Thelma Hollis
OXFORD - Thelma Fae Hollis, 85, of Oxford, died Dec. 16, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home with the Rev. Curtis Fike officiating. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Oxford First Baptist Church.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 9 a.m. until the service.
Hollis was born May 9, 1913, in Oklahoma City, to Clark Doy and Myrtle Iona (Daniel) Pieratt.
On Aug. 29, 1933, she married Roy J. Hollis in Douglass. They had resided in Oxford since shortly after their marriage. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Her husband died April 15, 1998.
Survivors include a son, Merl Hollis, Wichita; a sister, Wanita Windsor, Fair Play, Mo.; and two grandchildren.
Carl Reeves
GRENOLA - Carl Edwin Reeves, 69, longtime resident of Grenola, died Dec. 16, 1998, of injuries suffered in a tree-cutting accident.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Grenola Christian Church. Pastor Wallace Wartick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Reeves was born July 27, 1929, in Renfro, Okla., to Fred Oliver and Edna Cloe (Hennen) Reeves. He attended school in Renfro, Grenola and Caldwell and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1947.
On March 15, 1951, he married Bertha Gladys Wolfe in Howard. They made their home in Grenola throughout their marriage.
Reeves was a heavy equipment operator for many years and remained active in the operation of his ranch until his death.
He was a deacon and elder of Grenola Christian Church and served as the church secretary and treasurer for more than 40 years. He was also a member of the Greenlawn Cemetery
Board.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha Reeves, Grenola; a son, Fred Reeves, Neodesha; three daughters, Karleen Smith, Clearwater, Carla Fulsom, Cedar Vale, and Joy Connelly, Sebring, Fla.; a brother, Paul Reeves, Bernville, Pa.; two sisters, Irene Carter, Bossier City, La., and Nancy Wirtz, Clifton, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren.
Harry Hearlson
WHITEWATER - Harry Hearlson, 85, formerly of 511 E. 10th, Winfield, died Dec. 17, 1998, at Wheat State Manor in Whitewater.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Ted Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with Wheat State Manor, 601 S. Main, Whitewater, KS 67154. Contributions can be made at the funeral home.
Hearlson was born Jan. 2, 1913, in Medford, Okla., to John Robert and Adaline Bell (Smith) Hearlson. He graduated from Medford (Okla.) High School.
On Aug. 4, 1935, he married Viola Margaret Kiess in Wellington. She died June 25, 1993.
Hearlson started with Boeing Aircraft in 1946 in Wichita, then transferred to Auburn, Wash., where he retired from Boeing in 1976. The Hearlsons returned to Kansas in 1981 and settled in Winfield in 1982.
Survivors include three sons, Don Hearlson, Hutchinson, Phillip Hearlson, Summerfield, Fla., and Ralph Hearlson, Federal Way, Wash.; two sisters, Etta Melick, Whitewater, and Martha Schmidtt, Hemit, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Myrta Shields
Services for Myrta V. "Peggy" Warren Shields, 67, who died Dec. 14, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 18, 1998, at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett officiated. Burial was in Tisdale Cemetery.
Jerry Conrad gave the eulogy.
Irma Schofield was the organist. Vocal music selections were "On the Wings of a Dove," "He" and "Tell Me the Story of Jesus," sung by Wilma Anglemyer, and "Holes in the Floor of Heaven," "The Dance" and "The River," sung by Jason Bruce.
Honorary casket bearers were Todd Andes, Parke Biby, Ron Cooley, James Madison, George Parsons and Daryl Thiel.
Casket bearers were Jason Conrad, Kevin Conrad, Kyle Conrad, Greg Koman, Eric Shields and Michael Shields.
Memorials have been established with William Newton Memorial Hospital and the Tisdale Fire Disaster Relief Fund. MIles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.
Ruth Massey
EUREKA - Ruth Marie Massey, 82, formerly of Severy, died Dec. 17, 1998, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 21, 1998, in Severy United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kibum Kim officiated. Burial was in South Lawn Cemetery
in Severy.
Florene Smith was organist. Jeleane Benest Osborn sang "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Led by the Master's Hand."
Honorary casket bearers were Ralph Crane, Charles Flaiz and Jim Garver.
Casket bearers were Larry Brown, Bill Courter, Melvin Knight, Chris Lance, Jim Osborn and Butch Sanford.
