Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m., today, Feb. 7, 2002, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Dr. Hudson died peacefully at home on Feb. 5, 2002. He beat the odds for three and a half years after being diagnosed with non-smokers Stage 3A adenocarcinoma of the lung in 1998. His life up until his death was active and full of the things he loved the most. He refused to be held hostage to his disease, and continued to live life to the fullest. He was a member of First Baptist Church Minden for many years, and looked to his good friend, Dr. Ronald Prince, for advice and spiritual guidance over this period of time.
Dr. Hudson, known as Jimmy by his friends, was born Oct. 11, 1941, in Shreveport. He was a direct descendent of the Noel brothers with his grandfather being W.E. Noel. The Noels were well known agricultural and oil exploration pioneers in North Caddo Parish in the early 1900s. He graduated from Byrd High School in 1959, and subsequently attained a B.S. in business administration from Louisiana Tech in 1964. He then attended L.S.U. Law School. He later was accepted into medical school at LSU-New Orleans, graduating in the top 15 percent of his class in 1970. He began his surgical internship and residency in 1971 at Confederate Memorial Medical Center and the VA Hospital in Shreveport.
Upon completion of his surgical residency in 1975, he entered private surgical practice with Dr. C.E. Boyd, his father-in-law at that time. In 1976, he moved to Minden and began the Surgical and Industrial Clinic and built a very successful surgical practice. He brought with him to Minden many modern and innovative procedures including aortic aneurysm surgery, carotid artery surgery, pacemaker implantation, and major lung surgery. His patients were almost like family to him, and his honest and caring bedside manner will long be remembered and appreciated by those whose lives he touched.
Dr. Hudson was certified by the American Board of Surgery and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He served as chief of surgery, president of the Medical Staff, and was a member of the board of governors of Minden Medical Center for a number of years and until the time of his death. He was a member of the Webster Parish Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.
After 20 years of general, thoracic, and vascular surgical practice, Dr. Hudson closed his office practice in 1995 but remained active in the medical community of Minden by serving as the medical director of the Minden Medical Center from 1995 until his death. He was devoted to Minden Medical Center as well as its medical and support staff, which became an extended family to him. He was an integral part of the hospitalís growth and transformation from the old Minden Sanitarium to the state-of-the-art medical facility that it is today. He will be long remembered by the administration and employees of the Minden Medical Center. Everyone has a favorite story about Dr. Hudson.
He was an avid outdoorsman and bird hunter. He loved to duck hunt on his lake in Gilliam, and enjoyed watching and identifying the ducks as much as shooting. He hunted birds all across the United States, in Africa, Argentina, Canada and Mexico. He was a true conservationist and supported organizations that preserve and protect the wetlands and habitat of ducks, including Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl. He was an excellent bird shot and also shot competitively for the last 25 years of his life. He competed all across the United States and in Mexico in shotgun sports. In 2001, he won the U.S. Helico Flyer Championship in Dallas, Texas .
Since a child, he had always thought he was supposed to be a farmer-rancher. His love of animals sparked his interest in alpacas, and in 1993 he began the Piney Hills Alpaca Ranch. Along with his wife, he raised a herd of more than 40 award-winning alpacas. The only alpaca ranch in Louisiana for a number of years, Piney Hills is still recognized nationwide within the alpaca industry as a producer of outstanding alpaca breeding stock.
Dr. Hudson was a man with many friends from all walks of life. He was the beneficiary of many prayers for his health and recovery during the time since his diagnosis. The many special cards, letters, and calls always seemed to arrive just when he needed them the most. These prayers did not go unanswered, for in many ways Dr. Hudson was healed. He loved his life on earth, but came to accept that life in Heaven would be wonderful as well. He lived his life with few regrets, one of which was what he termed his "misspent youth" as a teen-ager. But even that, he overcame through his hard work and undying devotion to medicine and his patients. He strived to instill these values for a superior education and work ethic in his daughters and step-daughter.
Dr. Hudson was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Noel Hudson; his father, James Benjamin Hudson; and his special, devoted grandmother, Lyda Akin Noel.
He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of nine years, Laura B. Hudson of Minden; loving daughters Emily Hudson and Jennifer Asel and husband, Richard; and grandson August Asel, all of Dallas; step-daughter, Ashley A. Pugh of Natchitoches; sister, Noel H. Santiago and niece Becky Barros of Houston, Texas ; mother-in-law, Bettye Barnette; an extended family-in-law in Homer and Bossier City, and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
He leaves behind many special friends ñ shooting friends, hunting buddies, patients, neighbors, nurses, colleagues, local businessmen ñ who will all remember him for different reasons, but nonetheless will remember him with a smile and fond memory. A very special friend to Dr. Hudson was George E. French III, CEO of Minden Medical Center, who in many ways was his partner for the past 20 years. Another special person he leaves behind is Mrs. C.E. (Emma) Boyd, his ex-mother-in-law, who for many years was a cherished, trusted, and loved adviser and friend. Jimmy wanted it known that his wife, Laura, was not only his beloved and devoted wife, but also his business partner, office manager, surgical assistant, masters-prepared private-duty nurse, and co-medical adviser and researcher with him throughout his ill-fated disease.
Pallbearers will be his close friends Roger Wilbanks, Dick Wilcox, Tuck Ingersoll, Sutton Orenbaun, J.W. Digilia and Bob Curnette. Honorary pallbearers will be his medical colleagues from Minden Medical Center, and special friends Mike Woodard, Joe Boddie, Eddie Jenkins, D.R. Smith, Buzzy McClellan, Collin Hortman, Dr. Cliff Coffman, Dr. Andy Marsala, Dennis Murray, and his flyer shooting friends throughout the United States.
