Barney Ross

Services for retired U.S. Army Major Basil E. "Barney" Ross, 71, who died Dec. 5, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 9 at First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Fred Houston officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Kathy Waite, Hank Williams and Steve Butler were vocalists. Jim Lindsay played bagpipes. Special music was "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Last Mile of the Way."

Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons performed Masonic burial rites.

Members of the Headquarters-Headquarters Company, First Battalion, 13th Artillery, from Fort Riley performed military burial rites.

Honorary casket bearers were Tom, Wayne, David and Charles Ross, Gene Mask, John Thomas, Wayne Rush, Melvin and Keith Finuf, Price Heimer, Robert Ferris, Norman Hearn and Ben Holman.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Hospice Inc.

Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lee Calcote

Services for the Rev. Lee Russell Calcote, 78, who died Dec. 8, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 12 at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Victor L. Calcote officiated.

Burial was at 10:30 a.m. in Highland Cemetery.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist, and Sue Huffman was the pianist. Victor Calcote performed "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" and "He'll Understand and Say, 'Well Done!'" The congregation joined in "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" and "Hymn of Promise." Other music included "Amazing Grace," sung by Judy Collins, and "The Lord's Prayer," sung by Sister Janet Mead.

Honorary casket bearers were David and Denver Calcote. Casket bearers were Ron and Vic Calcote, Terry Eicher, Eric Gillock, Lance and Shane Mullen, Phil Reinking and Molly Roe.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and Epworth United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

May St. Clair

DEXTER - May Ethel St. Clair, 98, of Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter, died there Dec. 14, 1998.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Dexter. The Rev. Norman Reeves will officiate. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 p.m. today.

St. Clair was born May 19, 1900, on the Otoe Indian Reservation in Oklahoma to Charles Ward and Mollie Marie (Dunlap) Ballinger. She attended school in Arkansas City.

On April 5, 1927, she married Otis A. St. Clair in Wellington. He died Dec. 16, 1989.

St. Clair moved to Dexter in the 1950s and helped run the family gas station for many years while being a homemaker.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the White Shrine and was active in the First Christian Church in Dexter.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Myrta Shields

Myrta V. "Peggy" Shields, 67, of 511 E. 14th, Winfield, died Dec. 14, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Tisdale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials have been established with Home Health Care of William Newton Memorial Hospital and the Tisdale Fire Disaster Relief Fund. Contributions can be made at the church or funeral home.

Shields was born Feb. 7, 1931, in Winfield, to Charles and Irene (Iry) Warren. She was raised and educated in Winfield. As a young woman, she worked as a waitress here.

On Oct. 23, 1948, she married Eugene Earl Shields in Bernalillo, N.M. They made their home in California before returning to Winfield in 1949.

In 1954 Shields began working as a psychiatric aide at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. The Shieldses lived and farmed in the Winfield area for nearly 40 years. She retired in 1983 after 29 years of service at the hospital.

The Shieldses moved from Route 4 into Winfield in 1989. Her husband died Aug. 12, 1994.

Shields was a longtime member of Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Eugene Shields II, and two daughters, Edna Conrad and Peggy Bruce, all of Winfield; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Byron Van Cleave

Services for Byron Van Cleave, 25, who died Dec. 8, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center Cemetery. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated. Special vocal music was "Jesus Loves Me."

A memorial has been established with the Creative Community Living Endowment Fund.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

LaVeta Greeson

ARKANSAS CITY - LaVeta M. Hankins Greeson, 77, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 14, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Greeson was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Cedar Vale, to Fred and Elizabeth (Ellis) Hankins. She attended Cedar Vale schools, graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1939 and continued her education at Wichita Business College.

On Jan. 27, 1942, she married Jack Greeson in Parsons, where they made their home briefly before moving to Casper, Wyo. Greeson moved to Omaha, Neb., during World War II and lived there until she and her husband retired and moved to Kansas in 1982.

