Daniel Raymond “BA” Bridwell
Daniel Raymond “BA” Bridwell, 60 of Frontenac, KS died at 2:49pm, Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Via Christi Hospital of Pittsburg, KS. BA was born January 20, 1950 in Pittsburg, KS to Wilford P. “Bob” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Tomaney) Bridwell. He attended area schools, graduating from Frontenac High School. He later attended Kansas State Teachers College. On May 30, 1970 in Pittsburg, KS, he married Deborah Kay Kabonic. She survives of the home. BA worked as a social worker for a few years. Followed by 25 years of service at the Kansas City Southern Railroad, after which he opened the indoor Diamond 6-D horse arena. BA was of the Catholic faith. He belonged to the American Quarter Horse Association. He currently was serving on the City Council for Frontenac. He was an avid Frontenac Raider fan and supporter. He was an avid golfer. He loved horses and ran Diamond 6-D arena, where he listened to and played music with his friends. Diamond Dan or BA, as he was known to many area children. Additional survivors include his daughter Danna Carson and husband Erik of Overland Park, KS; sons Doug Bridwell and wife Dana of Cheney, KS, Darrin Bridwell and wife Tara of Frontenac, KS and Dennis Bridwell and Amy of Frontenac; brother Jim Bridwell and wife Reva of Frontenac, KS; along with 11 grandchildren he cherished, Sage, Gage, Devon, Erika, Carter, Malori, Alivia, J.D., Cale, Makena and Jaxon. BA was preceded in death by his parents, Sister Jeanne Dayton, brothers Robert “Bob” and William “Bill” Bridwell; in-laws Mabel and Kenneth Kabonic. Funeral services will 11am, Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Frontenac United Methodist Church with Pastor Dennis Paschke and Fr. Thomas Stroot co-officiating. After the funeral service the family will receive friends at the Diamond 6-D arena. Private family inurnment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6-9pm on Friday at Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay St, where a rosary will be recited at 6:00pm. Friends may call the funeral home after 4pm on Friday. The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to Daniel R. “BA” Bridwell Scholarship fund. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay St, P.O. Box #907, Frontenac, KS.

Leon H. Jursche
Leon H. Jursche, 90, of Frontenac died at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday May 25, 2010 at the Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg. He was born June 29, 1919 at Ringo, KS to Pongrac and Mary Jursche. Leon graduated from Frontenac High School in 1937 and received hi BS, MS and Specialist degrees from Pittsburg State University. He spent 37 years in the field of education as a business teacher, coach and administrator. He taught in Arcadia, McCune, Parsons and Frontenac High Schools. On July 17, 1942 he married Marie Rudolph at Ocean View, VA. He was a member of the Frontenac United Methodist Church, Frontenac American Legion, Pittsburg State University Alumni Association, Masonic Lodge No. 187 Pittsburg, York Rite Bodies Girard, Mirza Shrine and Order of the Eastern Star. He was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the United States Navy from 1942-1945. In addition to his wife his is survived by a niece Frieda Brigs of Albuquerque, NM; a nephew Donald J. Morettini of Pleasanton, CA. He was preceded in death by his daughter JoAnne, his parents, sisters Ann Lincoln, Mary Statham and Elizabeth Morettini. According to his wishes Leon has been taken for cremation. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Frontenac Education Foundation or the Frontenac United Methodist Church. Memorials may be brought by or mailed to the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay/P.O. Pauline Walker
Pauline Walker, 89, of Frontenac, KS died at 6:39pm, Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Sunset Manor Nursing Home. Pauline was born February 22, 1921 in Almartha, MO to George Russell and Lora Maggie (James) Mefford. She had 8 siblings, three sisters Auda, Eulah and Beulah and five brothers including her twin brother Paul, Edward, Troy, Hadley and Ted. She married Homer Walker on June 10, 1940 in Ava, MO. They were married almost 57 years. Homer passed away February 14, 1997. They had three children: Joe Gwin, Lora Sue and Nancy Ellice. They lived in St. John, KS, Parsons, KS and Chanute, KS. After being in Chanute for around 20 years, the family moved to Pittsburg in 1968 and was in the Pittsburg/Frontenac area for the remainder of her life. After moving to Pittsburg, Pauline worked for Medicalodge beginning in January 1969. She started as a nurse aide at Golden Age Lodge #2 which she helped move the residents to what is now Medicalodge South. In 1978 she became a Certified Medication Aide and continued until her retirement in 1988. She was noted by residents and staff alike to give loving care to all. She is survived by two children, Joe Gwin Walker and wife Vida of Topeka, KS and Nancy E. Clinton and husband Tony of Frontenac, KS; brothers Paul Mefford of Sparta, MO and Edward Mefford of Springfield, MO; along with seven grandchildren Rusty and Randy Walker of Topeka, KS, Danny Manly and Debby Manly Lohse of Wamego, KS, Rob Clinton of Pittsburg, KS, Julie Clinton and Jennifer Tolley of Frontenac, KS; along with 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Lora Sue Manly and son-in-law Skip Manly. Funeral services will be 1:30pm, Friday, June 4, 2010 at Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay St, P.O. Box #907, Frontenac, KS with Jerry Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories cemetery in rural Pittsburg, KS. The family will receive friends from 7-8pm on Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may call the funeral home after 4pm on Thursday. The family suggest expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the Church of Christ of Pittsburg and/or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Friskel Funeral Home of Frontenac, KS.

