William Preston Bennett

March 23, 1919 - Dec. 12, 2004

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for William Preston Bennett, 85, of Ferriday, La., who died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, in Monroe, La., will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Comer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Smith officiating.

Burial will be in the Greenlawn Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Comer Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Bennett was born March 23, 1919, in Alto, La., the son Vallie and Nobie T. Bennett.

He was a resident of Ferriday since 1949 and a member of the Sevier Memorial United Methodist Church in Ferriday. He was a retired civil engineer with the Louisiana Department of Public Works.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavon C. Bennett; daughter, Bonita Bennett Parker; and son-in-law, Gus Parker.

Survivors include a grandson, William Guy Parker of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters, Billie Jean Bennett of West Monroe, La. and Eva Hoffman of Monroe, La.

VIDALIA, La. - Funeral arrangements for Greg King, 24, of Vidalia, La., who died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Young's Funeral Home Ferriday.

CLAYTON, La. - Funeral arrangements for Ed Dobson, 78, of Clayton, La., who died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Heritage Manor in Ferriday, La., are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Young's Funeral Home Ferriday.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jerry Leo Sandidge

JONESVILLE, La. - Services for Jerry Leo Sandidge, 71, of Nikiski, Ark., who died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at his deer camp in Enterprise, La., will be 2 p.m. today at New Ouachita Baptist Church with Bro. George Treutlein and Bro. Shane Duke officiating.

Burial will be in the Old Catahoula cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home Jonesville.

John Bowlus Echols

Feb. 23, 1937 - Dec. 23, 2004

BATON ROUGE, La. - Surrounded by his family, Dr. Echols died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at his residence in Baton Rouge, La., following a lengthy illness.

Dr. Echols was born Feb. 23, 1937, in new Albany, the son of Donald Hunter Echols and Eulah Bowlus Echols.

His parents preceded him in death, as did cousin Ann Cooper.

Survivors include his wife, Mollie Jones Echols of Baton Rouge, formerly of Natchez; daughters, Kathryn Echols Beasley and husband, Evan R. Beasley, Connie Hunter and husband, Chip Hunter, and Kandi Salmon, all of Baton Rouge; two granddaughters, Jilliann and Megan Hunter; cousins, Jane Poche of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Barbara Liles of Wilmington, S. C.

Dr. Echols' formal education included a bachelor of science from Millsaps College, a master of science from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D. from LSU, all in the field of geology. After years of work in research, exploration and production, Dr. Echols became an independent geologist in Natchez, and in 1990, moved to Baton Rouge as the director for Basin Research Institute at LSU, where he later assumed a position of assistant professor at the institute. Post-retirement, Dr. Echols continued independently in his field, having contributed greatly in the areas of coalbed methane and Wilcox drilling.

The plans for a memorial service in Baton Rouge and interment in Jackson, are incomplete at present, but will be further announced after cremation.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Natchez Children's Home, Natchez, Miss., and Forward by Faith, c/o the Chapel on the Campus, Baton Rouge, La.

Vera A. Cook Walsworth

Oct. 12, 1911 - Dec. 27, 2004

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Vera A. Cook Walsworth, 93, of Vidalia, La., who died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Gary Howington officiating.

Burial will be in the Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Comer Funeral Home Ferriday.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 pm. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Walsworth was born Oct. 12, 1911, in Bienville Parish, La., the daughter of the late James and Hattie N. Cook.

She was a member of First United Pentecostal Church of Ferriday and a resident of Concordia Parish for over 55 years. She worked for Ellis Five and Dime and retired from Holsum Bakery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willie Leamon Walsworth; four brothers; and eight sisters.

Survivors include her sons, James Walsworth and wife, Jean, and Kenneth Walsworth and wife, Ann, all of Natchez, and Bobby Walsworth and wife, Jewell, of Ferriday, La.; daughters, Irene Manchester and husband, Don, of Vidalia, La. and Imogene Robin and husband, Sylvan, of Ferriday; 14 grandchildren, Jennith Ann, Donnie, Von, Sonya, Tommy, Jamie, Jeremy, Stephanie, Dianne, Bobby Sue, Rene', Shane, Bridgett, and Brandon; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jamie Walsworth, Jeremy Walsworth, Donnie Manchester, Von Manchester, Shane Walsworth, and Brandon Walsworth.

Thomas E. "Tom" Prince Jr.

PINEVILLE - Services for Thomas E. "Tom" Prince Jr., 72, of Pineville, La., who died Friday December 24, 2004, at Rapides Regional Medical Center, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Hixson Brothers with the Rev. Wade Cummings officiating and with musical selections by the Rev. Clyde Grammon. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to the service time Teusday.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Natchez City cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until shortly before the service time at Laird Funeral Home.

