Ellis Shields
AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Rev. Dr. Ellis Gale Shields, 82, of Augusta, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 9, 2001, at University Hospital.
A memorial service was held Nov. 17 at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, Augusta. Plattes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Shields was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Winfield, to Sidney and Edna Shields. He attended rural Winfield schools and graduated from Winfield High School in 1937. He graduated from Southwestern College in 1941 with a degree in English.
Shields moved to California, worked in an aircraft factory and began taking classes at the University of Southern California. He married Allene Bennett of Winfield.
During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific as a gunnery officer on the USS St. Louis and later on the new USS Topeka. After the war, Shields remained in the reserve, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander.
Upon leaving active duty he again enrolled at the University of Southern California and received a Ph.D. in English literature and Latin
Shields taught at Louisiana State University, Natchitoches; the University of Texas at El Paso; Pittsburg State University; and Davis and Elkins College, Elkins, W.Va.
Sheilds was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1972. He served first as supply priest at Grace Church, Elkins, W.Va.; then, leaving teaching in 1974, as rector of St. Paul's Church, Wheeling, W.Va., and finally as rector of Christ Church, Augusta, Ga. He retired in 1984. From 1993-1996 he was an honorary assisting priest at St. Paul's Church, Athens, Greece.
Survivors include his son, Sidney Shields, and two stepgrandchildren.
Ruth Woodward
ARKANSAS CITY - Ruth L. Woodward, 92, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 26, 2001, at the Presbyterian Manor.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Hawks Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Lance Carrithers will officiate.
Visitation will be Wednesday at Hawks.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas, 800 Main Place, Winfield, KS 67156.
Woodward was born Feb. 2, 1909, in Wellington, to Vesta Estelle (Shay) and John A. Spohr. She graduated from El Dorado High School.
On May 7, 1927, she married William A. Woodward in Hutchinson. He preceded her in death Oct. 18, 1990.
Woodward worked as a salesperson at Newman's Department Store for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a past member of Friendly Neighbors and Royal Neighbors.
Survivors include two sons, Carl Woodward, Victoria, Texas, and Don Woodward, Thompson, N.D.; three daughters, Louise Leach, Arkansas City, Judy Hooper, Pickstown, S.D., and Barbara Isbell, Waukomis, Okla.; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Helen Soptic
GROVE, Okla. - Helen Soptic, 95, formerly of Cedar Vale, died Nov. 24, 2001, at a nursing home in Grove.
Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday in Cedar Vale City Cemetery. There is no visitation. Wheeler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Soptic was born Sept. 27, 1906, in Cedar Vale to O.D. and Vivian (Pugh) Sartin. She attended Cedar Vale schools.
Her husband, Bob Soptic, preceded her in death in 1964.
Soptic lived in Branson, Mo., before moving to the nursing home two and a half years ago.
Survivors include a nephew, Ronald Sartin, Miami, Okla.; and a niece, Janice Parent, Branson, Mo.
Ellen Parsons
HUDSON, Wis. - Ellen Steele Parsons, 82, formerly of Winfield, of Christian Community Home in Hudson, died Nov. 17, 2001.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bakken-Young Funeral Home in Hudson. The Rev. Karen Ditlefsen will officiate.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Christian Community Home, 1320 Wisconsin Street, Hudson.
Parsons was born April 25, 1919, in Marshall, Okla., to Lewis and Alma (Severen) Steele.
On May 19, 1941, she married Bernard E. Parsons. She had been a teacher, practical nurse and homemaker. They moved to Hudson in October 1999.
Her husband died July 23, 2001.
Survivors include her son, Alvin Parsons, Hudson; a sister, Edith Moeglin, Elgin, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Millard Kittelson
Millard D. Kittelson, 80, of Winfield, died Nov. 26, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services are set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church and the Kansas Veterans Home.
Kittelson was born June 23, 1921, in Winfield to Emmer L. and Florence (Fife) Kittelson. He attended Winfield schools and was a 1939 graduate of Winfield High School.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946.
On Dec. 4, 1943, he married Glorine Littrell.
Kittelson worked for Winfield Flour Mill and later for Snodgrass and Funk construction company. He worked in maintenance for the First National Bank before retiring in 1987. He continued to be the custodian at his church.
Kittelson was a member of the Winfield American Legion and active in the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Winfield; three sons, James and Randy Kittelson, both of Winfield, and Ron Kittelson, Montrose, Colo.; three daughters, Trudy Kittelson, Colorado Springs, Colo., Teresa Jacobs, Whitewater, and Janet Hostetter, Winfield; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Margie Bradbury
Margie Lorene Bradbury, 71, of Winfield died Nov. 25, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8.
Memorials have been established with Central Baptist Church and the National Parkinson's Foundation.
Born March 10, 1930, in Bentonville, Ark., she was a daughter of William Columbus and Nancy Jane (Stanley) Karnes. She was raised in Douthatt, Okla., and graduated from Picher (Okla.) High School in 1949.
On March 12, 1949, she married Sam S. Bradbury. The couple made their home in Picher until 1957 when they moved to Grants, N.M. In 1963, the family moved to Winfield.
Bradbury worked as supervisor of the catalog department at J.C. Penney's and as a sales associate at Winfield Wal-Mart before retiring in 1995.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Winfield; three daughters, Diana Cales, New Carlisle, Ohio, Rita Roark, Wichita, and Shirl Green, Derby; two brothers, Rex Karnes, Quapaw, Okla., and Clay Paul Karnes, Picher; a sister, Muriel Qualls, Springdale, Ark.; eight grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Dona Swallow
CAMBRIDGE - Services for Dona Gertrude Swallow were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 26, 2001, at the Cambridge Baptist Church. The Rev. Bill Hale officiated, and burial was in Argonia Cemetery.
Music included "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Beyond the Sunset."
Casketbearers were Justin Bates, Kenneth Bates and Bob Tredway.
A memorial has been established with the Cambridge Baptist Church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Miller
LOVELAND, Colo. - Margaret Ruth "Midge" Miller, 104, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 26, 2001, at North Shore Health Care Manor, Loveland.
Burial will be next to her husband in New Salem. Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80537, is handling arrangements.
Miller was born Oct. 30, 1897, in Sangamon County, Ill., to Bertha (Hatler) and James W. Kincaid. In 1918 she moved to Winfield with her family from Murry, Iowa, where she had attended high school.
She and Russell D. Miller eloped to Newton where they were married by the Rev. Shull on Jan. 17, 1920. They lived in New Salem where their sons were born, Winfield, Wellington and Wichita, until moving to Boulder, Colo., in 1974. Her husband died on Dec. 27, 1975.
A history buff, Miller was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was active in the Elks Club Auxiliary in Winfield and Wellington. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Winfield.
Survivors include two sons, J. Roland Miller, Loveland, Colo., and James A. Miller, Boulder, Colo.; a sister, Wilma "Billie" Malm, Greeley, Colo.; three granddaughters, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
