Roberta Hocker
ABILENE - Roberta L. Hocker, 75, of Abilene, died July 19, 1999, in Salina Regional Health Center in Salina.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home of Abilene. The Rev. Earl Haggard will officiate, and burial will be in Abilene Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Contributions can be made to a memorial fund at the funeral home.
Hocker was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Woodbine to Jacob B. and Ida Marie (Miller) Longhofer. She attended schools in Woodbine and Marion.
On Jan. 2, 1944, she married Leo J. Hocker in Brownwood, Texas. They lived in Abilene, and she was employed as a checker at Tittle's Grocery and a seamstress at Vacu-Blast before her retirement.
Survivors include her husband, Leo Hocker, and a son, David Hocker, both of Abilene; a daughter, Linda Kaiser, Winfield; a sister, Lorraine Hale, Abilene; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A son, Jimmie Hocker, died in 1945.
Gleason Parsons
BURDEN - Robert Gleason Parsons, 83, of Burden, died July 20, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Wheeler Funeral Home Chapel in Burden. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.
There will be no viewing, but friends may go by the funeral home and sign the book until 7 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Burden Fire Department. Contributions may been made through the funeral home.
Parsons was born Dec. 2, 1915, near Douglass, to Benjamin and Dora (Swanson) Parsons.
On April 27, 1938, he married Ora Kingsbury in Newkirk, Okla. They had resided in Burden since 1938.
A farmer, Parsons had also drilled and laid pipe for water wells and oil wells.
He was a member of the Atlanta co-op and the township board.
Survivors include his wife, Ora Parsons, and a son, Irvin Parsons, both of Burden; two brothers, Harley Parsons, Winfield, and Raymond Parsons, Arkansas City; a sister, Wilma Ankrom, Hutchinson, and three grandchildren.
Orville Hartman
DENVER - Orville L. Hartman, 75, of Denver, died July 13, 1999, at a Denver Hospice facility.
Services were held at 10 a.m. July 16 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Denver. Pastor Maurice Goldhammer officiated. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Redeemer Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
Hartman was born Aug. 17, 1923, in Farmington, Minn., to the Rev. William and Beata (Pomrenke) Hartman.
On July 29, 1951, he married Ruth Ludwig in Columbus, Neb. They made their home in Denver. Hartman worked with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Lakewood, Colo., his entire career. Earlier he served with the Navy for two years.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hartman, Denver; four sons, Steve Hartman, Woodland Park, Colo., Keith Hartman, Golden, Colo., Alan Hartman, Lakewood, Colo., and Dale Hartman, Cedaredge, Colo.; two daughters, Diane Glasgow, Winfield, and Rachel Braunersreuther, Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Tali Duehlmeier, Fridley, Minn., and Billie McFadden, Downey, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
Harold Gibbon
TOPEKA - Harold French Gibbon, 67, of Topeka, formerly of Severy, died July 19, 1999, at his home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Severy United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery
in Severy.
A memorial has been established with the Severy United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Gibbon was born Oct. 29, 1931, in El Dorado, to Harold Nuckols and Harriet Melissa (French) Gibbon. He graduated from Severy High School in 1949.
On June 22, 1952, he married Elizabeth Jane Harris in Moline. He graduated from Southwestern College in 1953 with a bachelor's degree and did advanced studies at Emporia State University.
Gibbon was employed by the State Income Tax Division of Kansas and later worked in the State Auditor's Department. He was a member of the State of Kansas Administration Accounts and Reports Department, serving as assistant director and also as director. He retired in 1993.
He helped organize the National Society of Government Accountants and served as the organization's first president. He was a former member of the Severy United Methodist Church and had been a longtime member of the Elmont United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Gibbon, Topeka; three sons, Harold H. Gibbon, Derby, Kenneth Gibbon, Lawrence, and David Gibbon, Sand Springs, Okla.; two daughters, Kathy Gibbon, Topeka, and Jane Gibbon, Englewood, Colo.; his mother, Harriet Gibbon, Severy; three sisters, Jane Bartlett and Joan Fritze, both of Renton, Wash., and Sue MacCulley, Wichita; and 13 grandchildren.
