FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Willie Conner, 71, of Ferriday, who died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday, will be at 11 a.m. today at Concordia Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Schiele officiating.

Burial will follow at Ferriday cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Mr. Conner was born Nov. 18, 1932, in Torres, La.

Mr. Conner was preceded in death by his parents, John and Matilda Wesley Conner; one son, Willie Conner Jr.; one sister, Lucille Conner; two brothers, Levi and James Conner.

Survivors include one daughter, Gloria Faye Schiele of Ferriday; one son, James Conner of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Geneva Hawkins and Octavia Tyler of Ferriday and Parnell McClaine of New Orleans, La.; two grandchildren, Netrina England and Jasmine Schiele of Ferriday; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jackson Pecanty

March 1, 1932 - May 29, 2004

EVA, La. - Funeral services for Jackson Pecanty, 72, of Monterey, La. who died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Rapides General Medical Center Alexandria, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Eva Church of God with the Rev. Marion Trisler Jr., the Rev. Lloyd Trisler and the Rev. Kevin Sims officiating.

Burial will follow at Tooley Family cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Young's Funeral Home in Jonesville, La.

Mr. Pecanty was a resident of Monterey, a retired Machine Operator for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and a member of the Eva Church of God. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Mr. Pecanty was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Pecanty and his father, Ernest J. Pecanty.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Marie Ivey Pecanty of Monterey; son, James Pecanty and wife, Kathy of Monterey; grandchildren, James Pecanty Jr. and Lindsey Marie Pecanty; sister, Mabel LaParrie of Ferriday.

Pallbearers will be Dane Paul, Tommy Tiffee, Rickey Wiley, Eddie Wiley, Shawn Pecanty and James Pecanty Jr.

Melba Irene Walsworth Fowler

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Melba Irene Walsworth Fowler, 92, of St. Joseph, La., who died Sunday, May 23, 2004, in Vicksburg, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Young's Funeral Home Chapel Ferriday with Elder Jerald Williams officiating.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Zion Rest cemetery in Weston, La. with the Rev. Jesse Stripland officiating.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Michael Stephen Stutson

April 22, 1967 - May 23, 2004

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Michael Stephen Stutson, 37, of Clayton, La., who died Sunday, May 23, 2004, in Clayton, will be at 2 p.m. today at Comer Funeral Home Chapel in Ferriday with the Rev. Denny Braswell officiating.

Burial will be in Harrisonburg cemetery in Harrisonburg, La. under the direction of Comer Funeral Home.

Mr. Stutson was born April 22, 1967, in Ferriday, the son of Charles C. and Patsy B. Stutson.

He was a life long resident of Catahoula and Concordia Parishes. He was employed by Oliveaux Farms in Ferriday and a member of the Cash Bayou Baptist Church in Cash Bayou, La.

Mr. Stutson was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Barron and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Stutson.

Survivors include his mother and father, Charles C. and Patsy B. Stutson of Ferriday; two daughters, Nicole Stutson and Ashley Stutson, both of Ferriday; two sisters, Jan Hinton of Clayton, La. and Sharon Stutson of Alexandria, La.; nephew, Steve Hinton of Ferriday.

Pallbearers will be Joe De'Armond, Jay Manley, Wade Oliveaux, Benton Finley, Monty Warshaw, Mike Davis, Edward Wheat and David King.

Carolyn B. Cowan

FERRIDAY, La. - Memorial services for Carolyn B. Cowan, 56, of Ferriday, who died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at her residence in Ferriday, will be at 4:30 p.m. today at Dunbarton Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Wagoner officiating.

Mrs. Cowan was a homemaker and a member of the Dunbarton Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Carroll Browning and Sarah Pautine Davis Browning; and a brother, Jamie White.

Survivors include her husband, Dallas "Rockie" Foster Cowan of Ferriday; a son, Scottie R. Cowan of Ferriday; a daughter, Carmen Ruth Cowan Buckles of Ferriday; two grandsons, Matthew Ray Buckles and Dalton Ray Cowan of Ferriday; and a granddaughter, Catherine Colleen Buckles of Ferriday.

Robert Owen "Bobby" Johnson

HARRISONBURG, La. - Funeral services for Robert Owen "Bobby" Johnson, 77, of Harrisonburg, La., who died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Cabrini Medical Center in Alexandria, will be at 4 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Harrisonburg with the Rev. Ralph Webber officiating.

Burial will be at Harrisonburg cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral home in Jonesville.

