Leonard S. Isacks, noted home builder
October 16, 2001

Leonard Scott Isacks, a noted builder of high-end homes in Old Metairie and the Garden District who was among the first local builders to use termite-proof construction materials, died Sunday of cardiac arrest at Kenner Regional Medical Center. He was 62.
In the nearly 30 years since he launched his business, Isacks Construction Co. Inc., Mr. Isacks carved out a reputation for custom construction and renovation of some of the area's grandest homes. Mr. Isacks' creations had price tags from $350, 000 to more than $1 million.
As the front of Formosan termites bore down on New Orleans, Mr. Isacks became one of the first local builders to use anti-termite treated wood.
"He insisted on perfection, " said Harry Kelleher Jr., a longtime friend. "He believed in quality millwork and quality masonry."
Throughout his career, Mr. Isacks followed his own vision of premier home construction, even in adverse market conditions, Kelleher said.
Mr. Isacks left a successful job as vice president of Hill-Behan Lumber Co., where he is credited with modernizing and expanding the company's treated-wood and millwork operations, to launch his own business in the early 1980s.
Years ago, Mr. Isack's two sons, Leonard Scott Isacks Jr. and Fletcher Bryan Isacks, both of Metairie, joined their father in the home-construction business.
After attending Isidore Newman School and graduating from the Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala., Mr. Isacks attended Tulane University and joined the Marine Corps in 1958.
While a cadet in basic training, Mr. Isacks rescued several recruits from a burning munitions storage building as fire whipped through the structure and heavy artillery erupted around him. For his act of bravery, he received the Marines' highest peacetime award, the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct.
Mr. Isacks, who was a member of the Southern Yacht Club, the Boston Club and the Louisiana Club, also was active in an alumni chapter of his fraternity, Kappa Alpha.
In addition to his two sons, survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ewin Isacks of Metairie; a stepson, George Woodward Oge III of Dallas; a stepdaughter, Catherine Oge Turlington of Houston; two brothers, Bryan Leonard Isacks of Ithaca, N.Y., and Maunsel White of Seagrove Beach, Fla.; a sister, Susan Isacks Fitzhugh of Seattle; and three grandchildren.
