February 18, 1940 - December 29, 2012

Springhill, LA - Funeral services for Mrs. Samie Burns Mayfield, age 72, will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Springhill, LA with Bro. Jesse Dickison and Bro. Keith Shofner officiating. Interment will follow in Old Town Cemetery, Haynesville, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 1, 2013 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mayfield was born on February 18, 1940 in Haynesville, LA and passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2012 in Shreveport, LA. She was a faithful member of the North Arkansas Street Church of Christ and was a homemaker. She loved watching football, especially LSU and the Dallas Cowboys. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Huey Mayfield; sons, Keith Mayfield and wife, Marty of Shreveport, LA, Scott Mayfield and wife, Toni of South Lake, TX; grandson, Jared Mayfield and granddaughter, Lauren Mayfield both of Shreveport, LA; sister-in-law, Hazel Burns of Amarillo, TX; brother-in-law, Jerry Mayfield and wife, Lynn of Houston, TX; several nieces and nephews; special cousin, Janis Hollan of Haynesville, LA; three special friends, Sarah Dooly and family, Freda Jones and husband, Mike, all of Sarepta, LA and Esther Dunn of Springhill, LA. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hoyle and Christine Kendrick Latta and brother, Phillip Burns.

Pallbearers will be Jared Mayfield, Bruce Griffin, Mike Jones, Toby Dooly, Tony Houck and Jerry Mayfield.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to members of the North Arkansas Street Church of Christ, the staff of Willis Knighton Pierremont, Dr. Dan Moller, Dr. Paul Schuler, Dr. Randall Brewer, Dr. Sally Ball, Dr. Craig Springmeyer, Dr. Ed Morgan, Dr. Robert Hernandez, and Dr. Michael Futrell for their care and support.

James Samuel Allen

December 20, 2008

Cotton Valley, LA - James Samuel Allen died at his beloved Mini Acres Farm, Cotton Valley, LA on Saturday, December 20, 2008. He was 95 years old.

Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Porter Allen and a son, Richard Patterson Allen.

Survivors include his son, Mike Allen and wife, Camille of Springhill, LA; daughter, Virginia Gustin and husband, Quintin of Morganza, LA. He was adored by seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at a later date at St. John?s Episcopal Church Memorial Garden, Minden, LA.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Allen requested memorials be sent to St John?s Episcopal Church, 1107 Broadway, Minden, LA 71055 or to Boy?s Home, 306 Boy?s Home Road, Covington, VA 24426. Mr. Allen lived in the boy?s home from infancy to adulthood.

Eugene Johnson
September 10, 1928 - December 27, 2012

Memorial services for Mr. Eugene Johnson, age 84, will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, January 1, 2013 in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Cotton Valley, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held Monday, December 31, 2012, from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Johnson was born on September 10, 1928 to Roy and Virgie Pickett Johnson in Shongaloo, LA and passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2012 in Springhill, LA. He was retired from the LA Army Ammunition Plant and was an US Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Johnson lived to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Faye McCray Johnson; two sons, Ricky Wayne Johnson of Cotton Valley, LA, William Allen Johnson of Taylor, AR; two daughters, Shirley Johnson Wallace of Magnolia, AR, Sarah Lemons and husband, Greg of Cotton Valley, LA; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Irma Teutch of Haughton, LA, Nettie Shriner of Fargo, ND, Sandra Johnson; two brothers, Joseph Johnson of Springhill, LA, Carlton Johnson of Saline, LA and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Cartis Johnson.

Rev. B. L. Dinkins

January 18, 1919 - January 17, 2013

Funeral services for Rev. B. L. Dinkins, age 93, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Plain Dealing Assembly of God Church with Rev. Andy Harris, Rev. Lewis Jackson and Rev. Elyse Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Plain Dealing, LA.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M., at Bailey Funeral Home in Plain Dealing, LA.

Rev. Dinkins was born on January 18, 1919 to Eugene Sanderson and Maude Pearl Lane Dinkins in Bradley, AR and passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Pasadena, TX. He was a former resident of Plain Dealing and had made his home in Deer Park, TX the past two years. He is a retired minister and served as pastor at Mott Assembly of God for 30 years, retiring in 2010. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jessie Florien Slack Dinkins, on February 4, 2011; his parents; two sisters and nine brothers.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda Sparks and Pam Earls, both of Deer Park, TX; sons, Thurman Dinkins of Coushatta, LA and Don Dinkins of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren; his brother, Melbourne Dinkins of Bradley, AR and a host of nieces and nephews.

Harold Matthew Branton
June 13, 1921 - December 29, 2012

Harold Matthew Branton, 91, of Shongaloo, Louisiana, passed away on December 29th in Houston, Texas.

Visitation will be at Bailey Funeral Home in Springhill, Louisiana, on January 4, 2013, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be held at Mt. Paran Baptist Church in Shongaloo at 2:00 p.m. on January 5, 2013. Military honors and burial will follow at Union Springs Cemetery.

