Frances Brown Smith, a retired employee of the Marriott Hotel, died Friday of kidney failure at Kindred Care Hospital. She was 79. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She was a member of St. Luke AME Church, where she served on the Usher Board. Survivors include two brothers, James Brown Sr. and Lawrence Brown Sr. A funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at First Evangeline Missionary Baptist Church, 1801 Willow St. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Holt cemetery. Littlejohn's Funeral Home handled arrangements.

SHELBY, JACK RICHARD JR.
March 29, 2002

Jack Richard Shelby Jr., a Jefferson Parish school bus driver, died Tuesday of heart failure at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 69. Mr. Shelby was born in New Orleans and lived in Avondale for the past 34 years. He graduated from Joseph S. Clark High School. He was an Army veteran. He was a parishioner of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Esther Shelby; four sons, Juan Sr., Norvel and Wayne Shelby, and Earl Harish; two sisters, Lucille Hollis and Kathlene Scott; and eight grandchildren. A Mass will be said Saturday at noon at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, 329 S. Jamie Blvd. in Avondale. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park. Littlejohn's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ROBINSON, FREDDIE
March 29, 2002

Freddie Robinson, a retired Army veteran, died Tuesday at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 84. Mr. Robinson was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He served in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Pearl Paul Robinson; two sons, Freddie Gerard and Kerry Martin Robinson; four daughters, Linda R. Johnson, Karen R. Honeycutt, and Dianne and Denise Robinson; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park.

NELSON, ISIAH ‘IKE'
March 29, 2002

Isiah "Ike" Nelson, a laborer, died Monday of liver cancer at West Jefferson Medical Center. He was 65. Mr. Nelson was born in Big Ben and lived in New Orleans for the past 60 years. Survivors include two brothers, Bobby Barker Sr. and Levy McGlory. A funeral will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church No. 2, 3928 Clematis St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Restlawn Park cemetery in Avondale. United Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

McMASTER, RONNIE FERNADO SR.
March 29, 2002

Ronnie Fernado McMaster Sr., a businessman and manager, died Sunday of a gunshot wound at St. Bernard Avenue and Owens Street. He was 36. Mr. McMaster was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from St. Augustine High School and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Southern University at New Orleans. He worked at the New Orleans Business and Industrial District, was a partner in Jazzland Amusement Park Concession and managed the singing group Gentle Touch. He was a parishioner of St. Monica Catholic Church. Survivors include his companion, Nicole S. Montrell; two sons, Ronnie F. McMaster Jr. and Ronnie Neal; a daughter, Calandra Lynne McMaster; his mother, Audrey J. Lee; two brothers, Bruce McMaster Jr. and Damon McMaster; two sisters, Nikki N. Lee and Stacey McMaster Henderson; and his grandmother, Pernella Jenkins. A funeral will be held Saturday at noon at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery.

LANE, RICHARD ‘MAIL MAN' ‘GIZ' ELLIS
March 29, 2002

Richard "Mail Man" "Giz" Ellis Lane, a retired mail carrier, died Sunday of lung cancer at Metropolitan Hospice. He was 70. Mr. Lane was born in Harvey and lived in New Orleans. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and Southern University. He was an Army veteran. He was a member of Evening Star Baptist Church, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and past master of Degruy Lodge No. 7 F&AM; Prince Hall Affiliations. Survivors include his wife, Hilda Carter Lane; a son, Russell Lane; two daughters, Trina and Keisha Lane; a sister, Ruby Lane Lewis; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Evening Star Baptist Church, 817 Grefer Ave., Harvey. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Restlawn cemetery in Avondale. Murray Henderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HOOPER, LLOYD ‘MICKEY'
March 29, 2002

Lloyd "Mickey" Hooper, a truck driver with Haynes Freight Co., died March 22 of lung cancer at McGregor Jones Nursing Facility. He was 59. Mr. Hooper was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a former employee of Southern Eagle Sales, Dixie Brewery and Falstaff. He was a member of Mighty 14 Social and Pleasure Club. Survivors include his wife, Dianne H. Hooper; four sons, Toney Hooper of San Antonio, and Gregory, Matthew and Michael Hooper; three daughters, Margaret and Karen Hooper of Tylertown, Miss., and Jacqueline Jinks of Mobile, Ala.; his father, Daniel Hooper; a brother, Johnny Hooper; three sisters, Joann Hart of Syracuse, N.Y., Lena H. Thorton and Diane Lee; and 12 grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave. Visitation will be at 8 a.m. Burial will be in St. Louis cemetery No. 3.

