke. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday September 19, 2010 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac with Reverend Dennis Paschke officiating. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Sunday prior to the services. Inurnment of cremains will take place at a later date at the Cherryvale City Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Southeast Kansas Humane Society. Memorials may be brought by or mailed to the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay or P.O. Box 907 Frontenac, KS 66763.

Mary Lou Sturgeon
Mary Lou Sturgeon, 79 of Girard, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born April 15, 1931, in Girard to Sherman and Ruth (Shea) Salyer. On May 23, 1948, she was united in marriage to James D. Sturgeon in Girard. He survives of the home. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Girard, Girl Scouts, Rainbow girls, Order of the Eastern Star, & the Girard American Legion Auxiliary. Additional survivors include her two daughters, Cheryl Sue Correll and husband Bill of Girard, Sharon Willauer and husband Fran of Lake Wales, FL; 4 Grandchildren, Aaron Coester of Girard, Brigette & Sibyl Willauer, and Debra Renne Pugliese all of Florida.; 7 Great-grandchildren, and special friends, Kenny, Sue, & Dustin Coester. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, James D Sturgeon III. Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Friskel Funeral Chapel in Frontenac with Reverend Bud Clapp officiating. Family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Memorials may be left to the Girard American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Adele (Della) M. Mussat
FRONTENAC — Adele (Della) M. Mussat, 88 of Frontenac died at 11:26 p.m. Sunday October 3, 2010 at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac, KS. She was born December 26, 1921 in Frontenac, KS the daughter of David and Mary (Lispi) Tassi. She was a lifetime resident of Frontenac; she attended Frontenac Schools. Della married James Mussat on December 8, 1945 in Girard, KS; he preceded her in death on December 6, 1975. She worked as an Aide for Sunset Manor Nursing Home when they opened in 1967. Della took care of her father and brothers beginning at the age of 14. Della was of the Catholic Faith; a member of the Frontenac American Legion Auxiliary and was instrumental in starting the Frontenac Homecoming.
Survivors include two daughters Patricia Clinton and husband Chuck of Frontenac, Mary Maendele of Frontenac; three grandchildren James Clinton and wife Tammy, C.R. Clinton and fiancé Darcy, Shelia Kroenke and husband Keith and ten Great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son-in-law Mike Maendele, six brothers Frank, Fred, Sergio, Mudero, Guido and Veto Tassi. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday October 6, 2010 at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Pittsburg with Reverend Mark Wenzelburger officiating. Friends and family are requested to meet at the cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Friends may call at the home of Pat and Chuck Clinton at 506 S. Mt. Carmel Rd. in Frontenac. Memorial contributions can be made to the Frontenac Community Recreational Center, memorials may be brought by or mailed to the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay/P.O. Pauline (Cressent) Silc
Pauline (Cressent) Silc, 92, of Mulvane, KS, formerly of Girard, KS, died at 2:40 p.m. Thursday July 9, 2010 at the Villa Maria Nursing Facility in Mulvane, KS. She was born December 20, 1917 in Arma, KS the daughter of John and Eva (Lefevre) Cressent. She was a 1935 graduate of Arma High School. Pauline married John P. Silc on November 9, 1938 in Pittsburg, KS; he preceded her in death on April 18, 2001. She was a homemaker: and a member of the Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Girard. Survivors include three daughters Linda Daniel of Urbana, IL; Yvette Murtha of Derby, KS; Treva Nichols of Norwich, KS; 10 grandchildren; 9 Great-grandchildren and a 10th on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Philip Donald Silc, a brother Alexander “Alex” Cressent a sister Lucille Elizabeth and a granddaughter Tracy Lynn Tate. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday July 14th at the Saint Michaels Catholic Church in Girard with Father Carney as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories cemetery in Pittsburg. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church in Girard where the parish rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. following the visitation. Memorial contributions can be made to the Southeast Kansas Humane Society. Memorials may be brought by or mailed to the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay or P.O. Box 907 Frontenac, KS 66763.