Harold Matthew Branton was born in Shongaloo, Louisiana, to Marion and Addie Mae Branton on June 13, 1921. He graduated from Shongaloo High School in 1940 and graduated from Louisiana State University in 1943 where he served in the ROTC program as Battalion Commander. Upon his commission as second lieutenant and assignment to combat duties in the United States Army, European Theatre of WWII, he fought bravely as an officer of G Company, 409th Infantry Regiment, 103rd Infantry Division.

Harold Branton served his country as an infantry officer for twenty-four years. His active duty years spanned WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. Significant assignments during his Army career included: WWII Western European Campaign; Battle of the Bulge and Siegfried Line, Counter Intelligence in Occupied Germany, Korea Reorganized Campaign, Foreign Security in Tokyo, Japan, Coordinator of USA JROTC operations, Asst G1 Berlin Command during the time that the Berlin Wall was erected. Lt. Colonel Branton wrote field manuals for NATO, and later developed strategies and tactics for initial Army Air Assault operations while serving as Projects Officer in Arms Development Command at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

During his tenure with the US ARMY, Harold Branton received numerous decorations, medals and badges, including three Bronze medals for bravery, Expert and Combat Infantry Badges, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Army Meritorious Service Medal. From his many citations, he received recognition from General Creighton Abrams, General I. D. White, Major General Christian Clarke, and Major General Harry Lemley, and others.

After his military retirement in 1966 as lieutenant colonel senior grade, Harold completed post-graduate coursework in history at the University of Kansas and became a successful real estate broker and insurance salesman in Shreveport, Louisiana, and Kerrville, Texas. He wrote several books on military subjects. Harold was an active church member, deacon or Bible study teacher in local churches wherever he lived, but he always had special affection for his home church, Mt. Paran Baptist Church in Shongaloo, Louisiana. His hobbies involved building or remodeling churches in addition to grounds improvements on church, missionary, cemetery and parsonage sites. He actively supported the American Legion, the Wounded Warriors Program, 103d Infantry Division Association, as well as conservative, political, and Christian organizations. Harold gave generously from his vegetable garden each season, counting it a joy to share his annual harvest with his family and neighbors.

Harold Branton is preceded in death by his brother Parey P. Branton of Shongaloo, and his sister Dorothy Patton of Shreveport both of whom died in summer of 2011, and his niece Kathy Mae Cobb Woodson of Shreveport who died in 2004.

Harold Branton is survived by his wife and life companion of 69 years, Elsie Bennett Branton of Anniston, Alabama and his four daughters, Ann Branton of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Gail Holder (Charles) of Orlando, Florida, Bobbie Murray (Blair) of Kerrville, Texas, and Kay Freeman (Steve) of New Caney, Texas, and his sister Mutelle Thompson of Springhill. His grandchildren are Jason Holder (Kelly), Jeremy Holder (Jamie), Joshua Murray (Crystal), Miles Murray (Valerie), Michael Freeman (Lauren), Sarah Freeman, Mark Freeman, and Katherine Freeman. Great-grandchildren are Jake Holder, Cody Holder, Lily Mae Holder, Madelyn Holder, Mason Holder, Hudson Murray, Griffin Murray, and Violet Freeman. Extended family includes sister-in-law Georgia Lusby Branton of Shongaloo, nephews Daniel Branton of Ruston and Parey Branton, Jr., of Shongaloo, Jack Crace, of Shreveport and niece, Pat Turner of Amarillo, Texas, and their children and his cousin Ronny Martin of Shreveport.

Serving as pallbearers will be Major Jason Holder, Joshua Murray, Jeremy Holder, Michael Freeman, Captain Miles Murray and Lieutenant Mark Freeman. Honorary pallbearers will be Hammer Washington, Ronny Martin, Jack Crace, Daniel Martin, Parey Branton, Jr and Perry Wall.

March 7, 1940 - January 17, 2013

Funeral services for Mr. W.L. Toms, age 72, will be held Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Springhill, with Rev. Todd Pickard and Rev. Lynn Shaffer officiating. Interment will follow in Springhill Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will be Saturday at 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mr. Toms was born March 7, 1940 in Taylor, AR to George “Buddy” Desmond and Verdell Burns Toms and passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Springhill, LA. He was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of the Baptist faith and was a mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, of 49 years, Patsy McBryde Toms of Springhill, LA; daughter, Kim Toms Kerry of Springhill; sons, Anthony “Bubba” Toms and wife, Kristi of Springhill, LA, Kirk Toms and wife, Jennifer of Springhill, LA; sisters, Joy Wilson of Sarepta, LA; four grandchildren, Alexis Kerry, Destinee Toms, Kenley Toms, Kyleigh Mason, soon to be grandson, Tucker Lee Toms and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Toms was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Melvin Toms.

Serving as pallbearers will be Carey Heaster, Randy Toms, Jimmy Toms, Ricky Toms, Bill Nipper and Chris Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Thomas, George Robert Stuart, Willie “Butch” Lynd and Jerry Stephens.