A memorial has been established with the Severy Senior Center. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Massey was born May 19, 1916, in Noble County, Okla., to Don and Blanche Edna (Stockton) Hamlin. The family later moved to Neodesha where she graduated from Neodesha High School in 1934. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Frank Bruton.
On June 3, 1934, she married Edgar Wilbur Cornett in Neodesha. To this union were born three children. They also raised a grandson as one of their own children. They made their home and operated a farm east of Severy for many years. After Mr. Cornett's death March 21, 1968, she moved from the farm and made her home in Severy.
On June 1, 1969, she married Benjamin F. Massey. He died Aug. 13, 1990.
Mrs. Massey was employed for several years at Ty's Cafe, Donard's Cafe and Ervin's Cafe in Severy. She was also a cook at the Severy Grade School. She served as a 4-H sewing leader and also did quilting work for many people in the Severy area.
For many years she was a Republican chairwoman and worked on the election board. She belonged to several clubs in the Severy area and was a longtime member of the Severy United Methodist Church and Severy United Methodist Women.
Survivors include two sons, James "Eddie" Cornett, Severy, and William "Bill" Copeland, Wichita; a daughter, Marjorie Chamberlain, Severy; a half-brother, George Hamlin, Port Angeles, Wash.; two half-sisters, Verl Fuller, Port Angeles, and Betty Anne Lance, Frankfort, Ky.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Alberta Copeland, preceded her in death.
Clarence Guldner
LYONS - Clarence D. Guldner, 87, of Lyons, formerly of Cedar Vale, died Dec. 20, 1998, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor in Lyons.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Lyons Municipal Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Friesen will officiate.
Friends may call at the Sillin Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with the National Wildlife Foundation.
Guldner was born Jan. 20, 1911, in Cedar Vale, to Roy and Jesse (Redinger) Guldner.
On July 17, 1936, he married Edith A. Neander in Concordia. She died Oct. 3, 1987.
A retired farmer, Mr. Guldner had lived in Rice County since 1936.
Survivors include a son, Clarence D. Guldner Jr., Clay Center; a daughter, C. Lee Guldner, Sterling; and two grandchildren.
Beth Crumet
LAWRENCE - Connie "Beth" Crumet, 46, of Lawrence, died Dec. 20, 1998, as a result of a vehicle accident east of Lawrence.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. A private burial will be in Hardy Oaks Cemetery.
Friends may call at the mortuary until 9 tonight.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Wild Care Wildlife Rehabilitation, and they can be sent in care of the mortuary.
Crumet was born Aug. 16, 1952, in Larned, to Charley and Jean (Shear) Vratil. She graduated from Larned High School. In 1971 she moved to Lawrence where she attended the University of Kansas for two years. She worked as a bookkeeper for Tobacco Express stores in Lawrence.
Survivors include her husband, Mike Crumet, Lawrence; her parents, Charley and Jean Vratil, Larned; a brother, Gary Vratil, Winfield; and a sister, Sherry Meeker, Homer, Alaska.
Frederick Smith
HOWARD - Frederick Walter "Fritz" Smith, 89, retired farmer and rancher, of Howard, died Dec. 22, 1998, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Grace Lawn Cemetery. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate.
A memorial has been established with Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions can be made at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard.
Smith was born May 6, 1909, in Elk County, to Sherman and Rose (Schwingel) Smith. He attended rural schools and graduated from Howard High School. He also attended Pittsburg State University and was a member of the football team.
On April 30, 1954, he married Virginia Lou (Flory) Threlfall in Bartlesville, Okla. They made their home on a ranch northwest of Howard until the early 1990s when Smith retired from ranching and they moved to Howard. His wife died Oct. 25, 1995.
Smith served several years as a Elk County commissioner.
Survivors include a stepson, William Threlfall, Denver.
Dollie Whaling
CEDAR VALE - Dollie Callaway Whaling, 79, of Cedar Vale, died Dec. 24, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Wichita.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Cedar Vale Cemetery. Friends may visit from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Wheeler Funeral Home, Cedar Vale.
Whaling was born April 16, 1918, in Checotah, Okla., to Samuel Houston and Maggie (Pitts) Butler. She grew up in the Checotah area but graduated from the Eufala Boarding School. For several years, she had worked for the Cedar Vale Hospital.
In 1942, she married George Callaway. Her husband died in 1973.
In 1994, she married Cecil Whaling.
Survivors include her husband, Cecil, of the home; a son, Charles Callaway, Neosho, Mo.; a brother, Gene Butler, of California; a sister, Ruth Butler, of California; and two grandchildren.