Survivors include her husband, J.L. "Jack" Greeson, Arkansas City; a son, Phil Greeson, Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Kathy Kasher, Omaha; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Edward Helmer

BURNS - Edward Helmer, 82, of Burns, died Dec. 14, 1998, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Burns United Methodist Church. Pastor Judy Priest will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Center Cemetery near Burns.

Friends may call at Petersen Funeral Home until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Association.

Helmer was born June 22, 1916, in Durham, to Martin and Susanna (Helmer) Helmer.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the 209th Coast Artillery in Germany, Africa, Italy and France.

On June 12, 1947, he married Ethel Kaufman in Moundridge.

He had farmed near Burns since 1951 and worked as a crane operator for Rhodes Construction for three years and as a school bus driver for the Peabody-Burns school for 15 years.

Helmer was a member of the Burns United Methodist Church and the American Legion of Peabody. He served on the board of directors of Butler Rural Electric Co. in El Dorado for 31 years.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Helmer, Burns; two sons, Burt Helmer, Mulvane, and Kevin Helmer, Potwin; two daughters, Kris Hayes-York, Winfield, and Julie Morrison, Newton; two sisters, Martha Yauk and Edith Rempel, both of Hillsboro; and six grandchildren.

Thurman Cook

INDEPENDENCE - Thurman E. Cook, 69, of Independence, formerly of Winfield, longtime school administrator, died Dec. 15, 1998, at Mercy Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church. The Revs. Ron Oldenettel and John Duran will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call at Potts Chapel, Pennsylvania at Maple, until 8 tonight, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday and at the church from noon until service time. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with Zion Lutheran Church. Contributions may be left at the church or the funeral home.

The family may be contacted at the Cook home, 301 N. 10th.

Cook was born Oct. 30, 1929, in Winfield, to E.W. and Bessie (Gill) Cook. He was raised and educated in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1948.

He received an associate of arts degree from St. John's College in 1952 and a bachelor of arts degree from Southwestern College in 1954. In 1962 he received a master's degree in education administration from Wichita State University. He also did postgraduate studies at Pittsburg State University, and Oklahoma State University.

On June 28, 1958, he married Dolly Cushman in Detroit, Mich.

Cook was an instructor at St. John's Academy and College, Winfield, from 1954 to 1960, when he became a teacher in Winfield public schools. In 1965 he became principal of the Winfield rural attendance centers.

In 1970 he became director of instructional services in the Montrose, Colo., school district. In 1972 he moved to Independence where he served as principal of Lincoln Elementary School until retiring in 1992. Cook served a total of 38 years in education, with 30 years in Kansas public schools. Following his retirement, he was associated with Potts Chapel for the past several years.

Cook was a member of the Kansas Association of Elementary School Principals, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, United School Administrators, Circle of Nineteen (District Administrators) and the Independence Administrators Association. He was named Outstanding Kansas Administrator of the Year during his tenure in the Independence schools.

He was also a member of many civic and religious organizations: the Neewollah Committee, Neewollah Kiddies Parade chairman and Neewollah Grand Parade assistant. A member of Zion Lutheran Church, he served as member and chairman of the board of elders and president of the congregation.

In Winfield he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as treasurer, member and chairman of the board of elders and secretary of the voters assembly.

Cook had served as a Community Chest representative, chairman of the Quivera Boy Scouts Fund Drive, PTA second vice president, treasurer of the Independence Arts Council, and board member of the Mercy Hospital Advisory Council, the Independence Housing Advisory and the Independence Community Concert Association.

Survivors include his wife, Dolly Cook, Independence; three sons, Theodore E. Cook Sr., Oakley, and Thomas P. Cook and Tobin M. Cook, both of Overland Park; a daughter, Traci D. Posch, Independence; a brother, Larry L. Cook, Neosho, Mo.; a sister, Janette J. Ragland, Goodman, Mo.; and 13 grandchildren.