Elizabeth Pacconi
Elizabeth Pacconi, 103, of Frontenac, KS died Wednesday June 9, 2010 at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac, KS following a short illness. Elizabeth was born July 22, 19 06 in Chicopee, Kansas the daughter of Antone and Marguerite (Anselmino) Ortaldo. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended area schools in Capaldo. On January 9, 19 32 she married Ugo Pacconi at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS; he preceded her in death on September 19, 19 66. Elizabeth was a homemaker. She a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS and a former member of the Altar Society, an avid quilter, loved flowers, gardening and most of all her family. Survivors include her daughter Betty Grant of Frontenac, KS; sister Josephine Iussig of Chicago, IL; 3 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son in-law James B. Grant, 2 brothers and 5 sisters. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10am Saturday June 12, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS with Fr. Robert Spencer as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Highland Park cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. Rosary will be recited at 7pm Friday June 11, 2010 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac, KS. Family will receive friends immediately following the rosary. Friends may call the funeral home after 2pm on Friday. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to Harry Hynes Hospice or Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friends may drop off or mail memorials to Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay Frontenac, KS 66763. Arrangements are under the direction of Friskel Funeral Home of Frontenac, KS.

Betty L. Serra
Betty L. Serra, 84, of Pittsburg, KS died 12:30am Sunday June 13, 2010 at Sunset Manor Nursing Home following a short illness. Betty was born November 21, 1925 in Prague, OK to William and Mildred (Schima) Floyd. She graduated from Prague High School in 1943. She moved to this community in 1950. She married George B. Sothern in 1944; he preceded her in death in February of 1973. She later married Frank Serra in June of 1976; he preceded her in death in March of 1989. Betty worked as a credit manager for many area businesses but most notably Montgomery Ward in Pittsburg, KS. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, KS. She was also active in Bridge Club. Survivors include her daughter Linda Sipes of Frontenac, KS; granddaughters Stacey Shupert and husband Ed of Overland Park, KS and Nicole Sipes of Joplin, MO; great-grandchildren John Benjamin Shupert and Jack Thomas Shupert. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Funeral Services will be 10:30am Wednesday June 16, 2010 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac, KS with Rev. Verl Strong officiating. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the Grace United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, KS. Memorials may be dropped off or mailed to Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay Frontenac, KS 66763. Arrangements are by Friskel Funeral Home of Frontenac, KS.

