DONALD D. ATKINSON

SHAWNEE -- Donald D. Atkinson, 65, Shawnee, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Shawnee.

He was born Jan. 15, 1937, to Morris and Louise Atkinson in Liberal.

He married Kathryn Regan in 1969. She survives.

He moved to the Kansas City area in 1967.

He graduated from Donnelly College in 1971, The University of Kansas in 1973 and Webster University in St. Louis, Mo., where he earned a master's of art degree in teaching.

He taught at Raymond B. Marsh Elementary from 1973-1978, West Antioch Elementary from 1976-1986 and in 1989 he owned and operated the Shawnee Barber Shop until March 2002.

Other survivors include one son, Tim Millsap and wife, Christy, Kirkwood, Mo.; two daughters, Betsy Atkinson, Mission, and Katy Swanson and husband, Dave, Overland Park; his parents, of Liberal; one sister, Pat Harrison and husband, Arnold, Chula Vista, Calif.; "Brother" John Farrow, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Brittany, Stephen and Nicholas; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A mass of resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee.

The family suggests memorials to the Heartland Cancer Research and Treatment Center, 4215 Shawnee Drive, Kansas City, KS 66106.

He donated his body to the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Amos Family Chapel in Shawnee is in charge of arrangements.

AMY GARDNER

ANDREWS, Texas -- Amy Gardner, 18, Andrews, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, in Odessa, Texas, as the result of an automobile accident.

She was born Aug. 11, 1983, to Bill and Janelle Gardner in Liberal.

She moved to Andrews in 1992 from Liberal.

She graduated from Andrews High School in 2001. While attending Andrews High School., she was involved in AHS Band, AHS Jazz Band, was an AHS cheerleader, played AHS tennis and was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society.

She was attending the University of Texas Permian Basin in Odessa.

She was a member of the Temple Baptist Church in Odessa, where she taught pre-school Sunday school class.

Her hobbies included playing the piano.

Survivors include her parents, of Andrews; one sister, Tiffany Gardner, Abilene; fiance, Jeremy Watkins, Odessa; grandparents, Bill and Fonda White, Tyrone, Okla., and Viola Gardner, Coushatta, La.; and a great-great-aunt, Lucile Seawright, Liberal.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Dwight Gardner in 1990.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today at the Tyrone Baptist Church in Tyrone with the Rev. Kim Domnick presiding.

Additional funeral services will be at 4:30 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Andrews with the Rev. Griffin Jones and Dr. H.A. Hanks presiding.

Burial will be at Tyrone Cemetery in Tyrone.

McNett Funeral Home in Andrews is in charge of arrangements.

DAVID MCCART

PLAINS -- David McCart, 34, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at his home in Plains.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

LUCILLE D. CRYER

HUGOTON -- Lucille Delberta Cryer, 89, Centralia, Mo., formerly of Hugoton, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Centralia, where she had been a resident since 1990.

She was born Sept. 9, 1912, to Joseph Wilson and Kathleen Gertrude (Parnham) Titus in Liberal.

She married Virgil Herman Cryer July 25, 1931, in Liberal. He died Dec. 15, 1990.

She lived in the Liberal area most of her life.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Hugoton and the Social Order of Beauceant in Liberal.

Her hobbies included gardening and sewing.

Survivors include one son, Gary Lea Cryer and wife, Janice, Wichita; one daughter, Shirley Yvonne Austin and husband, Joe, Centralia; one brother, Alton Jospeh Titus and wife, Jean, Arvada, Colo.; three sisters, Neva Hardin, Carmichael, Calif., Zilda Harris and husband, Jack, Rogers, Ark., and Vuleen Lofland and husband, Ted, Chickasha, Okla.; six grandchildren, Jana Clark, Monte Austin, Gregory Cryer, Melanie Stewart and husband, Bill, Melissa Koehn and husband, Craig, and Melinda Pessly and husband, Paul; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Bernice McCune, Wilma Brewer and Velma Smith; and one grandson, Scott Cryer.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton with the Minister Jeff Aenk presiding.

Burial will be at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Paul's Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Fund in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

SALETA E. KIMBELL

MEADE -- Saleta Eugenia Kimbell, 83, died Monday, April 1, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.

She was born Dec. 10, 1918, to Frank and Bessie (Mangum) Cain in Canadian, Texas.

She married Otis Doyle Kimbell Feb. 3, 1935, in Canadian. He died April 29, 1970.

She had been a resident of Meade since 1954.

She was a homemaker and seamstress.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Meade.

Survivors include one son, Dee Kimbell, Chanute; one daughter, Lee Carbone, Naples, Fla.; one brother, Artis Cain, Amarillo, Texas; four grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, LaFawn Osborn.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Meade with the Rev. Harry Fink presiding.

Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Edith Ford Cemetery in Canadian.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade. The casket will not be opened at the church on the day of the service.

Memorials are suggested to Kansas State University Center for Basic Cancer Research in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, P.O. Box 70, 212 S. Fowler St., Meade, KS 67864.

VELDA P. MONNINGER

MONTEZUMA ­ Velda Pauline Monninger, 87, Montezuma, died Monday, April 8, 2002 at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma, where she had been a resident.

She was born Sept. 23, 1914, to John Upton and Louella Belle (Gregory) Menzie in Pawnee Rock.

She married Jacob Ira Blackwelder June 4, 1933, in Montezuma. He died May 7, 1950.

She married George R. Monninger Dec. 31, 1951, in Montezuma. He died May 31, 1967.

She attended Fort Hays Teachers College for one year, and she taught school at Homeland Country School in rural Montezuma.

She was a supervisor in the lunch rooms at Montezuma schools for many years.

She was a homemaker and a seamstress.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and worked for years at the church.

She was a member of U.M.W., Bluelight Extension, Gray County Homemaker Council, and was a Project Leader of 4-H.

Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, working with children, and visiting with family.

Other survivors include two daughters, Marlene Ullom and husband, Ira L. "Buck," and Louise Thomas and husband, Vic, all of Montezuma; one daughter-in-law, Georgia Blackwelder, Augusta, Ga.; one step-daughter, Madge Monninger-Saville and husband, John, Salina; one brother, Virgil Menzie and wife, Jerry, Ulysses; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Eugene Blackwelder; and three brothers, Kenneth Menzie, Warren Menzie, and Leonard Menzie.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Montezuma with the Rev. Gene Eshleman and the Pastor Rick Thomas presiding.

Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

Memorials are suggested to either the United Methodist Church or the Morningside Community Church Kitchen Fund, both in Montezuma, in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

JOHN M. SMITH

MEADE ­ John Mark Smith, 43, Meade, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, in Dodge City.

He was born Jan. 6, 1959, to Clarence and Betty (Spence) Smith in Rolla, Mo.

He married Debi Woltje Jan. 21, 1997, in Las Vegas. She survives.

He moved to Lyons with his family as a young boy.

After his education, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and after his discharge, he went to work in cable communications.

He moved to Meade in 1991 from Medicine Lodge.

He was the general manager for Charter Communications in Meade.

Other survivors include two sons, Christopher Lawless, McPherson, and Clint Massey, Meade; four daughters, Nicole Smith and Theresa Smith, both of Great Bend, Leslie Massey and Kadie McCulloch, both of Meade; his mother, Lyons; and one brother, David Smith, Tulsa, Okla.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Saint John Lutheran Church in Meade with the Rev. Lynn E. Spencer presiding.

Cremation has already taken place. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, P.O. Box 70, 212 S. Fowler St., Meade, KS 67864.
