CANFILL, THE REV. DARYL
May 17, 2001

Father Canfill, aided recovering alcoholics
The Rev. Daryl Canfill, an Episcopal priest and missionary who devoted the last years of his career to helping recovering alcoholics, died Sunday of lung cancer at his home in Kenner. He was 63.
Father Canfill was born in New Orleans and graduated from St. Martin's Episcopal School. After graduating from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., he went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and earned a master's degree in theology.
Father Canfill served parishes in Baton Rouge and Huntsville, Ala., and was chaplain at the University of the South. From 1984 to 1990, he was a parish priest and archdeacon in the African republic of Namibia.
Father Canfill was serving as rector of Church of the Holy Comforter in Gentilly in the mid-1990s when a former parishioner in Baton Rouge, citing a long-repressed memory, filed suit alleging Father Canfill had sexually abused him in the 1960s. Father Canfill's superior, Bishop James Brown, publicly urged him to resign, but the parish stood behind Father Canfill despite losses in membership. The suit was dismissed in 1997 for being filed too late.
Father Canfill retired from Holy Comforter in 1998. At the time of his death, he was filling a temporary position at St. John's Episcopal Church in Kenner.
Acknowledging his own successful struggle with alcohol, Father Canfill developed a ministry for recovering substance abusers. A halfway house in New Orleans operated by the Volunteers of America is named after him. He also developed a ministry for prisoners at Angola.
Father Canfill had no immediate survivors. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 2919 St. Charles Ave.

Frankie Brent, 68, comedian, singer
September 3, 2002

Frankie Brent, a comedian and singer once dubbed "Metairie's own Al Martino and Don Rickles rolled into one" by a local newspaper, died Aug. 26 of a heart attack at his home. He was 68.
Mr. Brent once owned a Utica Street nightclub called Frankie Brent's Club. During the club's heyday in the mid-1970s and early ‘80s, he often performed twice a night, six days a week. His shows featured heavy doses of humor -- most of it at the expense of his audience -- and music, as Mr. Brent sang classics such as "My Way" and "Momma." The club was colorful, with purple shag carpet on its walls and floor accented by purple, white and orange curtains; its owner was more so. Mr. Brent wore his hair big, his pants tight and his shirts open to reveal his hairy chest and a gold Italian horn around his neck.
"I'm really a gentle guy, even a little shy, " Mr. Brent said in a 1976 interview with The States-Item. "But you put a microphone in my hand and I'm Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan rolled into one tiny Italian body."
Mr. Brent was born Adolph F. Gambino Jr. in South Philadelphia. He hit the nightclub circuit at 17, playing bass for early ‘50s rock group Freddie Bell and the Bellboys. In the mid-'60s, he came to Metairie with his own act and fell for Louisiana.
"The warmest, best people in the world live here, " Mr. Brent told The States-Item. "They took me in like a native son."
In 1974, Mr. Brent reigned as king of the Krewe of Athena.
Survivors include a daughter, Nicole Gambino, and a sister, Lorraine DiBianca. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Mausoleum.

G.E. Arnold, 73, news photographer
February 11, 2003

G.E. Arnold, a hard-driving photographer for The Times-Picayune who made it his business to reach fires and crime scenes ahead of the competition, died Saturday at Ochsner Foundation Hospital of complications from a stroke. He was 73.
Even after retiring in 1995 after a 34-year career with the newspaper, Mr. Arnold still called his colleagues to tip them off to killings or spectacular blazes, and he occasionally submitted pictures, photo editor Doug Parker said.
"He was the last of a breed, a type of photographer who lived and died by the scanner, " Parker said.
"G.E. was all work, all the time, " longtime colleague Bryan Berteaux said. "He could be off duty, but he'd still beat you to a news assignment."
Mr. Arnold won awards and respect for his spot-news images, including those he shot while trapped by flying bullets during the 1973 sniper attack from a downtown Howard Johnson's hotel. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his photos from the shooting, and his photos throughout the years received awards from the National Press Photographers Association, the Louisiana Press Association and Associated Press Managing Editors.
Mr. Arnold said once that he was fondest of his "pretty" pictures, whether they were landscapes, sunsets or portraits of children.
"He would go seamlessly from shooting crime scenes to shooting architectural pictures or a travel story, " Parker said. "He had professional pride and a work ethic that was burned into him."
Mr. Arnold, whose initials stood for Gerald Eldridge, was born in Seminole, Okla., but moved to New Orleans in his youth. After finishing high school, he got a job in a drafting firm, but he always carried a cheap camera with him. One day, while riding the streetcar to work, he saw a wrecked automobile whose driver was trapped inside. He jumped off, shot the picture and took it to the paper, which published it.
His career was set. Mr. Arnold, who also served four years in the Army National Guard, became a freelance photographer, and colleagues date his competitive spirit to this period.
From 1954 to 1961, he was a photographer and, later, assistant investigator for the coroner's office. When he moved on to The Times-Picayune, he used the contacts he had developed with police officers and firefighters to gain access to crime and fire scenes. "My philosophy was to carry a little camera and walk softly, " Mr. Arnold said.
People, though, always came before the photos. In 1964 he rescued a woman from her burning home before taking any photos. He was a mentor to fledgling photographers. "There's a little bit of G.E.'s blood in all of us, " newspaper photographer Eliot Kamenitz said, "but there's only one G.E."
Robert Steiner, an assistant photo editor at the Times-Picayune who worked with Mr. Arnold for more than 30 years, said Mr. Arnold's photography, as well as his printing technique, were unique. His printing technique drew the reader's eyes' right to the subject matter, Steiner said.
"He was just a mentor to everyone, " Steiner said. "Everyone wanted to be like him."
Survivors include four sons, Jerry, Paul, Kenny and Timmy Arnold; a daughter, Janet Brennan; 15 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A Mass will be said Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie cemetery.
