November 25, 1920 - February 15, 2011

Funeral services for Mr. Marvin James Avera, age 90, will be held Friday, February 18, 2011 at 10:00 AM in the Springhill United Methodist Church with Dr. Doug Baker, pastor of Marvin United Methodist Church, Tyler, TX and Rev. Walter Parker officiating. Interment will follow in Springhill Cemetery with military graveside rites under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will begin Thursday at 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Bailey Funeral Home.

Mr. Avera was born November 25, 1920 in Manning, AR to Marvin James and Irma Mae Webb Avera, Sr and passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011 in Shreveport, LA. He was a lifelong resident of Springhill; a faithful member of the Springhill United Methodist Church and a retired service manager from Springhill Motor Company with 69 years of service. Mr. Avera was an US Army veteran, serving in WW II and Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of many awards from General Motors for his years of Dedication and Service. Mr. Avera was also a member of Banks-Strong American Legion Post #166 and loved fishing, watching LSU, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints football games. He was a loving husband and father.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Imogene "Jean" Waggoner Avera of Springhill, LA and daughter, Mitzie Jean Avera of Tyler, TX.

Pallbearers will be Bob Colvin, James Colvin, L.V. "Buddy" Wright, Chad Lloyd, Ronnie Johnson and Randall Salmon. Honorary pallbearers will be other employees of Springhill Motor Company.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Springhill United Methodist Church Pew Fund; Marvin United Methodist Church, Mission Department, 300 West Erwin Dr., Tyler, TX 75702 or PATH, 402 W. Front St., Tyler, TX 75702

Carl Lee Craig

November 30, 1926 - March 22, 2012

Funeral services for Carl Lee Craig, 85, will be held Sunday, March 25, 2012, 2:00 PM at the Haynesville United Methodist Church, Haynesville, LA with Bro. John Korlaske officiating. Burial will follow the service at Shady Grove Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Haynesville, LA.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 5:00 pm 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Craig passed away after a short illness at the Homer Memorial Hospital on Thursday, March 22, 2012. He was born in Haynesville, LA to Will Tracy and Sudie Holland Craig on November 30, 1926. Mr. Craig was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was also a faithful member of the Methodist Church. Carl could spend hours visiting and remembering old times. Mr. Craig was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joe Craig.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Martha Bond Craig of Haynesville, La; two sons, Steve Craig & wife, Jill of Haynesville, LA and Tim Craig & wife, Georgie of Jackson, MS; one daughter Bronwyn Sneed & husband, Donnie of Magnolia, AR; five grandchildren, Crystal Evans & husband, Harold, Jamie McDonald & husband, Chip, Whitney Emrich & husband, John, Shelby Sneed and Sydney Sneed; five great grandchildren, Michelle and Austin McDonald, Christian and Andrew Evans, and Porter Emrich; one brother, Calvin Craig & wife Bonnie and one sister-in-law, Delores Craig.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Craig, Tracy Craig, Chris Craig, Mike Craig, Lester Roan, Lance Roan, Caleb House, and Colby House.

Wilbern Fate Vaughan

October 21, 1930 - September 4, 2011

Funeral services for Wilbern Fate Vaughan, age 80, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 9, 2011 in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Springhill, LA with Rev. Gladney Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in Western Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Mr. Vaughan was born October 21, 1930 to Gus and Bertha Sewell Vaughan and died on Sunday, September 4, 2011 in Shreveport, LA. He was a lifelong resident of this area, a veteran, having served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was a former employee of International Paper Company. He also had a career in carpentry work, loved to tend to his garden, shelling peas, picking out pecans, going hunting and fishing. He will be remembered as a loving husband, daddy, grandpa, great-grandpa and uncle.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, N. Alverne Vaughan; daughter, Rebecca Stephens and husband, Jeff of Lake Erling, Stateline Community; son, Rodney Vaughan and wife, Rita of Shongaloo, LA; brother, Elton Vaughan and wife, Lila of Plain Dealing, LA and sister, Lois Flores of Emerson, AR; grandchildren, Danna Flint and husband, Michael; Jamie Morgan; Brian Tannehill and wife, Staci, Kerri Patterson and husband, Larry; and Holli Stephens; great-grandchildren, Laneston, Dakota, Mathew, Drew, Kaci, Karli and a host of nephews, nieces and other loved ones. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Aurilla Caswell and Thera Belle Modisette; brothers, Burke Vaughan, Arno Vaughan and D. D. Vaughan.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jim Cooper, Jeremy Cooper, Greg Lee, Chris Stewart, Greg Vaughan and David Lowe. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Vaughan, Jonathan Vaughan, Terry Stephens and Mike W. Vaughan.

