After a long and ferocious struggle against brain cancer, Sheila Dianne Wells Coyle passed away on Wednesday, September 21st, 2011. Sheila loved this world so passionately that she was loathe to leave it, fighting back valiantly until the end. Her life was an ever widening circle of love that touched all who knew her. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Plain Dealing with the Reverend William H. Searight and Reverend Art Vance officiating. Burial will be at Cottage Grove Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Friday, September 23rd, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home in Plain Dealing. Sheila was born New Years Day, 1946, to Helen Malone Wells and Leroy “Punkin “ Wells. She graduated from Plain Dealing High School in 1963. After receiving her degree in education from Northwestern State University, Sheila began a rewarding career as an elementary school teacher in Caddo and Bossier Parishes. In 1966, she married her childhood sweetheart, Charles Graves “Gravy” Coyle. After the birth of their son Charlie, Sheila and Gravy moved to the Strayhan ancestral home place in the Brushy community south of Plain Dealing. Together with Charlie and their daughter Maggie, Gravy and Sheila built a wonderful home full of love and beauty. Sheila was blessed with many varied gifts. She was a wonderful teacher. She taught for 26 years, touching the lives of numerous children and sometimes their children. She retired in 1999. She loved her church and served her denomination on the local, regional and national levels. She was a member of Cottage Grove Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder. Sheila also served on many Presbytery committees, she served a term as Moderator of the Presbytery of the Pines, and was honored to be chosen as a delegate to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA and to serve for several years on the national General Assembly Council. She was a gifted artist, loved interior decorating and landscape gardening. She was also a gourmet cook, renowned for her gumbo suppers at the camp on Thanksgiving weekends and her elegant annual Christmas dinner parties. She was an excellent bridge player and relished the challenge of working the most difficult of New York Times Crossword Puzzles. A lover of literature, she was a founding member of the Reading Women Book Club of Plain Dealing. A country woman at heart, Sheila savored every sunrise, every phase of the moon, and every subtle change of the season. She loved to laugh and have fun but also treasured long and intimate conversations. Although Sheila was quiet and unpretentious, she drew people to her because of her capacity for compassion and the rare depth of her understanding heart. We honor her memory by giving back the love she gave, so that her legacy will shine in the lives of those she loved as the circle goes on and on. Sheila’s family would like to thank all those whose prayers and presence provided so much consolation to her during the long months of her illness: the community of the Presbyterian Churches of Plain Dealing; to all the friends from far and near who were there for Sheila; to Meece Henderson; the staff of Christus Schumpurt, Dubuis, MD Anderson, and Grace Home in Shreveport. Blest be the tie that binds. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Punkin Wells.