Mr. Johnson was born January 29, 1927 in Shreveport, the son of John Dewey Johnson Sr. and Annie Belle Chambers Johnson. He served in the United States Naval Reserve and graduated from Northwestern State College with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was a three-year letterman in football and baseball at NSC. He was an all-Gulf States Conference halfback selection in 1947 and 1948. He played professional baseball with the Alexandria Aces, the Monroe Sports and the Temple (Texas) Eagles. Following his professional baseball career, Mr. Johnson played for several commercially-sponsored fast-pitch softball teams in Shreveport and Bossier City. He was inducted into the Northwestern State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Louisiana Fast-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 2002. He was a retired tax supervisor for Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and a member of the First Baptist Church of Harrisonburg.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Scott Lawrence Johnson.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Beth McGuffee Johnson of Harrisonburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gregg Gillespie of Tyler, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Lori Galante Johnson of Houston, Texas; a brother, J. D. Johnson Jr. of Shreveport; grandchildren Todd, Pat, Kirby, Kara and Katie Johnson and Sarah and Scott Gillespie; and great-grandchildren Kendall and Garrett Johnson.

Pallbearers are Greg Gillespie, Clarence Routon Jr., Harold Routon, Kevin Routon, Layne McGuffee, Jerry Johnson, Malcom Terry and Greg Terry. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Wilkins, Doyle McClennen, Robert Manning, Johnny Emmons and Herbert Terry.

Pearl Hudnall White

JONESVILLE, La. - Services for Pearl Hudnall White, 80, of West Monroe, La., formerly of Jonesville, who died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Premiere Rehab Hospital in Monroe, La., will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Jonesville with the Rev. Dennis Anger and the Rev. Lloyd Trisler officiating.

Burial will be in Pala Alto under the direction of Young's Funeral Home Jonesville.

Visitation is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 2 p.m. until service time Sunday at the church.

Mrs. White was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Morgan White Sr.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hudnall; brothers, Henry Hudnall and Oran Hudnall.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia White Valentine and her husband, Edward of West Monroe and Connie White Williams and her husband, James Ray of Ashville, N.C.; son, Luther Morgan White Jr. and his wife, Loretta of Ferriday, La.; grandsons, Mark Valentine and his wife, Christy of West Monroe, Michael Valentine and his wife, Rachael and Craig White, all of Bossier City, La. and Luke Williams of Ashville, N.C.; granddaughters, Amy White Green and her husband, Jody of Monterey, La. and Sarah Williams Thew and her husband, Tim of Baltimore, Md.; great-grandchildren, Conner and Collyn Grace Valentine of West Monroe; sister, Lucille Bond of Jonesville.

Pallbearers will be Cloid White, Robert White, Brian Bond, Randy Bond, James White and Keith White.

Mary McCoy

July 8, 1964 - May 19, 2004

VIDALIA, La. - Services for Mary McCoy, 39, of New Orleans, La. formerly of Vidalia, who died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Oschner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Baptist Church in Vidalia with the Rev. Willie Birdon officiating.

Burial will be in the Vidalia cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Ms. McCoy was born July 8, 1964, in Natchez, the daughter of Lee Andrew and Leola Cage McCoy.

She was an equipment supervisor for Cox Cable Company of New Orleans.

Ms. McCoy was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John D. McCoy; and one sister, Lucille M. Abbott.

Survivors include one son, Damon McCoy of New Orleans; two brothers, Lee Andrew McCoy Jr. of Vidalia and Willie McCoy of Ferriday, La.; two sisters, Calline McCoy and Rose M. Millicks of Vidalia; her fiancee', Joe Vann of New Orleans; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Billy Charles "Bill" Porter

May 4, 1932 - May 18, 2004

JONESVILLE, La. - Services for Billy Charles "Bill" Porter, 72, of Jonesville, who died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, in Pineville, La., will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Jonesville with the Rev. Jessie Watkins and the Rev. Mickey Hudnall officiating.

Burial will be in Heard cemetery in Manifest, La. under the direction of Comer Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday at the church.

Mr. Porter was born May 4, 1932, in El Dorado, Ark., the son of Brownie C. and Alice H. Porter.

He had been a resident of Jonesville since 1941 and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Jonesville. Mr. Porter was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Navy. He was an independent oil field switcher retiring in 1996.