Mr Prince was an area forester for the LSU Agricultural Extension Service. He worked for the Southern Heritage Museum as an associate and tour guide. While employed by LSU, he initiated the participation of the state of Louisiana in the National 4-H Forestry Invitational in Jackson Mills, West Virginia, and served on the comittee for promoting this program nationally. He was recognized in 1986 in Chicago for his outstanding contributions to the 4-H Forestry Program by International Paper Company Foundation. In 1993, he received the National Association County Agriculture Agents Distinguish Service Award in Baltimore, Md., for the state of Louisiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. Prince Sr. and Theresa Hummel Prince, and his sister Patricia Ruth Prince Phillips.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Dorothy Griffin Prince of Pineville; his son, Thomas E. Prince III; his daughter, Leah Prince Norwood and husband, Luke of Alexandria; his brothers, Thomas Elliot Doughty Jr. and wife, Sally, of Monroe and George Prince and his wife, Bobbette, of Monroe; his grandchildren, Lindsey Todd Powell and husband, Andrew, Haley Todd and thomas E. Prince IV and his great granddaughter, Carrie Powell.

Pall bearers will be Nemour P. Phillips Jr., Ted Doughty, George L. Prince, Andrew A. Prince, Scott Griffin and Ed Pippen.

Honorary pallbearers will be his circle of friends both professionally and personal.

Memorials may be made to the Louisiana 4-H Foundation, P.O. Box 25100, Baton Rouge, La. 70894 or to the American Cancer Society, 605C Medical Center Dr., Alexandria, La. 71301-8127.

Jerry Cooper

VIDALIA - Services for Jerry Cooper, 78, of Vidalia, who died Saturday, December 25, 2004, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Vidalia with the Rev. Dan Glenn and the Rev. Ralph Webber officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 2 p.m. to service time Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Cooper was born May 3, 1926 in Dunn, La., the son of Mark Ben Cooper and Anna Mae cagle Cooper.

Mr. Cooper was a loving Christian, father, husband and grandfather. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He was a graduate of Delhi High School, North East Junior College and the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He was employed with Thompson Drug Company in Delhi, La., from 1952 to 1960 and with Natchez Regional Hospital from 1960 until his retirement in 1988.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia and served as deacon and was a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Mississippi Pharmacists Associaition, American Pharmaceutical Association, American Society of Hospital Pharmacists and the Mississippi Society of Hospital Pharmacists.

Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Elizabeth Strausbury Cooper.

Survivors include his wife, Nell Burr Cooper of Vidalia; daughters, Deborah Kleinpeter and husband Jeff of Baton Rouge, La. and Sybil Duffey and Husband Robby of West Monroe, La.; step sons, Jimmy Burr of Jackson and Ronnie Burr and his wife Cathy of Vidalia; grandchildren, Jennifer Spillers Barton. Heather Spillers Devall and Taylor Kleinpeter all of Baton Rouge, La., and Patrick "Rick" O'Neal Jr. of West Monroe; great grandchildren Hunter, Cameron and Elizabeth Claire; four step grandchildren, four step great grandchildren; brother Clayton Cooper of Delhi and sisters, Pat Hart and Carolyn Duncan both of Monroe, La., and Laverne Watts of Hot Springs, Ark.

Pallbearers will be Tracey Burr, Reggie walker, Claire Shields, Buddy Spillers, Ricky Cooper and Clayton Cooper.

Annie R. Wilson

Funeral arrangements for Annie R. Wilson, 59, of New Orleans, formerly of Ferriday, La., who died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, are incomplete at Concordia Funeral Home.

Robert L. "Bob" Bruce

March 8, 1936 - Dec. 22, 2004

VIDALIA, La. - Services for Robert L. "Bob" Bruce, 68, of Vidalia, La., who died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, in Natchez, will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Glenn officiating.

Burial will be in the Oakgrove cemetery in Winnsboro, La. under the direction of Young's Funeral Home Vidalia.

Mr. Bruce was born Mar. 8, 1936, in Winnsboro, La., the son of Gracie Mae Bruce of Belmont, La. and the late Louis C. Bruce.

He was an Identifications Officer with the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office and was retired from the Vidalia Fire Department.

Bob began his law enforcement and firefighting career in 1968 after serving eight years with the U. S. Air Force. He started with the Vidalia Police Department, then later moved to the Vidalia Fire Department. In 1973, Bob received a call from the Sheriff's office wanting him to establish a communications system that would be on the air 24-hours a day. Shortly after the communications system was in place, he was assigned to develop an Identifications Division within the Sheriff's office. As this division grew so did his expertise in crime scene investigation and fingerprinting along with his reputation throughout the region for his proficiency in his field.