KELLY, ANTHONY
March 29, 2002

Anthony Kelly, a student, died Saturday at Charity Hospital of injuries from a hit-and-run automobile accident. He was 9. Mr. Kelly was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended Harriet Tubman Elementary School and Payne's Day Care Center. Survivors include his father, Anthony Gilbert Jr.; his mother, June Marie Kelly; his stepfather, Reginald Williams; two sisters, Bernadette Kelly and Reginisha Williams; and his grandparents, Albert and Marguerite Kelly. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Israelite Divine Spiritual Church, 3000 Frenchmen St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. HINTON, MARY J.
March 29, 2002

Mary J. Hinton, a domestic worker, died March 21 of heart failure at St. Charles General Hospital. She was 74. Mrs. Hinton was born in Aliceville, Ala., and lived in New Orleans for the past 41 years. She was a member of Gaza Missionary Baptist Church and Household of Ruth Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include a son, Robert Carpenter; three daughters, Cherokee J. Sincere, Mary H. Smith and Eulah Mims; a brother, Gus Jones; three sisters, Grace Brumfield, Betty Bonnier and Evelyn Evans; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Gaza Missionary Baptist Church, 7258 Ransom St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Littlejohn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CHASE, HERBEN
March 29, 2002

Herben Chase, a security guard for Bollinger Shipyards and A.J. Warehouse, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest at Memorial Medical Center. He was 59. Mr. Chase was born in New Orleans and lived in Gretna. He graduated from Xavier Preparatory School and Booker T. Washington High School. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Gretna. Survivors include his mother, Thelma H. Franklin; and his stepfather, Matthew Franklin. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 434 Seventh St., Gretna. Burial will be in McDonoghville cemetery. BIBBINS, CURTIS LAVOR SR.
March 29, 2002

Curtis Lavor Bibbins Sr., a student at Delgado Community College, died March 22 of a gunshot wound on Interstate 55 in St. John the Baptist Parish. He was 20. Mr. Bibbins was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He was previously employed at Sav-A-Center. He was a member of the Desire Community Center League, the Trinity League and Rosenwald Gym. Survivors include a son, Curtis Bibbins Jr.; his mother, Katrina B. Dowell; his stepfathers, Anthony Dowell and Ronald Washington; a brother, Ronald Bibbins; a sister, Cyndi Thomas; two stepsisters, Heidi Thompson and Anthonika Wilson; and his grandparents, William Johnson, Hannah S. Bibbins and John and Bobbie Thomas. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. James Methodist Church of Louisiana, 1925 Ursulines Ave. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park cemetery. D.W. BETHEA, MORRISON CURTIS
March 29, 2002

Morrison Curtis Bethea, a student at Washington and Lee University, died Tuesday in New Orleans. He was 22. Mr. Bethea was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a cum laude graduate of Metairie Park Country Day School and a member of the Academic Honor Society. He was on the dean's list at Washington and Lee University. He had been an intern at J.C. Bradford and Co. in New Orleans and at Bear Stearns in New York. He was the Louisiana high school golf champion in 1998, captain of the varsity golf team and a member of the Scholar Athletic Academic Honor Roll at Washington and Lee, received the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Conference Academic Award and was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and the Williams Investment Society. Survivors include his father, Morrison Curtis Bethea; his mother, Brenda Gooch Bethea; a brother, Theodore Cobb Bethea II; and a sister, Nancy Bethea Howell. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Ave. Visitation will begin at noon at Trinity Parish House. Burial will be in Metairie cemetery. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