Mr. Porter was preceded in death his parents; two brothers, James Porter and C. Vaughn Porter; and a step-son, Timmy Beatty.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Kirkland Porter of Jonesville; son, Edward Porter of Jonesville; step-son, Paul Beatty of Jonesville; two daughters, Lori White and Carolyn Smith and her husband, Curtis, all of Jonesville; four sisters, Dorothy Towler of Ypsilanti, Mich., Mary Lou Hampp of Easton, Md., Faye Neighbors of Roswell, Ga. and Marjorie Murph of El Dorado, Ark.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Brad Cockerham, Bill Cockerham, Donnie Collins, Bill Nolan, Bob Porter and David Miller.

Myrtle Lipsey

MONTEREY, La. - Services for Myrtle Lipsey, 85, of Monterey, who died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at her residence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at New Era Baptist Church with the Rev. Huey Tarpley and the Rev. Mike Stowell officiating.

Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home of Ferriday, La.

Visitation is from 6 p.m. today until service time Friday at the church.

She was a homemaker, was a charter member of the New Era Baptist Church and the Womens Missionary Union and taught Sunday school for many years.

Mrs. Lipsey was preceded in death by her husband, Ivy Lipsey; father, Jimmy Paul; mother, Almedia Paul; son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur and Kathy Lipsey; sister, Evie Bounds; brothers, Willie W. Paul and Raymond Paul.

Survivors include son, Paul Lipsey and wife, Barbara of Monterey; daughter, Valda Greene and husband, Curtis of Monterey; brother, James Clay Paul of Monterey; sister, Eva Moreland of Monterey; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Era Baptist Church Building Fund.

Gloria Frances Edwards Frost

June 4, 1922 - May 19, 2004

VIDALIA, La. - Services for Gloria Frances Edwards Frost, 81, of Vidalia, who died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, in Natchez, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Vidalia with the Rev. Paul Kunnumpurrum officiating.

Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Sicily Island under the direction of Comer Funeral Home of Ferriday, La.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Frost was born June 4, 1922, in New Orleans, La., the daughter of Emile W. Sr. and Louise B. Edwards.

She had been a resident of Vidalia since 1977. She was a secretary with Bell South retiring in 1977 and was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Vidalia.

Mrs. Frost was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Emile W. Edwards Jr.; and a sister, Gladys Riviere.

Survivors include her husband, William R. Frost of Vidalia; son, George John Novakov Jr. of New Orleans; two nephews, Donald Riviere of Metarie, La. and Billy Edwards of Chalmette, La.; two grandchildren, Jay Novakov and Jaime Novakov, both of New Orleans; great-grandchild, Christopher Matthew Novakov of New Orleans.

Dorothy "Bit" McNair Reed Smith

Nov. 4, 1925 - May 18, 2004

SICILY ISLAND, La. - Services for Dorothy "Bit" McNair Reed Smith, 78, of Sicily Island, who died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at her residence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sicily Island United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Foster officiating.

Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Sicily Island under the direction of Comer Funeral Home of Ferriday, La.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Baskin, La., the daughter of Jack G. and Jessie Chisum McNair.

"Bit" was a graduate of Sicily Island High School and Louisiana State University, where she received a B.A. in Elementary Education. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and was one of the university's most avid sports fans. "Bit" married Joseph Lyle Reed and made a home in Vinton, La., where she was a teacher in the Calcasieu Parish School System. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 153 in Vinton. After Jody's death she continued to teach there until her retirement. After marrying Charles Smith, they returned to Sicily Island and built a home where she resided until her death. "Bit" was a dedicated teacher who spent most of the latter years substituting in Sicily Island classrooms. She was adored by faculty and students alike. A member of the Sicily Island First Unite Methodist Church, she served on many committees and was Sunday School Director for several years. Her church and church family were very important to her and she supported them in every way.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Joseph Lyle Reed; her second husband, Charles Smith; sisters, Eva McNair and Kitty McNair Nolen; and brother, Jack McNair, Chisum "Son" McNair and Charles McNair.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, B. G. Hair of Springfield, La., C. B. Hair of McKinney, Texas, Nancy Burleigh of Kinder, La., Libba Watkins of Welsh, La., Mary C. Krause of Fort Pierce, Fla. and M. B. Nolen III of Sicily Island; and a number of great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be B. G. Hair, C. A. Hair, M. B. Nolen III, Albert Krause, Russell Burleigh, Bobby Watkins, Rusty Burleigh and Dr. Albert N. Krause.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lynn Evans, Roy Evans, Charles Miller, Dr. Billie Coney, Aubrey Chisum and M. B. Nolen Jr.