He is preceded in death by his father, Louis C. Bruce.

Survivors include his wife, Gwen Helmey Bruce of Vidalia, La.; mother, Gracie Mae Bruce of Belmont, La., brothers, Edward Bruce and wife, Margie, and Wesley Bruce and wife, Ann, all of Vidalia.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Bruce, John Bruce, Ricky Bruce, Brent Gore, Bill Stahlman, C. P. Cavin, and Randy Maxwell.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Vidalia Fire Department and local law enforcement.

Charles F. Wilson Jr.

Nov. 15, 1926 - Dec. 22, 2004

JONESVILLE, La. - Services for Charles F. Wilson Jr., 77, of Jonesville, who died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, in Pineville, La., will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell Hobbs, Rev. Mack Walker, and Rev. Dennis Relaford officiating.

Burial will be in the Locust Grove cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home Jonesville.

Visitation is from 12:30 p.m. until service time Sunday at the church.

Mr. Wilson was born Nov. 15, 1926, in Alexandria, La., the son of the late Charles F. Wilson Sr. and Ruth Evangeline Wilson. He was a resident of Jonesville, a retired cattleman and farmer. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Navy during WWII.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Donna Edna Wilson Stevens.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wilson of Jonesville; sons, Ronnie Wilson and wife, Sharon, of Wildsville, La. and Rodger Wilson and wife, Jackie, of Jonesville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Paul McClure, Tommy Joe McClure, Johnny Wilson, Lopez Wilson, Barry Rainy, and John McClure Jr.

Ronald Proby

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Ronald Proby, 47, of Ferriday, La., who died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, La., will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Concordia Funeral Home with the Rev. Justin Conner officiating.

Burial will be in the Ferriday cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home.

Survivors include two daughters; twelve brothers; two sisters; four grandchildren; and a number of aunts and uncles.

Walter O. Britt Jr.

HAMMOND, La. - Memorial services for Walter O. Britt, Jr., 51, of Hammond, La. and a native of Natchez, who died at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, will be held at a later date in Natchez and will be announced by Geisler Funeral Home of Hammond.

Mr. Britt is preceded in death by his father, Walter O. "Pete" Britt Sr.; and one brother, David Britt.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Britt of Hammond; mother, Margie Bailey of Baton Rouge, La., two sons, Jeremiah Britt of Hammond and Lance Normand of Albany; two daughters, Lisa Starkey of Pumpkin Center and Sheri Blakeney of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother, Eugene Britt of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Mary Jane Jackson of Wisner, La. and Linda Darlene Martin of Madison, Nev.; four half-brothers, Phil Kuhin, John Britt, Chris Britt, and Jamie Britt; two half-sisters, Lisa Britt and Patricia Britt, all of Houston, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Silas Book

JONESVILLE, La. - Services for Silas Book, 84, of Jonesville, La., who died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at Rapides General Medical Center Alexandria, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mayna Church of God with the Rev. Lloyd Trisler officiating.

Burial will be in the Deville cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home Jonesville.

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Mayna Church of God.

William H. Eubanks

WEST MONROE, La. - Funeral arrangements for William H. Eubanks, 67, of West Monroe, La., who died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe, La., are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Young's Funeral Home.

William "Jr." Harp

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for William "Jr." Harp, 74, of Covington, La., who died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at his residence, will be 2 p.m. today at Young's Funeral Home Ferriday with the Rev. Jon Daniels officiating.

Burial will be in the Abi Del Memorial cemetery in Monterey under the direction of Young's Funeral Home Ferriday.

Mr. Harp served 12 years with the Concordia Parish Sheriff Department. He retired as vice president of Offshore Production Contractors after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Ferriday Masonic Lodge No. 390 and a member of the Monterey First Baptist Church. He served in the Navy during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Howell Harp Sr. and his mother, Martha Smith McNeely; brothers, Homer "Buddy" Harp, Jimmy Harp, and Jack Harp; and grandson Hershel Hayden Harp.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Sharpe Harp of Covington; daughters, Tammy McCready of West Monroe, La. and Renee Buffington and husband, Billy, of Monticello; sons, Hal Harp and wife, Debbie, of Youngsville, La., Hershel Harp and wife, Jana, of Winona; step son, William Hensley III; stepdaughters, Carolyn Keen of Covington and Dianne Roussel of Slidell, La.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Martin, Jeff Martin, Chad Martin, David Ray Scruggs, Adam Morere and Joe Bryan.
