Mary Catherine Haney
Mary Catherine Haney, age 64, of West Van Lear passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at her home. Born September 26, 1944 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Marie Gullett Haney. She is survived by one daughter, Paula (Jamie) Sluss of Van Lear; four brothers, Chris, Tom, and Allen Haney all of Paintsville and Rob Haney of Weat Van Lear; two sisters, Rebecca Warnock and Ginger Haney both of Paintsville; and four grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the Hager Hill Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Buchanan cemetery in Boyd County. Friends may visit the church after 5 PM Thursday and all day Friday. Ronnie Spriggs will officiate. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

Harrison Butcher
Harrison Butcher, age 42, of Williamsport passed away Sunday, November 2, 2008. Born July 1, 1966 in Johnson County, he was the son of Barbara Spence Butcher and the late Virgil Butcher. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Salmons Butcher; one son, Marcus Eugene Butcher; one brother, Kenneth Michael Butcher of Wyoming; and one sister, Sue Butcher of Williamsport.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Wednesday, November 5, 2008 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez with burial to follow in the Butcher Family cemetery at Williamsport. Friends may visit the funeral home from 5-10 PM Tuesday. Jess Allen and Keith Brumfield will officiate.

Kenneth Dale Preece
Kenneth Dale Preece, age 42, of Columbus passed away Monday, November 3, 2008. Born May 22, 1965 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of the late James Arthur Preece. Survivors include his mother, Romaine and Jerry Rhodes; one son, Cody Preece; two brothers, James Allen Preece and Ernest and Margaret Preece; one sister, Susann Rhodes; three nephews, Alexander and Zathian Preece all of Columbus and Isiah Preece stationed at U.S. Air Force Base in Lockland, Texas; one niece, Kelsey Preece also of Columbus; and fiance, Maria and sons, Alex and Ricky. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandparents, Oakley Parsons and Bessie McCarty, and C.H. Took and Margie Preece.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, November 6, 2008 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez with burial to follow in the Dials Family cemetery on Coldwater. Friends may visit the funeral home from 5:00-10:00 PM Wednesday. Gabe Lowe, Jr. will officiate.

Hester Johnson
Hester Johnson, age 57, of Inez passed away Sunday, November 2, 2008. Born June 17, 1951 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late Marion Johnson and Fannie Bowens Johnson. Hester is survived by three brothers; James, Curtis and Thomas Johnson all of Inez; and two sisters, Lois and Haley Johnson both of Inez.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Wednesday, November 5, 2008 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Maynard cemetery at Cassell Branch. Friends may visit the funeral home from 5-10 PM Monday and all day Tuesday. David Hanner and John Patrick will officite.

Ray W. Stepp
Ray W. Stepp, age 59, of Inez passed away Saturday, November 1, 2008 at his home. Born September 18, 1949 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Robert Stepp and Garnett Bowens Stepp. Ray is survived by two brothers, Bobby Gene Stepp of Inez and Ovie Stepp of Zanesville, Ohio; four sisters, Janetta Maynard and Joann Vanhoose both of Inez, Lucy Britten of Zanesville and Ernestine Luster of Columbus.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, November 3, 2008 at the Vineyard United Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Stepp cemetery at Inez. Friends may visit the church after 5 PM Saturday and all day Sunday. Richard (Doc) Maynard will officaite. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

Dicie VanHoose
Dicie VanHoose, age 76, of Denver passed away Thursday, December 4, 2008 at her home. Born June 9, 1932 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Topsy and Leona Fairchild Ratliff. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lifes Vanhoose; two sons, Ricky and Charles Vanhoose; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by two sons, David and Lifes Vanhoose Jr both of Denver; one daughter, Ethel Leona Blair of Denver; one brother, Jay Ratliff of Indiana; one sister, Ella Ratliff of Leander; two half-brothers, Hollie Ratliff of Red Bush and Lawrence Ratliff of Tutor Key; three half-sisters, Martha Kidd of Denver, Mary Penington of Williamsport and Ollie Suthern of Denver; eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be 1 PM Sunday in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Topsy Ratliff cemetery at Denver. Friends may visit the funeral home from 6-10 PM Friday and from 9AM to 10 PM Saturday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

