Doris June Held
(Oct. 22, 1929 - July 21, 2001)

Doris June Held, 71, Osawatomie, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in her home after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Osawatomie, the second of the three children of E.L. and Velma L. Hartford Conklin. She attended Osawatomie schools and was a 1947 graduate of Osawatomie High School.
While still in her teens, she began working as a secretary for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. She worked in Osawatomie, St. Louis, Mo., Little Rock, Ark., and Houston, Texas, until retiring in 1972.
She returned to Osawatomie and then worked for United Telephone Co., King Radio, Emerson Electric and Sprint. Her second retirement was in 1994.
She and Larry J. Held were married and they became the parents of two children. Their marriage ended in divorce.
She and Jerry C. Burgess were married in November 1993 in Overland Park.
Her memberships included the First Christian Church and National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, both of Osawatomie. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, International Order of Job's Daughters of Osawatomie and Heartland Art Guild of Paola.
Those preceding her in death were a brother, Clayton Conklin, and a sister, Dorothy Jean Conklin, who died in infancy.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Burgess of the home; a son, Richard Held of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Jolene Huston of Lake Quivira, Kan.; and one grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Osawatomie Cemetery. Arrangements are being cared for by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Norene Mathias
(April 10, 1914 - July 21, 2001)

Norena Mathias, 87, Centropolis, Kan., a native of Greeley, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
The daughter of Roy J. and Anna E. Kraus Ritchal, she was born April 10, 1914, in Greeley. She was a lifelong resident of Franklin County and had lived in Centropolis since 1975.
Survivors include her husband, Alfred Mathias of the home; two daughters, Jo Ann M. Harding of Tecumseh, Kan., and Marjorie A. Mathias of Osawatomie; two sons, David L. Mathias of Carbondale, Kan., and Leo F. Mathias of Blue Mound; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services were Wednesday in Dengel and Son Mortuary in Ottawa. Burial was in Princeton Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.

Benjamin F. Parks
(Feb. 16, 1918 - Feb. 25, 2002)

Benjamin F. Parks, 84, Garnett, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, in Anderson County Hospital in Garnett.
He was born Feb. 16, 1918, in Muhall, Okla., the son of LeRoy and Margaret Smith Parks. He and Opal Long were married Aug. 6, 1939, in Westphalia, Kan.
Mr. Parks, known as "Bennie," was a farmer in Anderson County. He also built the Garnett Skating Rink which he operated for more than 20 years, in addition to farming.
Those preceding him in death were two brothers, Melvin Parks and Ross Parks, and a sister, Mildred Hiestand.
Survivors include his wife, Opal Parks of Garnett; a son, Ralph Bennie Parks of Welda, Kan.; two daughters, Margaret Snyder of Rogers, Ark., and Phyllis Opal Adams of Garnett; a brother, Ray Parks of Richmond; five sisters, Faye Little of Oklahoma City, Harriett Oltmanns of Middletown, Ill., Vera Wills of Garnett, Lottie Krause of Cleveland, Ohio, and Bonnie Steward of Waverly, Kan.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home, followed by inurnment at 1:30 p.m. in the Mont Ida Cemetery in Mont Ida, Kan.
Memorials may be made to Parkinsons Research in care of the funeral home.

Peggy Harlene Brown
(Nov. 29, 1933 - Feb. 25, 2002)

Peggy Harlene Brown, 68, rural Osawatomie, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, in the Select Specialty Hospital in Overland Park. She had been hospitalized since January 2001.
The daughter of Harvey N. and Colesta Nan Taylor Walton, she was born Nov. 29, 1933, in Gallatin, Mo. She grew up and attended local schools in Gallatin.
She and Foy Eugene Toney were married in 1948. They made their home in Kansas City, Kan., and became the parents of three children. They were divorced in the mid 1960s.
She and Clifford L. Brown were married July 15, 1967, in Kansas City, Kan., where they lived until moving to Osawatomie in 1973. They became the parents of one son.
She worked as an aide in a Kansas City nursing home and at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She was also a courier for Upsher Laboratories.
Mrs. Brown enjoyed crafts, flowers, playing bingo and traveling.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford Brown of the home; two sons, Gary Toney of Kansas City, Kan., and Rodney Brown of Osawatomie; two daughters, Mindy Nibert of Kansas City, Kan., and Karla Collins of Osawatomie; a brother, Robert Walton of Deltona, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
She will be in state after 1:30 p.m. Thursday and the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Thursday night in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Osawatomie Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Ronald McDonald House in care of the funeral home.

Dale William Browning
(July 10, 1922-Feb 22, 2002)

Dale William Browning, 79, Fort Scott, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, in Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott.
He was born July 10, 1922, in Centerville, Kan., the son of Lloyd W. and Essie Clark Browning.
Mr. Browning served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He and Martha Wilkerson were married Feb. 28, 1948, in Centerville.
He was a carrier for the Kansas City Star for 29 years. Later, he was a caretaker of the Pleasanton Cemetery.
Mr. Browning was a member of the Bykota Southern Baptist Church in Pleasanton.
Those preceding him in death included an infant daughter, Bonnie, and one brother, Willis Paul Browning.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Browning of Fort Scott; a daughter, Tammie Cates of Pittsburg; a sister, Evelyn Ball of Montgomery, Ind.; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial services were Wednesday in Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Pleasanton. He was cremated.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

Mary Jane Jones
(April 21, 1907 - Feb. 24, 2002)

Mary Jane Jones, 94, Spring Hill, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Beverly HealthCare in Spring Hill.
She was born April 21, 1907, near West Mineral, Kan., the daughter of John T. and Alma McCart O'Malley. The family later moved to Scammon, Kan.
She graduated from high school in Columbus, Kan., and attended Pittsburg State University, where she received her lifetime teaching certificate. She taught school in the Scammon area for several years.
She was married to W.C. "Casey" Jones in June 1936. They moved to Johnson County, where her husband began his legal career. He preceded her in death in 1970.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Sigournean Club of Olathe and served on the board of education of Hilltop School.
A sister, Florence Robinson, and two brothers, James O'Malley and Lawrence O'Malley also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, William C. Jones of Paola and J.D. Jones of Spring Hill; a sister, Adeline Duncan; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Wea, 11779 Metcalf Ave., followed by visitation at 9:45 a.m. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. and burial will be in the church cemetery in Wea. Arrangements are by Bruce Funeral Home, P.O. Box 7, Spring Hill, KS 66083.
Memorials may be made to the Holy Rosary School in Wea.