Joan Wyckoff
OCEANSIDE, Calif. - Joan Harris Wckoff, 70, of Oceanside, died July 17, 1999, at Tri-City Hospital.
The body has been cremated. Services will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at North County Cremation Service. Pastor David Plank will officiate. Inurnment will be in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
Wyckoff was born Sept. 17, 1928, in Kansas.
A member of Tetelestal Christian Center, she retired from the Rialto, Calif., unified school district.
She and her husband, Billy Wyckoff, were married for 53 years.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Wyckoff, Oceanside; two sons, Kirk Wyckoff, Lumber Bridge, N.C., and Kris Wyckoff, Winfield; two brothers, Erwin Harris, Winfield, and Ernest Harris, Udall; and two grandchildren.
Helen Preston
DERBY - Helen Catherine Preston, 84, of Derby, died July 21, 1999, in Derby.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Smith Mortuary. The Rev. Alan Lindal will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bud Cemetery
at Udall.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.
Memorials have been established with Woodlawn United Methodist Church and the American Heart Association.
Preston was born Feb. 10, 1915, in Mulvane, to Raymond E. and Alice V. (Anderson) Wells.
On Sept. 26, 1941, she married Homer J. Preston in Carson City, Nev. He preceded her in death.
A bookkeeper, Preston retired from the Udall co-op. She was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church of Derby, the Mulvane American Legion Auxiliary and the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Kelly Preston, Nicaragua, and Michael Preston, Topeka; a daughter, Alicia Brown, Mill Creek, Wash.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Herbert Young
ARKANSAS CITY - Herbert Charles Young, 73, of Arkansas City, died July 21, 1999, at Medicalodge East.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Redeemer Lutheran Church in Arkansas City and Trinity Lutheran School in Winfield. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Young was born March 14, 1926, in Winthrop, Mo., to William A. and Florence (Jackson) Young. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1944. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
Young worked for Blish-Mize Hardware in Atchison from 1947 to 1954. He married Beatrice Marie Vogel in September 1949. They moved to Scott City in 1954 when he began traveling for Blish-Mize.
Young owned and operated Young's Hardware in Horton from 1960 to 1965. Then he and his family moved to Arkansas City, and he once again traveled for Blish-Mize. From 1968 to 1971 he worked for Wright-Burton Hardware in Arkansas City. He traveled for Wyeth Hardware of St. Joseph, Mo., from 1972 until retiring in 1989.
Young was a member and officer of Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was a past member of the Lions clubs of Horton and Arkansas City and a member of the National Hardware Association.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Young, two sons, Herbert C. Young Jr. and Steven C. Young, and a daughter, Amy Haist, all of Arkansas City; a sister, Lena Pitts, Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandchildren.
Wilma Armstead
ARKANSAS CITY - Wilma Joyce Armstead, 68, of Arkansas City, died July 22, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Patricia Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in the International Order of Oddfellows Cemetery
in Blackwell.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
A memorial has been established with St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Armstead was born June 25, 1931, in Eddy, Okla., to Joseph Don and Neva Abagail (Dale) Jarrett. She was raised in the Blackwell area and graduated from Blackwell High School.
Her husband, Robert Lee Armstead., died Nov. 18, 1975.
In 1958 Armstead moved from Blackwell to Arkansas City and went to work at General Electric at Strother Field. She was employed there for 36 years.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael Armstead, Glendale, Colo.; two daughters, Vickie Williams and Sharon Goodman, both of Arkansas City; a brother, Bill W. Jarrett, Albuquerque, N.M.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Connie Lee Armstead, preceded her in death.
Wayland Baker
ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Wayland J. Baker, 84, who died July 19, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. July 22 in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery
chapel near Arkansas City. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated.
Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons and Queen City Chapter 138 Order of Eastern Star performed fraternal ceremonies.
American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 provided military honors.
Music selections included "Angels Among Us," performed by Alabama, "Love Me," performed by Colin Ray, and "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers were Gary Bliss, Ben Holman, Wilbur Laubhan, Leonard Lawrence, Wayne Rush and Norman Shanks.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the First Christian Church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