Hazel Fluty McCoy
Hazel Fluty McCoy, age 98, of Louisa passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa. Born July 12, 1910 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Fluty and Violet Pelphrey Fluty. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Tracy McCoy; four sons, Tom, Claude, Bobbie and Paul; and one daughter, Betty Short. Hazel is survived by five sons, Earnest McCoy of Inez, Ed McCoy of Louisa, Floyd McCoy of Inez, Clyde McCoy of Wheelersburg, Ohio and Roger McCoy of Columbus; six daughters, Edith Davis of Wheelersburg, Jean Belcher of Orient, Ohio, Mary (Pat) Fitch of Inez, Violet Miller of Inez, Wanda Hatfield of Columbus and Peggy Fannin of Inez; 28 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren and 25 great great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the New Friendship United Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Fluty Lick cemetery. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 12 PM to 10 PM on Friday. John Goble and Edgar James will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

Josephine Whitaker
Josephine Whitaker, age 80, of Little Paint Road, East Point, passed away Friday, February 6, 2009 at Highland Regional in Prestonsburg. Born June 9, 1928 in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Cleveland and Alta Blair Whitaker. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one brother, Herbert Whitaker; and one sister, Opal Whitaker. Josephine is survived by one brother, Johnny Whitaker of Salyersville. She was a retired school teacher.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Sunday, February 8, 2009 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Whitaker Family cemetery at East Point. Friends may visit the funeral home from 1PM to 8PM on Saturday. Bobby Joe Spencer, Richard Green and Clifford Spencer will officiate. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

Woodrow Harris
Woodrow Harris, age 94, of Flat Gap passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the V.A. Hospital in Huntington. Born January 25, 1915 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Maywood Harris and Clista Slone Harris. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Murray Slone; one son, Tony Harris of Flat Gap; one daughter, Teresa Kitchen also of Flat Gap; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild also survives. He was a WWII Veteran.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Friday, February 6, 2009 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Edward Salyers cemetery at Flat Gap. Kennt Pelphrey and Tim Salyers will officiate. Friends may visit the funeral home after 5 PM Wednesday and all day Thursday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

John Garland Howell
John Garland Howell, age 40, of Beauty passed away Sunday, February 1, 2009. Born May 15, 1968 in South Williamson, he was the son of Lillian Rose Horn Howell of Inez and the late Garland Howell. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margaret Hunt Howell; two sons, James Meek and John Garland Howell II both of Beauty; three daughters, Carlyene Lilly Howell of Stanton, Audreaona LillieAnn Howell and Elizabeth Marie Rose Howell both of Beauty; three brothers, Gary Howell of Lexington, Barry Howell of Debord and Terry Howell of Tomahawk; and two sisters, Debbie Hill of Louisa and Sherry Brown of Inez.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the Tomahawk Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Horn Family cemetery at Tomahawk. Friends may visit the church after 4PM Monday and all day Tuesday. Tim McCoy and Mike Jarrell will officiate. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

Russell (Old Man Pat) Fields
Russell (Old Man Pat) Fields, age 75, of Inez passed away Monday, February 2, 2009. Born September 27, 1933 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Elmer Fields and Mint Cain Fields. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son, Jim Fields; and one daughter, Brenda Fields; He is survived by one son, Thomas Fields of Michigan; two daughters, Patricia Cornett and Faye Copley both of Inez; two brothers, Elden Fields of Indiana and Eddie Fields of Ohio; one sister, Sandy Carter of Ohio; and and 10 grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the Martin County Mission Church with burial to follow in the Fields Family cemetery at Meathouse. Joe Mullins and Bobby Mullins will officiate. Friends may visit the church after 5 PM Tuesday and all day Wednesday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.