Michael Angelo DeCastro
Michael Angelo DeCastro, 100, of Berryton, KS, formerly of Frontenac, KS died at 5:47pm, Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at St. Frances Hospital in Topeka, KS. Mike was born May 3, 1909 in Frontenac, KS to Fortunato and Maria (Baudino) DeCastro. He attended area schools. He later went through the American School of Correspondence and got his Mechanical Engineering Degree. On May 9, 1931, in Frontenac, KS, he married Elizabeth “Lisa” Giacobetti. She preceded him in death on July 12, 2003. Mike and his wife owned and operated the Frontenac Clothing Store from 1947 till 1998. He also worked as a designing engineer at McNally’s Manufacturing for 47 years retiring in 1983. He was a licensed architect designing the Sacred Heart Elementary School in Frontenac and the Frontenac High School Gymnasium and football field. Mike was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, where he belonged to the Commodore Barry General Assembly Council #0294 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He was an Eagles member and belonged to the Frontenac Lions Club. He was a charter board member of Centennial Life Inc Co. He served on the Commerce Bank board and on the Frontenac city council in the early 1960’s. Survivors include his daughters Phyllis Marie DeCastro-Sloan of Topeka, KS; Joyce Volmut of Topeka, KS; Bette Snoddy and her husband Ron of Berryton, KS and Anna Potter of Orangevale, CA; a sister Erma Kahn of Baton Rouge, LA; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Jennie Nolan and Angelina Cannaday, Brother Joe DeCastro, step-grandson and nephew. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30am, Monday, August 31, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS with Fr. Bob Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Sunday, where a rosary will be recited at 7pm. Honor guards by the Commodore Barry General Assembly Council #0294 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Masses. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. Gladys M. Appino
Gladys M. Appino, 89, of Frontenac died at 6:08 am Tuesday, September 08, 2009 at the Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center. She was born March 12, 1920 in Englevale, KS the daughter of Thomas and Pearl (Karns) Dawson. On June 29, 1941 she was united in marriage to Joseph A. Appino in Olathe, KS; he preceded her in death on June 30, 1992. Gladys and Joseph were the owners of Appino TV and Radio Service for many years where she worked as the secretary and bookkeeper. She was a lifetime area resident and was a member of the Frontenac American Legion Ladies Auxiliary #43. Survivors include a son Robert J. and wife Susan Appino of Garland, TX; daughter Sharen and husband Bill Nichols of Round Rock, TX; Sister Aleen Garrison of Pittsburg; four grandchildren: Austin and Jason Appino of Dallas, TX, Douglas and his wife Holly Nichols of Wichita, KS and Christina Nichols of Austin, TX; five great grandchildren: Jack, Nate, Eli, Antonio and Calvin. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Brother William Dawson, five sisters: Dorothy Pugh, Helen Bean, Jean Volz, Norma Brown and Goldie Morrell. Graveside services will be 10 am Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Mt. Carmel cemetery in Frontenac with Chaplin Mark Stewart officiating. Burial will follow. Friends are requested to meet at the cemetery for the services. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 pm on Friday. Friends may also call at the funeral home at their convenience on Friday after 9 am. Memorials may be left to the Frontenac American Legion Auxiliary #43. These may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Services are under the direction of the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay, P.O. Box 907, Frontenac, KS 66763.

Wilma L. Lavery
FRONTENAC — Wilma L. Lavery, 84, of Frontenac died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday June 22, 2010 at the Girard Medical Center. She was born April 16, 1926 in Pittsburg, KS the daughter of George and Susie (Steepleton) Benner. She was raised in Pittsburg and attended Pittsburg schools. She and her family moved to Frontenac in 1953. Wilma married Joseph O. Lavery on September 11, 1947 in Chicopee, KS; he preceded her in death on June 29, 1996. She was a homemaker, a member of the Sacred Heath Catholic Church, the Frontenac Eagles Auxiliary and the Frontenac American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include 2 daughters Janice Sighel of Frontenac, Donna Cronister of Pittsburg; 3 sons Robert (Bob) Lavery of Dallas, TX, Steve Lavery of Shreveport, LA, Dennis Lavery of Frontenac, KS; a brother Eugene Benner of Hutchinson, KS; 12 Grandchildren and 15 Great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 9 brothers, 1 sister and a grandson Tony Sighel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday June 25, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac with Father Robert Spencer as celebrant; burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac where the family will receive friends following until 8 p.m. Friends may call the funeral home after 4 p.m. Thursday. The family will be at the home of son and daughter-in-law Dennis and Connie Lavery, 216 W. Leighton in Frontenac. Memorial contributions can be made to the Tony Sighel Scholarship Fund. Memorials may be left at or mailed to the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay/P.O. Box 907 Frontenac, KS 66763.

Frank M. Tunis
INDEPENDENCE, MO - Frank M. Tunis, 79, of Independence, MO passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at a Kansas City Hospital. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM Friday, June 25 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence. A second visitation will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 26 with services beginning at 11:00 AM at Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay, Frontenac, KS with burial at the Garden of Memories in Pittsburg, KS. The family suggests contributions be made to either the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. Frank was born July 25, 1930 to Sam and Katie (Carpino Turko) Tunis in Croweburg, KS and was baptized into the Catholic Church. He graduated from Mulberry High School in 1945 at the age of 14 and went on to work various jobs. He eventually became a welder and retired from Allis Chalmers Agco in 1993 after 34 years of service. Frank married Christena Manning on June 22, 1958 at the Nashville Christian Church in Nashville, MO. Together they have called Independence home for 47 years. Frank was a member of the Kansas City Moose Lodge #10, Sugar Creek Fraternal Order of Eagles #3717, and a retired member of the Steel Workers Local Union #1959. He was an avid gardener and country music fan. Also an avid sports fan, he had been signed to the St. Louis Browns, a minor league baseball team, although he did not go. Frank will be missed by all who knew and loved him including his wife of 52 years, Christena Tunis of the home; nephews Sam Tunis of Frontenac, KS, Ted Tunis of Pittsburg, KS, David Tunis of Renton, WA; niece Donna Tunis of Pittsburg, KS; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Tunis and Anton Tunis; and niece Kathleen Depenbusch.