Sherry Newsom

January 22, 1953 - August 29, 2011

Funeral services for Ms. Sherry Newsom, age 58, will be held Friday, September 2, 2011 at 10:00 AM in New Sarepta Baptist Church with Rev. Marty Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Shongaloo, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will begin Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Ms. Newsom was born January 22, 1953 to Prentis Harold and Jeane Byram Newsom and passed away Monday, August 29, 2011 in Bossier City, LA. She was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of New Sarepta Baptist Church and a former employee of Claiborne Parish Health Department.

She is survived by her parents; her grandmother, Edith Mrs. Jimmie Byram of Sarepta, LA; her brothers and sisters, Stephen Dean Newsom and wife, Debbie of DeRidder, LA, Sylvia Newsom McKinney and husband, George of Rocky Mt., LA, Stanley W. Newsom and wife, Jane of Sarepta, LA, Susan Newsom Janik and husband, Mark of Houston, TX and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Aaron McKinney, Brent Newsom, Mark Newsom, Jared Newsom, Lance Newsom and Chad Newsom.

Wanda Bowley Nix
February 23, 1935 - July 2, 2012

Funeral services for Mrs. Wanda Bowley Nix , age 77, will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, July 6, 2012, at the Trinity Trail Cowboy Church, with Rev. Roy Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in Plain Dealing Cemetery, Plain Dealing, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Plain Dealing, LA.

Mrs. Nix was born on February 23, 1935 to William and Minnie Clayton Bowley in Louisville, KY and passed away on July 2, 2012 in Vivian, LA. She was a resident of Plain Dealing and a homemaker.

Mrs. Nix is survived by two daughters, Jeannette Malone and husband, Ronald of Plain Dealing, LA, Jean Lowe of IL; son, Johnney Burkes of Shreveport, LA; seven grandchildren, Abel Flores of Pomona, CA, Joshua Flores of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Keaton Burkes of Denver, CO, William Burkes of IL, Shyla Wagner of IL, Brandy Wagner of IL, Angela Wagner of IL; thirteen great-grandchildren; sister, Imogene Conrad and husband, Glen of CA and host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents and husbands, Johnney Burkes, Wayne Wright and Andy Nix.

Graveside services for Mrs. Christine A. Lopez, age 90, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, May 23, 2011 at Forest Park West Cemetery, Shreveport, LA. Interment will be in the Forest Park West Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 22, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Bailey Funeral Home

Mrs. Lopez, a resident of Springhill for over 70 years, died Friday, May 20, 2011 in Shreveport. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Lopez in 1988; grandson, Michael Lopez; and infant child, Dennie Lopez.

She is survived by her children, Lisa Roth and husband, Dewayne, of Benton, LA; Fred Lopez and wife, Ginger of San Antonia, TX; sisters, Ruby Green and Elizabeth Turner, both of Monroe, LA; and her special pet dog, Cookie. Also, special friends, Jeanette Beshea and Donna Williamson.

Serving as pallbearers will be LaVaine Williamson, Ryan OGlee, James Rawls, Jonathan Curlin, Dewayne Roth and Dr. Wayne McMahen.

The family expresses a special thank you to Dr. John Hardin, Dr. Stuart Blum, Dr. Alan Borne, Dr. John Davis, Sister Suni, nurses and staff at Christus Highland Hospital, and Louisiana Homecare for their wonderful care.

Visitation will begin Sunday at 2:30 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kelley was born November 10, 1946 to Charles Edward and Ella Jean Smith Clark and passed away Friday, February 26, 2010 in Springhill. She was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Thomas S. Kelley of Springhill; children, Theresa Williams of Minden, LA, Donald Dison of Springhill, LA, Stephanie Alvey and husband, Tony of Indiana, Lisa Lineberry and husband, James of Minden, LA; mother, Ella Jean Mills of Sarepta, LA; sisters, Margaret Coffman and husband, R.B. of Sarepta, LA, Mary Helen Giddings and husband James of DeRidder, LA; brother, James T. BoBo Mills, Jr. and wife Cynthia of Shongaloo, LA; step-daughters, Tracy Kelley of Springhill, LA, Dena Conterez and husband, David of Sarepta, LA and a host of grandchildren.
