Charlene Spann Bacchus, a retired Sears, Roebuck and Co. technician, died Tuesday of complications from leukemia at Tulane Medical Center. She was 50. Mrs. Bacchus was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She had received the Sears Appreciation award, had been sergeant at arms at the St. Mary of the Angels School and a member of the Black Panthers. Survivors include a son, Warren Bacchus Jr.; a daughter, Tamyra Bacchus; her mother, Jean Washington; a brother, Donald Martin; a sister, Gail Henry; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Prayer of Faith Full Gospel Baptist Church, 4501 Downman Road. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Boissiere-Labat Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
SLUGHER, ELAINE ROSEMARY SPADONI

Elaine Rosemary Spadoni Slugher, a homemaker, died Monday of a heart attack at Charity Hospital. She was 71. Mrs. Slugher was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She received awards for chaperoning at Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School. She was a parishioner of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Jimmie Slugher Sr.; three sons, Kevin Slugher of Fremont, Calif., and Jimmie Jr. and Eric Slugher; two daughters, Linda Landix and Rocquel Slugher; a brother, John Spadoni Jr. of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Theresa Harris of New York and Betty Duplantier; 19 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 1923 St. Philip St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Roch cemetery No. 2. John Slack Jr., a longshoreman, died of undetermined causes Thursday at his home. He was 63. Mr. Slack was born in Wilkinson County, Miss., and lived in New Orleans for the past 40 years. He attended Amite County High School. He was an usher at New Hope Baptist Church. He was a member of Longshoreman Local No. 3000. Survivors include three sons, Shelton, Raymond and John Slack III; a daughter, Riesh Moten; his mother, Julia Slack; two brothers, Samuel and Jerry Slack; a sister, Dora Slack; and 12 grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 1807 LaSalle St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Emory Hill cemetery in Centreville, Miss. Claudia H. Nicosia, a homemaker, died Friday at East Jefferson General Hospital. She was 80. Mr. Nicosia was born in Henryetta, Okla., and lived in Metairie for the past 50 years. She was a parishioner of St. Clement of Rome Church. Survivors include her husband, Anthony E. Nicosia; a son, Michael Nicosia; four daughters, Evelyn Rigdon, Toni Granat, Beth Cashio and Chris Nicosia McKinnon; a sister, Anna H. Farris; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A rosary service will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Paul Joseph Myers, owner of AM/PM Towing Co., died Saturday of cancer at his home. He was 54. Mr. Myers was born in New Orleans and lived in Kenner for the past 26 years. He was a member of the Retired Asbestos Workers Local No. 53. Survivors include his wife, Linda P. Myers; a son, Paul J. Myers Jr.; and a daughter, Linda A. Pardee. Sarah Gilbert Wahlig, a retired clerk, died Friday at Metropolitan Hospice. She was 76. Mrs. Wahlig was born in Alexandria and lived in River Ridge. Survivors include a son, Paul McNeill; a brother, Joseph Gilbert; and five sisters, Mary Byrd, Hilda Pianta, Catherine Bellomo, Janice Gilbert and Cecilia Becker. Earl "Sonny" Forrester Lopresto, a retired electrician for the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board, died Wednesday of complications from diabetes at Chalmette Medical Center. He was 64. Mr. Lopresto was born in New Orleans and lived in Chalmette for the past 16 years. He served in the Army National Guard. Survivors include a son, David Earl Lopresto; a daughter, Carol Lopresto Angelo; and a grandchild. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Melva Mae Lipps, a retired teacher and seamstress, died Wednesday at River Parish Hospital in LaPlace. She was 77. Ms. Lipps was born in Reserve and lived in LaPlace for the past 2½ years. She attended Southern University in Baton Rouge. She was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court No. 73, an honorary member of the Krewe of Agape Carnival Club and Our Lady of Grace 5 O'Clock Choir. Survivors include a son, Louis Lipps Jr. of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Sybil Marie Lipps of LaPlace; and three grandchildren. A Mass will be said Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 772 Louisiana 44, Reserve. Samuel A. Lee, an oil refinery supervisor, died Thursday of heart failure at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 69. Mr. Lee was born in Picayune, Miss., and lived in Chalmette for many years. He was a member of St. Bernard Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Wayne Lee of Chalmette; a daughter, Mavis Scarcello of Fort Worth, Texas; a brother, Clarence Lee of Bienville community; three sisters, Lilly Blackwell of Bienville community, Lorene Necaise of Gulfport, Miss., and Pauline Chandler of Sumrall, Miss.; and three grandchildren. Betie Holmes Kroger, a homemaker, died Oct. 19 of heart failure at Sierra Vista Regional Health Center in Sierra Vista, Ariz. She was 71. Mrs. Kroger was born in Jasper County, Texas, and lived in Mandeville for the past 36 years. Survivors include three sons, Dr. Thomas "Ed" E. Kroger of Sierre Vista, Ariz., and Richard L. and Dennis W. Kroger; a daughter, Donna K. Degionanne; two sisters, Alberta Clerico and Verna Newman; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Hewett was born in Brunswick County, N.C., and lived in New Orleans for 60 years and Terrytown for the past 2 months. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include a goddaughter, Iva Goins-Green. Daniel J. Granier, a retired plant foreman for Red Star Yeast Co., died Friday of cardiac arrest at Meadowcrest Hospital. He was 81. Mr. Granier was a lifelong West Bank resident. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 2105 and the American Legion Post No. 218. Mr. Granier served as an Army corporal during World War II and received a Purple Heart. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Thornton Granier; two daughters, Diane Harker and Debra Perrin; two sisters, Rosalie Cambre and Nancy Picard Donahue; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 West Bank Expressway, Harvey. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
